Our Town Many years ago it was said, ''Delmar is an easy place to come to and a hard place to leave.'' This is true because Our Town is a friendly town, reflecting a spirit of co-operation. Our school system is strengthened by the support it receives from the com- munity. Our Town in turn uses the school facilities. Thus to re- late the school with the community, we have chosen Our Town — The Town of Bethlehem — as the 1958 ORIOLE theme. We have pride in Our Town as does the Chamber of Com- merce. It is an enterprising organization which encourages the planting of dogwood trees to beautify Our Town, and the print- ing of the brochure Our Town of Bethlehem to publicize Our Town. We would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for letting us reprint some of the pictures used in that booklet. Each of the section pages retlects some aspect of Our Town. The Town Hall pictures the administrative phase, corresponding to the faculty and school administration. The Seniors are the only ones privileged to use the Main Entrance, which has become a symbol of their leadership. The Library aptly represents the Underclassmen, as they are still preparing to assume the responsi- bility of leaders. The Tollgate — center of student social life — symbolizes the numerous activities of school. Sports are repre- sented by the Swimming Pool. The Four Corners typifies the Ad- vertisements, since it is the center of community shopping. Here is our book, presenting our administrators, our students, and our activities; yes, presenting Our Town! As boys’ physical education instructor and coach of foot- ball, basketball, and baseball, you have helped us to grow and taught us the way to win. You have built not only strong teams, but also character and ideals. It is for these reasons that we of the 1958 ORIOLE staff dedicate our yearbook to you. © administra Mr. Bookhout, Supervising Principal, a nd Mr. Hoag, Administrative Assistant BOARD OF EDUCATION Mrs. Van Volkenburgh, Mr. Zimmerman, Mr. Holm- gren, Mr. Dryden. VARSITY FOOTBALL Although the 1957 Eagles suffered two humiliating defeats in the opening of the season, they earned the respect of everyone in our Town by regaining real foot- ball spirit and going undefeated for the rest of the season. This year the team shared the co-championship of the Western Division of the Eastern Scholastic Con- ference with Saratoga. Much of the credit for the ‘Cinderella story goes to the Savage, ' known to all as Coach Guerrera; and to his assistants, Donald Farrell, Clarence Lephart, and Norbert Smalling. Defeating Hudson, Columbia, Academy, Colonie, Albany High and Draper, the team showed the football spirit and know-how that promises to make next year's ball club another contender for the Championship. 29. They won eleven meets, lost only one, tied two, and scored first place out of fourteen schools in the Colgate Invitational Relay Championships. While piling up these impressive statistics, the team broke a total of fifty-seven pool and school records. This impressive number of records was made by free- style whiz Spencer Ryan; breaststroker Dick Llope; butter- fly breaststroker and captain, George Chesbro; diver, Dean Allen; backstroker, Sam Hazleton; freestyler, Art Taber; freestyler, Ben Berry; and backstroker, Karl Sutter. The team earned the season's record through strength and depth in every event. Through hard work on the part of every swimmer, each one has improved through- out the year. After winning three consecutive ball games, the squad lost three heartbreakers in a row, then completed the regular season with fanfare by defeating Colonie, Columbia, Guilderland, and Aca- demy. By virtue of this 14-3 season, the team shared the co- championship of the Capital District League with Van Rensselaer. The team had exceptionally fine balance and reserve strength both on defense and offsense. Every one of the starting five was high scorer for at least one game, and their fine defense de- moralized the opposing teams, who could neither make their own shots count, nor prevent one of our players from scoring. The outside positions were filled by Captain Roger Clough, Dave Powers, and Jim Montrose. Rog Casey and Tom Willard worked under the bucket. When the need arose, the outside positions were taken over by Phil O'Hara, Don Crysler, Stu Sharpe, Ken Lake, and Larry Shultes. Reinforcement under the bucket came from George Murphy, Almer George, and Bob Lun- den. This year's team was the sixth consecutive championship team coached by Mr. Farrell. 102 J. V. Basketball The junior varsity basketball team hada very successful season. A record of thirteen wins and only three losses showed that in future years they will be good material from which to build championship teams. The team was coached by. Mr. Norbert Smalling.
