Standing-SHAY, WHITING, CHRISTENSPIN, HowE, DAY, GREEK, BusnNELL. CLASS OF 1949 The Class of 1949 pauses a moment before it makes its final exit from the halls of B.C.H.S. All right. have it your way! It's been a long, hard grind with source themes. and homework. und. frankly. we often wondered if we'd ever really see Graduation Day. But now that we are reasonably assured of graduating, it is fun to recall what has happened during this hectic year. The first class activity of the year was the presentation of Kaufman and Fer- ber's famous play. Minick.l' which was unusual in that it wasn't just another comedy. While it was hilariously funny in parts. there was a constant undercurrent of seriousness. It will be hard to forget Dick Hayes, portrayal of K'Old Man Minickf' Brrr-the wind was certainly cold this winter. especially when Christmas card sales were on. The door-to-door method may be chilly, but it paid off in the end with a goodly sum in the treasury. The Senior girls have put on an energetic campaign to lose weight. You may laugh, but it was embarrassing at the Woodchoppefs Ball with admission a one-half cent per pound proposition. Along the dance line the Senior Ball should be men- tioned. It should be a night, or should we say morning, to remember. It has been the policy of the executive committee of the Class to see that every single member of the Class of '49 serve on at least one committee sometime during the current year. The Class of 1949 owes a vote of thanks to Miss Knowles, the Senior Adviser, and the Class President. Carl Christenseng Vice-President, Alan Whitingg Secretary, Anneke Sherrillg Treasuier. John Day. Mort Howe. Carole Shay. Barbara Bushnell and William Greer were the representatives to the Student Council. l50l ..,. , Q! . I 5.1: s . T Ji O HEI Xl! 7 2' '-U '17 a W W fi Ill ' ' QHLEJAXZ L- 5 95. Claire Youngman and Buster Harrington were Daisy Mae and L'il Abner respectively. The dance was a success with the girls footing the bill. The Juniors struggled through their mid-years. The following week, possibly 'med as a reward for over-worked grey-matter, they received their class rings. One of the high spots of their year was the outstanding job they did on their stellar talent show. The bar room scene, introduced by the typical M. C.,,' Dan Niooney, was perfectly portrayed by Heard-shark .lim Clyne and pistol-packin' ii Tom Lewis. Eager to make enough money for the junior Prom, the Class held another dance in March. With the dance music furnished by their home made juke box, the juniors ehalked up another financial success for their class. XN'inding up the year with the Prom on April 29th, every available Junior with a white coat or evening gown turned out in the family car to have a wonderful evening. The Class of 50, of course, has been active athletically as well as socially. The two spectacular basketball stars of last year, jim Clyne and Ronnie Oates, have risen to even greater heights ffiguratively speaking. that isj. The Class was well replesented on the football. track. and baseball teams. The Class of i950 have proven themselves a worthy candidate for the position of Seniors next year. Good luck! Desperately combing their unruly locks and snatching hasty bites from wormy but delicious apples, the cheerleaders thor- oughly enjoyed every game of the football season. Co-operating with Helen Crocker, Captain during these games, every girl helped originate new cheers. As the winter months sped by, the basketball fand the boysj pounded down the court, followed by the pufling referees. At every time out. the girls, clad in orange and black, quickly boosted the team's spirit by energetically leading the enthu- siastic crowd. Skitch Rector and Annie Mac shared the captaincy for the basketball season. 'iHmmmm, Got the pitch?', Thus prepared . X Slnnding Coma Varsity Songleadersz BUCHANAN. to start. the songleaders began, each on her own note. In spite of this slight handicap, everyone sang at the top of his lungs and was soon scream- ing as the team raced for a point. Sue Amos added more than her share by composing a new song, Stand Up and Cheern for is it S'Stand Up, You Queeru? XVC never did get that straightlj. The .lay Vees were famous this year for the many original cheers they introduced. Captain Nlary Lou Buchanan spurred the cheerleaders on, lu spur the spectators on, who, in turn. spurred the team on. fflomplicated to be sure, but neces- sary for spirit.j The very words of one of the cheers may be applied to this year's reeord ol' the clieerleaclers, Yea, team. nice work! kI.V. No Spectators ? CJRLS' SPORTS Basketball. hoekey, softball. soccer. volleyball. archery. tennis. and tumbling . . . Year 'round the girls' intramural teams can be seen flitting around the campus and gym in their colored pin- neys. Such spirit you've probably never seen. and the playing is almost as commendable as the pep. During the soccer season. when the sun is hot. the masses flocked to the field to participate. At Illls time. many black and blue skins were seen. as any girl who played will tell. The team with the most endurance must have been the Green team. for it was victorious. As soon as it's time for hockey. the weather inevitably becomes bitter cold. and the girls have even been known to play in a driving blizzard. This sport Csometimes confused with golf?j really requires a great deal of skill. for by one slip of the stick. one of your classmates may be laid up for weeks. Again the Green team won. which proved. without a doubt, that they must have been the hardiest. Driven indoors at last. the teams turned to vol- leyball. a sport less strenuous than the others, but a great deal of fun. The cheers were many, but the points were few. However. Rose must have cheered the loudest, as they earned top honors. Basketball was divided into two periods, for it is probably the most popular and most important girls' sport in the school. The first period was won by Rose. a team which has experienced players. such as Doreen Scoons. Sally Hartzell. and Nlary Yan Yolkenburgh. We won't try to prophesy the winners of the second period. ln order to be able to participate in playdays with other schools. Klrs. Coon chose two basket- ball teams. So lar. they have made an excellent showing for B.C.H.S.. by winning several meets. -lust before the snow melted. the mats and apparatus were dragged into the gym. and the girls tumbled. fThat may be taken literallyxl The cries of people with stiff muscles and achy joints. resulting from tumbling. could be heard in every corridor. The girls also participated in tennis. archery. and softball in the spring. Although these sports were not as popular. as there was not mueh com- petition between teams involved. they provided an excellent chance to learn the games. Malcolm Fuller, as it stands now, is the only veteran contender for the position. Big Buster Harrington and Bill Green are the candidates for first base. Probably Coach Durand will have Porky , Hodgkins, a stronghold in the pitching staff, working out on first along with the field position. There is going to be decided competition for the shortstop slot. Bob Green will be in there fight- ing for his old stronghold with Ronny Oates and Pj' GREER AND JOHN DAY, Captains BASEBALL that new blonde sensation, jack Wiggins, battling to gain recognition. Hard fighting Sun Shinei' Bill Greer. along with Bob Kunz, will be boxing up the catcheris position. These boys are both Seniors who do not seem to have any great competition at the present moment. There will bc, undoubtedly, some new- comers trying out to gain honors. The important pitching staff will unquestion- ably be seeing Norman Hodgkins in action with the top-notch Sophomore, Bill Green. right up there with him. Tom Lewis is another pitcher and a centcrfield man. It is questionable whether or not he will see pitching action. These are the boys who are expected to be battling for honors in the I9-18-1949 baseball squad. Coach Durand has a great group of fellows to work with this year. For this reason. we are ex- pecting and hoping for a successful year. As always. the fellows will be out there putting every- thing into it and doing their best. The erisp, bright fall day attraeted a large erow cl from all the capital distriet. to say nothing of the bus loads of Saratoga fans. Two of Albany's leading radio stations. YYPTR and WOKO, were on hand to broadeast the game. Yes, it was a big day for the Eagles. Saratoga High Sehool brought along its band with their blue and white uniforms. Every note they played was Calling vietory. Every foot was beating out the rhythm, YYin, Saratoga! Bethlehem Central had that feeling of vietory. too. The -Iunior and Senior Varsity eheerleaders were on hand with their eolorful uniforms to eheer Bethlehem on. Yes, it was a heart-warming sight to see such enthusiasm, vigor, and team support as those two high sehools showed. The hrst two quarters made the Bethlehem baekers grit their teeth while Saratoga fought and gained. XYith a O-0 seore the ebeerleaders kept the spirits high with songs and eheers during the half time. With team play raeing time, the second half of the game was drawn to a elose. FOOTBALL There was something new added to the old at Bethlehem this year, as the boys started the ,48-'49 football season. The fellows were challenged not only to win all of their games, but to become vic- torious in the Northeastern Football League that was established this year. This gave the boys some- thing to Hght for, and they did. The Eagles came through again for their school by battling odds to win a co-championship. How easy it is to say, We won a eo-ehampion- shipf' We ought to stop and look over the boys who won that honor for us and learn just how hard they had to work to do it. It takes a strong, willing, and determined team to win a co-championship, and that is what we had. Furthermore, Captain Carl Christensen held up his end of the bargain by blocking the right end of thc line. First of all, the '48 club had teamplay, each fellow on the team being always ready to back and push on his buddies. They had that fight hard, 26 never die spirit which added up to Five wins, a tie, and two losses. That was good ball playing in any man's language and it pleased the fans. The players, however, have reason to remem- ber the practicing and studying throughout each school week. Each day under the hot sweltering sun, the Orange and Black team was with Mother Nature to build football bodies and football minds. In full dress, our boys had to sweat out the calis- thenics and scrimmages which looked like work but was fun to the fellows. Coach Durand divided up the linesmen and backs for special help during the practice session. Another important matter that the boys had to contend with was their school work. They deserve credit for running their hearts out all afternoon and then driving their brains to keep eligible. Some fellows actually stayed on the honor roll while winning their letters. The managers for the football team were jack Frederick and Bob Greenman. KRAFT HI-Y The David Knapp Chapter of the Bethlehem Central Boys, Hi-Y, an organization looked upon as merely a boys, service club. has placed its ideal squarely before it this year. The Christian way of life. as in the past, is now being sought by every member. Thinking. perhaps. that the organization was becoming too exclusive and fraternal, the boys have devised a plan to admit to membership all willing Sophomores and juniors who seek after the Christian spirit. Membership now being open. the ideals of the Hi-Y are being spread through- out the school and community by a group in a democratic society-boys who have a purpose in their organization. To be sure, Hi-Y has also pitched in and aided the school by wood collecting for pep rallies. by the greeting of incoming representatives in our Educational Confer- ence, and by earning dollar on top of dollar for the World Youth Fund. In a sincere manner, the Hi-Y has put its ideals to an appointed task. TRI HI-Y This year the Tri Hi-Y has held its meetings under the capable direction of its officers: President, Barbara Holmeg Vice-President. Kitty Brumheldg Secretary, Doreen Scoonsg and Treasurer, Pat Van Wormer. Their Supervisor was Mrs. Kraft. The Tri Hi-Y has been trying to uphold and spread Christian standards throughout the school. It began in its own meetings by choosing a Chaplain. Betty Wallace, whose job it was to see that at the beginning of each meeting someone offered a prayer and conducted a short discussion on a subject pertaining to Christianity. Also, in upholding Christian standards the Tri Hi-Y has helped other people. During Christmas vacation a party was given for an Old Ladies' Home. The girls sang Christmas carols. for which the ladies were very grateful. The girls spent several meetings making mittens that were given to the Childrenis Home for Christmas. Soon the Tri Hi-Y will put into practice a plan whereby all girls. who are interested. may join the Club. This will give more girls a chalice to become members. To raise money for their Club and for the Polio Fund. the Tri Hi-Y joined with the Hi-Y in successfully putting on two student-faculty volleyball games. The winners? The faculty! HONOR SOCIETY lfnspectacular. to be sure. but an important cog in both the life of our students and the administration of the school is the Honor Society. To say that this group of students is very dignified and all-important is quite falseg to say that the Honor Society has its special niche in school life is the absolute truth. Along with a more general program of furthering its standards. this group has aided the guidance department of our school in many ways. A great deal of behind-the-scenes clerical work for both the Career Conference at Columbia High School and the Educational Conference here was carried out by the Honor Society members. The permanent oflice-file pictures for every 7th Grader have been taken. as in the past. under the specific handling of the Honor Society. And too. the members. who have been chosen because of their own individual qualities of high scholarship. able leadership. good moral character. and down-to-earth service. have attempted to uphold. as a necessary part of their school life. the standards for which they exist as an organization. For it benefits the society little if its members are merely pin and card bearers. with much self-importance and little effort. A hearty handshake should he offered by the school to those in this society who have rendered many small but important services to its school.
