However, the hgures could easily have been reversed with a few breaks. ln at least two of the games which the Eagles lost they clearly outplayed'the opposition. Be that as it may, our won-and-lost record for this season outshines that of last year,s eleven, even though we lost such stellar performers as Ogden and Ewing. Captain Charley Taylor had a fine year, leading the team in scoring and playing savagely on defense. George Kirk, who switched from tailback to the wingback slot, used his dazzling speed to good advantage on sweeping reverses, which brought Central plenty of yardage. Two Sophs, Tom lVlurphy and Dave Plummer, both proved worthy additions to our backfield picture during the year. Fred Gillespie, playing quarterback in the last two contests of the season, was found hard to stop by opposing linemen, and Ed Walsh gave the foe a real taste of ball-carrying speed. Our forward wall grew stronger as the season progressed, as we had a bunch of fellows there with plenty of fight, though they were outweighed much of the time. Ed Ross and Dune Martin at the ends both played in every quarter save the last two at Highland, when injuries forced Marty out of the lineup. Ott-Hansen and Nlocskinski did well at the tackles, with Young also playing there before switching to center. At the guards, MacMillan, Adams. Foster, Benedetto, Bump and Myers all gave the enemy backs a tough time. Bob Woods, Doug Miller and Dick MacDonald all showed themselves capable of fine line play. Wfith most of these boys returning next year our line should be one of the best in the district. In the at-si game of the season on September 22. Arlington High came to Delmar and went back to Poughkeepsie with a 12-0 victory. Lack of experience showed up against Central in this game, though Eddie Hoss was outstanding, plunging for a good deal of yardage. A week later, a powerful YI. eleven pounded out at 20 to 6 victory over BCHS. However, Dave Plummer broke into our lineup by scoring the first touchdown of the year for the Orange and Black. Playing a night game on October 5 against La Salle Institute at Troy, our gridders outplayed the opposition but lost 7 to 6. This was the most exciting game of the year and Central was really superior to La Salle offen- sively. We had 12 first downs as compared to 6 for the Troy team and we outgained them by 80 odd yards. However, Howie 6fScat Backn Calarneau got away for a score early in the second half and a placekick gave La Salle a 7-0 lead, whichithey held till the closing minutes of the game. Then Eddie Ross climaxed a downfield drive by smashing over for a touchdown. With seconds remaining, the kick by Plummer missed by inches and the game ended with the crowd going wild. On October 13, BCHS journeyed to Saratoga and won their first game 6-0. Charley Taylor bucked over to score after Plummer's pass to Martin had set the stage. Hudson High became Centra1,s second victim the following week when Taylor and Martin scored touchdowns and Plummer figured in the two extra points with a pass to Martin and a placekick. Continuing in high gear, Bethlehem Central bowled over Philip Schuyler 19-0 with Kirk, Martin and Taylor contributing touchdowns and 'Plummer adding the extra point. Scotia High beat our team 13.0 on November 3 on a soggy Union Col- lege field. Though our eleven gained 11 first downs to Scotia's 1, and our running attack showed a margin of 175 yards over the home team, a poor pass defense lost the game. Both touchdowns came on passes and the records show that the red-clad warriors gained 117 yards with their aerial attack. Highland Central handed the Orange and Black machine its worst QW-Lwfi sethaek of the season when our team played its last game on the Highland field. The score was 27-6. and though BCHS fought hard, a weak pass defense again led to defeat. In the hnal period Charley Taylor came through with a touvhdown after a long march hy Bethlehem Central. Those receiving letters were: Captain Charles Taylor, Wilson Young, Ed Boss, Dune Martin, George Kirk, Dave Plummer, Henry Ott-Hansen, Bob Bump, Joe Mocskinski, Fred Gillespie, John lVlaclVlillan, Tom Murphy, Vic Benedetto and Russ Adams. Nine games in all were played, some of them away, and we can proudly say good sportsmanship and a friendly spirit were constantly in use. Con- sidering the small amount of practice the girls were allowed, the results were excellent. HOCKEY HOCKEY is considered to he the most danger- ous girls' sport. For several weeks the famous halls of Bethlehem were cluttered with wounded veterans from one of those Intra- mural Hockey games. The Green Team, being fortunate enough to dodge the sticks, balls and intercepting bodies, conquered. SOCCER SOCCER got off to a good start this fall. We practiced during gym periods and the sports- minded girls put their knowledge to work during eighth period Intramural games. The Wlhite Team won the tournament with the Green Team a close second. BASKETBALL SINCE basketball is the favorite sport of the BCHS girls, there was a great deal of keen competition and hard playing. After playing several games, it was a toss-up between White and Blue for the championship. The final game was played, and Blue won by one point. The feature writers, Eleanor Littlefield and Phyllis Haswell, have done outstanding writing, presenting something of unusual interest in every issue of the paper. Credit for the neat appearance of the Star goes to the production men, Bob Burns and Dick Haverly, and to the poor, harried typists who are the key people in getting the Star out on time. The present staff turns the paper over to the new editor, Peg Street, and her staff with hope for a very successful future and the promise that they will find the work interesting.
