His broad, pleasant smile and his liking for people soon made him many friends among the students and teachers. Richard lived on a farm, and his conversation usually concerned his farm work and his hobby, raising rabbits. For a while he was a Boy Scout, he participated in the Youth Fellowship and other church activities. He was a trombonist in the school band. Whatever Richard did, he did with enthusiasm, Near the end of his junior year, when illness caused him to be out of school, he was never known to complain. When he returned at the beginning of his senior year, Richard was still enthusiastic, cheerful, smiling, and hard-working. After several months as a member of the Class of l959, illness again required Richard to withdraw from school. Then, on November l2, l958, Richard passed away. By such a memorial page as this, we hope to be continually reminded of so well-loved a classmate. We know that having had Richard as a friend has made us better persons and our school a happier place. We shall always value our association with him. Gordon Lee Prentice, son of Reverend and Mrs. Gordon Prentice, came from Butler, Pennsylvania, with his parents and his brother Robert at the age of l5. While living in Butler, he attended Butler Junior High School, participating in such school activities as the band, the chorus, the male quartet, and football, his favorite sport. ln September, l958, he entered Bethlehem- Center Senior High School and soon made many new friends. He pursued the academic course, and, in addition to his studies, he was extremely active in his church work. Then, as a result of a sudden illness, Gordon was taken to the Presbyterian Hospital in Pitts- burgh. A few weeks later, on October l9, l958, he passed away. Gordon is now studying in the greatest school under the greatest Teacher of all. GORDON L. Finally graduation season came and with it came the Prom, Baccalaureate services, the Senior Ban- quet, and finally commencement exercises. And now we leave this yearbook as o lasting reminder of our class, the first class to graduate from Bethlehem-Center Sen- ior High School, the class of l959. SENIOR CLASS SPONSORS Miss Channing Mrs. Roseberry Mr. Tselepis SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President ,N .. , , cc E cc... c Toby Simon Vice-President Erma Raitano Secretary , .cc . .. . Louise Westich Treasurer c.. cc ,,, John Muchoney We who are graduating did not begin our high school years together as one class but rather as three separate classes. Our schools then were Bethlehem Joint, Centerville and West Bethlehem. Each one of us was a little frightened by the idea of beginning high school, because we believed that it would be very different from our other years in school. We were right, for we had to meet many new people, choose our own courses, compete in athletics, organize as- semblies, and promote school spirit. By the time we reached our junior year, we were well established and were represented by fellow class- mates in the band, as cheerleaders, as majorettes, and on the various athletic teams. Our main interests that year centered around financing the Junior-Senior Prom Centerville and West Bethlehem held theirs at the Nemacolin Country Club, Bethlehem Joint held theirs in the high school auditorium, and all three were successful. Then in our senior year, our schools merged. Once again we were faced with securing a place in new surroundings. We did succeed in re-establishing our- selves as has been proved by our activities. We began by electing our class officers. We chose Toby Simon, President, Erma Raitano, Vice-President, Louise Wes- tich, Secretary, and John Muchoney, Treasurer. Prior to the school year of l958-l959, two of the finest bands in this area met to make our first public appearance in the Kennywood parade. Here we once again led the parade, the new Bethlehem-Center Senior High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Battaglini and as- sisted by Mr. Behr, was a huge success. The big day came. While other students were getting acquainted, the band, already familiar with one another, began preparation for the football season. A few of the half-time highlights were: He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, Patricia, and l2th Street Rag. Our band and our maiorettes, having performed with such proficiency during the fall, immediately began practicing for our first annual spring concert. Even while all this was happening, some of our band members were giving performances with other groups such as the All-County Band. Mr. Battaglini and three members, Annette Gaste, Lorraine Solak, and Charles Battaglini, journeyed to Baldwin High School to participate in the Western District Band Festival held at Blairsville. Later Charles Battaglini advanced to perform in the State Band Festival held at Blairs- ville. The most exciting part of our successful year was our concert, which was one of the finest ever given in this area. The concert, per- formed with expert skill, contained a variety of music to please every- one's taste. The presentation of the Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna Overture, The Lord's Prayer, Venus, and the stirring marches did much to prove this statement. To show our appreciation for the superior job Mr. Battaglini has been doing, we presented him with a pocket transistor radio. Mr. Behr, not being able to be with us due to an accident, received his gift by proxy. The band performed for baccalaureate, and the graduating seniors played two selections for commencement exercises. The band, having marched and played in numerous parades around here will continue to practice during the summer months to insure that its future performances will be as excellent as its past. This DISTRICT BAND Three students, Annette Gaste, Lorraine Solak, and Charles Battaglini were chosen to participate in the Western District Band Festival at Baldwin High School. The band numbered approximately 200 in- strumentalists. The festival is sponsored by the Music Educators of Pennsylvania to further music in- struction in the public schools, The festival lasted over a three day period from January 8-lO. Mr. Battaglini accompanied the students to Baldwin. was the first year for the All-County Band to perform for the public, the performance was highly successful. The concert was held on October 28. Mr. Battaglini directed On The Esplanade from Bostonia Suite, one of the more difficult numbers of the concert. STATE BAND Charles Battaglini was chosen to participate in the All-State Band Western Division at Blairsville. Charles was selected for this honor because of ex- cellent performance at the Western District Band Festival held at Baldwin. Patty Bush Charles Battaglini Mariaelena Radachy The first exhibit in which Bethle- hem-Center was entered this year was at the Washington High School during the annual Institute week. One can be sure that our art teacher, Miss Hughes, was very proud when we took eight of the eighteen prizes awarded to high school students, four of which were First prizes, and rightly so should she be proud because she has been teaching us for only two years. But our biggest surprise came at the California High School exhibit, which was sponsored by the Washington County Federation of Women's Clubs. Once again Beth-Center emerged on top, tak- ing honors in all but one of the cate- gories. Capturing sixteen of the twenty- seven prizes offered, our students once more brought honor to the school. For his outstanding work Charles Battaglini was chosen to display three of his paintings in an all-state exhibit at Pittsburgh. These paintings are pictured at the left. Our thanks to Miss Hughes and the students for their excellent work. We hope they will continue in their efforts with as much success, 5' MISS FRANCES MILLER QUEEN bd-' gf 'J ye h, ,..i3T.' E. ALPHA TRI-HI-Y This year the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y was made into an all senior group because of the increased number of students. Activi- ties were rather limited also because of this increase in the student body. Our first function was the initiation of new members at an evening service with a program of entertainment following. Other proiects included candv sales, preparation of baskets for needy families at Christmas time in conjunction with the Nurses' Club, and sending Valentines to children in the Washington Hospital, We assisted the Fredericktown Business and Professional Women's Club in their annual Heart Fund Drive. Our closing activity of the year was a mother- daughter social. SENIOR HI-Y The purpose of the Bethlehem-Center Senior High School Senior Hi-Y is to Create, maintain, and extend through- out the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character We strive for clean speech, clean sports- manship, clean scholarship, and clean living. The Beta Tri-Hi-Y is an organization established to create, maintain, and ex- tend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian living, lt was organized in i937 so that a Tri-Hi-Y club for the freshmen and sophomores might be available. This year, however, the membership was limited to only sophomores because of the new junior-senior high set-up. We wish to thank our sponsor, Miss Ciccani, for her help and guidance, even though our activities were curtailed, we greatly appreciated her assistance, 425' Medicine Men The Future Nurses Club was organized by our school nurse, Mrs. Largent, to acquaint the girls with the nursing profession. With this object in mind, the club spent a day visiting the Somerset State Hospital, Somer- set, Pennsylvania. Our welfare project, giv- ing Christmas baskets to the needy in the community, gave us much satisfaction. Money was earned by our having a candy sale and sponsoring other various projects to purchase Future Nurses pins for the senior girls.. H- Don't cut yourself OFFICERS President .. . . The specific purpose of the Science Club is to supplement actual classroom learning in the physical sciences by the use of direct ex- perience. This purpose was accomplished by project work inside the classroom and by ex- perimentation or research outside the class- room. The members made excursions to places related to the field of science and at- tended lectures given by professional men trained in the various scientific fields. No officers of the Science Club were elected this year because of the late organiza- tion date. sronfs :Viv 2,1 If 2 if Ak I ' QX5-3399 ff , : 4 ', ' 'A 5 ? SECTION 5 CHAMPS Golf is a test of temper, o trial of honor, a revealer of chor- acter, a chance to play the man and act the gentleman, and is the study of a lifetime in which one may exhaust himself but never his subject. The Beth-Center golf team, under the direction of Mr. Tworzydlo, play their home matches at the Nemacolin Country Club located on Route 40 near Beallsville. Since taking over the coaching of the golf team three years ago, Mr. Tworzydlo has produced section champs all three years. As a resulf of their skillful playing, this year the team captured the Section 5 crown by winning eight straight games. Continuing on undefeated, B. C. beat Greensburg in the quarter finals, lOM -516. Entering into the semi-finals against Penn Hills, the only other undefeated team in WP.l.A.L., B. C. lost, 13M - ZW. Charles Greskovich and Ronald Durdines paved the way for BethJCenter throughout the year by achieving the lowest scores in our section. We congratulate the golf team for their outstanding record and would like to wish Mr. Tworzydlo and his future teams continued success. TEE OFF! no 7 BASEBALL TEAM X .
