Oh loy We Learn to Drzve We were all exclted to say the least when drtvmg was mtroduced to our currlcu lum thls year Mr Gxffm was to be our long suffermg lnstructor We looked forward ln eager antlcxpatxon to the fxrst class Our lmpatlence was mcreased each day as we spent endless hours ln the classroom learmng from the textbooks about the mental and physlcal make up of a drxver the constructxon of roads the parts of a car the stat1st1cs on accldents and countless other thmgs we d1dn't know exxsted From tlme to tlme there were movles whxch scared us half to death wlth pxctures of acc1dents At last' We were behmd the wheel V e had studxed all the steps m startmg and shxftmg gears and we knew that we would soon be smoothly operatmg the vehxcle But what was th1s'? The engme seemed prone to Jump the gears wouldn't shlft and there were hand s1gnals to be remembered too When thxs was accomplxshed somewhat cor rectly there were new and more dlffxcult hurdles m the way of that premous drxver s llcense NX e had to learn to maneuver the car ln every 1mag1nable sltuatxon The poles we used for stanch1ons had a terrxble habxt of fallmg over when they seemed well out of the way of our car There were several near coll1s1ons when we got out on the road These problems had dlsheartemng effects and at f1rst fallure was the rule rather than the exceptxon Mr Glffm gave us pat1ent words of encouragement and once ln awh1le of dxsgust Everytxme we made a mxstake we thought Wxll I ever pass the crucxal tests w1ll I do th1s when the patrolman tests me when It really counts? But we kept pushmg onward ach1ev1ng correct hablts step by step Fxnally to the surprlse of skeptxcal spectators our two classes emerged the flrst thoroughly tralned competent sportsmanlxke group of drlvers ever wltnessed 1n our school We all enjoyed ourselves at the assembly on September Z9 and yet beneath all our laughter there was a note of sadness Mr Pxttman our faxthful custodlan for thlrty emght years was leavmg us H15 fammly was wxth us to help convmce h1m of our profound apprec1at1on of hrs long servtce The program consxsted of songs and musxc by several groups Freshmen gave a play show1ng P1tt reflectmg over h1s years of assoc1at1on wxth the school A background of the melody When I Grow Too Old To Dream was sung throughout the story wzth touchxng effects upon all of us n approprrate poem was read by Louella Stonebraker TO PITT Harry P1tt the janitor man Teases the glrls whenever he can Keeps the rooms lookmg spxc and span Puts the ashes 1n the old tm can But for pleasure ask that boy Huntmg IS h1s greatest Joy The sentzmental mood was xncreased by each part of the program It was then we began to reallze that Pxtt actually was leavmg No more would there be hxs famxlxar smxhng face hxs llttle Jokes about everyone h1s frxendllness and wxlllngness to clean up after our boxsterous football and basketball games When Pltt came forward at last to recewe our partmg glfts he had a bxg smzle hldmg the tears w1th1n whmch were attempt 'mg to flow at any moment. They have certainly had the training required. Their course has covered: The Well- Fed Family, Meal Plan- ning and Preparation, The Vfell-Planned and Furnished Home, The Well-Managed Home, The Well-Bred Girl and Her Social Relation:-hips. lt sounds as if they've been busy, doesn't it? But, it is no wonder that they have had such interest in learning these practical and worth-while subjects since they are taught by such a capable teacher as Miss Burns.
