BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME IX JL m To those who taught us honor, faith, courage, love; who sympathized with our struggles, encouraged our efforts, hailed our victories; whose kindness and generosity made possible these colorful school days— OUR PARENTS On these pages are recorded our last acts as the children of today, for with our graduation we become the men and women who are the world of tomorrow. We enter the future with an open mind, ready to receive the wisdom of our predecessors, fully realizing that we may learn through the mistakes they have made. The world is ours to be molded with our hands and the destiny of others will be our responsibility. Ours is a trust and a promise— We thank you, Parents, for lending us your growing child. All the years of love and care and training which you have given him have stood him in good stead in his work and in play. We send him home to you, we hope a little stronger, a little taller, a little freer, a little nearer his goal. Adopted from The Spirit of the Moster Teacher' LEONORA AIKEN. A.B.. A.M. He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be. since he lingers there. 69 FRESHMAN: C3 tA Twas in September thirty-six, As Freshmen, we were surely fixed Upon careers that would require Four years until we could retire To other worthwhile fields of knowledge. As business, or perhaps a college. At first we held campaigns full strong. With fights and posters six feet long. Out of this turbulent affray Rose Nancy Laws to hold us sway. With Henry, Ginsburg, Maphis too. Our freshmen functions to pursue. Of course we can't forget the tale About Ulysses' famous sail That Homer said took seven years: Although a puppet quenched his fears And took but seven months instead. With English class to guide his head. SOPHOMORES: That fall, as Sophomores, we came To B. C. C.—a noble name To fire our songs and set our pace And lead us through a winning race! As president. Johnny Shumate rose. With Kelly. Peyton. Ginsburg chose Committees. How we worked to raise Some cash for later happy days! A skating party we conceived. A plan which gladly was received. And soon became such a success That others followed by request. Then other dramas shook the stage As acting soon became the rage: Nor was a Latin play exempt From youthful thespian attempt: The Lost Elevator and The Clock Struck One A few more honors for us won. While others, in the field of sport. Reached glory of another sort. In basketball the girls became The county champs, with glowing fame. The boys just missed this honored berth. But in the field meet showed their worth. And piled up such a mighty score That Leland took the meet once more. Thus in the spring, with glowing heart, From Leland we did all depart And turned our footstep and our eye To gather fame in senior high. voy HI§ T O Rif The parties o'er we cleared our throats And warbled forth inspiring notes, At first, the Christmas Tree to light (At which, upon our songs, a blight Did fall—the tragic stage coach crash— But we recovered in a flash). Then, in the chorus ranks appeared When Pirates of Penzance'' was cheered. In sports, from seniors we did snip The Intramural Championship. And so, as summer heat descended Our sophomore play-days proudly ended. JUNIORS: Then came our shining Junior year— How memory holds her frolics dear! Can we forget the times we had. Or all our grades, both good and bad? But first—to officers a toast! To Johnny, who has made the most Of every single hope and chance Our class has had for its advance! To Peyton, Stoever, Gins burg, too. Who, with so very much to do. Brought all our functions into gear And piled successes on the year! Then, hear our memories loudly tell The work of Embrey. Springer. Bell And Jackson, Gish in bright array On lolanthe's gala day. And of Our Nothing But The Truth The critics said. Why sirs, forsooth! Your Frances and your Bevy Knapp Are feathers in the Junior cap, While Mary Ellen, as you know Is cute enough to steal the show. Recall that Junior-Senior dance To which we did so gaily prance? The S. I. A. we started too. To prove Bethesda-ites are true. Its founders. Green and Fowler, made A banner that can never fade. And then we chose the blue and white Class colors that have been our light Of unity. So. swiftly pass The echoes of our Junior Class. SENIOR: The summer died, and with the fall Back through this old Bethesda hall We trod with toes and spirits light, For we had reached the promised height. John Shumate, once more president. With Peyton, Stoever, Mankin, lent Yet higher dignity and fame To a Bethesda Senior’s name. (Though dignity and social pride Were quickly packed and laid aside So all could be such hale and hearty Infants at the Baby Party.) The year rolled on. Now take a glance At the Alumni Game and Dance— Our tossers won the first event, The second found us shuffle-bent. We sought advice on later nights, As speakers stood beneath our lights And helped us find the right careers To follow in the future years: Yet sandwiched 'twixt these solemn aims Our basketball team's mighty games. Our boys were something to beware. 'Member the trimming they gave Blair? And oh, what fun they had at Durham Though home at last we did allure them! About that faculty quintet In costume, we can ne'er forget! When Rockville High burned to the ground Bethesda spread its arms, and found A place, so that our friends could be Each one a welcome refugee. The College Night and Footlight play Were given on a later day. The Prom and Senior Fashion Show Made gentlemen of every bo; Then Class Day, Banquet, Picnic, all Sped in relentless waterfall. Baccalaureate and Commencement time Sang us a sudden sobering rhyme— That we must take this memory Must bear this spirit worthily Must softly, yet with steadfast face Leave our Bethesda—Chevy Chase. 72 } ELIZABETH WATKINS GEORGE SORRELL CARRNDAR September 26 Election of Senior Officers November 15 After High School Night November 18 Senior Barn Dance December 1 Christmas Parade December 8 Basketball Season Started December 20 Christmas Tree Lighting December 21 Alumni Basketball and Dance December 22 Christmas Play January 26 First Blair Game February 3 Baby Party February 27 Second Blair Game March 7-9 Star Tournament April 9 Baseball Season Started April 18 Survey Inaugurated April 20 Junior-Senior Prom May 3 Spring Play— The Red Lamp May 16 Fashion Show May 20-24 Final Exams June 2 Faculty Tea June 7 Class Day June 12 Senior Banquet and Dance June 18 Graduation, gifs These are our slurdy younq bulwarlcs These lhe blllhe youlhs who annonq us Worlhuly wore our brnghl colors Valnanl our lads and our lasses Gay as lheur lauqhler lhal cheers us Gay as The aura aboul Them Clever and useful These sluclenls Wnse ID lhe lore ol our carnphres Cheeruly worlong lo serve us Doing lhe besl for Belhesda Proudly we honor our classes Proud lo ha X6 called Them our Classes JUNIOR ROBERT LEBLING.
