Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1939 volume:

t fi i i HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME EIGHT BECAUSE during the past twelve years we have seen Life unfold before our eyes, BECAUSE it has created within us a desire to attain greater heights, BECAUSE we are ambitious for ourselves and our school, We dedicate this volume of the Pine Tree to ms furuiisj fMiumjfl We gaze with dreamy eyes out of a win- dow that is both a mirror and a telescope. The mirror tilts—and reflects many scenes all too familiar: the growth of our school, the success of our classmates, the many things that we, the class of '39, have con- tributed to our school. Then it shatters. Now, the pieces merge once more and we look thru the telescope. No matter how far-reaching is the instrument, there is noth- ing to see. Nothing but castles in the air— indefinable, translucent. To you, the com- ing class of '40, and to all those that follow— What will you see when it comes your turn to look into the mirror? THE FUTURE Gracious gift—fraught with every aspiration— meted to us in fleeting moments—tempered to our vision—keeper of our better selves—repository of all we have built—despair of them who fear its coming—hope of all who, with courage, advance to meet it. [69] bebjub olboo mmi June 20, 1936 Dear Diary: Please forgive me for not keeping you informed on my ninth grade activities, but I thought I would wait until the end of school and then tell you all. September saw one hundred of us enrolling as seniors in Leland Junior High. Zip Lehr soon organized a dancing club which proved to be a huge success. I'll never forget The Music Goes Round and Round. It will always be associated in my mind with ninth grade fun. The Pine Cone. our school paper, was a source of great interest for us aspiring journalists. By May. however, time would have dragged had it not been for the annual field meet at Rockville at which Leland took many honors. At last Junior High School days are ended and we are facing the prospect of a new experience in Senior High School next fall. June 20. 1937 Dear Diary: Well, our first year in Senior High School has just ended, and it was certainly a full one. After becoming accustomed to being mere Sophs. we elected our class officers: Harry Gordon, Blake Lancaster, Sue Morsell. and James Cremins. Mr. Frisbie. the music teacher, organized for the first time an opera club, which produced Patience. It was a great success and starred one of our own classmates. Eleanor Reid. Soon after the opera Footliqht produced its annual spring play. The Whole Town's Talking. The cast was made up mostly of seniors, but just wait until we Sophs get there! Basketball, the major sport at Bethesda. furnished plenty of excitement for us. Our team whirled through an undefeated season, taking the Southern Maryland title from Mount Rainier and entering the finals of the Star Tournament, losing eventually to St. John's. What a record in spite of this single defeat. The year came to a close rather sadly for us who hated to see the seniors graduate, for we had looked up to them and profited by their achievements. June 20. 1938 Dear Diary: This past fall was indeed a happy one for the class of '39, for we were full-fledged Juniors and could look over the new sophs with a wise and critical eye—all in good fun, of course. We chose the following class officers, to lead us through what is considered to be the most difficult year of high school: Blake Lancaster. Ray Burgess, Thelma Clayton. James Cremins. A Junior Committee was formed, made up of the executive officers and homeroom representatives. The committee, after much work, succeeded in changing the school ring to suit the class. For activities, the second production of the opera club. Pirates of Penzance. was presented in March, again starring Eleanor Reid. The Footlight Club” put on Mrs. Temple's Telegram,” in which Dick Smith, one of our classmen, had the male lead. The basketball team won county laurels, reached the finals in the South Atlantic Tournament at Lexington, Virginia, and won the runner-up trophy for the suburban title in the Star Tournament. The girls' basketball team, not to be outdone, won the Sportsmanship Tournament, which made B. C. C. very proud of them. We gave an amusing tacky party and later a prom for the seniors in April. We made this a social triumph by reviving the program dance and the grand march. We had scarcely caught our breath after this last dance when June was upon us and we faced summer vacation, to be followed by the long-awaited senior year. June 20, 1939 Dear Diary: It's unbelievable but true. Our senior year is over and graduation is a thing of the past. If I am any judge of the class of '39. I am sure each of its members has somewhat of a lump in his throat at the thought that his high school days at B. C. C. are over. Nevertheless, this last year has been full of momentous occasions. After electing Blake Lancaster, Philip Maloney, Thelma Clayton, and James Cremins as class officers, we settled down to some hard work. Many of us started right in to contribute our talents to the Pine Tree, Tattler, and Chips. We were awfully proud when all three of these literary publications won honors at the Southern Interscholastic Press Conference. The murals in the front hall which were started last year were com- pleted early in the fall by Julia Lee Robey and Nancy Downes. We compoted in the annual Christmas Lane parade, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and won the trophy for the best marching unit. Senior songsters Barbara Dickinson. Mary Jane Moore and Ulrich Geller had important roles in lolanthe.” Thespians Dick Smith, Mary Garland Spencer. Jed Dyer. Alden Manchester. Mary Jane Benson, and James Cremins made “Nothing But The Truth a highly entertaining play. Contrary to past years the Junior-Senior and Senior-Junior Proms were combined most successfully. Career Night followed by After High School Night proved to be of great interest to the students. An Intra-Mural program was adopted during the activity period, thus providing the enjoy- ment of sports for everyone interested. One of the most outstanding features of the year was the organization of the Student Integrity Association by Helen Green, Katherine Fowler, Deborah Hambidge, and Lawrence Mosier. It is inaugurating an honor system covering all phases of school life. While this plan is still in its infancy, it is expected to become a definite part of B. C. C. The seniors’ gift to the school was a rose garden, landscaped by a committee of which Caroline Norfleet was chairman. The garden was presenied to the school on June 8. Another notable gift to the school was a telescope started by Harold Atkinson in his sophomore year and completed this year under the auspices of the Biology-Science Club. Our graduation week was naturally filled with both excitement and regret. The Senior picnic, the Prom. Class Day and the Alumni Dance afforded excitement, but the Banquet at the Mayflower, the Vesper Services followed by the Faculty Reception and finally Graduation itself left us with a feeling that might better be expressed by Longfellow: And a feeling of sadness comes o’er me That my soul cannot resist. STUDENT COUNCIL AND HONOR SOCIETY HONOR SOCIETY The Honor Society represents the cream of our crop of scholars. The members have been elected to this society because of their high standards of character and scholar- ship.
