Proverbs 1:2-6 President George K. Brushaber 1987-88 has been a very special year on the Bethel campus. Warm friendships, challenging courses, and encouragement from instructors who care have helped to shape our growth and enrich our lives. There have been exciting surprises and quiet joys. As we have learned to live together as a Christian community, we have sensed God's tender patience and celebrated His grace at work in and among us. From this year together each of us will carry with us memories, mostly happy but some painful. The knowledge and skills we have gaired and mere importantly the persons we are becoming are all rooted in our experiences at Bethel. What we have given has been as important as what we have received. This Spire yearbook will help to remind us of what and who has been important to us. And in all of this may we see the love of God transforming us into the image of Christ. Or behalf of all of us I want to express appreciation to those dedicated people who have worked so faithfully to make possible this edition of the Spire. Blessings and best wishes to each of you as you continue to discover the plans God has for you. George K. Lynn Thompson and Dave nelson, were the captains. It was a young team and there were many injuries, but they performed well under the circumstances. Cross country is a lot of fun, believe it or not. It is a sport that reaches the depths of a runner's endurance. It also builds that endurance to its potential as the weekly miles add up. Putting in miles with friends on the team and getting to know them helps to make the time pass by quickly. There seemed to be an extra sense of unity on the team this year. Between road trips, hill repeats, duck points, daily miles, date night, and weekly meets, there are a lot of special memories that made this season one to remember! •K. Football “The attitude at the beginning of the year was great and expectations were high. We had the best off-season production in the four years I've been here. This was encouraging. However, we were still low in numbers and had a very young team beginning to make strides physically. We knew we had our work cut out for us. “To reflect back, we had many injuries, a lot of pain, many defeats, and a lot of struggles. But, I believe what made the 1987 Bethel football team were relationships and friendships. It got hard mentally week after week to get up again. It seemed more worthwhile though, to know that all these guys were trying and really cared. “As a senior I will remember the great plays that the team had this season, but what will really stick out in my mind are the players I played along side and the coaches that worked for us. For these memories I count the cost worth it and would do it all over again! The last game of the season at the Metrodome. Soccer The 1987 season was filled with difficulties for the Bethel Mens Soccer team, with youth and inexperience combining with injuries to produce a disappointing result. Under sophomore captains John Printy and junior Scott Diddams, the Royals played with heart but lacked the experience and consistency to win games in the tough MIAC conference. The teams youth, which was mainly composed of freshmen and sophomores, found it difficult to produce a unified effort in their newly appointed positions. Because of this, missed opportunities on offense and defensive mistakes kept victory' just out of reach. Co-captain John Printy stated. Our problems stemmed from our inability to come together as a team until late in the year when they faced the leading teams in the conference.'' Coach Mark Johnson looked to returning players Scott Diddams. Kevin Anderson, Matt Webb, Chip Huber and John Printy to fill the shoes of last years eight graduating seniors. The team was also helped by freshmen Jeff Krohn, Randy Adelsmen, Roger Evans, Brad Shannon and Mark Bot-terill. Other players were Dan Todd, Steve Larson, Jack Ruth, Peter Knight and Marc Bolduc. Bethel soccer ended the year win-less in the MIAC conference, but received a great deal of experience and strengthened. With this year behind them, the team has found a new commitment and maturity needed to compete successfully in the future. We finished third in the Ml AC which is the highest any sport at Bethel has ever placed. The team was considered to be well-balanced with good depth. nancy Gilmore and Karen Callahan were named All-Conference. Honorable mention was awarded to Cheryl Winch. According to Coach Cindy Book, this team showed considerable dedication to God. to each other, and to the sport of volleyball. The season ended with good traditions winningat-mosphere, and respect within the conference. Success does seem to be the best word to describe the volleyball program at Bethel. With one senior, Karen Callahan, five freshmen, and five sophomores going into the 1987-88 season, the lady Royals were very young, fleedless to say. Deb Hunter had scheduled two very tough preconference tournaments. The first one was at St. Horbert College. Our Royals' rose to the occasion and finished in second place. Karen Callahan and Alii Kostberg, a freshman, were both chosen All-Tournament, next on to u.M.D. to compete against Division II opponents. Again Bethel rose to the occasion, though finishing third, the young team defeated a Division II opponent. Michigan Tech. Both Rostberg and Callahan were again chosen All-Tournament. Then on to conference play. The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has very good competition. starting with Concordia-Moore-head finishing second in the country in 1986-87. Bethel has held its own against this formidable competition. Though young, these ladies know what it takes to win. Winning doesn't come without sacrifice. They have paid the price to be 9-5 in conference play. Yes, we would like to be 14-0, but given time, and development of youth, this goal is attainable as is the conference title. - Coach Deb Hunter Team Members Cindi Aarsvold Barbi Bates Karen Callaghan Kelly Carlson Melanie Harr Steph Kondes Janine nelson Allison Rostberg Allison Smith Jackie Van Mark Manager Tracy Skogen Head Coach Deb Hunter Assistant Coach Heidi Howard Men's Basketball The mens basketball team had a season filled with ups and downs. While not finishing as high in the standings as was anticipated, it was the first season in the history of Bethel College that our Royals defeated the St. John Johnies both at home and on the road. This ended a nine year drought. The future for the Royals looks promising. During the dry land training before the season began, expectations were high for a berth in the conference playoffs. Throughout the entire season the team possessed a great work ethic along with positive team unity. In the opening games of the year, the Royal's went up against some formidable foes. The result of the first three games were 0-3. During the MIAC Thanksgiving Tournament the Royals won 2 of 3 and took home the consolation trophy. In conference games the final record was 7-9. The disheartening statistic about the Royals 7-9 conference record was that six of the nine losses were by a goal. The final overall record was 9-15. Only four seniors will be leaving this year's team. With strong defenses and good goaltending, the Royals will by looking to finish in a playoff spot next season. Throughout the year we built a strong sense of team unity that helped lead us to the best finish that Bethel has ever had in the MIAC. This finish also included five consolation champions at the MIAC tournament. Our success was also due to an incredible coach who served a dual purpose for Bethel tennis. He was our leader, but he was also a great friend, he cared very deeply for his players and it showed. This is the type of relationship that many players can only hope for. We feel very fortunate to have had Jim Bovver as our coach. Bethel will be losing six seniors to graduation this year. These players will include Doug Holm, Barry hui-zenga. Jay Substad, Brian Sivinski. Dan Magnuson, and Tim Weber. This may seem, like quite a blow to a team that consisted of only thirteen players, however, the team feels very optimistic about next season. Our returning players arc very strong competitors, and have the potential to be a great threat in the 1988-1989 season. iiw L. Track Our track team has enjoyed a fun year. Because we are a co-ed team, we get to enjoy the success of both the men's and women's teams. Indoor season produced three All-Americans. We are looking at outdoor nationals with great anticipation. This year we have more women qualifiers for the nCAA III nationals than ever before (totalling five). Because of this, the girl's team has a chance to place in the top ten nationally. For the men s team wc have one person qualified with four more who are very close. Since the team is young, wc anticipate great things in the next few years. We could tell you that we'd devised and implemented a plan for an underground 2.000 car parking garage below Lake Valentine that would be accessible, invisible, inexpensive, odorless, colorless, and purify the water at the same time. Or we could say we d changed every hallway bulb to a sunlamp so you could tan on the way to class. Or we'd duped everyone into thinking that going to chapel was cool. Would telling you that we'd outlawed the Bald and Formless'' from Sage make you chink that we were successful? Probably not. We could list all our ' accomplishments'' but you'd still yawn and flip to the index to find the drill team while we pat ourselves on the back. But we were successful. The senators proved that they were an enthusiastic, fun-loving, pragmatic, energetic, concerned, opinionated group of quasipoliticians. Big deal, right? Let us give you an abbreviated list of things we really did and. you can judge for yourself. We could tell you that you'll have a sand volleyball court next year. We could remind you that you now have to wail half as long for a phone by the p.o. s and that you can even call from the new A.C. phone to invite Johnny to Market Square for a Soy-burger. Or that we re providing a Sporto-Lock-cr by the video games complete with frisbees, footballs, soccerballs, vol-leyballs, canoe paddles, life jackets, (and if you order today wc will throw in this beautifully handicrafted stainless steel Ginsu knife set.) We’ve instigated the installation of one lifeline railing, a bridge to the mud parking lot, and lights to the Fountain Terrace parking lot. You now can study with your sugar-lips in the late night study area after the library closes. We've been the proud sponsors of Videopinion and Tabletents. For next year we got stipends for the yearbook and got the All School Banquet in the All School Budget. And you can use the A.C. computer area 8 more hours a week this year, and on weekends next year. Wc designed and aided in the establishment of the student chapel committee. Wc helped in the initial dream and planning to send 300 students to Urbana. Still not successful right? Know what? You're right, none of those things makes us successful. Our belief on senate is that success lies in our faithfulness to God. not in our accomplishments. We set out the year trying to be faithful with a theme verse from Philli-pians 2:2 United in Spirit. Intent on One Purpose. If you saw- us work, you know we were united. The purpose on which we were intent was to serve God and our school as unworthy slaves' (Luke 17:10). Our hope is that Bethelites will always dream big dreams for God. May God change Bethel to change the world! We hope that after graduation, wc will still be united — the body of Christ working together for His Kingdom! - Jon Dennis 127 A C-r UNEXPECTED ?! Campus Coordinators Sherri Knopf. Julie Ann Carlson. Fortunately, such descriptions only come from people who do not know what art is. At Bethel (as well as the outside world) a work of art is an exploration as well as a development of an idea. Being creative and presenting something in an unusual way are important criteria for producing art. Each student in Bethel's art department is given the freedom and technology to be creative and open to new ideas. 137 The Eugene Johnson Gallery Of Art ' Look Mom. no hands! l 6 Todd Tratz helps himself to rootbcer on the opening evening of the Senior Art Exhibition. The month of Nay not only brought final exams and the end of school but also a time for students to display their artwork. The Senior Art Exhibit opening reception was well attended and given its own flair by the bottled and labeled rootbcer designed by the students. The annual Raspberry Monday Exhibit consists of artwork submitted by any student. The year opened in the art gallery with a show of hand colored gelatin silver prints by Gloria De Filipps Brush. The diversity of ail and artists continued as the year progressed. Paintings by Paul Kramer and printmaking on handmade paper by Jerry Krcpps and Angie Mueller were displayed. In conjunction with Minnesota's celebration of hew Sweden 88. the work of six contemporary painters from Sweden was shown in April. 139 It was a season of firsts for the Department of Theatre Arts. A U.S. premiere has arrived at Bethel College. The Plague” written by world renowned Polish playwright Kazi mierz Braun and directed by Jeff Miller, gave the audience a chance to realize the evil that dwells in all of us. Bethel audiences got a glimpse of a brand new play by Dale Rott called Schemes and Dreams.” food shelves benefited from this production as every- audience member donated canned foods. The area premiere of Just So Stories made its appearance in January. Based on the book by Rudyard Kipling, Jeff Miller's production answered the questions of how the giraffe got it's long neck, the leopard it's spots, the rhino it's wrinkled skin, and the elephant it's trunk. During interim Dale Rott took a group of students to the Philippines to perform street theatre. The trip was a part of a long-range program between Bethel and the Philippine Baptist General Conference. The finale to the season was the production of A Midsummer Night s Dream” in which Director Meg Zauner utilized both hearing and hearing impaired actors in Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers. The use of American sign language and English were used to enforce and compliment each other. The 1987-88 season was one filled with firsts, and enhanced communications between countries and peoples. Matthew 5:13-16 Key Events 1987-1988 Bethel College St. Paul, Minnesota Twins Win World Series By Michael Martinez MIHHEAPOLIS, Oct. 26 - The scenes that turned the city streets from sedate to sheer madness Monday night could have happened anywhere. There was nothing unique about the celebrating - fans leaped onto their cars, honked their horns, shouted in uninhibited glee well into the next morning. It has been done before, in Detroit, Kansas City, even new York. But perhaps no one felt the happiness more than the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul, who weathered the unhappy storms of the previous ownership, who watched spectacular players find their riches with other teams, who endured the losing with only the slightest w'himpers. They were finally rewarded. The Minnesota Twins are certainly no dynasty - their off-season needs are clear -but they are a team that had a certain destiny. One year after losing 91 games and finishing sixth in the weakest division in baseball, they are World Series champions. The Twin Cities could not help themselves. More than an hour after the Twins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh and deciding game Sunday, 4-2. several thousand spectators lingered inside the curious little stadium known as the Metro-dome. They kept waving their funny handkerchiefs, kept roaring their joy, knowing this was a special moment in the city's - and the state $ - history. The Minnesota Vikings had been to the Super Bowl four times and lost; the north Stars had reached the final round of the Stanley Cup and found it empty; Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale had run for the presidency and been beaten. But the Twins, who got no respect even as they were winning their division, erased the stigma with one Series victory. We are not the Twinkies anymore, shouted the second baseman, Steve Lombardozzi, referring to the derogatory nickname sometimes applied to the team. I don't ever w'ant to hear that again. We are the Minnesota Twins. -Hew York Times AIDS: The Unstoppable Epidemic One of the major stories of the year had no identifiable face, no watershed event. Yet the AIDS epidemic was indisputably one of the most important developments of 1987 -as it was in 1986, as it will be in 1988. To deal with the epidemic, Reagan appointed a presidential commission of 13 people, many with dubious qualifications. After three months, the chairman, a doctor, resigned in frustration and was replaced by an admiral. The commission's final recommendations are supposed to appear next summer. Beyond that, the Administration busied itself in imposing compulsory AIDS tests on certain defenseless groups (federal prisoners and would-be immigrants, for instance), a move that compromised civil rights groups excoriated the Administration for inactivity, and the Hew York Times concluded that Reagan's lack of a coherent policy on AIDS was beyond comprehension or excuse. It has been only six summers since the first 31 cases were brought to offi cial notice - 31 mystery stories o healthy young men dying of a rar cancer and a rarer pneumonia. Th( statistics have been multiplying eve since, and so has the fear that sur rounds them. The census of the deac stands at 22,548 now. by the govern ment's conservative count. As man as a million and a half more Americans arc thought to be infected with the AIDS virus. The statistics about AIDS are irrelevant. Whether it's a 30,000 here, or 600 in England, or one in Japan, it's all irrelevant. Whether a person who has AIDS is an i.v.- drug user, or contracted it in the womb, or is a mother who contracted it from a husband, or is a gay man, doesn t matter. That we make this matter tells us something about ourselves not about the person suffering from AIDS. -Time IHAVEAIDS PLease hug me IcarvtmaKeyousicK 156 Panic Grips The Globe First came a vague forboding, a kind of free-floating anxiety. The U.S. said worriers, could not go on forever spending more than it would tax itself to pay for, buying more overseas than it could earn from foreign sales, and borrowing more abroad than it could easily repay. There had to be a day of reckoning, and it could unhinge the whole world economy. But when might it come? What form would it take? How bad might it be? Ho one could say, and so the forebodings could be pushed to the back of the mind. But then, slowly at first, the anxiety began to take on a shape that could be sensed if not exactly foreseen. On all the world's stock exchanges, prices had leaped up too far, too fast, to be sustained. The mood in the markets shifted from fantasy about instant wealth to nervousness about an inevitable correction'' ( wonderful euphemism). By Monday morning the concern was no longer vague but had taken on physical form • piles of papers littering brokers' desks, each representing a hastily scribbled order to sell stock; rows of numbers flashing on computer screens, bringing news of alarming price breaks in all the early-opening markets: Tokyo. Hong Kong, London, Paris, Zurich ... Then trading began in Mew York, and the unimaginable happened: a collapse on a scale never seen before - no not even in 1929. Prices went down, down, down, swiftly wiping out an entire year's spectacular gains. I just can't believe that this is happening, moaned one trader, as he took nonstop sell orders at Donaldson, Lufkin Jenrette. At lunchtime, brokers across the U.S. went hungry or ate sandwiches at their desks while trying to keep phone receivers pressed to both ears. This is going to make '29 look like a kiddie party,” shouted a trader on the Los Angeles floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange. Almost an entire nation became paralyzed with curiosity and concern. Crowds gathered to watch the electronic tickers in brokers' offices or stare at television monitors through plate glass windows. In downtown Boston, police ordered a Fidelity Investments branch to turn off its ticker because a throng of nervous investors had spilled out onto Congress Street and was blocking traffic. By the time the 4 p.m. closing bell rang at the Mew York Stock Exchange on what instantly became known as Black Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average had plunged 508 points, or an incredible 22.6%, to close for the day at 1738.74. Some $500 billion in paper value, a sum equal to the entire gross national product of France, vanished Into thin air. Volume on the Mew York exchange topped 600 million shares, nearly doubling the all-time record. Brokers could find only one word to describe the rout, an old word long gone out of fashion but resurrected because no other would do: panic. The frenzy rose as it spread once again across the globe. - Time The Dow’s Rocky Slide A series of shocks has triggered its recent plunges news Highlight U.S. troops were sent to Honduras for surveillance after the Micaraguan San-danistas crossed the Honduran border in pursuit of the contras. There were a lot of times when it wasn't conceivable. Especially in May when school got out - there were still a hundred pages to complete. But, from day one, my goal for this booh has been twofold: that it help build school spirit and that most of all, it would glorify God. A lot of planning and work has gone into the Spire since it was first suggested that it be revived two years ago. Thank you to those of you on the staff who volunteered your Monday nights to our over-crowded office, especially those of you who sacrificed studying for midterms or buck night' at the movies to make sure this went to press. Special thanks to Barb Martin for your encouragement and help and to Brian Gabbard for your continuous help and understanding. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever.” Psalms 30:12 176
