It was the best game, first of all because it was against the champion of the MIAC Soccer Conference, the strongest in the upper midwest. Gustavus Adolphus has been the champion for the last four years. Bethel came from behind to beat Gustavus 5-2, mainly because the Royals played up to their ability; difficult when playing as a club, not as a varsity team. Other highlights of the game were the four goals scored by Steve Jergcnson and the one goal and three assists scored by Steve Voth. The significance of this game is that Bethel, by winning the game, could have gone to the NAIA National Soccer Tournament, IF THEY HAD BEEN VARSITY. Because they were not varsity they did not meet the regulations set by the NAIA. Nevertheless, beating Gustavus meant a lot to the team who fought through the best season in the history of soccer at Bethel. Because the administration decided to make soccer a varsity sport, the possibilities for next year are exciting. Since almost the entire team is returning, plus a coach and some new players, I feel that the Bethel Soccer Team could once again be rated Number 1 in the state. We should have a strong possibility of representing Bethel College in the NAIA National Soccer playoffs. Steve Voth 1. Captain Steve Voth. John Nordstrom, Richard Voth, Joel Goff. The 1446 Arona sign in its potted plant with lanterns hanging from its’ post, greets the visitor to the history department corner. And Mrs. Bodien continues to keep students in line with her watchful eye. Students in the Library Chapel now enjoy the music from the pump organ which once held a place of prestige in the front room of the History house. Faculty and students from all departments come to the homey History corner to enjoy Doc's nicklc cup of coffee and cookie. Although the department now only has a corner to call it’s own, the profs often answer the phone with a fond nostalgic “History House”. The move brought havoc to the “millions” of books that the History profs have collected, and one can often find Jim Johnson gazing at his shelves of books in utter frustration. Probably the biggest change to the History department is that it has become more united with the rest of the campus. Whereas before the History House was outside the walk of the average student’s day, it now is often a slopping point for students from all departments, as well as History or Political Science. One rarely passes the offices without seeing someone chatting about classes, politics, history, or life in general. Their record was an amazing 9-0 and participated in the state women’s intercollegiate basketball tournament at Winona State College. The tournament proved too much for the Bethel round bailers, they were defeated in the first two contests. However, Miss Carol Morgan is to be congratualted for doing a fine job in leading the girls to a winning season. The biggest Accomplishment for the Wrestling Team came when Klostreich took three wrestlers to the N.A.I.A. tournament at Sioux City, Iowa. This is the first time that any Bethel athlete has ever tasted national competition. Bethel points were scored by Witzgall and David Hanks. Junior Dave Peterson 1973-74 captain, went scoreless throughout the tournament. “We went down to Iowa just for some exposure and came back with a tremendous attitude for next year,” says Klostreich. Coach Lyn Ford NATIONAL HANDBALL CHAMPION Terry Muck, 1968 graduate of Bethel College won the National Handball tournament at Austin, Texas in February. Terry is now the number one ranked handball player in the United States. Terry defeated defending champ. Paul Haber, in the semi-finals to qualify for the finals. Everyone is proud of Terry’s accomplishment. To help publicize the new handball courts at Bethel and show some of his skill, Terry conducted an evening clinic for the Bethel faculty and students. The response was great and much interest is being displayed in the use of our courts. FOUNDER’S WEEK As for many other things this year, Founder’s Week was held for the first time in Bethel’s new Physical Education Center. As well as involving a new setting, it involved the meeting of old friends, new friends, and new ideas. 80 FEATURED WERE Gordon G. Johnson Henry R. Brandt Millard J. While some concentrated on WAR Sc PEACE or some independent study, some spent hours in lab experience - such as aiding teachers in inner-city schools. Still others chose CAM PING. Included in this class were instruction and experience in Creative Bible Teaching, Programming, Directing, and Counseling. The course was designed to cover all types of camp situations, but resident camping was the primary concentration. During the course, students were required to compile a notebook with as much helpful material as possible covering the different areas of camping. A specialization project was required in one dimension of camp work, encouraging the student to develop a resource unit in that area. A third project was also required to aid the student in making a Creative addition to a camp program. But the highlight of the course was a week at Honcyrock Camp (Three Lakes, Wise.). Here the campers attempted winter camping. Cross-country skiing, down-hill skiing, snow-shoeing, broomball, sleighing, orienteering, and an overnight in the snow were crammed into the week by all. In the evenings, fantastic programs were provided by the students. The course ended with each camper knowing a strong bond of unity with those who shared the experience, and a new zest for life. (After all. isn't that what we all want and expect?) Thanks to the instructors, Carol. Mary, Jake, and Ken. Even though only three graduates display diplomas this year, the future looks great with 13 anxiously planning their turn next year. Interest among the underclassmen looks encouraging also. Since the move, Erie has remained at the old campus to keep vigil over his second home (since he came from Sweden around the turn of the century). Yes, he is still holding the fort. He checks the boiler constantly, mows the lawn, cheers anyone visiting our deserted grounds, and whatever else he can find to be done. In another sense-Eric has not been left. His place at the New Bethel is filled with rcminsccnce of the Old Bethel and his boundless supply of Swedish jokes over a cup of Margaret Anderson’s coffee. We can’t forget those frequent challenges offered to anyone who might pop into the gym at the same time as this respected “HORSE” player. His offers arc seldom accepted by anyone who has been around enough to know that he is super-tough competition. This is only, of course, during those long afternoons when he has no work to do. «- o OO u •o — c o S3 O .12 - o -C w 13 JZ C ce o CC 00 c JZ — £ 15 o D E t- o z o V- -C JZ -o X S3 —- S3 d c T3 Si 3 o O i— 4 c 1 l—« S3 — - ul —• X . CALIF. Bruce llcrrstrom Ron Elliott Pastor Minister of Youth 221 Dear President Lundquist: I am just writing to express my joy and appreciation for the role played by Bethel College students at the premiere showing of “Time To Run.” As 1 write this letter, the film has one more day to run. We have shown to about 14,000 people and over 1,100 have responded to the invitation to receive Christ or to renew their committment to Him. Our counseling staff has had a very large and very rich task. Among the key people on our staff of counselors we have had a good number from Bethel. As a matter of fact, wc could not have had the quality ministry that we did have if it were not for Bethel students. We are deeply appreciative. The idea of preparing a task force to penetrate society for Christ is an ever increasing reality! So I say “Thank You” to you and your colleagues there at Bethel. We extend our appreciation as well to the students who did much to share with so many. Sincerely yours in Christ’s love. Daniel H.
