Thanks for comfort in despair PRESIDENT Prosident Carl H. Lundquist Presidont Lundquist phoned in a bulletin from the Conference daily. In the midst of world despair, comfort was sought by leaders, including our president, in Berlin to discuss evangelism. This was the highlight of the 1966-67 school year for Dr. Carl H. Lundquist. According to the President, the principles discussed at the World Council or Evangelism had concrete accomplishments that can be applied directly to Bethel: It sharpened our focus as a college on the reasons that we are educating students. That is, to renew the emphasis that we are existing to serve Christ by producing well-trained, competent leaders. The meetinq also emphasized the relationship of our Christian services to our academic work. Our president stressed the idea that Bethel s work must never be done in a stagnant, compulsory spirit. The work we do for Jesus Christ now and the continuance of this work after leaving Bethel must always be done in a spirit of love. 'We are preparing today's students to serve Christ. In the month of November students. faculty, and friends, helped President Lundquist celebrate his birthday. His family was present to witness this happy surprise. VICE-PRESIDENT9 AND DEANS Deans: Wallace Anderson, Catharine Williams, and Owen Halleen Many students have come into the deans' offices for consultation or just to talk. The deans are a group of individuals who are very much concerned with the welfare of each individual student within the Bethel community. They act on discipline problems, as advisors to various activities on campus, and in regard to on-campus and off-campus housing. Their biggest concern is helping and counselling students who want their help and advice. Our vice-presidents play an important role to Bethel in relationship to the financial need of the co lege and seminary in addition to their role of leadership as our executive administrators. Dean Webster Muck V.P. and Dean of Sem. Gordon Johnson CAMPUS PASTOR Dedicated to serve the students at Bethel, Pastor Al Glen is in his th:rd year as campus pastor. Leading and planning the chapel services, teaching courses in the Christianity department, and counseling with students are the various tasks of this position. In addition, he works with the Christian Service activities and helps with the spiritual life functions on campus. All of this keeps Pastor Glen involved in a diversity of Challenge.' Pastor Glen ADMINISTRATION Investments and 8onofits H. Wyman Malmsten Comptroller Purchasing and Kenneth A. Whito Enterprises Richard Walters Public Relations Bursor Dir. of Publications Dwight Jessup Milford Carlson Perry Hedberg Many men make up the central core of workers who endeavor to maintain Bethel's role as a top rated Christian college. The public affairs staff strives together to keep the world outside informed of a'l the latest happenings in our Bethel community. The difficult task of scheduling classes and admitting new students lies in the capable hands of our registrar. The men in the business office are constantly working behind the scenes to keep cur school running financially smooth. Development Charles W. Ferguson Registrar and Admissions Paul Finlay LIBRARY Carol Christensen, Dennis Graf, Dalphy Fagerstrom, James Sheldon Bethel $tudert$ find the library useful for that study date, ' for that term paper research, or for the evening paper or magazine review. There are 46,000 books and bound periodicals available to them in addition to music and speech records. A special service offered is a loan privilege through the Twin City public and college libraries. With the aid of the librarians, their secretaries, and student assistants these resources can be used to their fullest extent. 18 Joan Draeger, Mary Leimberer. Eileen Schwarti STUDENT HELP Jerry Loomis—Kitchen Jim Mullins—Post Office Eunic Walkup and Woody DaWberg—Print Shop Approximately 225 students are benefiting this year from campus employment. The more familiar jobs include those in the bookstore, the coffee shop, the cafeteria, and the library. Other jobs are created by members of the staff who choose student assistants to grade tests, to type, or for any other task which needs to be dene. An important position for anyone concerned with dorm life is that of resident assistant. College Work-Study, a program provided for by the government makes employment possible for an increasing number of students by providing 90% of their wages. It is designed particularly for students from low-income families. 8ECRETARIE8 AND 8TAFF Coffee Shop—Margaret Anderson, Alice Steen, and Bernico Oberg Financial Aids—Botty Hardlo Health Service—Florence Winquist Print Shop—Marlys Borg, Gary Quick Without the assistance and support of the loyal secretary a boss can do nothing, which proves to be true of the Bethel administration. Another group which is a must on campus is the staff of dedicated workers who, too often, labor diligently without thanks or recognition. ART The Department of Art serves a valued role in the cultural growth of the campus as a whole and in the specific preparat'on of those who wish to approach art as a vocation. Those who are looking forward to teaching art in the secondary public schools; those who wish basic art training withir a liberal arts program in preparation for graduate or professional art studies; and those who are interested in art as a cultural expression and are anxious to develop their abilities in various visual media are encouraged to consider this field. Eugene Johnson Stu Luckman Robert Nelson 24 25 BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES 26 The wonder of God's creation In the courses offered by the Department of Biological Sciences, students may achieve a realistic understanding of the significant effect which the sciences have had upon our culture and the life of the individual. Work in the laboratory provides experience in careful observation, reflective thinking, and other elements of the scientific method. The study of human structure and function is essential for an understanding of human behavior and thus is related to work in the social sciences. Through field trips the students may gain an appreciation of the varied forms of life and the importance of conservation. Finally, students are encouraged to develop an adequate philosophy of nature through the consideration of such topics as speciotion and the origin of life. 27 CHRI8TIANITY The purposes of Bethel College demand that aH of its areas of learning contribute to a student's basic appreciation of the Christian life. A Department of Christianity, however, has been established out of the conviction that the Christian faith itself constitutes a significant area of study in its own right. Courses have been designed to help students: (I) gain skills and essential background knowledge for the study of Biblical literature; (2) enter into a fuller understanding of the Wore of God both by viewing it in its broad perspective and by a more intensive study of its individual books; (3) appreciate the essential beliefs of evangelical Protestantism and the role of the Christian church in contemporary life; and (4) develop those attitudes which will lead him into a more sensitive awareness of the deeper dimensions of the Christian life. 29 Robert Mounce Walter Wcssel Pastor Alfred Glenn ENGLISH The department accepts the responsibility of leading students into a meaningful reading of literature. Students are encouraged to relate themselves to the ideas and emotions of men of letters. Such pursuits provide intellectual and aesthetic satisfaction. With the truth of the Bible as a constant focal point, continued read ing and personal relation develop a valid perspective of life, on enriched imagination, on understanding of the strengths and frailties shared by all men, and an enlarging vision of man and his human and divine responsibilities. Then, too. since our society is highly verbal, the department assists the student to understand his language and to master the skills of communication. Encouragement is given in various ways to be creative. One source of satisfaction is reflective thinking and v riting. Critical writing of this kind was presented by majors from the department who participated in the Twelfth Annual Conference of English Majors at Augsburg College. The topic of the conference was Modern Drama. Another source was explored by a major, Robert Monroe, who donated a scale model of the Globe Theater to the department, an invaluable teaching aid. Rolland Hein Max H. James Mary Sodorgren 31 Wallaco Nelson Chris Weinh HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE History and Political Science Studies in history and political science lead to knowledge of how men lived and interacted with other men in the past; how institutions, practices and beliefs cane into being: what men have thought about political relationships; and how they currently practice government and politics. The main concern is that through these and other studies stucents better understand themselves and life about them. Loren Crabtree Roy Dolton Richard Franklin 33 James Johnson James Jordan Olaf Olsen FOREIGN LANGUAGE Foreign language students develop elementary proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the foreign idiom and to acquaint the student with important aspects of the culture of the country involved. Today language teaching theory includes strong emphasis upon hearing and speaking the foreign language. In our thirty-booth language laboratory, students may listen to tapes which are recorded by persons whose native tongue is being studied. The laboratory is monitored by assistants who are competent in the various languages. Alta Jacobson Effie V. Nelson Lillian Ryberg Sponivh Club Cabinet I. Cervantes G. Notforlund. B. Millilon, L. Wilson, L. Olson. Learning more about the Spanish culture and missions in Mexico stimulates participation in 'he Spanish Club. Reaching this aim the club took thirteen members and exchanged the snow of Minnesota for the sunshine of Mexico. Other ways which they have reached this aim include a Spanish dinner, Ballet, and picnic with Latin American students from the University. Robert Mounce 35 James Jordan Walter Wessel MUSIC The objectives of the Department of Music are three-fold: I) to extend the cultural, aesthetic, and spiritual background of all students in the college by enabling them to develop an appreciation for music through personal understanding and evaluation. 2) To provide o climate in v hich the music student may develop his abilities that he may become a fully qualified musician-teacher with a distinct Christian mission. 3) To provide opportunity for the development o£ an understanding of church music and to encourage students to assume positions of positive leadership as oianists, organists, vocalists and music directors in the evangelical church. The Music Department feels that through a broad liberal arts curriculum these objectives are best realized. Robert Berglund Gordon Howell Garvin McGettrick Not pictured Cdwoid Tfiorrat Oliver Mogclc C. Howard Smith Julius Whittinger PHILOSOPHY A recent introduction to philosophy is entitled Philosophy For Pleasure. Beyond the almost excruciating pleasure of having gotten through a philosophy final, there is prior pleasure both in the search for and in the possession of reliabe knowledge. Knowledge is for worship (worthship). And the enduring questions: Can I know God? Wlial is good and what is evil? How do we know if it is beautiful? when adequately answered, issue in worship. Dr. Butler listens attentively. From Tillich to Sibley, from metaphysics to ethics, from pacifism to ontology, and from God to society runs the gamit of the philosophy club. Man, the curious student, has confronted man, the knowledgeable teacher, and the ensuing dialogue has been formative of both. At times interest has waned and attendance has dwindled, but the pursuit of knowledge and the development of awareness have served as the impetus for the club's attempt to understand and reiate orthodox theology to the contemporary intellectual milieu. 39 PHYQICAL SCIENCE AND MATH The purposes of the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics are two-fold: (I) to provide an understanding and appreciation of the physical world and experience with scientific reasoning and methodology; (2) to prepare students for graduate study or for careers in scientific research, medicine, engineering, teaching, or other professions involving physical science or mathematics. Unpicturod: Kenneth White end Robert Blomgren. James Rodgers II IN THE HOMEGOING of Dr. Quentin Bohne Bethel lost a man who typifiec all of its ideals for a teacher in a Christian college—continued academi growth, high standards of professional excellence, a broad range of human interest, genuine concern for students, personal commitment to Christ and the practical integration of faith and learning. While a full-time teacher at Bethel lie continued working on his doctoral pre gram at the University but then locked to the field of industry for more pract-cal experience and research as an interlude in teaching ... But his calling to the teaching profession remained prominent and brought hir i back to Bethel in 1964 to serve as professor and chairman of the department of physics and mathematics and to further Christian ministries at Bethany Baptist until his untimely death on December 3, 1966. As chairman of the faculty committee on campus planning, his keen analytical mind was responsible for much of the preliminary planning for the relocation o the College to Arden Hills. He has left a great void in our hearts and on our staff. We pray that God President Carl H. Lundquist THE STANDARD January 2. 1967 t PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Physical Education Department encompasses a vital aspect of a student's educational experience at Bethel. Through the Basic Skills program, physical fitness and the learning of new skills is stressed. Through an extensive intramural program the opportunity is provided for using one's skills to obtain regular exercise, to estab'ish social relationships with others, to develop leadership characteristics, and to have FUN. Through the exoanding intercollegiate program the challenges and demands of athletic competition are provided for the more highly skilled athletes. Through the professional training program, stress is placed on helping to train students to serve in various areas of leadership in the field of recreation and teaching. Foundalicnal to all facets of the program is an attempt to remind everyone that our bodies ore the temple of the Holy Spirit and that everything in life should be done ... for the glory of God. Jean Anderson Dave Cox Gene Glader S’ ! 43 Maurice Shields Marilyn Starr PQYCHOLOGY AND EDUCATION Psychology has been defined os a science which studies the behavior of humans and animals. At Bethel, psychology courses are designed to familiarize students with the empirical facts and theories concerning the nature and causes of behavior. The courses also provide practical experience in using the research methods of psychology along with investigating the ways in which psychology and evangelical Christianity arc related. The Department of Education provides a program with opportunities for students who are interested in learning to teach. An understanding of skills, methodology, the educative process and children at various age levels ‘s acquired through courses, observation in the schools and student teaching. Within the Education House was provided a Curriculum Materials Center widely used by the students. A 3M grant in audiovisual materials and equipment became a great asset in furthering the program. Economics and business offerings were expanded by making Oscar Lund a full-time faculty member.. Benjamin Pearce continued as part-time instructor of Accounting and Robert Underwood also enriched the offerings in economics. Claude Stipe spent the year working on his doctoral dissertation while on sabbatical leave, and Ivan Fahs was on special leave doing research and teaching in the Department of Preventive Medicine of Harvard University. Thomas Correll and David T. Johnson filled their places. Donald Larson came to strengthen offerings in anthropology and linguistics. A new international dimension was added to first-semester sociology offerings by part-time teaching of Nelson Kisulu, a citizen of Kenya. Richard Ericson directed the Bethel College and Seminary Research Center Study during the year, so part of his usual teaching load was shared by Gerald Dahl. Field opportunities in social work were expanded and enriched. Faculty research projects included a study of relationships and moral va'ues by David Moberg, analysis of economic literacy by Oscar Lund, participation in a cooperative college study of student shoplifting, preliminary exploration of interdisciplinary social science courses, and guidance of a large number and wide variety of student projects. Coach Dave Cox, who concluded his tenure as the gridiron head, had counted on a strong veteran nucleus. However, he lost half of his starting backfield—Barnell Cox and .Bob Nolin, and the unexpected loss of senior tackle 3ruce Armstrong hurt the line. There were, nevertheless, signs of promise. Much of the excitement revolved around the play of the first offensive line, consisting of center Nelson Otto, wingmen Don Bester and Larry Schultz, and goalie Karl Smith. Otto took individual scoring honors and Smith did a commendable job of tending the nets before he left at the semester break. The season also indicated promise for the future. Led by its first hockey coach, Bob Emahiser, the Royal puckstcrs increased last season's schedule by four games, donned new club uniforms, and created enthusiastic student interest. A combination of these factors have led school personnel to consider the possibility of hockey participation on an intercollegiate level in the future. The group had to cope with bad weather, losing athletic seasons and a frequent lack of fan enthusiasm. The group, composed of four girls and four guys, introduced several new features. The girls came up with a set of new and stylish outfits. They also traveled in style, flying a representative to the Bemidji basketball game. This, of course, was a first in cheerleading. Because of the lack of student interest, few buses were chartered for away athletic events. The Cheerleaders are hopeful, however, that this situation will be chanced before next fall. New to the scene this year was the transformation of Edgren’s basement into a children's nursery, and the woman's locker room into a living area for the male guests. 178 BETHEL CONCERT 9ERIE8 180 Jerome Hines—October 10. Munich Chamber Orchestra—October 31 Directed by Stan Olsen, the Concert Series became a reality this year after several years of discussion by the Student Senate. Us purpose is to stimulate the cultural atmosphere on campus by attracting interna-•ionally known personal and performing groups. An excellent array was presented this year ranging from opera by Jerome Hines to blues and standards by Norman Luboff. Also included, but not pictured was Eva Knardahl, concert pianist. Sanford 196 SOURCES OF CHRISTIAN FAITH A major in Bible will learn the disciplines of exegetical skill and be lead to an understanding of the historical progression of redempted revelation. He is aided in delineating the major Biblical themes and doctrines ard gains an appreciation for the cultural and spiritual contexts of the Scriptural message, and he becomes acquainted with the history of traditional and contemporary ideas and trends in Biblical studies. A. Conrad A. Miekoltan E. Omark R. Youngblood R. Ward INTERPRETATION OF CHRISTIAN FAITH The course offerings in the historical field seek io develop in the student a knowledge of the historical, cultural, and theological backgrounds out of which the great movements and ideas in the history of the church have arisen, and provide a working understanding of the providential purposes of God in the world through the church as well as a basis for an awareness of his position and mission os a Christian. M. Anderson C. Boss D. GSuston V. Olson N. Magnuson APPLICATION OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH This department instructs the student how to inact the seminary motto, The Man of God Communicating the Word of God. It is this division which fulfills the second half of the seminary's two-fold approach to ministerial training: study in books and study in life. The goal is to foster awareness of the breadth and depth of human experience while relating the word of God to human needs and to provide opportunity for the seminarian to express himself as communicator and interpreter of the Biblical message which motivates hearers to decision. C. Anderson J. Baumann Dr. C. Larson R. Omark ADS . . Thanks WHAT IS A CONFERENCE BAPTIST While the ideal Confe'ence Baptist shares the ’’eeling of the Apostle Paul that he is far from having reached full spiritual maturity, he is pressing on toward that goal in the light of New Testament standards which constitute a dynamic uplifting influence upon his life. His own Christian journey began with God’s miracle of the now birth. Awareness of his personal salvation has imparted to him both a sense of certainty and an evangelistic zeal. He has become so genuinely concerned about the neec of all men to acknowledge Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord of their lives that ho participates actively in the world of the chu-ch and witnesses personally about Christ to those with whom he comes in contact. His witness is strengthened by a genuine commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in which everything in life has become important to him only in its relationship to Christ and His kingdom. His personal life has a warm contagious quality, reflecting the presence of the Holy Spirit through such characteristics as love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith, and self-control. He has made the Bible his standard for faith and conduct and is growing in his Biblical knowledge. The Affirmation of Faith of the Baptist General Conference is for him a helpful summary of the major teachings of the Word of God which has become the handbook of his life. He is now as much at home in the unseen spiritua world as in the material world. He has discovered devotional exercises which assist him to live in both of these worlds at the same time. His quiet time with God serves to deeoen his ultimate impact for Christ upon society. He belongs to the whole church of Jesus Christ. While he is a conscientious member of a Baptist General Conference church and participates in its worship, witness, and service with conviction and enthusiasm, he numbers as his brothers and sisters in tho Lord all who ove Jesus Christ whatever may be their denominational affiliation, racial background, or cultural standing. Consequently, he desires that his work in his church contribute to the -whole body of Christ. f course, no Conference Baptist completely fulfills this ideal. But the mission of the Baptist General Conference is to lead an increasing number of people throughout the world to begin this journey by personal commitment to Jesus Christ and then to assist all to grow in the achievement of these spiritual goals.
