HIM SPIRE Editor____________ Ass't Editor______ Business Manager Photographer______ City Editor_______ Treasurer ________ Advisers _________ ___ Edward Stayton ------Lois Mitchell Edward Viren Jr. ____Richard Lovell Carol Joy Turnwall Norris Magnuson — Eugene Johnson Ivar Anderson l Published bu The Students of BETHEL COLLEGE AND SEMINARY ST. PAUL MINNESOTA 3 Jn honor of ■his spring marks the completion of twenty-nine years of faithful teaching for Miss Esther Sabel, professor of Religious Education. The many winning ways which make her so unforgetable to all with whom she comes in contact have warmed the hearts of Bethel students through her years of service on our campus. Her ability to cast aside irrelevant details and come to the heart of a problem has made her a favored counselor to young people here. Through her efficient manner, she commands the respect that makes others ready to follow her and to have confidence in her. It is easy for her to overcome the differences in education, age, and position and put herself in another's place. Her everpresent friendliness and sympathetic attitude inspire others to have confidence in themselves. The sincere interest which Miss Sabcl has shown to students has encouraged many to go on with renewed strength to countless avenues of service for the Lord. Many leaders possess some of these desirable qualities, but few possess the great array which make Miss Sabel a favorite with all of us. Because of this, and of all that she has done to make our school what it is, we dedicate this book to her in sincere appreciation. Jn memory of RALPH 111. LRRSOIl 6 t may be in the valley where countless dangers hide ' The words of this hymn of dedication no doubt passed the lips of Ralph Larson many times during his life. Little did anyone realize how dangerous those valleys of service would be in his life, for last fall our conference people were shocked with the news of his death on an Ethiopian mission field. After Ralph had given less than two years of sacrificial service, the Lord saw fit to end his earthly ministry. On November 13, 1951, while riding on his motorcycle to survey new fields, he was shot down by an Ethiopian man. It is hard to realize why it should be that this effective testimony should be so suddenly snatched away and yet we rest in the promise that someday we'll understand. Our Bethel campus was stunned at the news of Ralph's death because it was but a few short years ago that he was a student leader among us. His winning personality and fervent zeal for saving the lost was an inspiration to all who knew him. And yet, Ralph would not have us mourn his death, but rather have us pray and give to a greater extent than ever before. His most earnest plea would probably be, won't someone go and take my place to tell those who have never heard, the marvelous story of God's grace. Are we willing to answer this plea? 8 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, hut the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which mans wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. I Corinthians 2:12,13 9 DR. HENRY C. WINGBLADE PRESIDEI1I He is a gentleman and a scholar is a compliment which finds its personification in our beloved president. With his deep emphasis on Christian love as the outflowing of a truly Christ-like life. Dr. Wingblade has found his way into the hearts of many students, and through his own living of this precept he has given an added note of sincerity to a Christian campus. 10 DEfln OF COLLEGE C. EMANUEL CARLSON With his every effort bent on producing high quality Christian leadership, Dean Carlson first demonstrates this leadership principle and then encourages others along its pathway. His advice has been invaluable in helping many to come to the right solution in their varied academic and spiritual crises. He has shown himself to be a friend to those who seek Christian counsel and encouragement in spiritual living. DEfln OF THE SEMINARY EDWIN J. OMARK Because of his unusual ability to satisfactorily mingle business with religion and both with pleasure. Dean Omark has become a friend and an inspiration to many Bethelites. His warm Christian attitude has helped these students reach a much higher plain of spiritual maturity. His life has proved to those who know him that intimacy with Christ is more than a theological abstraction. ASSISTANT TO TOE PRESIDENT H. WYMAN MALMSTEN Accepting his work as a calling from God, H. Wyman Malmsten focuses his energy and wholehearted devotion toward the accomplishing of his many duties. He has found a certain respect from student and faculty alike for his tireless effort and congenial attitude. In him seriousness and cheerfulness are blended together v ith zeal to make a conscientious servant of God. 11 ALPHIN C. CONRAD, Th.B.,A.B.,B.D.,Th.M. For some it is the first time that they have willingly yielded all of their talents to the cause of telling others about our wonderful Lord. The joy of kneeling with a lost soul and then pointing him to Christ has been that of many gospel team members. These are the experiences which will live the longest in the memory of each Bethel student. 69 70 SOPHOMORE RETREAT CONCERTS Miss Mildred Bisgrove The Senior Class presented Bethel's student body with a wonderful treat by sponsoring Mr. Raymond McAfee of Chicago in an evening concert. Mr. McAfee's rich baritone voice will long be remembered in the hearts of those who heard him. Bethel's own string ensemble gave of their talents many times during the school year to the students and friends of Bethel. Their concerts are a source of inspiration and enjoyment to those who appreciate fine music. Mr. Raymond McAfee 72 Valdeko Kangro, Mildred Bisgrove, Kaljo Raid zA [ztodij tt The Junior class, in keeping with the trend of past years, presented a Christ centered play on the evenings of March 21 and 22. Melody , by Kent Prcll, was directed by Miss Susan Rusin-ko, instructor in English, ond was given of Min-nohoha Acadomy. In tho drama, Christian life is on integral part of the action. The Freshman Retreat, Homecoming, an all-school roller skating party, and Prospective Studonts' Days, wore but a few of the successful activities under their sponsorship. 76 RELIGIOUS COUNCIL Our exceptionally efficient Religious Council hos been the cause of a number of well planned religious functions of our campus this year. With Jim Rehn-berg as their able leader, they have supervised the religious aspects of our school in a vory commendable woy. Some of the unforgettable times like Deeper life Week, all-day prayer meeting, the St. Paul Choral Club Concert, and the new Home Missions Week were oil a result of the work of this organization. 77 left to right, Ruth Chisholm, Mae lundblad, Ruth Danielson, Jim Rehnberg, Cordon Poulson, Herbert Hage, Roger Bergeson, Mel Wintersteen. The orgonizotion on our campus which probably influenced more people than any other this year wos our Chapel Choir. An extended spring tour to the west coast, beginning immediately after graduation and climoxing with the great centennial conference is scheduled and will undoubtedly be the high point of this year's activity. Their ministry at special school occasions and in the churches of our St. Paul area has been a blessing to all listeners. The director. Professor C. Howord Smith, with the cooperation of each choir member, has made this one of the choir's most successful years. mALE CHORUS Row One: Don Erickson, Ronold Nelson, Jim Hubbord, Peter Unrun, Bill Slivko, Bob Fronzen, Ed Erickson, Nels Stjernstrom. Directing the chorus was Professor Nels Stjernstrom, whose oble leadership molded them into a well trained group. A tour through several mid-western stoles was the bosic activity of the group, but thoir performances in chapel and in the Twin City churches have been greatly appreciated. An addition to the chorus is the Courier Quartet which returned to school this yeor after touring Europe, especially Scon-danavio. This quartet, in addition to singing with the male chorus, is well known throughout our conference for their inspiring concerts. @ouni t IZuwitet Lcn Anderson, John Soneson, Ronald Nelson, Don Peterson. I Corinthians 9:24, 25 87 Clifford Anderson Dwight Anderson James Baxtor Charles Borgesan Ray Brace FOOTBALL With the uncertainty of the draft situation and the lock of returning letter-men, footbcll at Bethel was in a precarious position at the beginning of the school season, and the thought of discontinuing football wos heard throughout the campus, but not for long. A few insistent fellows and a determined coach put their efforts to work and soon had a team aggregated and a spirit of cooperation worked up. The record of three losses and one victory doesn't in any measure express the success of the season. Several games were cancelled because opponents were unable to field a team. The most outstanding accomplishment of the season was that football remained at Bethel. Coach Elmer Fischer End and captain Philip Carlson leaps high in the air to grab a pass from a teammate in Bethel's lone victory of the season against Morris. Finally, it has come. To be ready for the Baptist General Conference meetings in June, it is a port of the centennial building project of the conference. It is the desire and prayer of the Bethel student body and faculty that the building can be used to exalt the name of Jesus Christ in athletics as well as all other realms of campus life. BASKETBALL Athletic Director Del Ray Peterson With the advent of the new gymnasium basketbcll at Bethel acquires a new role in extra-curricular activities. After one of the finest seasons in Bethel basketball history the athletic status of our school has gained a much desired reputation, and to gain o con-ference recognition is the hope of the athletic endeavors at Bethel. Athletic Director Del Ray Peterson tutored the Indians for his second term and Captain Pete Unruh led the fast-breaking quintet from the forward spot. 95 LOCKER ROOM ACTIVITY left.
