GlVErH HT °F THY Wo«DS PS- 1X9:130 rm Published by the students of BETHEL COLLEGE AND SEMINARY ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA ADOLF OLSON In sincere appreciation lor his spiritual counsel and faithful instruction the students of Bethel College and Seminary dedicate the Spire of 1948 to Adolf Olson, beloved professor of systematic theology, who this spring completed his twenty-ninth year of service in the seminary. His mild manner, his quiet dignity, his understanding helpfulness, and Iris scholarship will always be remembered by his students. Bethelites know him as one who is filled with the Spirit of God and whose life strongly exhibits the fruits of Christianity. pag 5 page 7 ■ ©6cd page 10 pcgo 11 PRESIDENT HENRY C. WINGBLADE, M.A., D.D. Depth of thought, exaltation of language, and a command of the words of great men mark him as a man of letters. Sincerity in prayer and purity in life and speech indicate that he is a man of God. Combining scholarship with faith, he is a living illustration of the tradition of the school he directs. 12 p-ago 13 page 14 A But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then. peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocricy. Proverbs 1:5 pago 27 The year 1947 was an eventful one in the history of Bethel College, for it saw the crystallization of plans for expanding into a four-year school. The introduction of the third year of college studies marks the adoption of a new policy for developing the program of the school. Full academic accrediting was secured from the University of Minnesota for the new senior college curriculum, and plans are going forward to provide possibilities for majors in literature, sociology, history, philosophy, psychology and education, and religious education. Accordingly, the Spire takes pride in presenting the first junior class of Bethel College. THELMA BURCESON SECRETARY Bristol, Conn. Students are classified as juniors, sophomores, five quarter-credits with an honor point ratio of at or freshmen in these pages according to the follow- least 1.0; sophomores, no less than forty quartering academic standard: juniors, no less than ninety- credits; freshmen, less than forty quarter-credits. pago 28 VERNON D. Our first team composed of Harold Christenson and Lee Kingsley established a superior rating and were undefeated in debate, receiving award certificates. Lee Kingsley won first place in public speaking receiving the Watchel Award given by the Tau Kappa Alpha Forensic Honor Society of the University of Denver. Harold Christenson won an excellent rating award in discussion and public speaking. Although this team was Bethel’s first entry in the Rocky Mountain Speech Conference, they established a very worthy reputation for our school among the judges and participants of the colleges and universities of the Rocky Mountain area. The national debate question for the year was. Resolved: ‘‘That a federal world government should be established.” Besides the Rocky Mountain Speech Conference, the team participated in the Annual Discussion and Debate Conference at Iowa State Teachers college, the Annual Red River Valley Forensics Tournament at Concordia college, the Eau Claire State Teachers College Speech Meet, and the Northwest Annual Debate Tournament at St. Thomas college. They competed against such teams as Notre Dame, St. Olaf college, the University of Denver, the University of Southern California, the University of Colorado, the University of Iowa, and others. In all of these tournaments our students established a very commendable record in debate, discussion, oratory, and extemporaneous speaking. Locally our teams debated with St. Thomas college, the University of Minnesota, and Hamline university. yxigo 90 LEE KINGSLEY HAROLD CHRISTENSON As a final climax to the year's activities Bethel, represented by Lee Kingsley and Charles Germany, took the junior college debating trophy at the Minnesota Collegiate Debate Tournament, which was held at the University of Minnesota. Lee kingsley was one of two representatives from the junior colleges who discussed world .federation in a panel, which was broadcasted over the University of Minnesota radio station. Regular college conference football has been the dream of the athletic department ever since the days of former coach Bill Adam. Last fall this hope was realized when thirty-five fellows came out for football. Arch Skalbeck was engaged as coach, and out of this material he molded a comparatively strong team. The Indians played their initial game on September 19, 1947, on the memorable Edwards Field in a muddy game with Rochester. Other games were played with Esthcrvillc and Austin junior colleges, the game with Austin being the Homecoming game. Throughout the season Bethel lost three games and triumphed once. There is much potential strength for a great team next year since football has become a first-rate sport at Bethel. BcJx alt page 107 One of the most successful basketball seasons was completed at Bethel this year. Out of fifteen games played, eleven were decided victories. A good representation turned out for basketball, many of them being regulars from last year’s cagers. Weeks of practice and scrimmage under Coach Edwards brought the team into fine shape. In the first game of the season the Bethel quintet edged out Bethany 40 to 36. The Indians, led by their captain, Leroy Sandberg, triumphed over Rochester, 39 to 38, in a thrill-packed game. Two hard-to-lose games were dropped to Sioux Falls college and Northwestern Bible school, but at the close of the season Bethel reinstated itself by whipping Northwestern 49 to 35. Many commendable achievements were gained by this year's cagers. One of the most significant was Bethel’s capturing second place in the Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference. Also, Kenneth Creenman, Bethel’s ace guard, was elected to the All-conference team. page 108 F.d Eklof Evcret Johnson Lowell Bergeson Conwell Lindstrom page 109 Bai Ui ra Z cotzHroaid.
