The Senior class this year was one of the largest that has been graduated from the Seminary. There are many opportunities for those graduating now; the chaplaincy, full-time pastorates, and part-time pastorates and additional schooling. The Seniors had a party at Cedarholm's at Forest Lake and at Dr. Karlson's. The class gave as its gift to the school, a desk for Edwin Omark's office. The Middlemen's greatest task of the year was sponsoring the annual Seminary banquet. This year the Seminary banquet was held in the Y. M. C. A. in Minneapolis. This year the Junior Class of the Seminary was the smallest functioning body of the school, consisting of only sever, members. Seven for '47 could be their slogan. Many have felt that they could better serve their Lord in the Armed Services than continuing in school, and plan to return after the war is ever. Due to its size, the class did not sponsor any activities alone but assisted the Middlemen in sponsoring the Seminary banquet. Not only was the class large, but it v as also outstanding in many respects. Its members were engaged in all of the school activities. Although many of the class members were called into the armed forces throughout the course of the year, the ciass continued to carry on in an enthusiastic manner. Several successful parties and shuffleboard and ping-pong tournaments were held during the year. All in all, from freshman week to the last day of school, the freshman class helped make this year at Bethel another successful year. V Thirty TOP PICTURE Fourth Row: Thino Row: Second Row: NcIjm. Realizing the value of the Bible subjects offered in the Christian Worker's Course, twenty-seven students have enrolled in one or more of the classes along with their college curriculum to further their knowledge of His Word. This training endeavors to give the student a more thorough knowledge of the Bible and to better equip him in dealing with the problems of Christian leadership. The training also enables the student to teach Sunday School and Bible School more efficiently. Many have made good use of their practical training during the year by helping in the churches in the Twin Cities. The instructors of the various classes are: Professor A. J. Neon prayer meetings, fellows and girls meeting separately, and a united prayer service after dinner were held each school day. This year the council purchased three tract racks. Two of these were placed in the college and one in the Seminary. The largest undertaking for the Religious Council were the Deeper Life meetings in the fall with Missionary Eric Frykenberg, and in the spring with Dr. John Herrman. V The Missionary Band again this year made a forward step in its missionary program. A goal of $1,000 was set for further support cf Bethel in Jorhat, Assam, India, and for future “Bethels in China and South America. This program has been very well supported by the students. Monthly meetings were held with interesting programs consisting of moving pictures of challenging fields, and talks by visit- v ing missionaries, the highlight being the visit of Rev. Sten Lind-berg, first missionary to go out under our new Conference foreign missions program. Another event of the year was the annual Missionary Day when guest speakers were Dr. Earl L. Riley, Dr. Glenn Tuttle, and Rev. Walfred Danielson. Thirty-six Seated: Miss E. Nelson, Alma Iblings, Arlene Peterson, Mabel Anderson, Virginia Anderson. If you were to enter the reception room of the Girls' Dormitory on the second Thursday of every month at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon, you would be welcomed by the feminine group of Bethel including all College and Seminary girls, teachers and faculty wives. This group is known as the Bethel Women's Association of which Miss E. Nelson is the advisor. Throughout the year the cabinet chairmen consisting of Mabel Anderson, Virginia Anderson, Violet Carlson and Alice Olson, together with their groups, have been responsible for the programs. The object of this organization is to bring all Bethel women together in a closer fellowship with one another and with God. The officers for the past year were: president, Alma Iblings; vice president, Lily Johnson; secretary, Barbara Edson; assistant secretary, Jane Larson; treasurer, Gladys Biller; assistant treasurer, Miriam Nelson. With a group of thirty-eight members, this year's Arian Chorus under the able direction of Professor Neis Stjernstrom, had many successful singing engagements. Besides singing in many of the Twin City churches, the group also sang at the St. Paul Youth For Christ Singspiration, and made a trip out of town to Cambridge. The Arian Chorus, which was organized at Bethel only five years ago, is for the musical training and development of Bethel girls. Officers for this year included: pianist, Ruth Rask; president, Dorothy Dahlman; vice president, Jean Hamlett; secretary, Gretchen Clauson; treasurer, Phyllis Johnson; and librarian, Virginia Peterson. The officers of the group were: president, Lloyd Nordstrom; vice president, David Danielson; secretary, Warren Magnuson; treasurer, William Peterson; and librarian, Clarence Sahlin. A concert given at the First Baptist Church in Minneapolis featured the Male Chorus along with the other Bethel musical groups. We also have had the privilege of hearing this group in chapel programs. Because most of the members of the chorus were student pastors and had other duties, the chorus was not able to sing at any other affairs. Male Quartette The Bethel Male Quartet consisting of David Danielson, Lloyd Nordstrom, William Peterson, and Roger Youngquist, has made itself a popular and well-known group both inside and outside of Bethel. Not only has the quartet taken part in chapel programs. Twin City Church services, and Gospel team work, but it also took a large part in the concert given by the Bethel choral groups at the First Baptist Church in Minneapolis. ...Wai CL omi Quartette Thirty-nine Clarion Staff First Row: E. A subscription drive was launched during Homecoming Week in the fall which also increased the Clarion's circulation. For Homecoming a six-page issue was printed. The first part of the year Mabel Anderson was editor, and her assistant was Carl Applequist. In March Co-Editors Norma Seaquist and Audrey Skarp took up their duties. The business manager for the entire year was William Thompson, and the business advisor was Dean Emery Johnson. i a anon Forty If we as a staff of the forty-five Spire are to claim any publication records, we must boast of speed. The difficulties involved in obtaining material due to wartime restrictions for a time seemed to make publication impossible. Each week end they take up their charges at missions and churches in the Twin City area and outlying towns and rural communities. Some have steady pastorates while others are kept busy supplying pulpits at various places where the need arises. Because of the shortage of pastors due to chaplaincy enlistments, our Seminary students look out upon fields white with harvest but where labourers are few, and are brought face to face with the challenge of a needy world. S)toiclent f aitord Forty-two ■ V v Captain Bob Sandin Although wartime travel made extended trips impossible, although equipment proved difficult to obtain, and although few squad members could report for practice, the Bethel basketball team had an interesting season. As a result, it had a good season with a full schedule. The team made a trip to Cambridge, Minnesota, and also played several games at nearby colleges, but most of the games were played in the college gym. During the fall semester, Betty Danielson acted as coach; Paul Edwards took over in January. The team's captain was Eunice Wood, and Marianne Schouweiler served as manager. First Row: C. Peterson, B. Bethel's diamondmen had, on the whole, a successful year. Six men returned from last year's nine to form the nucleus for one of the finest squads in the history of the sport at Bethel. A standout throughout the season was Captain Clarence Sahlin, whose steady play both in the field and at the plate constantly drew the attention and praise of the fans. 1 Bethel vs. Concordia 8 7 Bethel vs. Luther 6 4 Bethel vs. Augsburg 7 0 Bethel vs. Hamline 1 Forty-eight 1. “When?!!!” 2.
