Text from Pages 1 - 228 of the 1977 volume:

Dear Classmates: Our constant goal while laboring on the 1977 Yearbook was to provide each member of the Senior Class with a true living album of their four years at Bethel High School. It was and is our fondest wish that future readings of the “Wildcat”, whether 10 or 20 or 30 years from today, will rekindle in each and every member of our class a strong sense of being in Bethel High School once more. We hope we have succeeded. Liz Morhardt Douglas Yagaloff Linda Scalici WILDCAT Class of 1977 Bethel High School Bethel, Connecticut Volume Number 34 1 DEDICATION 2 How can we begin to express our gratitude to some- one who has been such an important part of our four years at Bethel High School? Since our Freshman year Mrs. Greene has helped to guide our way to- ward graduation and adulthood. If we ever wanted to talk about a problem, or just have a conversation, she was always willing to listen. If we ever lost confi- dence in ourselves or our work, her encouragement gently pushed us forward. She made us believe in ourselves. What would we have done if she hadn’t constantly reminded us to send in our SAT forms and college applications? Without her presence during these times, our lives would have been more difficult. So, Mrs. Greene, because you believed in us we dedicate the 1977 “Wildcat” to you. 3 OUR ADVISOR 4 When we look back on our four years at Bethel High School there is one person we will always remember: Mr. Janesky. We could not possibly repay him for the generous amount of time and devotion which he has given to us. Every member of our class feels that he is a personal friend. Whether it was a Junior Show meeting, or a Work Day, Mr. Janesky could always be counted on to be there with encouragement and advice. Mr. Janesky was not only our class advisor — he is a friend to all. 5 Each year the Bethel Senior Class dedicates its yearbook to an individual it holds in the highest esteem. The feelings which prompt this honor are not to be underestimated. There are others, however, who the class would also like to recognize or thank in a special way. The three members of the Bethel High School faculty whose photographs appear on the facing page are individuals we feel are deserving of such recognition. 6 Mr. Emmanuel Merullo Mr. Merullo has been Principal of Bethel High School for each of our four years as students. We have come to know him as a proud, firm, friendly, and just man. In a host of visible and invisible ways he has influenced each and every one of us. As we graduate, we take this opportunity to thank him for all he has done for our class. Miss Mary Lou Wallace We thank Miss Wallace for not only the help she gave so willingly to the yearbook staff, but her wonderful and gracious manner of offering that aid. Miss Wallace is responsible for many of the photographs which ap- pear on the following pages; photographs which simply would not have been taken had she not volunteered to do so. Coach John DeMille Despite a sad lack of publicity, it has been a well-known fact amongst Bethel High’s student body that the most successful athletic team over the past year has been the Cross Country Squad. When asked the reason for their success, members of the team invariably and immedi- ately mention the name of Coach John DeMille. With his retirement as Head Coach of the Cross Country Team this year, Bethel loses a unique, hard working able athletic leader. His track leadership and flowery speeches will be sorely missed. 7 During our four years at BHS, we wit- nessed the formation of a host of rela- tionships. There is a certain closeness which develops into a friendship. The constant sharing of feelings while with friends helps to bring us all closer to- gether. During these years we have met many people. Some have become best friends and others have passed by. Per- haps our memories of BHS will center on the companionship we have found with- in its walls. Hopefully, after these four years, our relationships will endure. i 9 Elisa M. Abate Lisa Do you care what's happening around you? Do your senses know the changes when they come? Every minute of the day came alive with the sound of voices teaching, conversing, debating, joking, and laughing. We will miss that time in our lives when we were constantly surrounded by our classmates, when there was always someone to talk to. 88 89 CLASS HISTORY 90 FRESHMAN YEAR Who can forget that first year of high school? We lost ourselves in the maze of corridors and were late to almost every class. After pulling ourselves together with endless float meetings, our class took first prize in the homecoming contest. By June, we were eager and confident, and looked forward to the start of the next year. SOPHOMORE YEAR Sophomore year’s big event was the Ring Dinner. After signing up a Ring Dinner Committee (oh, all those committees!) they worked hard and did a fine job of transforming the BHS cafeteria into a room fine enough for us to be given our brand new rings. The day after, we all came to school flashing aquamarine rings at the freshmen. We finally had a solid symbol of our class’ unity. The year flew by and before we knew it, we were juniors. JUNIOR YEAR Of course, everyone will remember our Junior year. We hosted “Silver Bells,” the Junior Senior Semi-Formal. It was rated a great success and we were complimented from everyone for a job well done. Next came the Junior Show. Taking three months to put together, Walter Lasley and Liz Morhardt had their hands full organizing and subduing the enthusiastic cast. “2002,” the name of the show and also the year of our 25 reunion, was an hysterically funny review of our high school. In May, we had our Junior Prom, staged at the Amber Room. It was a dazzling spectacle with juniors in their slinky gowns and rented tuxedos. The King and Queen were Mark Virgilio and Liz Morhardt. Soon after, we entered our final year with both fear and excitement. SENIOR YEAR Our Senior year was the busiest year of all. It started out with a Work Day in which we raised our treasury considerably. Homecoming was highlighted by our winning in the King and Queen catagory. Our King was Armand Menegay and our Queen was Tracee Sutton. As the year progressed, the events seemed to multiply. The Senior Play, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” followed suit with all of our other activities — it was a huge success. The play was anything but serious, yet the time and effort put in by Walter Lasley and Kathy Vecchia, cast and crew was of the most serious nature. Later in the year, the Senior Prom, the biggest dance of our high school years, turned out to be a fantastic success. Next came Class Night. It was one of the last functions that we, as a class, would attend together. Remember how we laughed about the Superlatives and the Will? How could we forget that night. Finally, graduation day drew closer. We looked with mixed emotions at the thought of leaving high school. As we walked up to the podium, dressed in our maroon and white gowns, we reflected on our lives and realized how much we were going to miss each other. Now, we the Class of 1977 are leaving Bethel High School with the memories and hopes of tomorrow. As we look back, the names and faces may fade, but the memories will stay embedded within these pages. 91 92 Every day at B.H.S. has many parts. Of course, the largest part of the day is spent in the classrooms. However, it is the times spent at lockers, working alone in the library, socializ- ing at lunch, rehearsing for shows, and waiting for the late bus that make the day just a little more interesting. 93 SUPERLATIVES Most Popular Most Courteous Most Fun To Be With Most Sophisticated Most Original Most Romantic Most Likely To Succeed Most Intelligent Most Athletic Most Thoughtful Most Optimistic Most Pessimistic Most Musical Most Artistic Most Talkative Most Mischievous Most Sincere Most Generous Most Ambitious Most Collegiate Most Patient Most Often Seen Least Often Seen Most Feminine Most Masculine Prettiest Handsomest Sexiest Cutest Friendliest Most Dependable Most Cooperative Most Admired Most Gullible Best Natured Best Personality Best Smile Best Dresser Best Hair Best Body Best Eyes Best Nose Best Driver Worst Driver Best Legs Best Laugh Best Sport Best Dancer Best Singer Easiest To Rattle Hardest To Rattle Neatest Shyest Noisiest Class Gossip Quietest Done Most For Class Done Most For School Bookworm Busiest Laziest Class Tease Class Flirt Class Clown Class Giggler Class Blusher First To Marry GIRL Denise Deleo Vesta Williams Liz Morhardt Linda Scalici Lori Breese Erin McCollam Grace Hafner Ingrid Hanlon Pam Tarrant Anne Marie Sullivan Maureen Shannon Toni Friedman Sara Strother Cecila Sack Toni Friedman Michele Mattola Mary Satumo Kathy Vecchia Karen Epple Greig Lu Lisa Grennie Liz Morhardt Kathy Zowine Evelyn Thomas Toni Friedman Anita Crowell Kathy Gaboardi Maureen Shannon Denise Deleo Evelyn Thomas Denise Deleo Janice Uzwiak Anne Marie Sullivan Liz Morhardt Karen Ragonesi Karen Epple Annette Moreno Tracy Collins Anne Marie Sullivan Grace Brum Erin McCollam Mary Ellen Grosshart Tracy Sutton Annette Moreno Pam Tarrant Tracy Sutton Vesta Williams Sharon Steiger Vesta Williams Karen Epple Barbara Piskura Karen Ragonesi Toni Friedman Barbara Piskura Denise Deleo Mari Lou Barlow Ingrid Hanlon Kathy Vecchia Sandy Bellantoni Tracy Sutton Tracy Sutton Liz Morhardt Tina Hesse Joan Sandstrom Gerri Druker BOY Armand Menegay Mark Cahill Sandy Cody Harold Paris Harold Paris Chuck Cundari Jason Beckwith Bill Shogren Jeff Cartin Gerry Biasi Mike Koprowski Jason Beckwith Jeff Russack Dave Gesualdi Jerry Izzo Gary Smerkanicz Dom Dirco Mark Cahill Tony Uzwiak Bill Shogren Walt Lasley Rick Watson Jim Derbyshire Rick Watson Armand Menegay Jim Marcucilli Tony Uzwiak Gerry Biasi Walt Lasley Walt Lasley Jeff Cartin Tom Dixon Gerry Biasi Armand Menegay Mike Rodreguiz Sandy Cody Jim Marcucilli Scott MacDonald Merrill Merritt Mike Koprowski Ernie Liberatore Ken Parsons Scott MacDonald Mark Virgilio Sandy Cody Jerry Izzo Keith Perschino Craig Holleran Gerry Biasi Ernie Liberatore Charlie Peterson Reed Boulliane Jerry Izzo Dana Hale Jerry Izzo Doug Yagaloff Tom Dixon Doug Yagaloff Kevin Henry Gary Tomaino Tony Uzwiak Mark Virgilio Mark Virgilio Scott MacDonald Jay Whitlock f 95 VICTORY AND DEFEAT Scoring a touchdown in the last three seconds of a game — Bethel is victorious! A last second jump shot — and the Wildcats are defeated. The sheer joy of participating in and watching sports binds each member of the school into one unit. Whether we are actually on the team or watching from the stands, a sense of excitement is felt by all. We shout together, we cheer to- gether, and sometimes we cry together. When it is all over — whether we emerge victorious or vanquished — we leave as one. — 97 M. Shannon. Mrs. Leonard. T. Sutton. CHEERLEADERS Few people watching a well-drilled cheer- leading squad ever realize the amount of time and work involved in coordinating a cheer. While they may be impressed by the final outcome of a cheer, they are not aware of the precision, timing, and most of all, stamina required of all cheerleaders. Cheers with elaborate mounts must be perfectly balanced or the result could be disasterous. This year, the Varsity and JV cheerleaders were among the best ever to participate at BHS. The Varsity squad, led by excellent Captain Tracee Sutton and Co-captain Maureen Shannon performed a series of very intricate cheers which incorporated mounts as high as 15 feet. The JV squad under the able leadership of Linda Gillett, Captain and Leonora Priolo, Co-captain performed their series of cheers with preci- sion. Continued interest and high standards have enabled the cheerleaders of BHS to excel. We look forward to even bigger and better things in the years to come. On August 2-5, 1976, the Varsity Cheerleading Squad of BHS attended a Cheerleading Clinic at Fairfield U. sponsored by the National Cheerleaders Association. During the four days of learning and competition, our team captured more and higher awards than any other squad in attendance. The team was awarded two superior ribbons (the highest given) and one excellent ribbon (the second highest). The Bethelites also won a Spirit Stick which was awarded to the top four squads and was based on spirit and attitude. The highlight was when Bethel was awarded the NCA’s Award of Excellence, the top award given to the best all-around squad at each of the summer clinics. Bethel was selected by the clinic instructors over 20 other squads in atten- dance. As a result, their photograph will appear in “The Megaphone Magazine’’ along with other win- 100 ners throughout the nation. Ann Marie Sullivan 101 Back Row: T. Parsons, K. Martin, C. Clarke, L. There was always excitement to be found on Friday nights or Saturday afternoons during the autumn when the Bethel Wildcats took to the field. Co-captains Rick Watson and Jeff Cartin led the team under the able guidance of Coaches DeSantis, Hunt, and Grabowski. Senior standouts on the 1976 Wildcat Eleven were Kevin Lorette, Reed Boullianne, and Mike Matta who were awarded WCC Conference Team honorable mention and Armand Menegay, Gary Tomaino, Rick Watson and Jeff Cartin who were chosen as members of the All Conference Team. Other capable seniors were Tom Lengel, Ken Parsons, Miller Moses, Tom Dixon, Sandy Cody, Dom DiRico, and Ernie Liberatore. 104 Standing: Coach Mark Goodwin, B. Uzwiak, B. Zuvich, C. Haig, L. Undefeated in dual meet competition for the past three years, the team has compiled a record of 39 wins and 0 losses. The maroon and white easily ran over the league and completely dominated the state sectionals. The Wildcat team then went on to win the Class M State Championship. Soon after, they took second in the State Open. These records were due mainly to much hard work and dedication to a sport almost unmatched anywhere. The pack was led by junior Pat Wild, who was undefeated in dual meet competition and held the course record on almost every course he ran. Tony Uzwiak was also undefeated in dual meet competition. Walter Lasley was their very capable Captain. Sophomore Dave Burke was the surprise of the year as he came from behind when needed. Gerry Biasi and Merrill Merritt were plagued with injuries yet were still invaluable to the team effort. Mark Braun, Mark Cahill, and Bob Hall fought it out between themselves through the year. Larry Myers rounded off the Varsity team. 106 1 w CROSS COUNTRY 107 Left to right: M. Merritt, W. Lasley, P. Wild, T. Uzwiak, Coach DeMille, G. Biasi, B. Hall. First Row: F. Musser, N. The Wildcat soccer team was the surprise of the fall season. Under the guidance of coaches Fran Selleck and Walter Hartsburg, and in their first year of varsity play, the team qualified for the state tournament. The young team was led by tri-captains senior Lewis Gamarra and juniors Mike McKormick and Dana Thorton. Gamarra and McKormick were also the team’s high scorers. Bethel offensive was led by senior John Hennessey, while the defense was led by Mark Butcher. Mike McKormick and Frank Musser were selected for the WCC All Star Team. The highlight of the season was the Wildcats holding league leading Weston to a 1-1 tie. Bethel ended the season with six win, five loss, and three tie record. Each game was fought unceasingly, with our team never admit- ting defeat until the final whistle sounded, signall- ing an end to the contest. Senior members of the 1976-1977 squad were Tracee Collins, Karen Court way, Pam Tarrant, Jan Uzwiak, Roxanne Gunzy, Denise DeLeo, Diane Heller, and Mari- Lou Barlow, Manager. 113 SPIRIT Mr. Merullo has stated many times that the members of BHS are like a family. With this family idea, we have developed a certain pride and spirit in our school. Each one of us has become very attached to everything it represents. In any type of competition or event, our spirit has shown through. 114 115 116 First Row: K. Toombs, J. Hennessey, A. Boucher, T. Lengel, M. Matta, M. Priest, M. Rodriquez, D. DePace. Although they suffered through a losing season, the Ice Hockey Team was stronger this year than in the past. As a result of injuries which benched valuable players, they were unable to reach the high scores usually necessary to win. The result was a series of 2-1 or 3-2 defeats. The team, consisting of Seniors Alan Boucher, John Hen- nessey, Rebel Kidd, Tom Lengel, Mike Matta, Mike Priest, and Mike Rodriguez, and Juniors Ken Liberatore and Jeff Rockwell, never stopped fighting for a win. They demonstrated a spirit characteristic of the teams guided by Coach Fred Murkland. Basketball has always been a popular sport for girls as evidenced by the number of girls who “try out” for the team each year. Under the guidance of Miss Carol Robert- son, the girls had a very rewarding 1976-1977 season. The Varsity Team was led by Co-Captain Pam Tarrant and Junior Sue Grazioli. The team’s high scorer was Erin McCollam with a 9.2 point average per game. Members of the team include Senior Karen Courtway and Juniors Lynn Pierrie, Sue Traficanti, and Jennifer Gould. The JV Team had an overall good record of 8-9. Out- standing performances were contributed by Co-Captains Mary Jean Hall and Sue Grosshart. Wildcat ‘1977’ wishes the team the best of luck in future years. 118 First Row. Flo Saracelli, K. Oberhammer, E. Connor, R. Miller, L. Law, M. Clarke, S. Davis, K. LeSage, C. Dorn, B. Tri-Captain Allen Ramos had an impressive average of 20.9 points per game and a total of 419 points, which is the second highest in the WCC. Support came from Scott MacDonald, plagued with knee injuries, and Jay Whitlock. Strong assistance came from juniors Jim Kenning, John Marcucilli, John Wolk, Lou Santo, Dave Robinet, and George Gaylord. Although we planned the floats, posters, and bulletin boards for months in advance, the week before Homecoming was always filled with frantic efforts to finish our projects. Remember the hairdryers, the spilled paint, and the questions concerning who really broke the door at Barlow’s and where did the supplies really come from? The festive day came all too soon. Cheerleaders did their cheers, the football players warmed up on the field, and the crowd became excited with anticipation. The moment of truth came at half- time when Mr. Murkland announced the winners. Following the excitement of the day came our victory dance to conclude the celebra- tion. This event was one of the highlights of our past four years. 124 125 HOMECOMING A. Uzwiak R. Pond With the help of each member, the Indoor Track Team had a strong season. The long hours spent training were well spent as was evident by their fine performances. In the high jump, transfer student Dave Dutke set a new record at 6'0 and Tony Uzwiak set a new WCC record in the 1,000 yard dash. Both of these members, along with hurdler Bob Pond, represented BHS in the State Championships. T. Emrich T. Uzwiak 127 Does a teacher's day end at 2:06 P.M.? To some students it may seem so but after a little observa- tion one can see that teachers put forth their efforts at all times during the day, before and after school. Getting up in front of a class and teaching requires great preparation. Teachers must make themselves completely familiar withothe day’s lesson. Many faculty members are working toward higher de- grees and spend much of their time studying and learning more about their fields. All of Bethel High’s faculty has earned the respect and apprecia- tion of the Class of ’77. 128 PREPARATION AND STUDY 129 BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION For each of our four years at B.H.S. Mr. Merullo and Mr. Forster have led our school with competence and authority. As our principal, Mr. Merullo had displayed both wisdom and understanding in dealing with the problems that inevita- bly arise during a school year. He has been not only our advisor, but also a personable and strong source of school spirit during our four years. Mr. Forster has had the tough task of having to discipline the students in B.H.S. Although sometimes we do not under- stand his actions, we realize that he has our best interests in mind. He has been a loyal friend to each member of our class. When we look back at our high school years, we will always remember Mr. Merullo and Mr. Forster with fond and grate- ful thoughts. 130 Frank C. We loved every minute of it. 149 150 FASHION SHOW “Lollipops to Roses” was the sixth annual BHS fashion show. Each individual worked many hours to prepare the outfit of her choice. Finally, on January 19, the girls modeled their creations. The evening was a spectacular event. Many thanks go to Miss Brown for all of her time and devotion. 151 Each year, the Bethel AFS chapter hosts a student from a foreign country. This year the student was Midori Kuroiwa from Japan. The club, under the leadership of Mrs. Rose- mary Pardalis, was very successful this year. First, they sold Wildcat pins throughout the school. With the help of the Adult Chapter, they sold citrus fruit from Florida. The pro- ceeds went toward sending a student from Bethel to another country. This year, AFS was lucky enough to have two short term exchanges. Four students went to Mississippi and ten students went to Buffalo, New York. The officers of the club were Lisa Drucker, President, Lisa Grennie, Vice-President, Mark Virgilio, Treasurer, and Kathy Vecchia, Secretary. Bottom Row: Lisa Druker, Midori Kuroiwa, Lisa Grcnnie. When we first started over a year ago, the blind anticipation led us to believe that work on the Wildcat would be filled with fun and enjoyment, but now, in reflection, we know the frustration and discouragement that goes into producing this kind of book. It has become apparent to us that without the help and guidance of Mr. Loren Euvrard and Mr. Michael Pellegrino this yearbook would not exist. They sacrificed many hours of each day, and were always there when we needed them. We have thanked them many times, but we would like to take this opportunity to thank them again for their patience and understanding. THANK YOU!!! Literary Chairman — Caryl Kirschbaum. TROUPE Troupe is Bethel High’s theater club. It presents two productions each year. Under the direction of Mrs. Yolanda Loughran, Troupe enjoyed a very successful 1976-77 season. In November, they presented “You Can’t Take It With You’’, a comedy about a strange but easygoing family in the 1930’s. The Spring play, “A Thurber Carnival’’, is a collection of James Thurber’s short stories. School is no exception. We have all felt the joy of finally under- standing that algebra, or of getting a 95 on an English test, or of passing biology. Still, all of us have done our share of clock watching and catching up on sleep. 174 176 177 HOMEROOM 223. First Row: R. Kimball, G. Adkins, C. Caffcry, G. Leroux. Second Row: R. Kugler, S. The trucks and the doll clothes Cowboys, Indians, bows and arrows. Teddy Bears to first grade Childhood memories never fade. Blue for boys and pink for girls Water guns, Halloween and all those Banana curls. Birthdays were days filled with fun We’d play pin the tail and hide and seek Until our special day was done. We were curious, mischievous We laughed and we cried and we never understood about Grandpa Who died. First Row: K. Kratky, R. Esselman, D. Clement, L. Breese, Moved. Second Row: J. Katz, G. It was that time in our life when we Hated our name. But those years brought us days of Junior High As we thankfully bid elementary school Goodbye, While our parents were making sure That their hearts were strong For the struggle of adolescence, Said to be long. Blue jeans and sneakers Official dress for school. Unless you were just one of the uncool. Monica said Jerry told Karen that Terry told Bonnie that Linda loves Ronnie. And so went those teeny boppin’ maturity poppin’ years. 214 215 First Row: P. Villane, L. Schaffer, K. Gaboardi, C. Didato, Moved. Second Row: K. Licursi, D. Sadler, D. Finn, K. Lorreltc, K. Holt, Mr. Boyle. 216 The new years of High School quickly Approached. We didn’t want to go, We had to be coaxed. Initiation, accusations Tantalizing conversations. Floats and dances — our first real Romances. Remember freshman humiliation? Class rings, queens and kings Biology, Geometry, U.S. History Trigonometry. There was the library, the cafe, Remember all the times we’d laugh. School lunches, cross country runs, How about the Cheerleaders all in bunches Football, basketball — transfers from Other schools, hoping they’d be Tall. And finally Maturation, full formation Last but not least Graduation. Toni Friedman 217 Our memories of Bethel are as varied as the individuals in the Class of 1977. There are the memories of the Volunteer Fire Department we wondered about, the police we came to know so well, the library with its worn and limited number of texts, the streets winding like medieval cowpaths through woods and new developments, and the ancient schools which threaten soon to become priceless an- tiques. Of course our fondest memories will be reserved for the wonderful men and women we came to know in our early years in Bethel. While many of us may soon leave this town their faces, words and antics will be recalled and treasured by each of us in the future years of our lives. 218 « 219 avs rr.v CCA zf. w • . fV,wv Z V .'Vi 'V ✓ ..
