BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL BETHEL, CONN. 1)6801 What is yesterday if we can never say Remember when? When we leave after graduation, we will be leaving many days and weeks behind us, all filled with memories. These are memories of friendship and laughter seasoned with the sadness and with the knowledge that each of us has grown in numerous ways. As the days and weeks rapidly become the past, we look hack on our days as high school students and we will remember. Our memories will he those of People, the people we knew as our friends. They have made an everlasting imprint on our lives. They have helped to mold us into what we are now and what we will become. They will be as much a part of our future as they were in the past and as they are in the present. Never will we be able to entirely forget our deepest friendships; as an aid to memory, we, the Class of 1973, dedicate our yearbook to the beauty of friendship and to the beautiful people we know as our friends. 2 DEDICATION and is found at I A unexpected times. Jf f It may begin the moment that we first share our thoughts with another... or find a helping hand or laugh together. FRIENDSHIP IS A SPECIAL FEELING 4 The more friends that we have, the fuller our lives become. As we progress we learn and play together and all the We begin school, small and uncertain of while we acquire new and fulfilling friendships, what is expected of us. We become older and more accustomed to the routine of education. And eventually combine the school and the family to form the basis of our social existence. We begin switching classes, and see our friends more often. High School, however, is not only measured by goodtimes, hut by learning. And the moments away from the classroom when friendships are cemented... ... away from the classroom where personal considerations replace the objective study of math, history, science, etc. 7 for the rest of our lives. 8 MAS CHA TABLE OF CONTENTS ADVERTISEMENTS Page 177 SENIORS..............Page 10 SPECIALTIES..........Page 74 FACULTY SPORTS ACTIVITIES .Page 160 Page 106 Page 140 ' -r UNDERCLASSMEN ........ Graduation. Yearbook. 73 OUR FOUR YEARS AS B.H.S. STUDENTS In September, 1969, we crossed the threshold from eighth grade to ninth, to become “sophisticated” high schoolers at last. Following the easiest Freshman Initiation ever, we established ourselves as the number one class in B.H.S. by winning first prize for our homecoming float. Not only that, but our class won first prize for creating the loudest uproar at the Homecoming assembly! Our class soon learned the way around the labyrinths of B.H.S. Who could forget the trips back and forth to the Methodist Church in the rain and snow? We suffered through monotonous study halls and a crowded, dingy cafeteria. We ninth graders often did ‘‘time” in Mr. Blum's detention room. And some of us were at the memorable occasion when Mr. Larsen got his foot stuck in the wastebasket. We stuffed anything and everything into our little half-lockers, and constantly heard Mr. Anjiras saying “Take Off!’’. During our Freshman year, a big transition was made. We left one high school for another. Who could forget moving day? 74 In the new high school we attended a memorable teach-in, and witnessed the first student strike ever at B.H.S. Mrs. Fesh, our advisor, left us at the end of our Freshman year and Miss Brown became the new advisor of the Class of 1973. As we became Sophomores we adjusted to the traditions of Bethel High. At Home- coming our banner, a first prize winner, stomped all over the entries of the other classes. Our float was again a prize winning effort, as we took second place for our B.H.S. ship sailing to victory. During our Sophomore year we became accustomed to a new idea—unstructured periods rather than study halls. We learned of all the nooks and crannies in the new school We survived World History and tramped around many days with soggy shoes, a result of biology “field and stream trips . Our class worried about building up a substantial treasury, and held many after school meetings to plan fund raising activities. The biggest event of our Sophomore year was the annual ring dinner. We proudly- received our glittering rings with bright aquamarine stones at a very hectic spaghetti dinner. (“Wait! My initials aren't B.H.S.!!”) The dinner was prepared by members of our class and several hard-working freshman girls. A t the end of the year we acquired a new class advisor, Mrs. Manion. Her generosity and willingness to help impressed us from the very start. 75 Vr e entered our Junior year with the knowledge that we had much to look forward to. For Homecoming we put much effort and originality into our float and banner, but someone had to lose, and guess who did? Soon after Homecoming, our class sponsored the annual Junior-Senior Semi-Formal With “Imagine” as a theme, the dance was a success and we enjoyed being hosts to the seniors. Next on our busy calendar was the Junior Variety Show. “I Can't Believe I’m Gonna' See The Whole Thing”, was quite an appropiate name! During that last frenzied week before opening night, we put everything together and were pleasantly surprised at the results. Some memorable scenes were the Mannequins, Mother Nature, and of course, Paulette the Stripper. The show was something we had always looked forward to, and during its production we had a chance to learn more about each other. Junior year was the time of the chemistry blues for many of us, also it was the first year that we had the opportunity to choose our own English courses. Soon the P.S.A.T.s and the S.A.T.s were staring us in the face. We filled in millions of dots with our number two pencils on our computer cards. Our full and rewarding Junior year ended splendidly with our Junior Prom. The theme “Long Ago Tomorrow , was carried out through the beautiful decorations and even some of the outfits. This successful dance made a pleasant close to a busy and exciting year. . 4 t the start of our senior year we impressed the freshmen with the fact of their inferiority during a cream-filled initiation. Soon after came Homecoming, where we again proved our creative ability by capturing first prize for our float depicting the many B.H.S. sports. Mr. Kidd, who unselfishly donated much time and effort to assist us, deserves our most heartful gratitude. Work was started on our yearbook, senior portraits were taken, and measurements were taken for our caps and gowns. The Future presented itself to us in the form of college applications, S.A. T.s and the search for a vocation. Our class became 'penny-pinching' as we became concerned with the building up of our treasury for such expenses as the yearbook, our Senior Prom, and of course. Class Night. The semi-formal, held in December and sponsored by the Class of 1974, had the theme “White Christmas . This time it was our turn to he the guests. Even as some people were just taking down their xmas trees, we were pulling out props and costumes for our Senior Play “Take Her, She's Mine, ” which was presented in January and turned out to be very successful The production, directed by Mr. Hartshurg was skillfully presented by a group of creative seniors and brought in much needed money to our treasury. Spring arrived, and with it plans for the Senior Prom and Class Night. The school year began to draw rapidly to a close. With graduation, our high school days will he gone, but not forgotten. Our four years at Bethel High were only a short time in our lives, but the imprint that they have made will remain with us always. League Meet and the Nonnowaug Invitational Meet for the third year in a row and placed fifth in the Class M State Meet. iW We. the staff of Wildcat ‘73’ dedicate this page to Dave Tierney for his out- standing accomplishments in cross country and track. In Dave’s junior year he ran 2.040 miles, and in doing so, broke nine course records. He was state class “S” Champion and finished third in the state open. It was a great year for Dave but in his Senior year he topped those nine records that he had set a year ago. He also, in his Senior year, finished second in the state class “B” race and fourth in the State Open. Dave set the record here in Bethel at 13.02 minutes for the two mile race. His Senior year goal is to set a new state record in the same event. VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY Left to right: 1st row: M. Schork. C. Page. K. Strohm. N. Faust, C. Chap- man. 2nd row: Miss Robertson, N. Two black eyes, numerous bruises, and lots of sore shins later, they achieved a final record of 3 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. As a relatively young and new team, they played well under the coaching of Miss Carol Robertson. The team ended up tied for fourth place in their league. VARSITY CAPTAINS Field Hockey is a sport of great teamwork and physical endurance. Knowing this. Miss Robertson has worked un- selfishly towards getting the team ready for the games. She’s not only a great help on the field but also someone we can turn to as a friend. Frank Kovacs Bob Piorkowski Dave Smith The 1972 WILDC ATS, although their record fell below that of the previous season, had a fairly successful year marked by moments which were both beautiful and excit- ing. One of the season’s high points was the game with Immaculate High, one of our newer rivals. Bethel defeated Immaculate 42-20 in a contest which saw ALL AREA Senior Don Buttendorf, scoring three times with the help of Senior linemen Pete Sanford. Bob Matta, Pete Francis, Jim Thommen, and Bob Piorkowski. The week after the triumph over Immaculate, Bethel defeated New Milford 27-0. The Green Wave of New Milford was unable to score against a defense which included, among others. Frank Kovacs, ALL AREA and ALL CONFERENCE Tackle Jim Thommen. John Hruch, Pete Francis, Tom Ryan, and Kevin Ely. Other standouts during the long season were ALL AREA and ALL CONFERENCE Juniors, Greg Greene and Dave Pomfret. Victory also came to Bethel in the mud of Brookfield. Football, to the Senior players, is a truly beautiful sport, a test of a man’s brawn, brain, and agility. But we have turned out, to the best of our ability, what we think is representative of our class. We hope that the efforts of the Wildcat Staff will be appreciated, considering the long hours of hard work that was put into it. We would like to thank all of our friends who helped us to make it a success. We would especially like to thank Mr. Pelligrino who pulled us through many a tight spot. I remember a crowded yellow bus and many new faces to me. I remember Marietta introducing me to many students: This is Lucy from Italy ... she doesn’t understand very well ... speak slowly ... ! Yes, that was my first day in B.H.S. where I was going to live a great part of my “American experience”. Pretty soon I got used to many things that were different from my Italian school, such as teachers speaking English instead of Italian: That’s a very important thing if you don’t know a word of English! Or moreover, the fact of changing rooms every period, (in Italy it is the teacher who changes rooms) and I couldn’t get those classrooms and halls straight. I kept getting lost. It seems to me it was just yesterday when I started to learn Field Hockey with Miss Robertson ... when I got a black eye in the last game ... or when we played volleyball with Mrs. Dec., because the time went by very fast, too fast. It is already time for me to leave Bethel. My Special “thank-you” is for all the Seniors, I will never forget the time that we spent together in so many school activities. It was useful for me not just to learn English, but also to understand other people’s point of view, to find new friends. What else may I say if not “Ciao a tutti!” Bye, bye to all of you. I hope in the future when you think of your Senior year in High School, you will remember me, as one of your friends.” 152 “Connecticut is on the ocean, north front New York”. Do you know where it is now? When I got the first letter from my new American parents I had never really heard about Connecticut, no less Bethel. I had wanted so much to go somewhere in the south or to California where most of my friends went. “You are the silly one who is going to Connecticut!” Yes I was going to meet a new life somewhere in America. I was going to learn English. I was very scared. 1 left my family, my friends, and my house far behind. Now I am in Bethel and I’ve been here more than seven months. I am now part of your life. I am a Senior in Bethel High School, and 1 am proud of that. I like Bethel, my American parents, and all the friends that I have here. I will never forget this year spent in Bethel. Our long times spent at Roger’s Park skating, the day when I went with Michelle and John to the Neil Young Concert, and of course, our Senior float, and also the many basketball and football games. In the followkng months I would like to see as much as I can. The only feeling that I can tell you is that everybody should try to be an exchange student because it is one of the greatest experiences a person can ever have. And you know always reminds me of you? ... “Come on guys, let’s go to Friendlys”. Lidija Patty Murkland, Sue Mott, and Lidija Lukic with her hamburger. He is the chief educator, administrator, disciplinarian, counselor and even cheer- leader for an entire school community.
