Ow : WE, THE SENIOR CLASS OF BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATE THIS, THE 1972 YEAR- BOOK; TO THE FUTURE Today is the beginning of tomorrow. It is a stairstep in time upon which each of us tread in the seemingly endless journey of life. The memories of Bethel High School and the last four years of our lives will certainly be among the best of our remembrances, but they must be pushed to the back of our minds to make room for the present. We are ready now, to leave these halls and face the future. We are all individuals, and we strive to be ourselves, but in our lives we all have one thing in common. We will strive to discover new horizons, and learn to depend, not on the past, not on the present, but on that unpredicta- ble force ... the future. 2 THE BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL enthusiasm, (and a big mouth)... graceful coordination??? ... contemplating suicide ... Our visions of greatness were abruptly crashed however by an overwhelming mass, called upperclass- men. Three weeks of torture were capped off by the messiest and most disastrous Freshman Reception that Bethel has ever known. We lived through it however and now nothing could stop us. Nineteen sixty-nine saw us as hot-shot sophomores. Homecoming, a carwash, a cake sale, and more dances were included in our money-making schemes. Our big project was to design a class ring, to be received amidst the spaghetti of a Sophomore Ring Dinner. 34 Our Junior Year ushered in many cherished moments. An un-wild wild cat won third place in Homecoming ... but that was better than our previous efforts. Now we moved on to the Junior-Senior Semi-Formal. Whether the dance itself or the party afterwards was more memorable remains to be seen. Next was our acting debut in the Junior Show. Among the stars were a fag in a TV show, a presidential imposter, a dirty old man and four little girls in ankle socks. We appropriately called it We really tried!!! Our Junior Prom was a beautiful way to end the year. That fall we re-entered Bethel High as the almighty Seniors. We started off the year on a winning note by winning the Homecoming event. Imagine that!!!! Now it was our turn to get the freshmen. Rules and regulations prohibited eggs and whip cream and good stuff like that. Lucky for them! The year passed slowly and now work is going full blast and our Senior Play, Damn Yankees, Bethel's first musical. Soon we will be looking forward to our Senior Prom at Chatham Oaks, Class night and of course, Graduation exercises. We've come a long way. We've had good times and we've had bad. But now it's time to go our separate ways, and it's memories like these that will always remain special when Bethel High School is mentioned. 35 MICHAEL T. FOOTBALL '72 The football season began with high hopes for the Wildcats achieving their first WCC championship and a possible undefeated record. Bethel sailed along smoothly with its first win ever over Newtown and consecutive victories over Central Catholic, Immaculate, and New Milford. In the fifth week the un- defeated season was halted by a close 20-18 loss to Joel Barlow. The Wildcats rebounded the next week with a great win over Weston, but on the last day of the season they saw the league title slip away in a stunning loss to Masuk. There were many outstanding individual efforts throughout the season, which makes it impossible to mention all of the names. Let it suffice to say that all of the players had a part in the successful outcome of the season. One must continually push oneself beyond the painful protests of his mind and body in order to achieve his goal. How well a runner conquers this pain and exhaustion will determine the success of his team. The value of this hard work was exemplified perfectly by this year's Bethel Cross Country Team which ran its way to an undefeated season that was highlighted by a State Championship. f HIGH PIONS 1971 KTATi: VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Front row: Tim Burke, Paul Cleary, Art Terry, Rich Zuvich, Jeff Franz. BASKETBALL With six varsity Iettermen returning, the basketball team an- xiously awaited the start of the 1971-72 season. There were expec- tations for a WCC championship, and even talk of a drive to the state title. Though these hopes weren't realized the season was still a major success. The team's 17-5 record was the best in well over a decade. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the thrilling first-ever win over Immaculate. Nearly 1000 people packed the wildcat gym to watch the Bethel squad play their finest game of the season. Managers: Ed Cavallo, Bob Haas, Barry Connell J. V. Those who play know differently. Tennis is a hard, hot and often times frustrating game. The players must have both physical endurance and coordina- tion to win. But perhaps more important than all this a good player must have the mental capability to cope with the pressures this game involves. Jill Reedy 129 CANDIDS Dave Taylor Editor The 1972 yearbook staff in many ways mirrored past committees at Bethel High School. There were the many who enthusiastically vowed to work hard. There were the multitudes willing to give advice, and there were the very few who sacrificed hours of time to labor over the pages of the yearbook. Among these few it seems appropriate to single out three as deserving of the highest praise, Dave Taylor, Kathy Martel, Lynn Kellogg. They were the people primarily responsible for taking 192 blank sheets of paper and molding them into a record of an experience which will be recalled again and again by the one hundred and fifty members of the Class of 1972. Glenda Price points to home. Sunrise on a warm winter's day. I wake and look around me and I think. This is the day I leave for America! What shall I take, what shall I leave? Over there it is summer. Where are my summer clothes? Hurry! There's only an hour to go. Now the plane is down: Hawaii, San Francisco, Chicago, New York. At last I am here. Is this really America? It must be. The cars are on the right of the road; I hear strange, unfamiliar accents around me. Now I am in a strange bus, travelling to meet strange people: my new family and community. What if they don't like me? What if I don't like them? There's a whole year to go. All these fears, all these nervous tensions, they all seem so long ago now. The strange town I came into has become a friend. Names and faces which were just so many shapeless blurs, have become clear. I belong. I am now a person of my own, living where I know I am welcome. Sometimes, hearing of America only through the news of major events, we do not think of Americans as normal people, leading normal lives. On television we see movie stars, and millionaires and wonder — where are the people? Are they all as rich? I wondered this myself before I came here. Now, having lived here for almost a year, I can see how distorted a view it is. True, some Americans do lead a life of luxury, but most are just people, striving upwards. Living here, I have seen things I have never seen before. I have done things I have never done before. I have witnessed a New England fall, and seen the snow in winter. I have seen Halloween and had turkey on Thanksgiving. None of these have I had before. These everyday events you take for granted, to a visitor's eyes can be so beautiful and fascinating. Sometimes it seems unreal. At this time, as the year is almost over, I can look over the past months and think — it was worth it. What I have gained here I shall never forget, the friends I have gained, and the experiences I have shared. I came as a stranger, I leave as a friend. A. F. S.
