EVSIIS Question: What is an enigma, Bill? a license plate ...? a question ...? a riddle ...? a life ...? An enigma bears a hidden meaning Perplexing, mysterious Was that you, Bill? or Were you as we saw you droll perceptive articulate intellectual sagacious A world traveler A committed teacher A discerning friend Traveler, teacher, friend Ah, Bill, you were not an enigma ... not to us ... Only to yourself. Found alone ... All alone Why, Bill? Answer: I do not know ... I do not know myself as I would Will To know myself. I am my own enigma Myself alone As mysterious, as perplexing As a Rubic cube As puzzling, as complex As a pharoah’s tomb ... I have walked the wide fields of earth. I have searched the hidden corridors of the mind I have sailed the blue heart of the ocean. I have touched the source of life ... Through teaching. For intolerance I have returned tolerance Anger, frustration, tenseness, sarcasm Rudeness, intolerance ... all These I have known. Yet, I remain a classroom teacher An honorable vocation — Of all vocations the most honorable — Instituted among men For the instruction of future generations I pass the torch ... I leave peacefully ... gracefully ... Bill ... did you wrap the drapery of your couch about you ... and lie down to pleasant dreams? Anger I have known and returned calmness Yes ... Frustration I have known and returned patience Tenseness I have known and returned regard For rudeness I have returned courtesy c. 1987 For my friend, Barbara Freeze Sturgis 30 FACULTY Despite appearances, this paper is fascinating. “Please hold your question until I have finished explaining,” says Mrs. Palmer. During the past three years at Bethel, the Class of “88” has realized that we as individuals have grown through the teachings thus far acquired from the faculty as well as our peers. We would like to thank each and everyone who has helped us to earn these achievements. The Class of “88” has proven to be very productive in a great deal of its endeavors. The class theme “Friends Together ... Friends Forever ... The Class of “88” , is a good representation of the sense to togetherness felt by our classmates. This characteristics has been a great asset and will prove to be very valuable in the future. GOOD LUCK TO THE CLASS OF 1988!!!! Chemene Pope WjW 4 STACY D. ADDISON OTIS I. After being soundly surprised by Ferguson, the Bruins, over the course of the season, won 5 games and lost 3 by a total of 10 points. We also dropped a hard fought but debatable 42-21 game to Phoebus. Kent Johnson passed for over 220 yards in the second half to rally the Bruins in their Homecoming victory quest. The team saves its best for last as they soundly thrashed the Hampton Crabbers 16-0. The 9 prior opponents could only muster 26 points combined versus the “Crabs”. The defense held their potent offense to only 3 first downs and less than 100 total offense — a true credit to the total team effort. The following Seniors depart Bethel but their many contributions for excitement will be remembered: Kent Johnson (QB), William Perkins (WR), Anthon Wooden (WR-KR), Mario Grimes (DHB), Michael Dula (DHB), Billy Allen (FB), Otis Adkins (DL), P.J. Wortham (DE), Lonnie Jones (LB-OT), Donald Day (C), James Smith (OG-DT), Greg Marshall (C), Gilbert Ramirez (DL), Cleveland Smith (TE), and Anthony Phillips (DE). Three players made the first team All Peninsula District: Anthony Wooden as Punt Returner, James Smithes an offensive guard, and Lonnie Jones as a LB. Lenny Bryd was selected as a LB for the Peninsula Sports Club Team and Wooden was named first team All Eastern Region as a kick returner. Although not earning All District Honors, Kent Johnson was the first Bruin QB to pass for over a 1000 yards in one season. The “Tri-Towers,” Bobby Swadley, Corey Stewart, and Chris Jackson, provided an awesome inside game. Although tall, the Bruins were young, starting four sopho¬ mores: Peter Barner, Troy Fullwood, Corey Stewart, and Craig Rainey. Seniors in the lineup were Manford Mooney, Ronald Berry, Kennedy Bland, and Bobby Swadley. The highlight of the 1987-1988 season was the tournament trip to Tallahassee, Florida. The Bethel Varsity Boy’s Basketball Team raised over $7,000 to fly to Tallahassee, Florida, December 25-31, for the 38th Annual Governor’s Cup Tournament. Sixteen teams from all over the South, New York, and Kentucky con¬ tributed stiff competition. The Bruins placed fourth of 16 teams bringing home a trophy to Bethel. In the first round Bethel defeated Andalusia, Alabama with All-American Robert Horry, and in the second round, Florida High of Tallahassee. This put the Bruins in the Winner’s Bracket and “Final Four.” The Bruins bowed to St. Raymond’s of Bronx, New York and Shanks of Tallahassee. The team and managers raised funds for their trip by selling Value Checks, candy, doughnuts, a foul shoot-a-thon, and raking yards. Although the game has not changed and is the same, this squad has experienced many changes. We are going through a period of metamorphosis. We are fortunate to again have the speed and quickness as in past years, but our size inside has changed. We have, how¬ ever, defeated some of our most worthy competitors. In other close contests we have fought hard only to win some and lose some, but this has not downed the spirit and fortitude of this squad. Some exciting changes are emerging even now. We are learning to play against the hard pressure exerted by our opponents and win. We are now beginning to completely understand the meaning of such words as teamwork, playing together, and good defense. Leadership is emerging from many players. Senior Dawn Parker was elected to take over the captain’s position with senior Chemene Pope and junior Marleita Edwards helping out as elected co-captains. At this writing we are 6 and 6. We have won second place in the Hampton City Invitational Christmas Tournament, defeating returning champions, Deep Creek, and losing to Granby High in the finals. Dawn and Marleita were selected to the All-Tournament Team. We know there are still many challenges ahead. The toughness of our worthy competitors must serve as a catalyst to pull us closer together and cause us to gain more confidence in our abilities. We will fight on, always striving for that 110%. COOPERATIVE OFFICE EDUCATION Cooperative Office Education (COE) is an occupational preparation program of business education whereby students with business career objectives alternate their school schedule between in-school and on-the-job learning experiences. The school program is coordinated with instruction on the job by a professionally trained teacher-coordinator. Students are provided released time from school for on-the-job instruction in occupational areas of their career choices. School credit toward graduation is given for the combination of school and on-the-job instruction. CHROME CLUB According to the Executive Director, Dr. Lillian Bautista Myers, there are more than 94,000 minority youths in our area between the ages of 7-19. However, the number of minorities in math, science and engineering fields are appaulling. “Gains made by Blacks in the early seventies declined due in part to the poor economy and the rising cost of education in the late seventies and early eighties.” CHROME (Cooperating Hampton Roads Organizations for Minorities in Engineering) was organized at Bethel in September, 1987 to identify, nurture, assist and encourage minority students to pursue careers in engineering, science, mathematics and related technological fields. CHRONE joins NACME (National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering), Hampton University Science Program and others who see minorities as being under represented in engineering. The 42 CHROME members at Bethel have made a commitment to stay in good standing with the school both academically and socially, enroll in calculus — track mathematics, i.e., Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Advanced Mathematics and to take all science courses that provide a basic preparation for engineering and engineering-related careers. CHROME members are being provided a number of learning activities for the school year, the Executive Director, Dr. Meyers, motivated students and parents at the September meeting by demonstrating the use of physics as it related to engineering and discussed the purpose of CHROME. Understanding the need to improve study skills to enhance the learning process, Dave Grant and Betty Lindsay from Thomas Nelson Community College served as presenters at a workshop held at Bethel on November 17 for CHROME members. Students were taught how to manage their time and to establish a study schedule. CHROME also strives to help members build self confidence. To this end, Colonel Eugene Scott, Post Commander of Fort Monroe, served as a role model and talked to members at their December meeting on ingredients for success. Furthermore, CHROME members are getting an opportunity to gain firsthand experience about technology by visiting major corporations to see how products are made and talking with engineers and computer technicians. Some CHROME members will participate in NASA’s Space Camp December 29-30, 1987 and internship programs during the summer. Another CHROME sponsor is being solicited so that next year more students will be able to share the CHROME experience. Membership in CHROME is open to students of all races.
