Coach Morgan pulled the team together; however, and this goup or (originally) 3 turned into 15 runners making the fourth best team in the District and Hampton City Champions. Bethel competed against nationally ranked Cardinal Gibbons and Johnstown, the host team, in this 3 day journey. Rodney Burleys 37 points against Lafayette had to be a high. Also his basket atthe buzzer in a win over Ferguson was a steelar achievement. Crowds increased significantly and Bethel Basketball began to draw in the sixth man, the fans, by stunning halftime shows and exciting play on the court. In 13X3, the team’s first year as a Varsity sport, the Bruins won the District title and had a record of 13 wins with only A losses. The next year 13X4, the team was again District champions with a record of Id wins against 4 losses. The District title remained with Bethel in 13X5 as the team finished with an impressive 16 wins against 3 tosses. Last year the Bruins finished the year in third place with a winning record of 12-6. In four years of existence, the Softball team has the best winning percentage of any Bethel team with a 55-17 record, a 76% winning percentage. These teams should be congratulated for a fine effort. This year s addition of the Bethel Bruins Base¬ ball Team features young talented performers, w ho if they play up to potential and as a unit, could be a force to be reckoned with in the Penisula Dis¬ trict. Led by Senior Jeff Harris, last season’s most effective pitcher, and Todd Kelly the Bruin’s hard hitting outfielder, Bethel is looking for an upper division f ' nish, at least, and a District title at best. Coach Bouchard feels that this year’s club has the ability to be most representative of the fine base¬ ball tradition here at Bethel High. ”With three sophomores as probable starters and only two seniors, experience is our obvious short-coming; however, we have some fine young arms on our pitching staff, and the team’s attitude and desire to accomplish our goals should hold us in good stead with the rest of the league. ” Junior, Billy Allen 1X4 Baseball BASEBALL Second baseman, RICKY DRUM, loosens up during spring tryouts as GENE JORDAN and GREG KIRBY took on. A VHSL First-Place proves it true That here are those who seem to have a gift With weaving words that give the heart a lift. Shakespeare was smitten with this talent, too. I’m glad that he developed it, aren’t you? Too bad the kids who went to Avon High Were not as blessed by chance as you and I. They knew the Bard before he made his fame; They had no chance to glory in his name. Old Bethel High School smiling by the Bay Shall not be left as destitute as they. Like football, track, and every other game. The Bruins write for literary fame. As editor of the Bear Facts this year, I feel we have taken steps to improve an already good paper. We have tried to leave school grounds and report on some aspects of society that effect our student population. On a practical basis we have increased the size of our paper from 8 to 16 pages, and have purchased a computer to improve the looks of the Bear Facts. All in all, ’86-87 has been a very good year. We would like to thank all the students and faculty, and wish everyone the best of luck in years to come.
