Some were excited, some were tearful. There were regrets of the past and hopes for the future. The end had arrived. Life would be different for the clan of eighty- three. 7 ' here would be jobs or college or perhaps an uncommited rest period. Bethel was chaotic and depressing but for some odd reason, it was strangely secure. The end had arrived and whether the graduate was anxious or mournful, there was a tinge of fear hidden somewhere. The 1982 Bethel Bruins had one of the most devastating defenses in the state of Virginia. Their seven shutouts and allowing only 16 points for 9 games enabled the Bruisin’ Bruins to again battle the Hampton Crabbers for the District Championship and the right to represent the district in the playoffs. Surpassing Hampton in every category statistical]— including penalties—the Bruins dropped a hard fought 7-0 de¬ cision before an estimated 15,000 people in a jam packed Darling Stadium. Seventeen seniors tended the leadership needed to post an excellent 7-2-1 record. The tri-captains, Darryl Jones, Timmy Carter, and Herbert Hope utilized their roles most effectively to maintain execution at a superior level. Offensive standouts were Phillip Jones, James Clark, Hope, Creighton Incorminias, Jason Nicolai, Gary Lon¬ don, Chris Stephenson, Carl Armstead, Alvin Bailey, and James “Hot Shot’’ Wil¬ liams. Tim Carter led the league in completion percentage to Steve Scott, London, and Stephnson. The offensive team averaged 21 points a game and James Williams gained 800 yards in 7 games as our tailback. Bobby Preston handled the place kicking. Defense began with the kick off and Bethel’s first nose guard, MacArthur Pair, in 7 years handled that chore extremely well and then helped the defense greatly. He joined Tim Warren, Herbie Hope, James Clark, Kenny Taylor, London, Joe Sanders, John Britt, Darryl Jones, Orlando Whitely, Roderick Farthings, Joe Jones, Terrill Britt, Kevin Turner, Scott, and Reggie Fullwood to give up only 30 points all season while holding all teams to a total of 803 yards for an 80 yard average per game! The Best defensive performance by a Bethel team to date! They gave up 351 yards rushing and 452 yards passing. The opponents only earned 66 first downs all year or only 66 per game. The 1982 seniors have a lot to be proud of in their performance. Some small er¬ rors at the most inopportune times to keep them from achieving their goal. Their united leadership set an excellent example for future Bruins. Opening the season with a victory our arc-rival Hampton High School, the Bruins suffered several close defeats to various opponents. The team did distinguish themselves, however, in be¬ ing the only team in the district besides Warwick to defeat Denbigh High School twice in one season. Seniors Tim Warren, Steve Scott, Gary Lon¬ don, and Ray Sims were the leading scorers throughout the season. Bethel Coach Sam Butler looked forward to next year to what he considered to be a great group of underclassmen! Juniors Curtis Burley, Willie Barnes and sophomores Tony Matthews, Creighton Incoxmenias and Todd Williams gained valuable experience and saw plenty of action during the 82-83 season! Freshmen Theodore Johnson and Tracy King were two underclassmen that Coach Butler feels will be outstanding players for Bethel in the future. Patterson’s emer¬ gence as Bethel’s floor leader has been one of reasons for the teams impressive record. She’s the only girl in the district to score in double figures for the entire season. But by no means has she been the shining star for the Bruins. Track star Senior Janet Revells im¬ pressively averaging 4 block shots and 10 rebounds a game. She’s been a constant intimidator to every offensive team this season. Junior Tanya Savage and Pamela Overbey have continued their defen¬ sive strength with Revells to give Bethel a formidable front court. Young freshman Candice Tillman and Junior Kelli Windrow have teamed with Patterson to handle point guard responsibilities. After disappointing campaign last year, he was faced with the task of molding group of inexperienced wrestlers into a competitive team. To say he has done a good job would be a massive understatement. All Bethel Wrestling Fans will agree that this years squad is a “Mean, Clean, Fighting Machine Richie Aydllette is wrestling probably the toughest weight in the district. It seems like all Peninssula-Area teams have standout wrestlers at this weight, but Aydllette has held his own against all of them. What can we say about 138 pound senior captain David Jensen that hasn’t already been said. Jensen has pinned opponent after opponent, with his eye on a possible State Championship. At 145 pounds, Bethel has been lucky enough to have two steady seniors. Jennings Handy and Derrick Southcombe are relatively equal in ability and both have been impressive. Senior heavyweight Robert Clayton is the most intimidating wrestler in the district. Heavyweights as big as he (6’2”, 270 pounds] are few and far between. So far, Clayton has demolished all his opponents. This years team has set a realistic goal, the District Championship. In the past this goal has been somewhat out of reach, but this year Bethel has enough big guns to do it. COWLES Every effort was made to make this yearbook relate to each Bethel student. The staff would like to say a special thanks to the following people: Mrs. H. G. Cowles and her Stenography II class for typing all the copy sheets, those faculty members who tolerated our staff’s special needs. A special thanks to co-editors, Karen Taylor, Darrell Motley, Tiffani Sills, and Joann Harrell. Putting out a yearbook is a hard task. For those on our staff who dared to dream, the rewards were few, the hours were long, the hassles were many, but the self-satisfaction and that very special part of creativity kept us moving along.
