The basic concern of the art program is to give each student the opportunity to become involved in the visual-aesthetic experience. The visual arts are largely concerned with seeing, feeling and developing creative visual relationships. The art program provides opportunities for the adolescent to develop to his fullest creative potential. m TO Introduction ! 0 iU ' niVvi! ? V: ' V.. The enthusiasm that radiates from a pep assembly delivers its greatest impact, not to atheletic success, but to a healthy school spirit. The pep assemblies allow the students to see what the spirit of being a Bruin is, and what it is like to belong, and to be a part of high school. For these reasons the pictures are displayed here so that one might remember their values. 16 Introduction - w,. TB6 BONG AND WINDING ROAD WEB ?. Classes 17 iw. Who ever said that school is boring must have never attended Bethel High School. At Bethel there is never a dull moment for those who have school spirit or are looking for something to get involved in. The vast majority of students can usually be found cheering the football team on at every game. Not only are there football games, but there are baseball and basketball as well as wrestling matches to attend. There are thirty four clubs and organizations to choose from. There is something to interest just about everyone. There are service clubs and many others. Besides clubs and sports Bethel offers many special activities every year. Among these are Homecoming, the Miss BHS Pageant, the Holly Ball, the Ring Dance, Senior Prom and the annual Bon Fire preceding the Hampton-Bethel Game. Those who complain that there is nothing to do here should take a minute to review the opportunities available at Bethel and either get involved or quit complaining. Layout sheets have to be drawn; pictures must be taken and organization of the finished product must meet deadline and close inspection. Many hours are spent each week preparing the layouts for publication and many people take time out of their afternoons for the yearbook. The production of a yearbook is fun, but a tremendous amount of hard time-consuming work goes into its production. Playing six of the top ten teams in the state and defeating four of them is truly a credit to the staff and players. As a matter of fact, two of the teams we defeated were participants in the state semi-finals. Bethel finished the year with six defensive shut outs. The defense which ranked 1 in the district and state was led by seniors, Mike London (Cap¬ tain), Ronnie Spruill (Captain), and Shaun Gayle, a junior. Other standouts were Clarance Hawkins, Vic Morgan, Stanley Batten, Tracy Richardson (Captain), John Epps, and Frank Brown our punter. Underclassmen playing well were: Scott Windrow, William Wood, Teko Tillman, and Randy Spruill. The Bethel offense which gained over 1600 yards and led the league in passing. Normally a ball control team, the Bruins used the passing of Mark Roberts, Lance Jackson, and Frank Brown to have the best completion per¬ centage in the league. Outstanding senior performers were Tim Morgan, Lou Bartek (Captain), Ronnie Spruill, Paul Dunn, Charlie Johnson, Eric Taylor, and Matthew Marable. Underclassmen playing well were Ray White, Stevie Cooke, Tracy Carter, Jeff Lewis, David Waddell, Reggie Smith, and Oliver (O.J.) James. The specialty teams were led by seniors Mike Arthur, Kurt Booker, and Eddie Williams. In the annual Hampton Meed Bowl, Bethel Statistically dominated an undefeated, untied Crabber Team only to miss scoring opportunities halted by penalities — and resulted in a scoreless 0-0 tie. Many players received honors for their play and a majority will participate on the college level with scholarship. Bethel placed two on the All-South Team (Ron Spruill and Lou Bartek) and one on the All American Team (Lou Bartek). Sly is averaging 14 points a game through the 1 st half of the season and is top rebounder. The only other player scoring in double figures is a Junior, Rodger Mason at 12 points per game. Rodger is the leading rebounder, followed closely by Senior, Mike London, and Mark Paquette. Leading the team in assists and steals is a Junior guard, Gene (Teko) Tillman. Kevin Smith is the only Sophomore on the varsity and was elevated to a starting position when Junior, Ricky Breeden broke his nose in the Menchville game and was lost for the season. Others contributing this year are Senior Guard, Larry Player and forward, Barry Holmes. Junior, Guard, Brian (Duke) Saucier is also seeing action. Halfway through the season the Bruins sport a 3-5 conference mark which has them one-half game out of 5th place.
