Cooperative Office Education students ' schedules are arranged so that they attend classes part of the school day and are employed in offices during the other part of the day. Culminating the season, the Bruins lost a heart- breaker to eventual state champion, Hampton, by a 10-9 score. The offense led the way throughout the season with the aid of linemen Chris Chavis, Danny Jones, Eddie Ledford, Lou Bartek, Ronnie Spruill, Tim Morgan, Jeff Periera, and Scott Windrow. Frank Brown, Mark Roberts and Lance Jackson alternated the quarterback duties. Defensively the Bruins were inexperienced. Shawn Gayle came to the forefront during the last few games to anchor the defense from his linebacker post. Other stalwarts were Tracy Richardson, Clarence Haw¬ kins, Victor Morgan, Derik Cooke, and Jeff Pereira. Five Bruins made all District: four on offense — Lou Bartek, Ronnie Spruill, Jimmy Gayle, and Eric Brown, and one defense — Ben Johnson. Brown went on to be all-state. Other team members who played like all staters were Jeff Pereira, Chris Chavis, and Danny Jones. All six of these athletes will be competing next year in football representing institutions of higher learning. The Bruins were also without the services of Headcoach, Dennis Kizlowski, during most of the season because of back surgery. Assistant Coach Sam Butler acted as the intrim head coach while Coach Charles Brown ran the defense and Coach Roger Bouchard deployed the of¬ fense. What makes Eric Brown go so fast. That ' s something physicians and coaches with the United States Olympic Development Committee would like to know. As one of the top prep sprinters in the country, ' E.B. ' has been selected to attend an Olympic Committee sponsored seminar at Colorado Springs, Col¬ orado beginning July 31 and ending August 4. Eric ' s invitation indicates that one-third of the sprinters selected are con¬ sidered potential Olympians, says Bethel High assistant track coach Dennis Kozlowski, who is entertaining the idea of accompanying Brown on the excursion. The purpose of the seminar is two-fold with sprinters like Brown servi ng as both pupil and guinea pig. In an intensified learning program lasting eight to 10 hours a day, says Kozlowski, the sprinters will be instructed on training techniques, different workout procedures, and exposed to different philosophies about sprinting. While the sprinters are learning from one another, and from Olympic Committee Chairman Willie L. Williams of the University of Arizona and his coaching staff, doctors and clinicians will be studying the sprinters. With 10.4 and 10.5 100 meter times winning such prestigious events as the Penn Relays, Brown fashioned a 10.2 in the Volunteer Track Classic last month, easily explaining the UCLA-Bound performers invitation to the sem¬ inar. We think Eric has a shot at the national prep record in the 220, notes Kozlowski. Ronnie Harris has the state record in 21.0 and I think the national mark is 20.9. Brown ran a 21.1 a year ago and has already gone 21.3 this season. Track 155 BEST YEAR FOR SWIMMING TEAM 9-1 ) This past season the swim team experienced its best competitive year in compiling a 9-1 record. The team was lead by seniors Steve Mills, Kevin McGrady, Carl Klingenberg, Lisa Cohen, and June Harris. The Bruins won the honors of city champions in a two-day meet that included all district teams except Lafayette H.S. The prominent and most valuable swimmers were senior Steve Mills, Robin Phaup, Lisa Cohen, and Carl Klingenberg. The team brought home high honors from the Peninsula Relays, ODU Invitational and Hampton City Champions. The overall depth and excellent caliber young swimmers will make the Bruins contenders for years to come. CONGRATULATIONS TEAM! Charlotte Cooper was named to the All-District team with Honorable Mention for Donna Dabney and Jessie Iverson. The Lady Bruins composed of 5 Seniors, 6 Ju¬ niors, and 4 Sophomores also earned the district respect and the title of the fastest district team. It was a rebuilding year for the Bruins team. The team started out with 12 members and finished with 9. There were only 2 seniors on the team; guard Albert Cooper who helped the Bruins tremend¬ ously and Captain Forward David Johnson. Johnson brought many good points for Bethel to offset the bad season. He finished third in the district in scoring with a 19.6 average, also he was named to the All Peninsula Honorable Mention. During the Christmas tourna¬ ments, Bethel attended the Maggie-Walker Armstrong tournament where Johnson turned in a superb showing scoring 73 points in three games; earning himself a spot on the All-tournament team and was voted the tournaments best offensive player. As for the teams achievements, Johnson was voted Most Valuable Player and the team ' s Best Offensive Player. The third trophy was given to Junior Forward Sylvester Rainey, he was the Team ' s most aggressive player. A point to remember for the Bruin ' s basketball team 7 of the 9 players return. Each of the players returning has more experience and Coach Hintz ' s crew will be ready for the upcoming year. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: Front Row, Left to Right: Cathy Williford, Barry Holmes, ).). The Bruin golfers proved that the coaches ' prediction was fairly accurate. The Bruins compiled an 8-2 record with losses to Princess Anne (The eventual State Champion) and regular season co-champion, Lafayette. By finishing second in the District Tournament the Bruin golfers advanced to Regional play. In the district tournament, Mike Bryant fired a 76 on opening day to tie for the individual low score. Mike fired an 81 the second day and finished 4th individually. Dale Crumpler fired a second round 75 after opening with an 83. In Regional play, the Bruins finished second to Princess Anne to take the second of two spots available for the State Tournament. Curtis Leggett won a medal for 3rd lowest indi¬ vidual score with a round of 75. Mike Bryant shot a fire 77 and Dale Crumpler a 79. Also contributing to the Bethel cause was Brian Brewster with an 84. The Bruins advanced to the State Tournament in Sterling VA. The Bruins finished 7th out of 8 teams. This is, however, the first time Bethel has had a golf team advance to the State Tournament. The top 6 players on the Bruin team graduate this year. Through long, all night deadlines ses¬ sions the staffers had labored over neglected layouts. Lost copy, total chaos and laughing attacks dis¬ tracted the URSA MAJOR Crew from its ultimate goal — a book that would please the student body as well as critics from the Virginia Fligh School League. As the members worked on their sections, they tried to combine an overall theme with their own ideas on individuality. The memories of the 1977-1 978 school year were captured within the pages of this book as the staff strived to picture the school and all its aspects i n a unique style that would itself be remembered for years to come.
