Free Tutoring Service Offered The main achievement of the National Honor Society was the creation of a free tutoring service offered to any Bethel student. This enabled stu¬ dents to obtain extra help during lunches and af¬ ter school in subjects where they were doing poorly. Two seasonal conventions were attended by some of the members. The main theme for both was “Education in the School and How to Im¬ prove It.” New members were installed at an assembly May 17. Sponsors were Mrs. Judy Thomas and Mrs. Kathryn LeFevere. 19

Scoreboard Set Up For Baseball Games Interact stayed busy this year working de- voutely on the creation of a scoreboard to be used for Varsity and Junior Varsity Baseball games. The work took nearly three months and the fi¬ nances for the $200 project came mostly from keeping concessions during wrestling matches, baseball and basketball games, and from car washes. The other big event for the year was the annual Spirit Week celebrations which included the bonfire, dance, hat day, sign day and hobo day. The Fall Convention was held in Richmond and the Spring Convention was held at Virginia Beach. The club also contributed to Toys For Tots. President was Norman Tarbell and Mr, Richard Sailey was sponsor. 18

Field Trips Enrich Science Knowledge The purpose of the Science Club is to promote interest in all areas of science. During the year many field trips were taken to explore the science world and build enthusiasm in related careers. The club visited the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to attend lectures on pollution, toured the International Transportation Exposition at Dulles Airport, and went to William and Mary for a fo¬ rum on chemistry. At the Tidewater Science Congress in March, four students received recognition for their en¬ tries. Those students were Rosemary Tirrinanzi, Jenny Turpin, Helen Benet and Norman Tarbell. At the Va. Junior Academy of Science, Mitch Carr received a third place in physics. 20
