Campus Life Offers Excitement and Fun Campus Life, affiliated with Youth For Christ, involved many Bethel students again this year in their activities. Continuing from last Spring the club had meetings in the lecture room every Tues¬ day night. The main purpose of the organization is to show teens that Jesus Christ can be an an¬ swer to their problems. Throughout the year, stu¬ dents participated in Bible studies, all-night bowl¬ ing parties, youth rallies, walk-a-thons, skating parties, weekend retreats, swimming parties, and the creation of a haunted house during Hallow¬ een. Some B.H.S. students were also members of the Campus Life Singers. The entire program is run by Dwight “Ike” Newingham and Eddie Nalle, both working for Youth For Christ, Inter¬ national. 11 Radio Program Improves B.H.S. Popularity Under the direction of Mrs. Claudette Keeney, Bethel sponsored their first radio program. The “Bruin Broadcasting Company” or B.B.C., pro¬ duced 15 minutes of Bethel news, sports, and cur¬ rent events each week on WVEC-FM radio. The club consisted of seven students, some whom are interested in broadcasting as a career and others finding the extra activity a fun way to spend a class period. In all, the broadcast was one more step to making Bethel the best school on the Pen¬ insula. Good morning, Mr. Phelps . . . 12 mm Library Starts New File An enthusiasm to work with and around books are the only requirements necessary to join the Library Club. Members spent many hours shelving- new books and working with money making projects such as bake sales. The club sponsored a special program this year open to all students and teachers. The “Com¬ munity Resource File” provided information on tours, places of interests and speakers that were available to anyone in the community. National Library Week, April 16-22, kept the club busy with a different feature every day. There were sculpture, speed reading, and poster contests, as well as a tea for the teachers and a sale of bookmarkers. 13 Key Clubbers Serve As Big Brothers The Key Club could not possibly have been called idle during this year. They stayed busy serving school and community and deserve much credit for their work. One of their main projects was serving as Big Brothers to area boys whom they took to three of the Coliseum basketball games. Other activities included selling programs during football games, handling concessions at the basketball games, collecting for Multiple Sclerosis, sponsoring the Donkey Basketball games and the Magicians Basketball game, and selling donuts on week-ends in order to buy new track uniforms. They went caroling at Christmas with the Keyetts and had a picnic together in the Spring. The an¬ nual Key Club Convention was held this year in March at Baltimore. President of the club was David Hutcheson and Mr. Dennis Kozlowski was sponsor. 14 Bethel Keyettes Chosen Best in District Sponsoring a foster child in Arizona and “adopting” an old age home are only two of the activities which made our Keyette Club one of the best clubs on the Peninsula. In the summer, the Keyettes cleaned Grand View and took some chil¬ dren to Blue-Bird Gap Farm. Keyettes again sponsored powder puff football and presented the winning Seniors a plaque. Anxiously awaiting the convention, all of the Keyettes helped raise money for their international project. The Keyette aim to serve the school, community, and country was definitely fulfilled. An apple a day “may” keep the teachers away. 15 Jukebox Provides Music for Lunch Surprise, surprise, surprise 16 S.C.A. OFFICERS: Keith Hargrave, chaplain; Pam Pugh, secretary; Romeo Gillis, president; JoAnn Price, treasurer; John Spring, vice-president. The S.C.A. kept busy this year making as many school improvements as possible. Changes were made in the constitution, repre¬ sentation and election of officers. The largest achievement was in attaining a jukebox to be played in the cafeteria before school and during lunch. Delegates were sent to the state conven¬ tion in Roanoke, the district meeting at Berke¬ ley and the summer workshop at Lexington. Other events during the year included Home¬ coming, Toys for Tots, and three assemblies featuring the CONARC band, Pilgrim 20, and Free Fare, both rock bands. Miss Janice Hud¬ gins was sponsor. 17 Scoreboard Set Up For Baseball Games Interact stayed busy this year working de- voutely on the creation of a scoreboard to be used for Varsity and Junior Varsity Baseball games. The work took nearly three months and the fi¬ nances for the $200 project came mostly from keeping concessions during wrestling matches, baseball and basketball games, and from car washes. The other big event for the year was the annual Spirit Week celebrations which included the bonfire, dance, hat day, sign day and hobo day. The Fall Convention was held in Richmond and the Spring Convention was held at Virginia Beach. The club also contributed to Toys For Tots. President was Norman Tarbell and Mr, Richard Sailey was sponsor. 18 Free Tutoring Service Offered The main achievement of the National Honor Society was the creation of a free tutoring service offered to any Bethel student. This enabled stu¬ dents to obtain extra help during lunches and af¬ ter school in subjects where they were doing poorly. Two seasonal conventions were attended by some of the members. The main theme for both was “Education in the School and How to Im¬ prove It.” New members were installed at an assembly May 17. Sponsors were Mrs. Judy Thomas and Mrs. Kathryn LeFevere. 19 Field Trips Enrich Science Knowledge The purpose of the Science Club is to promote interest in all areas of science. During the year many field trips were taken to explore the science world and build enthusiasm in related careers. The club visited the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to attend lectures on pollution, toured the International Transportation Exposition at Dulles Airport, and went to William and Mary for a fo¬ rum on chemistry. At the Tidewater Science Congress in March, four students received recognition for their en¬ tries. Those students were Rosemary Tirrinanzi, Jenny Turpin, Helen Benet and Norman Tarbell. At the Va. Junior Academy of Science, Mitch Carr received a third place in physics. 20 Six Juniors A ttend Boys’ and Girls ' State The purpose of Boys’ and Girls’ State is to offer a better understanding of governmental practices to chosen students from area high schools. The twelve juniors chosen as delegates are elected through the history department on the basis of character, leadership, and scholastic record. The six boys attended the College of William and Mary during the week of June 11-17. Girls’ State was held at Radford College during the same week. 21 Debate Team Rates Fourth in District The Debate Team, as their name implies, par¬ ticipates in debates on the district and state level. Though they are just a novice team, they placed fourth in the district. They attended a workshop on debating in the early Fall, held at Pembroke High School. The affirmative and negative teams have participated in invitational meets at York High, Warwick High and the University of Rich¬ mond where the affirmative speakers received an “Outstanding Honorable Mention.” The team was under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Todd. Forensics Improves Speaking Ability The Forensics Team is not really a club, but rather an activity which attracts any students in¬ terested in public speaking. During the year they participated in the Spelling and Poetry categories of the District Meet in March and also in the American Legion Contest and the Voice of De¬ mocracy. Though they had no student to place, the experience helped them to obtain their main objective of improving speaking ability. Team sponsor was Mrs. Margaret Todd and Helen Benet was elected as president. 22 Chess Team . . . King of the Board The Chess Team had an outstanding year in which they captured two trophies for the school. They became District Champions once again with a 7:1 record losing only to Hampton Roads Academy. At the Washington Tournament, they received fifth place awards from competition in¬ volving more than forty differe nt schools. In District Individual Championship, James Edsel came in with a third place win and Charles Young won first place. The team anticipates going to State, if it is held, where they hope to boost their scoring record. The team consists of five players, two seniors, two juniors and one sopho¬ more. Sponsor for the team was Mr. Jeffrey Mar- ing. 23 Newsreels Help in Country The German Club was active this year in promoting German culture within the club it¬ self. At the beginning of the year, a dinner was served in the home ec. room and consisted of bratwurst (hot dogs), apfelkuchen (apple strut- tie), and krtopfelsalat (potato salad). Each month, there was a Continental Breakfast held and in June, there was a picnic held at Newport News City Park. Newsreels, ordered from Ger¬ many about the country provided interesting entertainment for several meetings. Rosemary Tirrinanzi was president and Mr. Joseph Spitzer was sponsor. See Spot . . . See Spot run. 24 French Embassy Visited Most of the activities of the French Club seemed to center around food. At the Christ¬ mas party, such authentic delicacies as onion soup, pastries, and escargot (snails) were sam¬ pled. The club decorated a car for the home¬ coming parade, participated in the Toys For Tots Drive and went caroling during Christmas vacation. The main goal of the club was a trip to the French Embassy and a French restaurant in Washington, D.C. This was accomplished af¬ ter many doughnut and bake sales. The sponsor this year was Mrs. Kathryn LeFevere and club president was Mike Kinney. 25 Health Club Buys Clinic a Wheelchair The Cadeusas Health Career’s Club at B.H.S. was established last year but has already started a long term service project for the school. As a Christmas project the club sold bows made by the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center and gave the teen¬ agers a party. With the profits off the bows a stretcher wheelchair was bought for the clinic. The club heard from representatives of the American Red Cross, Thomas Nelson’s Associate Degree Nursing Program, Riverside Hospital, and an Army Recruiter. A trip was taken to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. where nursing and other careers were viewed. Mrs. Jeanne Brad¬ ley, school nurse was sponsor and Rose-Marie Webster was president. 26 F.B.L.A. is Active in Community Projects The Future Business Leaders of America had an active year in the community as well as at school. Besides the development of competent business leadership, improving the home and community is another effort of the club. Some ac¬ tivities this year included a field trip to a Business College and a Data Processing Center, hostesses at the Business Department Open House during National Education Week, making a thanksgiving basket for a needy family, sponsoring a trip to see the Ice Capades at the Coliseum for underprivi¬ leged children, contributing a gift to the Business Department and providing playtime activities for students at the Virginia State School. The presi¬ dent of the club was Sharon White and sponsor was Mrs. Marion Palmer. F.T.A. Assist Teachers to Gain Experience The Future Teachers of America began the year with the observation of American Education Week, highlighted by an assembly with the Co- narc Band and a fund raising project with the tra¬ ditional sale of candied apples. Service projects included volunteer work at Sarah Hudgins and as¬ sisting teachers which also provided good training. In the Spring a trip was taken to the College of William and Mary in order to gain a better un¬ derstanding of college life. The sponsors for the group were Mrs. Catherine Wilson and Mrs. Jerry Tylavsky. 27 Home Ec. Club Stresses Individual Management The Home Economics Club, formally known as Future Homemakers of America, attracted many girls enrolled in home ec. classes. The main pro¬ ject of the club was selling candy to raise money. As the name implies, the club stresses individ¬ ual management of the girls. Each class started a savings account with Mrs. Lane. They set up their own goals and upon reaching them, a trip was planned to visit New York City. Over seventy girls took the bus tour in April. They visited Man¬ hattan and Radio City, and explored the salesmen techniques while shopping in the stores. Mrs. Em¬ ily Lovett sponsored the club. k n§-? • j 28 G.R.A.’s Start Modern Dance Group The Modern Dance Group was added to the Girl’s Recreational Association this year. This group, along with gymnastics, track, basketball and other sports, was open to any interested girls. The activities gave the girls a chance to receive exercise, and competition to test their skills and patience. Coming up fourth in the district City Competition, they anticipate going to State Com¬ petition next year. Instructors for G.R.A.’s are Mrs. Pope and Mrs. Wolfe. 29 Bethel Majorettes add Grace to Football Field Under the leadership of their captain, Theresa White, the Majorettes added much beauty and grace to the football games and at pep rallies. The eight girls spent long hours learning new routines and their prac¬ tice proved to be effective in the competition meets. They entered twirling contests both as a squad and individually and won a second place in the regional competition for the National Majorette Association. They also marched in the Appleblossom Festival Pa¬ rade in Winchester, Va. and in the Williamsburg Christmas Parade. Here at Bethel, they performed with batons, pom-poms, and fire batons and ushered for the band concerts. The sponsor this year was Mrs. Susan Portlock. 30 JoAnn, we’ve got to stop meeting like this. Troubadour Works Hard to Meet Demand Along with normal class assignments, a few stu¬ dents from Creative Writing also find time to work on the Troubadour and the Rejection Slip. The Troubadour is Bethel’s literary magazine and is published annually. Any of the students are en¬ couraged to submit poetry, prose, or art and the best material is selected for publication. The Rejection Slip, a satirical magazine, con¬ tains material aimed at anything from student government and prejudice to puppy love and par¬ ents. The staff submits all work for this. The staff is under the leadership of Tom Wat¬ son and JoAnn Langley editors, and Miss Cather¬ ine Biles. 31 Community Service is Full Time Project The Y-Teens was formed at Bethel to help build character, dependability and leadership in the girls that joined. This year, serving in the community seemed to be a full time project. Dur¬ ing the Christmas season decorations were made for the confined patients at Patrick Henry Hospi¬ tal and a party was given for a needy Tidewater family. Easter bunnies were made for deprived children in the first grade at Machen Elementary. Other activities included pajama parties, award banquets and club meetings. 32 I forgot how to use this thing. Photo Staff Proves to be Efficient Without the co-operation and dependability of the Photo Staff, there would be no annual or news¬ paper printed. These six dedicated workers were on call almost any time of the day or night. They con¬ tributed a lot of their time to photographing, print¬ ing, and helping where they could be used. The re¬ sults of their hard work were viewed in many beau¬ tiful pictures for the school and individual students. 33 Annual Staff Creates a Two-Part Book Instead of being a handicap, the inexperience of this year’s Annual staff proved to be an asset. Originality was the main objective and the staff achieved this goal by designing a two-part book. With plans underway, the staff got busy and busy they were! The new ideas took much effort and skill and the staff spent many long hours after school and on weekends in order to meet dead¬ lines. The editor-in-chief was Frances Tedder and sponsor was Mr. Eugene Moser. “True Grit” 34 Bear Facts Staff Visits Daily Press Despite financial difficulties, the staff of the Bear Facts strived to serve the students. Though the quantity of the papers were reduced, the qual¬ ity remained superb. Issues were distributed dur¬ ing the Christmas season, on Valentine’s Day and as graduation neared, a senior edition came out containing the “last will and testament” of all graduating seniors. Each issue kept students in¬ formed on school activities. Part of the sta ff attended a journalism work¬ shop at the University of Richmond where new techniques were learned that enhanced their abili¬ ties. They also took a tour of the Daily Press building and Kecoughtan invited them to observe their group in action. Sponsor for the staff was Mr. Jeffrey Maring. 35 J.V. Cheerleaders show school spirit. Cheerleaders Work Hard to Encourage Enthusiasm The main purpose of the cheerleading squad is to promote school spirit. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders tried to accomplish this through cheering at football and basketball games and a few wrestling matches. The Varsity Cheerleaders also sold ads for the football programs and helped with the Penin¬ sula United Fund. They were under the leader¬ ship of Susie Koepp and Debbie Auman, co-cap¬ tains, and they were sponsored by Mrs. Wayne Meleski. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders served as hostesses at the opening of “Salt and Pepper” on Warwick Boulevard. They were sponsored by Miss Linda Miller and co-captains were Karen Lovetta and Patsy Bresette. 36 The only one in captivity. English Department Undergoes Revision As head of the English Department, Mrs. Anderson has been busy evaluating the English curriculum for a self study program. New courses are being selected to aid students in further study. The Humanities and civilizations classes were de¬ signed to challenge the student in his thinking concerning man and his world. 38 World War I was not in the 1800’s! Right on, man! Black Studies Added to History Curriculum The History Department at Bethel High broad¬ ened its curriculum with the addition of Black Studies. This course introduced to the student rel¬ evant material on both the history and language of the black people. Students taking the course also published a newspaper, “The Voice,” which as its name indicates, expressed current ideas and opinions. The Black Studies, in conjunction with world history, U.S. history, and U.S. government, provided a wide range of studies within the his¬ tory department all under the head of Mr. Wil¬ liam Evans. What was the name of that war? 39 Students Increase Knowledge of Numbers Bethel’s Mathematics Department offered a wide range of courses for those students either needing a math credit or interested in extending their knowledge of the field. Classes started at the lower levels of general math and progressed into Math Analysis and Calculus for the advanced stu¬ dents. Mr. Richard Sailey did an excellent job of heading up the department. 40 I knew Einstein was wrong. Science Challenges Students to Think Under the direction of Miss Frances Min¬ kins, the Science Department challenged students to learn more about the world in which they live. In both classwork and labs, new ideas were met and attempted to be understood. Students were offered classes in Biology, Physiology, Chemistry, and Physics and many of them signed up more for the challenge than for the credit. 41 Gymnastics Strive to Build Healthy Bodies Reaching, jumping, throwing, flipping, pulling, pushing, and rushing through a cold shower are only a part of an hour’s work in gym. Under the able leadership of Mr. Anthony Hatsias, the Physi¬ cal Education department attempted to strengthen the body as well as the mind of many gym students. They were given the opportunity to participate in games and sports along with learning personal health and hygiene in the Health Classes. Driver’s Education was also offered as part of the curricu¬ lum. 42 Students Prepare for Business World Accounting . . . Economics . . . Machinery techniques . . . These are all a part of the busi¬ ness department, headed by Mrs. Elsie Cox. The main achievement is to improve occupational skills thus producing effective job workers. New equipment was added this year in data processing, including a badly needed key punch machine. The largest number of students sign up for steno and typing classes, usually in order to improve school work. The department hopes to add new courses and extra working room next year. 43 Languages Bridge Communications Gap The need to be conversant in a foreign lan¬ guage is becoming increasingly important. At Be¬ thel, emphasis is placed upon the languages as a means of communication. Department head, Mr. James Earley, did a lot to promote enthusiasm in foreign countries and their languages. During Na¬ tional Foreign Language Week, students wore costumes reflecting the dress of natives of the country they were studying. Signs were also hung about the school. Is that how you spell it? 44 R.O.T.C. Receives Honor Awards For exceptional bravery . . . This has marked the second year for the Army Junior R.O.T.C. program here at Bethel and many are looking forward to next year when the full three year program will be effective. The ac¬ complishments for the year proved to be more than gratifying. Although at press time, no official notice has been received, there is every indication that the Cadet Battalion will once again receive the “Honor School” and “Honor School with Dis¬ tinction” awards from the Department of the Army. These awards will place Bethel’s R.O.T.C. program at the top of all United States high schools. 45 Students Express Themselves “Express Yourself,” could easily have been the theme for the Fine Arts Department this year, where students had a chance to freely ex¬ press themselves while developing their individ¬ ual talents. Under the direction of Mr. William Wiggs, band, chorus, art and drama gave stu¬ dents a wider range of electives to choose from. Many students enrolled in more than one of the classes. Throughout the year the students had a chance to show their talents in exhibits, con¬ certs and plays. 46 Industrial Arts Teach Useful Skills Perhaps the most useful courses offered to students are those under the Practical Arts de¬ partment. In the areas of industrial arts and home economics, students learn skills helpful to them both at home and school. This year there was more experimentation with making simu¬ lated models from plans, and practicing skills that were learned. Hoping to interest more girls in the industrial crafts, more courses are being planned for the future. Mr. Chisman was de¬ partment head. 47 Marty Wade A warded “Boy Student of the Year ” The purpose of the Distributive Education Club is to improve understanding in occupational rela¬ tionships. They visited many shopping centers to observe sales techniques. Some of these included Pembroke Mall, Military Circle Mall, stores in Washington, and the new Model City Complex in Maryland. In November, the annual Employer- Employee Banquet was held at Bethel and in De¬ cember, the Open House for Faculty and Admin¬ istration. At the District Meet, Bethel placed in seven categories and Marty Wade was awarded as “Boy Student of the Year,” enabling him and two other delegates to go to State Competition in Roanoke. Studying diligently helps to raise grades. 48 Bruins Only Team to Defeat Mariners Bruin Power continued its dominance over Ferguson for the fourth straight year by defeating the Mariners, 14-7, in a crucial grid game for both teams. With early season wins over Menchville, Denbigh, James Blair, Norcom, and Pembroke, the Green and Gold found themselves in a four¬ way tie for the district lead. However, in a rain- soaked Homecoming game, the Bruins were knocked out of first place when Kecoughtan upset the highly-favored Bethel club. Other losses came from the hands of York, Warwick, and arch-rival Hampton. With a total of only twelve seniors on the team, the Bethel High School Bruins can look forward to an even better season next year. 49 Bethel Fourth in Football mm . ■ r ■■ ■ ' ' ■ .... V. ’s Inexperience and depth seemed to be the main factors a gainst the Baby Bruins as the J.V.’s posted one victory in ten games. According to Coach Bouchard, the lack of depth was attributed to the fact that most sophomores, who were to play for the J.V.’s, were moved to the varsity level. The coach stressed that even though the junior gridders had a losing season, they gave 100% to make every game a tough one. Fumbles, interceptions, and penalties proved to be the deci¬ sive mistakes. J.V. quarterback throws to an open receiver in first quarter against Hampton. 53 Cross Country Defeats Hampton While not having an over-all winning sea¬ son, the cross country team experienced several bright moments. Posting a 2-5 record, the Bruins met with their perennial rival Hampton, with the BHS harriers edging the Crabbers, 27- 28. However, Bethel was denied the right to en¬ ter the district meet as the Bruins committed two faults in a single meet, which automatically disqualifies any team. Nelson Stortz and Stan O’Grady provided several individual highlights with their fine performances in many meets. 54 Wynder Top Scorer in District Led by Teko Wynder’s ability to score consist¬ ently, the Bruin basketball team finished the sec¬ ond half of the season winning six of the last nine games. During the first half, the Bruin quintet found themselves losing seven of the first nine contests, with several of the games decided by the last quarter of play. Marty Tingeloff and Craig Williams contributed much to the team effort with their excellent ball control. Mike Faulk, Gil Stewart, and Andre’ Wallace hampered other teams with their scoring ability. However, in the district tournament, the Bruins were edged out by Menchville in overtime, 61-59. 55 Bruins Finish Season Strongly 56 Bethel Enters District Tournament Bruin Andre Wallace shoots over the outstretched arms of a Denbigh Patriot. 1 J§ 1 Bethel 54 York 58 Bethel 68 York 64 Bethel 54 Warwick 70 Bethel 51 Warwick 54 Bethel 45 Pembroke 62 Bethel 69 Pembroke 65 Bethel 59 Kecoughtan i 63 Bethel 62 Kecoughtan 67 Bethel 67 James Blair 76 Bethel 81 James Blair 55 Bethel 59 Menchville 64 Bethel 58 Menchville 60 Bethel 45 Hampton 43 Bethel 58 Hampton 40 Bethel 64 Ferguson 71 Bethel 98 Ferguson 61 Bethel 86 Denbigh 75 Bethel 76 Denbigh 51 8-10 Bethel Hits Record 98 Points Against Mariners J. V. Cagers Gain Experience Despite a season record of 6-12, the J.V. bas¬ ketball team gained valuable experience in prepar¬ ing for participation on next year’s varsity team. The players learned of team work, the potential they contain, and the desire to win. As a result, the J.V.’s improved as the season progressed. These players have much to look forward to on next year’s varsity team. 59 Flucker Heads Wrestling Team The Bruin wrestlers improved steadily during the 1971-72 season to finish with a fourth place finish in district competition. The wrestlers com¬ piled an overall record of six wins and five losses. At the start of their season, the Bruin matmen had experienced only one victory in five matches. However, during the latter part of the season, the Bethel matmen won five of their six matches to end with a winning record. Jeff Flucker, along with other Bruin matmen, powered Bethel to a fine finish in both the Eastern regionals and the State wrestling meet. 60 61 Wrestlers Achieve Winning Year Bethel 5 Menchville 45 Bethel 37 Denbigh 18 Bethel 20 Norfolk Academy 21 Bethel 23 York 32 Bethel 18 Ferguson 37 Bethel 30 Kecoughtan 24 Bethel 27 Colonial Heights 26 Bethel 63 James Blair 6 Bethel 33 Pembroke 27 Bethel 36 Warwick 23 Bethel 22 Hampton 30 6-5 62 J. V . Wrestlers Compile 9-2 Slate The Bethel J.V. wrestlers, in recording an im¬ pressive 9-2 won-lost record, found themselves in second place in the Peninsula standings. The po¬ tential and attitude the junior varsity wrestlers displayed throughout the season was cited as a main factor in achieving a winning year. The two losses the J.V.’s experienced came from a total of only nine points. With next year’s varisty team depending on this year’s J.V.’s, it is highly proba¬ ble that Bethel will have some of the best wres¬ tlers in the state next year. The team itself posed several threats to many of the Penin¬ sula area high schools. Individually, Steve Seber, a senior, proved to be the most outstanding swim¬ mer on the 1971-72 swimming team. 64 65 Indoor Track Defeats Hampton 66 In preparing for outdoor track, the indoor track team went against four teams on the Peninsula. Even though winning only one out of the four contests, against arch-rival Hampton, the Bruin runners definitely had a notable improvement. Al¬ though the team had some tough breaks, they were well-above average. Bethel 48 Warwick 70 Bethel 41 Denbigh 77 Bethel 41 Ferguson 75 Bethel 75 Hampton 43 1-3 67 Trackmen Set New Records After dropping its first two decisions, the Bethel outdoor track team came back to win five straight, and as a result, have a very successful season. In the Indian River relays, the Bruin relay team of Calvin Randolph, Nelson Stortz, and the Blueford brothers, Morris and Clyde, set a new state record in the 880 relay with a 1:29.4. The old state record was 1:30.5, set in 1959 and equalled by a different Bethel track team in 1970. In the district meet, Bethel finished in fourth place with a total of twenty points. The J.V.’s certainly can look forward to a fine season on the Varsity level next year. 78 Debra Knight Chosen as Miss Kickoff The 1971-72 school year began with the crowning of Debra Knight as Miss Kick-Off. Ka¬ thy Truman was also a contender for the title. Debra was crowned during intermission at the Kick-Off dance and was presented to the stu¬ dent body at the Bethel-Menchville game. m 79 Joy Langley Reigns at Second Homecoming Joy poses as Homecoming Queen This year, a new technique was used in vot¬ ing for the Homecoming Queen. Tables were set up, and students were urged to vote by putting pennies in a jar. The pennies were counted, and it was announced at the Homecoming game against Kecoughtan that Joy Langley won the title. Dawn King was selected as Miss Bruin. The junior at¬ tendants were Melody Parrish and Valerie Mar¬ shall. Irene Maher and Patsy Bressette repre¬ sented the sophomore class. 80 If You Can’t Ride ’Em , Join ’Em In order to provide the outdoor track team with sweats and tennis shoes, the Bethel High Key Club sponsored a donkey basketball game in the BHS gym. Members of the faculty, SCA exec¬ utive board, and the Key Club participated in the game. Students seemed to enjoy seeing their teachers being thrown off the donkeys. % . § - . , I can’t believe he held that whole thing! 81 This year the marching band made its second annual trip to Winchester to participate in the Shenendoah Apple Blossom Festival with money obtained by several fund raising projects. The concert band, besides holding Christmas and spring concerts, was a part of the combined high school bands of the city of Hampton in a performance for the state IRA convention at the Hampton Roads Coliseum. An addition to our band was the stage band, patterned after the large bands of the past which play contemporary music. 82 Band Raises Money to A ttend Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester The band performs during half-time at the foot¬ ball games. 83 Regional Chorus performs at Bethel ■L ' A l i i 84 mHtt Bruin Singers Highlight Choral Department Under the able direction of Mrs. Barbara Da¬ vis, the Bethel High School chorus presented two fine concerts this year, along with performances at the Sarah Hudgins Center, and at the P.T.A. banquet. Through two money making projects, the chorus was able to purchase much needed stereo equipment. The choral department also had the privilege of hosting the 1972 Regional Chorus, which involved a great deal of preparation and hard work by many chorus members. An addition to this year’s choral department was a mixed ensemble, the Bruin Singers. This group performed at numerous hospitals and nurs¬ ing homes, and brought added attention and praise to this outstanding department. 85 The school year 1971-72 has been a busy and successful one for Bethel’s Drama Department. Tremendous participation on the part of all the students enabled the Thespians and Garricks to put on three great shows. The year opened with the appearance of a new drama teacher, Mrs. Eaton. Aided by Mr. Chet Luck, she immediately began work on our fall production, The Impossible Years. This show had immense success, and was rapidly followed by the Mortician’s Gallery, a series of chilling one-acts, and Cactus Flower, a love comedy. Much hard work went into all these productions, and every member of the Drama Department is glad to have been a part of all the work; all in all, “it was a very good year.” 86 Drama Club Draws Record-Breaking Crowds Mike Cowan does an excellent make-up job on Paul Welch. 87 Just My Imagination On the night of April 22, the traditional Ring Dance was given to the Juniors by the Sophomore class. Accentuating the candlelit tables, the deco¬ rations were done in green and gold with touches of spring pastels. The theme, “Just My Imagina¬ tion,” was played by Slapwater Jack. Irene Maher and Patty Irby headed the Ring Dance commit¬ tee. ■m. i .msp: hhh Dancing is so much fun . . . 88 Hey Mister, how should I smile? 89 For some reason, I’ve just got to have a pickle l -k 90 Senior Luau Not Spoiled by Rain Senior tradition continued as the Luau was held at Gosnold’s Hope Park. Music was provided by the Soul Phonics, and everyone was urged to dress in Hawaiian attire. The Luau gave the Sen¬ iors a chance to be with friends before parting af¬ ter graduation. 91 Seniors Cite Prom as Being “Wonderful 3 All Seniors will agree that the theme for the Prom, “Some Kind of Wonderful” was perfect. Af¬ ter signing the guest book, the couples entered the naturally elegant Rodef Sholom Temple where they could dance, have refreshments, or just relax. The Five O’Clock Shadow provided a wide variety of music which allowed everyone to express themselves and have a good time. After the Prom, most of the seniors and their dates went to parties or the beach. Very definitely, the Prom was wonderful. Lu Ann Cates was in charge of all Prom prepara¬ tions. 92 93 mm SC tT% Ills I %;fe: 95 96 “A Day in the Life of Bethel ” “A day in the Life of Bethel,” was the theme for the Senior Class Night. In a series of skits, the students relived the past three years at Bethel. The Senior Hall of Fame was presented at the be¬ ginning of the program as many of the superla¬ tives “dressed according to their title.” “Bugs, Roaches, and Fleas!” 97 98 Baccalaureate Inspires Seniors Rev. A. P. Bailey speaks at Baccalaureate This year Baccalaureate was again held in the Coliseum with all of the Hampton high schools. Although most Bethel seniors would have prefer¬ red the service at school, they were perhaps in¬ spired by the words of Reverend A. P. Bailey. The combined A’Cappella choirs sang as the graduates marched into the Coliseum, and again as they left. This special service was a moment to remember for all seniors. 99 Class of ’72, Leaders of Tomorrow 100 To the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance,” most of the seniors marched into the Coliseum a little tearful and very nervous. President of the Senior Class, Curtis Allison, thanked the administration for their dedicated efforts, and in behalf of the Class of ’72, presented to Mr. Gilligan, a portrait of Mr. Montague, Bethel’s first principal. Class speakers Sheila Batts and Richard Rhyne reminded every graduate of the past and urged them to look towards the future. The past twelve long years of work culminated as Mr. Gilligan awarded the diplomas. And with a great sense of pride, the Class of 1972 sang their Alma Mater for the last time. 101 102 Hall of Fame Adds to Class Night MOST ATHLETIC Morris Blueford Maria Malerba MOST TALENTED Marilyn Bowen Steve Dilley (not pictured) BEST ALL AROUND Jenny Schroeder David Hutcheson (not pictured) 103 BEST DANCER Regina Carpini Sam Wilson (not pictured) BEST DRESSED Eddie Irby Kathy Hendricks BEST LOOKING Kathy Truman (not pictured) Rick Carsia WITTIEST Jeffy Carpini Mike Brewer FRIENDLIEST Susie Koepp Martin Whitley CUTEST Renee Freeman Ricky Briggs 104 MOST SCHOOL SPIRITED Debbie Auman John Spring MOST INTELLECTUAL Rosemary Tirinnanzi David Hill MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Jenny Turpin Francis McDonald MOST POPULAR Debbie Ashe Romeo Gillis BIGGEST FLIRT Daresa Beasley Jeff Speigel (not pictured) MOST TALKATIVE Cindy Schreck John Mitchell (not pictured) QUIETEST Rosemary Judy David Bristow 105 Faculty Strives to Broaden Horizons 106 Contrary to popular belief, the faculty and administration at Bethel are human. Editor-in-Chief Annual Business Staff Editors of Ursa Major Class Officers SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: First Row: Curtis Allison, Pres.; Rick Carsia, V.P.; Susie Koepp, Sec.; Karen Shackelford, Treasurer. 2nd Row: Sponsors, Mr. Hairfield, Mrs. Ritt, Mr. Clawson. The tradition that was established by the class officers of 1970 was continued this year by the class officers of 1972. The first senior class found that planning their own prom conflicted with the hectic graduation preparations at the end of the year. Also, if each class planned its own ring dance and prom the class would not be able to pay for the necessary graduation expenses. To cope with these problems, class activities were set up in this way: the sophomore class would plan the Junior Class Ring Dance, and the juniors would in turn plan the Senior Prom. In this way the new sophomore class would be able to take part in school activities and the juniors could look forward to their senior year knowing that one less burden would be lifted from graduation. This sys¬ tem worked effectively this year and the Ring Dance and Prom were successful. 202 Continue School Tradition JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: 1st Row: Jean Hill, Treas.; Kathy Neel, Sec.; Sandy Massie, SCA Rep. 2nd Row: Miss Miller, Spon¬ sor; Chris Chatman, Pres.; Mr. Tylavsky, Sponsor; LuAnn Cates, V.P., Miss Hankavich, Sponsor. WE’VE LAUNCHED MORE THAN 500 SHIPS. But wait ' til you see our encore. When we started out in 1886, we were just a smal ship repair yard. We named the company Newport News. Because we were proud to be doir Today we’re the largest shipyard in the world. And we’re still proud to call , ourselves Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Because a lot of the people who helped put us where we are today come from right here on the Virginia Peninsula. . With their help, Newport News has become an important asset to our community, our state and our nation. Sure, launching over 500 ships in a little more than 80 years is a pretty impressive achievement. But we ' re not standing still for that. We’re constantly looking to the future. And since our acquisition by Tenneco Inc. we ' ve got an even greater encore lined up for our employees and the community. Queen St. Hampton, Virginia 23366 223 Editor’s Comment After a long year of hard work, I finally feel as though my efforts were not futile. Although this was my first year on the annual staff, I have learned quite a lot, and with the co-operation of many others, the fourth edition of the Ursa Major was published. I would like to thank the entire staff for putting up with all my mistakes, especially Mr. Moser, who never once lost his temper. Without his help and guid¬ ance, I never would have made it. Special thanks needs to be made to the following people: To Miss Katherine Biles for her Latin translation of the Ursa Major legend. To Dan DeFalco for his consideration and guidance.
