Bus Drivers: Danny Rollins, Philip Mann¬ ing, Harvey Lewis, Roger Everett. Don ' t just stand there, girls, Yell! Drifting and Dreaming 2 Is this concentration? Our man Friday. 3 Mr. oftn C. Cougfihn In this age of scientific advancement, this challenging age of space endeavor, Each school searches desperately for, but rarely finds, a scientific teacher, learned and clever. However, in our school, we are fortunate indeed, and we feel ourselves truly blessed. Because in the field of science, we have instruction ranked with the best. Therefore, we, the Seniors, have the desire to give honor where honor should be. So to Mr. John Coughlan, our teacher and our friend, with heartfelt sincerity. We dedicate our yearbook, The Bethel Horizon, for the year nineteen hundred and sixty-one, For he ' s a person who has tirelessly and faithfully striven to see that his duty is well done. Not only in the immediate present, but far, far in the future, we will see, How much Mr. Coughlan ' s work has meant and will mean to you and to me. So in a spirit of thanksgiving for the zeal of this truly dedicated man -- We are giving to him the best tribute we know, in the best way we can. 4 Administration Mr. W. C. We have been very lazy to let twelve years elapse. So, now we must catch up and tell you all that has happened. We first entered Bethel Elementary School in August, 1949. We all had a lost feeling and were very frightened to have to leave our parents. Our teacher, Mrs. Adams, helped us settle down soon, though. But she had to break rulers and penc ils over our little heads to make us realize it. Finally we became accustomed to the schedule we had to follow. The year quickly passed by, and we entered the second grade. Mrs. Vann was our teacher, and she taught us how to write. We advanced to the third grade the following year, and Mrs. Thomas helped us with many things we had to know to advance further. The fourth and fifth grades were over before we knew it. With our teachers, Mrs. McWhorter and Miss Warren pushing us to a better goal, we were soon in the sixth grade. Mrs. Jackson was our sixth grade teacher, and she made us realize that we were really going to take a big step to the seventh grade. We had our first man teacher when we entered the seventh grade. Mr. Berry was very helpful to us in many things. He took us on a trip to Cherry Point that year. The eighth grade was a very new experience to all of us. We were in the high school build¬ ing but were not considered in high school. We took a trip to Raleigh that year. Our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Highsmith, made it clear to us that school would be quiet different and would also be a challenge from then on. We felt a little grown though, because we h ad more than one teacher. We had Mrs. Latham for history and Mr. Nicholson for science. Entering high school was a thrill, but a frightening feeling. Will we ever forget being told to ALWAYS to look up to the SENIORS! Finally we became accustomed to almost everything as a freshman. Our homeroom teacher, Mr. Nicholson, told us of our many teachers that we would have that year: Mrs. Watson, Mrs! Carson, Mrs. Latham, Mrs. Heath, Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Highsmith, Mr. Nicholson, Mr. Cough- lan, Mr. Dewar, and last, but not least, our principal, Mr. Latham. We would go out our seper - ate ways, and each of them would teach us a different subject. Our sophomore year was very exciting because our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Carson, helped us order our class rings. This made us realize more that we were closer to our last year in Bethel High School. Time passed and we moved in our junior year. Perhaps this was our best year; at-least, it was the fullest-so many, many things to do. Mrs. Latham, our homeroom teacher, helped us to increase our treasury by letting us sell magazines and fruit cakes. We raised very much money to help put on our Junior-Senior Prom. When time came to decorate for our prom, many hours were spent in the gym. The finish was wonderful, our theme was Oriental Gardens and it was very much a success and also very beautiful. Dear Diary, we have finally made it; we are SENIORS . It was an exciting feeling at first- being on top and looking down. Working on the annual has also been wonderful for us, and get¬ ting college papers have been fun, too. It still is exciting, this feeling, but, now we are begin¬ ning to see the multitude of things that we must leave behind, and be sorry that we have not made better use of those many opportunities that have come our way. That is the past though, and we must look toward the future. We ' ve told you so many things, Dear Diary. Some of them are sad, some exciting, and some just ordinary events, but all e xp e r i e n c e s that the Senior Class has had over twelve long, yet much too, too short and truly happy years, have been wonderful ones. Our diary comes to close at the end of this year; but adiary is to be reread to present treasured memories. So in you we always have access to those wonderful years. Carl Cullifer Cl ass Poem THE HORIZON The dawn came early As we first began school. We learned of many subjects And of the Golden Rule. Even still, we ' ve had fun As we ' ve passed along the way. Now the sun ' s glow is rosy As we near the close of day. Those years were short, And quickly they flew, The sun rising higher As tho ' o ' er morning dew. We entered high school With great anticipation. The sun shone warm and bright As we faced great tribulation. The sky becomes faded And memories are dear. B. H. S. will ever live In our hearts, very near. But all is not lost; For with the setting sun Comes a promise of a new day And a glorious new horizon. 2 ) ior C ass off icers Room Representatives, Joe Anne Whitehurst, Jimmy Lewis; Treasurer, Joan Garrenton; President, Gene Carson; Vice-President, Grace James; Secretary, Don Dewar Gene Carson 22 junior Class Herman Daniels Don Dewar Joan Garrenton Grace James Jimmy Johnson Jimmy Keel Jimmy Lewis Carolyn Manning 23 junior Class Jackie Pettigrew Perry Rogers Paul Smith Lula Whichard Jo Anne Whitehurst Sandra Whitehurst Brenda Williams Marvin Wynne 24 Sophomore Class of lie evs Secretary, Bobby Briley; President, Harry Latham; Representatives, Mary Chesson and Sammy Dewar; Vice-President, Jesse Gray Thomas; Treasurer, Joe Hunnicut Iris Briley Stewart Briley Mary Chesson Peggy Coppock Sopfiomore Linda Davenport Micky Davis Sammy Dewar Faye Griffin Joe Hunnicutt Ann Jackson Nancy James Harry Latham Frances Marlowe 26 Sophomore Class Lynda Martin Sandra Moody Freddie Mozingo Bobby Purvis Wayne Taylor Jessie Thomas Lester Warren Jack Weathersby David Whitehurst 27 3res(unan Class Offic ers Front Row: Ginger Young, Room Representative; Carol Manning, Secretary; Patsy Jo Gurganus, Treasurer; Back: Glen Worsley, Vice-President; Tex Everett, President; Neil Whitehurst, Room Representative Betty Lu Andrews Tommy Bailey Buck Briley Henry Briley Janet Everett Ronald Everett 28 Alvin Griffin Patsy Joe Gurganus Anne Hathaway Harry Jefcoat Jimmy Keel Mable Keel Barbara Lassiter Edna Malloy 29 Joyce Stocks Woody Taylor Tay Thomas Mary Sue Watson Jo Ann Whaley Neil Whitehurst Vernon Williams Glen Worsley Ginger Young Delmas Ayers 30 Betty Sue Manning Carol Manning Willard Manning Gerald McGowan Lou Ander McKinney Kenneth Morris 31 On Memory Of Miss Frances Mayo Warren She will live forever in the hearts and the minds of the many, both young and old, whose lives she has touched.
