CLASS HISTORY A group of fifty-eight youngsters began school in the fall of 1943, and I ' m sure that each pupil of the original fifty-eight remembers Miss Sue Johnson, who started the present senior class of 1955 on its journey of knowledge. Miss Mary Ferebee furthered our education when we climbed a step higher to the second grade. Mrs. Rosalie Francis began teaching us in the third grade, but she left school to join her husband, who was in service, and Mrs. A. L. Whitley finished our third grade education. We also were taught by two different teachers in the fourth grade— Mrs. Frances Butterworth and Miss Edmondson. Miss Frances Warren and Mrs. Alva Jackson taught us as we journeyed through the fifth and sixth grades. As a conclusion to our stay at the elementary school, we were taught by Mrs. A. M. McWhorter. We welcomed thirteen new students from Mayo School as we entered the eighth grade. Mrs. Jane Highsmith was our homeroom teacher that year, and she certainly did prepare us well for the change to high school. We enjoyed a class trip to Raleigh that year. After a vear in the high school building, we were ready to become freshmen in high school, and I guess we were all smiles on that May night when we received our diplomas and graduated from gram- mar school. High school at last! We thought Mr. Dan Nicholson was our homeroom teacher that first year, and we shall never forget that surprise party he gave us when his wife cooked all those specialties— candy apples, mints, and pull candy! In the tenth grade our homeroom teacher was Mrs. Lucille Mayo. We were all thrilled to choose our class rings that year. When we became juniors we began to use our own judgment more. We all went our separate ways. Most of us had taken two years of home economics and agriculture, subjects which were taught to us by Miss Billie Perry, Mrs. Lucille Mayo, and Mr. Sam Dewar respectively. Now some of us had planned a future which required us to take business courses, and our guidance in this field came from Mrs. Annie Chappell and Mrs. Thadys Dewar. We shall never forget all the teachers who helped us attain our goals in high school. Other than those already named, we wish to mention Mrs. Mary Weeks, Mr. Gene Hart, Mr. Alton Gray, and of course, Mr. W. C. Latham. Our junior year was really great! Mrs. W. C. Latham, our homeroom teacher, helped us plan and make possible the junior-senior banquet and dance, which everyone looks forward to with hopes and when it ' s in the past is looked backward to with memories. During our junior year, we joined the seniors on a Washington trip. We have finally climbed to our senior year, and Miss Janice Albritton, our homeroom teacher, has helped us a great deal on our chief undertaking— the annual. We shall always remember the ol ' school days. Our youth we can have but today; We may always find time to grow old. The school years do not seem as dear and carefree as they will when we are older for In youth we learn; in age we understand. CLASS POEM We build the ladder by which we climb To heights in our careers. And tho ' our graduation day has come, We face it without doubts or fears. At last we ' ve come to this evening With satisfaction in each heart; But when we think of the years gone by. We are sad, for soon we must depart. Now that the long awaited time Is drawing close and nigh. We don ' t want to bid farewell To dear old Bethel High. Our memories flash back To our friends so true. And to the most wonderful times We ever knew. To our parents, to our teachers, and To our principal, we want to express Our many thanks and appreciation For giving us your best. Through fun and laughter, hardship. And sometimes through strife. You have guided us and helped us In the most memorable years of our life. Although we long to linger. The future bids us go. And as we are leaving. Our hearts become filled with woe For to each of us, the fact dawns Definitely and clear That these happy days, these Golden years have been most dear. All too soon, we, the class of 1955, Will have to depart. And each on the career of his choice Must make a start. For some the way may be rugged, For others, calm and still But, classmates, we can overcome all. If we climb with determination and will.
