CLASS HISTORY A group of fifty-eight youngsters began school in the fall of 1943, and I ' m sure that each pupil of the original fifty-eight remembers Miss Sue Johnson, who started the present senior class of 1955 on its journey of knowledge. Miss Mary Ferebee furthered our education when we climbed a step higher to the second grade. Mrs. Rosalie Francis began teaching us in the third grade, but she left school to join her husband, who was in service, and Mrs. A. L. Whitley finished our third grade education. We also were taught by two different teachers in the fourth grade— Mrs. Frances Butterworth and Miss Edmondson. Miss Frances Warren and Mrs. Alva Jackson taught us as we journeyed through the fifth and sixth grades. As a conclusion to our stay at the elementary school, we were taught by Mrs. A. M. McWhorter. We welcomed thirteen new students from Mayo School as we entered the eighth grade. Mrs. Jane Highsmith was our homeroom teacher that year, and she certainly did prepare us well for the change to high school. We enjoyed a class trip to Raleigh that year. After a vear in the high school building, we were ready to become freshmen in high school, and I guess we were all smiles on that May night when we received our diplomas and graduated from gram- mar school. High school at last! We thought Mr. Dan Nicholson was our homeroom teacher that first year, and we shall never forget that surprise party he gave us when his wife cooked all those specialties— candy apples, mints, and pull candy! In the tenth grade our homeroom teacher was Mrs. Lucille Mayo. We were all thrilled to choose our class rings that year. When we became juniors we began to use our own judgment more. We all went our separate ways. Most of us had taken two years of home economics and agriculture, subjects which were taught to us by Miss Billie Perry, Mrs. Lucille Mayo, and Mr. Sam Dewar respectively. Now some of us had planned a future which required us to take business courses, and our guidance in this field came from Mrs. Annie Chappell and Mrs. Thadys Dewar. We shall never forget all the teachers who helped us attain our goals in high school. Other than those already named, we wish to mention Mrs. Mary Weeks, Mr. Gene Hart, Mr. Alton Gray, and of course, Mr. W. C. Latham. Our junior year was really great! Mrs. W. C. Latham, our homeroom teacher, helped us plan and make possible the junior-senior banquet and dance, which everyone looks forward to with hopes and when it ' s in the past is looked backward to with memories. During our junior year, we joined the seniors on a Washington trip. We have finally climbed to our senior year, and Miss Janice Albritton, our homeroom teacher, has helped us a great deal on our chief undertaking— the annual. We shall always remember the ol ' school days. Our youth we can have but today; We may always find time to grow old. The school years do not seem as dear and carefree as they will when we are older for In youth we learn; in age we understand. Testator: Marshall Tetterton CLASS POEM We build the ladder by which we climb To heights in our careers. And tho ' our graduation day has come, We face it without doubts or fears. At last we ' ve come to this evening With satisfaction in each heart; But when we think of the years gone by. We are sad, for soon we must depart. Now that the long awaited time Is drawing close and nigh. We don ' t want to bid farewell To dear old Bethel High. Our memories flash back To our friends so true. And to the most wonderful times We ever knew. To our parents, to our teachers, and To our principal, we want to express Our many thanks and appreciation For giving us your best. Through fun and laughter, hardship. And sometimes through strife. You have guided us and helped us In the most memorable years of our life. Although we long to linger. The future bids us go. And as we are leaving. Our hearts become filled with woe For to each of us, the fact dawns Definitely and clear That these happy days, these Golden years have been most dear. All too soon, we, the class of 1955, Will have to depart. And each on the career of his choice Must make a start. For some the way may be rugged, For others, calm and still But, classmates, we can overcome all. If we climb with determination and will. Class Poets-- Barbara Whichard Janice Hux Class Flower Class Colors Red Rose Red and White CLASS PROPHECY In the fall of 1965, after being married seven years to a wonderful husband and being gifted with three loving children, I found myself all alone in my sweet little home. Tired from a day ' s work of house cleaning, I fell to the bed at once. I tried to free my mind of all thoughts, but one thought crept into my mind. I began to wonder where my old classmates of 1955 were and how they were thriving. Drifting into a dream, I saw Lawrence Cobb, now the owner of one of the largest Ford dealerships in the state. Lawrence had Bobby White- hurst as his associate. Both of these boys have always been Ford lovers. Mary Jo Wynne has continued the development of her writing talent. Since graduating from College with a major in journalism she has been reporter for an outstanding newspaper in Eastern N. C. Her spare time is devoted to writing what, she hopes, will be a best-seller. One of her recently published newspaper articles concerned James Davenport and Dalton Briley. These boys entered the army shortly after their graduation from high school and have decided to make a career of it. Another former classmate also entered the armed forces. Mary Frances Whitehurst entered service shortly after reaching her 18th birthday. Her work in the commercial department at Bethel High School was not in vain, because she now has an office job for Uncle Sam. The class of 1955 certainly contributed its share to the Agricultural program of our state. From our ranks came a number of good farmers. Among these are Herbert Briley, Carlton Keel, Jame Gurganus, David Weathersby, and J. B. Briley. Their interest in high school agriculture classes seems to have carried over into their choice of an occupation. Barbara Whichard also was influenced in a like manner by her classes in home ec. and her work with the 4-H Club. She is now a 4-H Club leader who is trying to train young girls to become worthwhile citizens. Sherwood White, who is now manager of a large colonial store, got his start as a helper in one of the grocery stores in Bethel. Working with Sherwood as a cashier is Anna White. By the way, Sherwood serves as captain of the town basketball team on his nights off. Speaking of basketball, Dan Anderson, the short guard for Bethel in the high school days, is now playing professional basketball. Who knows, he may soon be All Pro! The senior class of ' 55 also produced a fashion designer. After two years of home economics and a four-year college course in home economics with emphasis on designing, Shirley Anne H ardy opened her fashion shop. You may even be wearing one of her original designs. Becky Keel, who is the chief model for the Hardy fashions, has done a lot to ensure the success of the business. A regular customer of Shirley Anne ' s is Mary Anne Manning, who is now one of the best-dressed teachers. Mary Anne, who always loved small children, is now very happily teaching them the three R ' s. Business education is quite a big field, and I can see some of my classmates have entered it. Billy Staton has become a success as manager of the Business Association in Newport. Lee Knox secured a secretarial position with Billy after completing a business course. Another classmate in the business field is Shirley Jean Whitehurst, who acts as secretary-receptionist for a resident physician in a big hospital. And, oh yes, Janice Hux and Mary Whitley are registered nurses in the same hospital. They have always had the desire to serve people through their nursing services. Then, of course, there are those who prefer a home and a family to a career. Ann Riddick and Shirley Wilson fall into this category. Wedding bells rang for them shortly after they received their diplomas. They are now very efficient housekeepers. A lot of new homes have been built in and around Bethel since 1955, and Marshall Tetterton has had a lot to do about that. He attended State College, but came back to Bethel to help his father in the carpentry business. He got a lot of experience in that kind of work before entering college. Carolyn Cooper, the cutest in our class and also a part time accompanist for the school glee club, can now be seen and heard weekly over many television stations as she exhibits her talents at the piano. Now my dream has exposed the whereabouts of the 28 seniors of 1955. Each one seems to be prospering in his chosen profession or occupation. I wonder if they ever think back to our Junior-Senior Banquet and the wonderful time we had amid the moonlight and roses. I would love to have a party and see them all together again. Maybe I will. Brr--rrr— There goes the alarm clock ending a beautiful dream. Now I must prepare breakfast for my family, but I wonder, could my dream be a reality? Prophetess: Patricia Whitehurst. Class Song (Adapted by Seniors) When I Grow Too Old To Dream When we grow too old to dream We ' ll have these years to remember. Within the walls of Bethel High Where joyous hours filled each day. We ' ll each go our way, and so let us part, For when we grow too old to dream Those days will live in our hearts. It ' s time to say goodbye to friends and teachers dear. With the dawn the years are gone But those memories still linger on. When we grow too old to dream Our youth we ' ll have to remember. And then we ' ll pause and count the joys we shared in dear Bethel High We ' ll have our share of joys and disappointments too. But when we grow too old to dream Those memories we shall renew. So hold high your head when we do depart. For when we grow too old to dream Those years will strengthen our hearts. The Bethel girls this year have had their work cut out for them: as defending champions, they have tried to live up to the reputation established by last years ' team. So far this year they have an enviable record of 17 wins and 5 losses. They have beaten every team in Pitt County except Farmville which seems to have a jinx on them. Several girls are playing their last year for Bethel. Those who will be greatly missed and not easily replaced are: Mary Jo, Ann Riddick, Mary Frances, Shirley Anne and Anna. Mary Jo ' s remarkable play has earned her a lasting stay in the minds of all who have watched her. She is the kind of player every coach dreams of having but seldom finds. The strong defensive work of Ann Riddick will be sorely missed next year. Ann has led a strong defense that has accounted for many of our wins. It is going to be hard to replace a fine player like Ann. Mary Fran- ces has continued this year to fill in at any position needed and has played them all well. She has scored when we needed points and has played guard when our defense was shaky. It will be a difficult task replacing a versatile player like Mary Frances. Shirley Anne has really developed into a genuine scoring threat this year. As our pivot player in the center she has become a 20 point player in a number of games. Anna, while not playing all this year, has brought the strength we needed to our defense. Je nny, although not a senior has played very advanced basketball all this year. Her fine rebounding has helped the team greatly. Several of the newer girls have helped us because our degree of suc- cess this year has been due to the effort of all the team. Janet Taylor, a first year for- ward, shows many indications of becoming a real scoring threat. Her accuracy from the free throw line has been most helpful this year. The others- -Ann Briley, Essie White- hurst, Vera Warren and Aldine White- -have done the things expected of them. They have practiced faithfully and have given their best when it was needed. Many new face s will have to come out for practice next year if the Bethel girls ' team is to remain the threat it has been in recent years. BOYS ' BASKETBALL Kneeling, left to right: Bob Jack Manning, Ramon Latham, Dalton Briley, Willard White, Carlton Keel, Bryan Latham, Sherwood White, Charles Ward, Vance Taylor, Danny Martin, Dan Anderson, Durwood White. Standing: John Edward Whitehurst, Manager; Mr. Sam Dewar, Assistant Coach; Mr. Walter Latham, Coach; Wade Ward, Score Keeper. Y-ou cannot lose four of your starting five, such as Michael House, Bill Latham, B. B. Tetterton, and Larry Tetterton, and not miss them when the next season rolls around. We found ourselves short on height when we began practice in October, 1954. It was true that we had plenty of boys presumably anxious to play but all were up from the Junior Varsity with the exception of Bryan Latham, Carlton Keel, Dan Anderson, Sherwood White, and Marshall Tetterton. Bryan and Carlton had alternated at forward the season before. Sher- wood, Marshall, and Dan had seen some action as substitutes. New men up from the Jay- vees were: Durwood White, Ramon Latham, Danny Martin, Vance Taylor, Willard White, Charles Ward, and Dalton Bebo Briley. Bob Jack Manning moved to Bethel from Wil- mington and has proved to be the first boy in the history of the school to come to Bethel and make the Varsity. After practicing one month three times each week, we opened in Grimesland on Nov. 12. We lost 55 to 44. Since that time we have won 15 while losing 4, giving us a 15-5 rec- ord to date (2-3-55). No team has beaten us twice and the boys are steadily improving. The guards--Dan Anderson, Bob Jack Manning, Bebo Briley, and Durwood White--have been playing a good floor game. Dan is especially good on the long sets. Bob Jack on drives and Bryan Latham has an average of 11.5 points per game and is the best re- bounder we have. Vance Taylor has an average of 11.8 points for limited service in 17 games. Carlton is a dependable performer. He likes to play ball and hustles. Our cen- ters--Sherwood and Charles--have been doing well considering their limited experience. 1. Debutantes 2. Make yourself comfortable 3. Young and tender 4. Barefoot contessa? ?? ? 5.
