' . 4 Y JUNIOR CLASS NEWS On September 9, 1953, eighty-six Iuniors were enrolled and soon back in the harness At the first class meeting the following officers were electedl President, Gene Ketter, Vice-President, Walt Leighg Secretary, Mickey Cheeseman, Treas- urer, Marilyn Larson: Sergeant-at-Arms, lim Gardner, and A.S.B.R., Thorne Tibbitts. Robert Fincham was class adviser. September not only brought the re-opening of school but the return of football season. Seven boys from the lunior Class earned positions on the team. They were: Gene Ketter, Gene Curbow, Gene Williams, Dave Rich, Allen Michener, Iohn Schiemer, and Thorne Tibbitts. When semester grades were issued twenty- three Iuniors made the honor roll. These students were: Ioy Barsotti, Barbara Burrington, Oma Lee Clark, Annette Dahlberg, Vivian Frame, Mary Lou Iupiter, Gene Ketter, Ioanne Kidd, Dick Kraiger, Marilyn Larson, Laura Lathrom, Anna Maye Lian, Audrey Lindberg, Teddy Ann Otter- stad, Beverly Smith, Don Stave, Delmar Taylor, Thorne Tibbitts, and Gene Williams. Nine Iunior Class members made the basket- ball squad. Dave Rich was captain of the team. His fellow classmates who saw action were: Walt Leigh, Gene Ketter, Larry Symmons, Thorne Tib- bitts, Don Stave, Gene Williams, Steve Gohr, and Gerald Wallace. Another big event of the year was the Iunior Prom held April 9. Beautiful Melody Lane was the theme. Reigning over the evening of festivi- ties were King and Queen Terry Iohnson and Merrillus Gehring. Their attendants were Blanche Bryson, Wally Thompson, Cathy Holt, and Iim Gardner. Barbara Burrington and Dave Rich were co-chairmen of the event. Ioy Barsotti, soloist for the evening, sang Let's Take an Old Fashioned Walk. The auditorium was decorated with contrasting green streamers with an archway for the entering couples. Park benches lined the dance floor and a swing was used as the throng for the king and queen. Old fashioned lamp posts and a kissing rock completed the decorations of the auditorium. Winston Bakers orchestra, seated on the stage in a scene of musical notes and a silhouette of an old-fashioned couple, played for the evening. Ierry McCullough, Walt Leigh, Gene Ketter, and Gene Curbow earned positions on the base- ball team. All in all, the Iunior Class completed an ex- citing and active year and are anxiously antici- pating their Senior year. IUNIORS Of-f1C6TSv'SId7IdiT1jjf T. Tibbitts. M. Cheesenian. M. Larson. I. SENIOR CLASS PLAY- THE DIVINE FLORA With the usual backstage rush and commotion the curtains parted and the Senior Class presented their annual play April 23 to the general public. Two matinees were given for students previous to the main performance. The play was directed by William O'Ccnnell, with Robert Minnitti as assistant director. THE DIVINE FLORA, a threefact comedy, written by Florence Ryerson and Colin Clements, had a cast of twenty-seven amateur actors and actresses from the Senior Class. Flora, played by Ianet Mattsen, is a lonesome, homely girl reared by her grandmother until she visits the Pryors for the summer. While there she is transformed into a beautiful belle, the envy of all the boys and girls, by Randy tGary Allisonl and Buzz tCharles Brandfasl, two active teenagers. Mr. and Mrs. Pryor tPaul Lambertsen and Shirley Beamanl put up with teenage friends of Randy and Sharon all summer with periods of joy and others of disgust. Sharon Pryor floyce Love- landl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pryor, has invited Tex Arlen fGary Andersonl, a crooner from Texas to spend the summer at their summer cottage. Tex is the envy of all the girls at the resort and a headache to Mr. and Mrs. Pryor. When Mr, Dean IGordon Dahlbergl, Flora's father, arrives to take her home he is mistakenly shoved into the lake by Mr. Pryor who takes him for a newspaper reporter. When Mr. Dean finds Flora miss- ing he is furious and believes she has eloped with Tex. Later he learns that they had flown to New York to see him. When they return, Tex announces his engage- ment to Daphne CKay Fowlerl. The old saying, All is well that ends well, may well be applied to Tl-IE DIVINE FLORA. Others appearing in the cast were Iohn Kerr, Hal, Gail Kerstetter, Winnie, Vir- ginia Rearden, Boops, Bill Draper, Stu Morgan, Evelyn I-Iansch, Kit Olmstead, Ed Wright, Bob, Dick Allen, Wayne, Pam Fix, Polly, Beverly Hague, Helena, Carol Op' sahl, Marvelle, Dennis Modahl, Mr. Dugan, Leah Averill, Susie, and Maxine Byrd, Bella. Th girls appearing were Ianet George, Kathy Corbett, Diane Lambkin, Clara Byrd, and Karen Gunderson. Much credit is also given to the students working behind the scenes. Roy Goodiri acted as student director and worked with Ray Hinote as stage managers. Leonard Goodwin served as technician. Very capable prompters, who are always needed, were Luanne Kleiven and Margie Storlie. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Seated: E. Hansch. S. Beaman. P. Lamhcrtscn J. Loveland, standing, G. Dahlherg. G. Anti son. That is what the class had been waiting for and the moments had come at last The lunior Class Play was under way. lT'S GREAT TO BE CHAZY was the title of the play written bv Donald Payton, and directed by William O'Connell, assisted by Roy Goodin, student director. The play was presented to the general public on the evenings of February 25 and 26. Betty Lou Maxwell fMickey Cheesemanl and her best pal, Bernadine fBarbara Burringtonl, have set out to conquer the world with their beautiful poetry. Wilbur Maxwell CPete Mattsenl and his bosom pal, Hercules Nelson fDick Kraigerl were two fourteen year old mischievious boys. The highlight of the play came when Wilbur and Hercules transform into magicions who set the scene for the capture of the thiefs, Lcuie tWayne Ottol and his wife, Gertrude tKitty Calchinal. Mr. Maxwell fVic Beckerl is the nervous and stern father of Wilbur, Betty Lou, and Connie. Connie fleanne Kerstetterl is deeply in love with Grover lennings tRene McAllisterl, a college student. Mrs, Maxwell tCathy Holtl is a lady of society who hires Gladys floanne Kidd? as a maid because of Mrs. l. lasper lenningis flfunice McGeel. Mrs. lennings is societys number one matron and Mrs. Maxwell just had to hire a maid to keep up with the lones and impress Mrs. lennings. Aunt Mary COma Lee Clarkl is a very talkative old-fashioned lady who adds a great deal of humor to the plot. lerry Iohnson plays the part of I. C. Mallory, Mr, Maxwells boss. The action begins when I. C. gave Mr. Maxwell a promotion and a contract for five thousand dollars. fx I Betty Lou sends a letter to the wrong party f and Louie and Gertrude find out about the five thousand dollars. They enter the Maxwell home to rob the safe of the money. Clara Smith tLovena Hose Mc- Nicholasl arrests Louie and Gertrude and takes them to headquarters. After the excitement of the robbery has died down, Connie's hope of having a date to a special college dance with Grover is fulfilled. A number of other Iuniors also helped to make the production possible by work- ing on the stage crew, properties, pro- grams, make-up, costume, and other com- mittees to make the play a success, IUNIOR CLASS PLAY Seated: P. BRAVES TAKE SECOND PLACE IN FOOTBALL Bethel had another good football team this year, but although the Braves took the champion- ship in 1950 they could get no farther than second place. This years teain, as far as Coach Ed Niehl was cfiicerned, was one of the best, if not the best toem, that he had ever coached. The boys had plenty of spirit at practice as well as at the games, They played not only for the glory of being in football uniform, but for the love of the cyeine and desire to be a championship team. There were a few jokers on the team but it would have been hard to get along without them. Theres nothing better to break the tension in a tough game than a couple of guys joking and cughing, especially when the chips are down and they're in there fighting as hard as anyone. The Braves had a good offensive, as well as a defensive team this year. They went through ieven games without being scored against and scored at least two touchdowns per game. The breaks happened to be against them in the two toughest games They tied one and lost the most important game and championship. There was good material in this years team. The defensive line was the best in the league, with a good end, lohn Kerr, two tough tackles, Felix Brodigan and Terry Plumb, and a rugged guard, Terry McDonald. Other defensive linef ziien were far from being lilly pushers. Gary Allison was a tough line backer, along with Allen lifichener. The offiensive team was made up of the two ends, Felix Brodigan and Dave Rich, guards, Terry McDonald and Thorne Tibbitts, and center, Roger Cameron. ln the tackle posi- tions were Terry Plumb and Iohn Schierner, The backfield was made up of Gene Ketter, a real heads up ball player at quarterback, Iohn Kerr as fullback, Gene Curbow as left halfback and Gary Allison as right half, all being able to carry the pigskin across the goal any time Gary Allison and lohn Kerr were elected co- captains. Gary was chosen by the team to re- ceive the Inspirational Award. The traditional Kings Axe game was played September l8 at Eatonville High School against the Cruisers. Curbow, Allison, and Brodigan scored for the Braves to give them an l8-U win to retain the axe. The Braves won their first league game of the season by defeating Orting I4-U on September 25 at Orting. Allison and Ketter scored for the Braves. Vashon traveled to Bethel on October 2. Ket- ter and Brodigan each made a touchdown and Allison scored twice. Brodigan caught a pass for one extra point to make the final score 25-O. Eatonville played host to Bethel on October l6 and the Braves took their third league win by defeating the Cruisers 3340. Curbow scored three times and Kerr twice for the Braves. Two con- versions were made by Brodigan and one by Wright. Cheney Field was the scene of the Braves' fourth game. The Braves tied the scoring with Peninsula, 12-12, Brodigan and Curbow did the scoring for the Braves after Curbow ran ninety yards on the kickoff. Curbow and Kerr did the scoring in the Buckley game to give the Braves another Win, Curbow kicked the extra point and gave the Braves a l3-O win. On Nevember 6, the Braves met Fife and won MAO. Rich and Allison made the touchdowns while Curbow and Brodigan scored the extra points, Rich and Allison each scored one touchdowng Brodigan, three and Cur- bow, twog to give the Braves a 450 Win over Yelm on November ll Cur- bow kicked the extra points. Federal Way met Bethel at Sumner l-ligh School on November 20 to play for the first and second place positions, both having had no losses. The Braves suffered their first loss by a score of l3-5. Curbow scored the Braves only touchdown. With this fine record the second place trophy was brought home to the l-iome of the Braves. all 4 175' 1,1 fkmv fav avi 5,4 me X, 4' , L Mpeg 444.131 L90 m YYIL- W' - Row 1: G. Vsfallacc. G. BRAVES TAKE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Hopes looked high for the Bethel Braves when Coach Robert Fincham reported to the gym for the first turnout of the season to find 'thirty-four boys raring to earn a position on the team. With five returning lettermen from the previous season, experience was not lacking for the Braves. The returning lettermen were Walt Leigh, Gene Ketter, Dave Rich, Felix Brodi- gan, and Gary Allison. After two cuts, sixteen boys remained with good promising talent. Others seeing action for the season were Gary Anderson, Larry Symmons, Thorne Tibbitts, Don Stave, Gene Ressler, Danny McGraw, Gene Williams, Steve Gohr, Howard Funkhouser, Gerald Plumb, Charles Bennett, and Gerald Wallace. The Braves played four non-league games, two with Bellarmine, which the Braves un- fortunately lost, and two with Franklin Pierce, which were split-each winning one. With league action beginning December 11 the Braves met Federal Way on their home court defeating the Eagles 58-33. Walt Leigh was high point man of the evening with 15 points. The Braves won their second victory by defeating Yelm 53-41 on Yelm's court. High point man was Ketter with 21 points. Fife played host to Bethel on December 18 only to see themselves defeated by the Braves 67-54. Leigh hit for 17 points to load his fellow players in scoring for the evening. The Braves played host to White River on December 22 and claimed a 63-35 victory over the Hornets. Ketter was high paint man with 14 points and Brodigan followed closely with 13. Orting was the scene of Bethels fifth league victory. Ketter with 26 and Leigh with 22 points led the Braves to a 63-42 win. The following Friday the Braves journey to Peninsula tc upset the Seahawks 65-53. Ketter was high point man with 19. The Braves took their seventh straight win by defeating the Vashon Pirates by a score of 64-48 on Ianuary 19. Leigh with 19 and Rich with 18 points led the winners. The crucial game finally came when Bethel upset the Eatonville Cruisers 51-42. Brodigan was high for the evening with 18 points. Ianuary 22 was the date of Bethe1's ninth victory. The Braves defeated Orting 61-45 with Leigh hitting for 18, Brodigan for 17, and Rich for 12 points. Ketter hit for 18 points to give the Braves a 58-41 win over Federal Way on lanuary 26. On Friday night Bethel trounced Yelm on the Braves' home floor 56-40. Brodigan was high with 17 points. BASEBALL HOPES LOOK STRONG Although only two league baseball games had been played when this story was ready for publication, the Bethel Braves were off to a good start under the direction of Coach Eddie Niehl. The first game saw the Braves win over Orting by a score of 2-l, Eatonville got their first league defeat when the Braves upset them in an eleven inning thriller by a score of 6-5. The next game promises to be another thriller when the Braves meet Peninsula. The Braves should go all the way with six of the nine positions on the team being filled by returning lettermen. These students arei Gary Allison, second base, Iohn Kerr, center field, Glen Fuhrman, first base, Dennis McGraw, left field, Gene Ressler, catcher, and Danny McGraw, pitcher. Making up the rest of the squad are: Carl Laslie, pitcher, Gene Ketter, short-stop, Wayne Bush, third base, and Ed Wright, Dick Allen, Gary Ander- son, and Rodney Bedford, fielders. Danny McGraw, although only a sophomore, has been doing a tremendous job on the mound with Gene Ressler catching. Although graduation will take six of these players hopes for the future looks fairly good for Bethel. The Braves have taken trophies in football and basketball this year and hope to go all the way and capture the baseball trophy, too. any, Us, , .Q TRACK TEAM Row I: G. Curbow. T. McDonald, R. Martin. BRAVES ENTER TRACK MEETS Something new was added in the field of sports at the Home of the Braves for the first time. This was a track team. Twelve boys earned posi- tions on the team and made a fairly good showing in competition. The only meet to date was a quadrangular meet with Foster, White River, and Fife. The Braves scored twenty-seven points to take third place honors. Foster, with sixty points, placed first, White River, scoring thirty-four points, took second, and Fife, tallying twenty points, finished fourth. An interclass track meet was held early in the season with the seniors coming out on top, followed by the sophomore team The juniors placed third and the freshmen finished last. Some of the better performances to date have been: Felix Brodiganh efforts in the shotput, high jump, and 220-yard dash, Dave Rich's showing in the pole vault, high jump, and lUO-yard dashg and Ron Gehring and Gene McDonald's showings in distances. Gene McDonald placed fourth in the annual Pierce County meet held in conjunction with the Daffodil Parade for running the three-mile cross-country. Other members of the team include: George Walden, sprinter, Terry Mc- Donald, Dennis Durham, Gene Williams, and Allen Cantrell in middle dis- tancesg and Danny Morris, Gene Curbow, and Rodney Martin in field events. FOOTBALL Coached by lohn Ostrander and Glen Fuhr- man the Bethel freshmen won five straight games in junior high competition to win the championship. The frosh opened their season by defeating Federal Way l3-7. The following week they traveled to Fife for their first night game and carne out on top with a score of 14-O. Three other games were played with the frosh defeating Peninsula 6-O, Buckley 45-O, and Dupont 42-O. This group shows fine promise for future talent at the Home of the Braves. 11 C Cll. BASKETBALL Seven games were played by the freshmen coached by Ed Niehl. The frosh won two vic- tories, one over Vashon by a score of 49-33 and the other over White River by a score of 43-18. Losses were recorded against Peninsula with a score of 4l-33, Federal Way, 29-27, Fife, 34- 30, and Dupont, 39-26. A very exciting game was played with Stewart Iunior High but the frosh lost out with a score of 43-4l. Although the frosh did not show too good this year their spirit is high and they should develop into some pretty fair players. FROSI-I BASKETBALL Rim' l' K. Bzirdwvzll. VC. Bush. Lyons. gl. Thornton.
