The times in which we live make many of yes- terday's goals, practices, programs, and facili- ties obselete. With courage and confidence, the weaknesses and neglect of our public schools must be faced and their urgent needs must be given first priority. Fundamentally, there is no military or diplomatic need that should have higher pri- ority than our schools. HARRY E, EBLING Supervising Principal M.r. Earl C. Koenig Principal, Bethel High School Mr. Harry E. Ebling Supervising Principal Tulpehocken Area Joint School District. To the class of l959 As you review your high school years, we trust that your experiences will bring back not only fond memo- ries, but that they will serve to remind you of your re- sponsibilities and expectations. We at Bethel are concerned that you achieve cer- tain goals: that you set for yourselves high standards of personal conduct, that you render your best service through your vocation or profession, that you always strive to exemplify the highest principles of morality, honesty, sincerity, and industry. It has been the aim of your Alma Mater to help you achieve these goals. The success of our efforts will be measured by your contri- butions to society. We believe you have the ability, courage, and willingness to achieve these accomplish- m6l1tS. To each of you, our very best wishes for a happy and successful future. Sincerely, Earl C. W if -1 KIA Calling All Carrs 'Calling all Carts, this year's thespian offering by the seniors, played to capacity audiences on November l3, l958. The production was under the capable direction of Mrs. Maggie Y. Snyder. Bill Stewart starred as the rich uncle who was suffering from a severe case of stomach ulcers. Mildred Geesaman, the housekeeper, jumbled a radiogram, due to her sinus condition, and started a series of misadventures that kept the audience in stitches. The relatives, Connie Royer, Carolyn Schoener, Joan Lehman, Barbara Roth, Gordon Long, and Harold Schneck, thinking Bill was buried at sea, ransacked the house in search of his will. Doris Stauffer, a hillbilly from the Ozarks and madly in love with Ray Keeney, a doctor, was the heiress apparent, and enemy of the searchers. Gail Keller, a negro cook, after she was bribed by Joan Lehman to bake a pie for her to give to her fiance, Ray, was bothered by her conscience so she gave Joan's money back. Bill returned from his Bermuda trip, not buried but married. His new wife, Dorothy Snyder, a cheerful nurse, and Bill's stuttering secretary, Harold Trautman, accompanied him. Bill's arrival on the scene triggered several very hilarious situations that kept the audience in stitches til the play's happy ending. 46 I'm goin back to the Ozarks. Who's A thlef .md murderer? New projects included A Backwards Day, and a more efficient method for entering me auditorium for assemblies. The Student Council sponsored a banquet for the Championship Soccer and Hockey teams, held a contest to select an emblem for the school flag, and sponsored a fellowship dance with Penn-Bernville. Some old projects that were continued were: after-basketball-game dances, Dress Up Day, Senior Breakfast, Sadie Hawkins Dance and the selling of school pennants. The Student Council also attended the anniial Student Council Convention at Brandywine Heights High School, 48 ECHO STAFF FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Kathryn Burk, Lester Tobias, Nancy Gibble, Carolyn Schoener, Dorothy Snyder, Lucille Kohr, John Boehmer, Harold Trautman, Adele Keeney, Nancy Keeney. The school newspaper, the ECHO, is published monthly by members of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. This year's staff had Dorothy Snyder as Editor-in-chief, Lucille Kohr as Assistant, and Carolyn Schoener as Feature Editor. These three stu- dents had the duties of developing new ideas for articles, getting finished assignments from the staff, and having the newspaper in the hands of the student body by the end of every month. Under the capable leadership of Sports Editor Johnny Boehmer, the sports section of the paper was expanded. Johnny's writers added credit to the department. A new editor was added to the staff this year. We started an exchange program with other schools in Berks County. The exchange editor is Nancy Gibbel. The staff did a superb job due to the assistance we received from our advisor, Mrs. Catharine Crubb. 49 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA FRONT ROW, L. to R.: Mr. Gerald Seiler, advisor, Gene Brown, Carl Hollenbach, Richard Frantz, Leroy Hollenbach, Glenn Heisey, Ray Keeney, Fred Bowman, Paul Heisey, Barry Wagner, and Mr. Mike Orendo, advisor. Farm show week saw the Bethel Chapter of F,F,A, shine as it has never shown before. Advisor Mike Orendo was one of 125 Pennsylvanians cited for safety awards by Governor Leader, while four students who directed the Bethel Chapters destinies this year grabbed off Keystone Farmer Awards. With Berks County receiving only 12 Keystone awards, our local boys led the county show. Under the direction of Advisors Orendo and Seiler, this years group was very active. President Glenn Heisey, Vice President Ray Keeney, Secretary Fred Bowman, and Treasurer Leroy Hollenbach led the chapter through a year of projects consisting of a calendar, '3OO chickens, safety and soil conservation. All is not work with the F.F.A. either. Several picnics, initiation night for the greenhands and F.F.A. week at Penn State brightened by chapter morale. The Keystone Farmer awards went to Glenn Heisey, Ray Keeney, Fred Bowman, and Leroy Hollenbach. 50 Future Teachers of America FRONT ROW, Left to Right: Ruth Ann Hoffman, Gordon Long, Helen Engle, Doris Stauffer, Ruth Schneck, Gail Keller. CLASS H ISTORY There comes a time in every students life when they must enter their freshman year. For sixty members of the class of '59, this momentous occasion occurred in September of 1955. Mr. Brooks and Mr. Orendo had quite a time getting our noisy group organized into High School routine. Some solid citizens from Rehrersburg and Mt. Aetna joined the Bethel group to populate rooms 11 and 9. One day in September we held a class meeting in room 9 to elect class officers and get better acquainted. The class officers were Pres.--Ray Keeney, Vice Pres.--Richard Bashore, Treasurer--Fred Bowman, and Secretary- -Ruth Hoffman. In the spring due to the absence of Mr. Orendo, Mr. Wilfred Baer joined us in room nine as our advisor. In the fall of 1956, after a strenuous summer, we invaded the rooms of Mr. Koenig and Mr. Reimer. First on the agenda was a delightful grasshopper-eating party held as a part of our Biological study of Phylum Arth- ropoda. The destiny of the class was lead by the Pres.--Fred Bowman and his assistant Richard Bashore, the treasurer was Johnny Swope and the Sec. was Joan Lehman. ln this grade we had our first experience in sponsoring a class dance. The St. Patricks Day Dance was not a big financial success but was enjoyed by all as the Metronomes provided the music. We selected Gray, red and white as our class colors and ordered our jackets. At the end of the year we also selected our rings. As Juniors we moved into Room 10 with Mrs. Snyder, as our homeroom teacher. Due to the size of our class, several members were forced to join the ranks of the sophomores in rooms 12 and 5. After we got settled, we elected Ray Keeney as President, Richard Bashore as Vice President, John Swope as Treasurer and Doris Stauffer as Sec. Our first concern was the arrival of our class rings. We sponsored a highly successful Christmas Dance with Buddy Karl's orchestra. We received an addition to the class in the form of Bill Stewart, a recruit from Reading. lt was in Physics class that a crew of rocket experts was born. We went to Gettysburg on our class trip with Mr. Hamer and Mr. Good as our. chaperones. It was also in this year that we sponsored a soup sale. That was quite an eventful day as we sold over 200 qts. of soup. We worked hard but it added a nice sum to our treasury. ln September of 1958, we entered Bethel High School as Seniors, a long hoped for aspiration. We had as our home room faculty advisors, Mrs. Clements and Mrs. Grubb. Larry Weller, who came from Donaldson, joined our class. To begin our senior year we elected class officers, Johnny Swope, as president, Richard Bashore, as vice- president, Doris Stauffer, as secretary, and Harold Trautman, as Treasurer. This year added many new experiences to our class. For instance, our yearbook, which took many hours of untiring effort for the staff. Another new feature was our Senior Class Play, Calling All Carts. This will always be remembered by our class, especially by those who took part, for we had some very enjoyable times during play rehearsal. To broaden our field of education, we took several class trips, such as to the Harrisburg Steel Company, to Wernersville State Hospital and Reading Court House. To raise money for our yearbook and class trip we had a soup sale, a food sale at Open House, and also after the basketball and soccer games. As is customary, our class had a Senior Prom. It was a delightful affair and all seemed to have a good time. The most important trip of our school career was the Senior trip to Washington D.C. The trip was educational and enjoyed by everyone. Finally came Commencement with its rehearsals, speeches and class nite exercises. The climax came with receiving our long awaited diplomas. With the four years of high school behind us, we hope to take our places in society and meet the problems which come upon us in the future. With Commence- ment--we are not ending our school career--but, rather beginning our life in service to our school. 53 SENIOR Friendliestz D. Stauffer H. Trautman 2 Best Dancers C. Schoener H. Paced by high scoring Johnny Boehmer, the squad roared through a uy- 12 game league schedule with only one loss to mar their season. When the smoke of battle had cleared away, Bethel 'rested on the top of the heap, , with the league crown and county-sportsmanship award in their hands. Trojan mentors this year were Chuck Reimer and Carl Graver. Cap- ains of the squad were Johnny Boehmer and Tom Olesh. SECOND ROW: Coach Carl Graver, Nolan Keeney, Kenneth Lymaster, Jacob Sholl, John Hoffman, and Fred Bowman. The 1958-59 Trojans played their all -independent schedule for B.H.S. under a freshman coach. The boys showed improvement under the capable tutelage of Coach Carl Graver, who this year took over the coaching reins at Bethel. Seniors who closed their scholastic careers were John Swope, Jim Stock, Johnny Boehmer, Tom Olesh, Bill Stewart, Nolan Keeney, Fred Bowman, Kenneth Lymaster, and Jacob Sholl, Underclassmen Pat Sickafus and John Hoffman also donned Trojan uniforms for the campaign. In this year's court wars, the Orange and Black topped Myerstown twice, Perry twice and split with North Lebanon and South Lebanon. Double losses to Conrad Weiser, East Lebanon and single losses to the Lebanon Catholic Beavers and the Alumni completed the debit side of the record. For the season the Orange and Black had a 6-8 record. Top game scoring honors go to Johnny Boehmer, who canned 27 markers against Myerstown on the Bethel Boards. Boehmer went over the 20 point mark in no less than four contests, the only trojan to do so this season. Pat Sickafus's 19 point effort against South Lebanon at Iona and John Hoffman's 18 points against Perry at Shoemakersville also were top scoring performances. The three leading scorers for the season were Johnny Boehmer, Pat Sickafus, and John Swope in that order. Pivotman Jim Stock trails this top trio in the fourth position. 68 FOR 6-8 SEASON l 1 1 fi: - 5 , V U- - .V Q Mj T. Olesgg. I i I 3 I 4? 1 if 'QL' CJ Q 3 ws 5 Q P. Sickafus J. Stock J' Swope B. A few defeats could have been turned into victories, but for some almost impos- sible bad breaks, and some unfortunate errors occurring at the wrong time. This year's team will lose four seniorsg namely, Neal Stupp, Dave Brungart, John Weatherholtz and Jon Ketner. The younger element on the team should develop into a winning combination in the near future. Some of the bright spots in this season were the consistent hitting of Jon Ketner and Neal Stupp, and the on the spot pitching of Anthony Weise and Tom Olesh. Coach Walter Hess's 1959 array will have a talented pitching staff, which shows promise for a bright future. Hamburg 16 . . . . . Bethel Perry 7 ....... . . . Bethel Conrad Weiser 4 .... t . .
