The memories of our days here will ree main with us all our lives. We will always be grateful to you, Bethel, for the lessons in living that you have taught us. Since the time you first graduated a class you have sheltered and watched over many, many classes giving them all objectives with which to face life. From a small beginning you have grown into a large institution, many additions have been made to you, you have survived fire, storm, and time. Twenty years ago your graduating class contained nineteen, this lune We stand one hundred strong. Mr. Buck, our supervising principal, has said The only certain thing in this changing world is that there will be change. So it is with you and though we are nostalgic, we are proud of you and your achievement, for you have proved equal to the task of chang- ing. Now we are graduating, and because we are the last, we hope that you may especially remember us. We, of the Class of l953, love you Bethel, and we hope that you will stand forever atop the sumrnit's brow, giving to countless students of the future the priceless things which you have given us! ingmcwfem T. This school is owned by the people themselves, but it is operated by the administration-1-Mr. Hartlieb and Mr. Buck. Mr. T. M. Buck, the supervising principal, who has given his capable services for twenty- three years, sends this message: Seniorsel hope you have not reached your goal with graduation from high schoole that you are determined to go forward and to use all that you have learned here as a tool to gain more learning. Only a few may go on to college, but everyone may have a desire to know more and to have more skills. That de- sire can be met in many ways to push your hori- zon farther and to grow bigger and better. The Time and Energy of Youth are Yours- use them. Mr. Hartlieb, principal of the high school, has been at Bethel since 1939. He served as a first lieutenant during World War ll. Before becoming principal, Mr. Hartlieb taught Ameri- can History and P. Q. D. l-le became principal in 1949 and has served in this position ever since. They are the representatives of the stockholders of the circus, and their job is to see that the circus is run in accordance with the wishes of the majority of the stockholders and to meet the needs of the performers. It is their responsibility to see that performers are properly trained so that they may successfully compete with others in that great performance-life. The members who make up this board are: Mr. Lawrence Fife, President, Mr. Allan Reid, Vice Presidentg Mrs. Eleanor Knabe, Treasurer, Mr. Herbert Wissingerp Mr. Denny Smith, Mr. William Parmelee, and Mr. Kenneth Carson. Mr. Frank lack is secretary of the board and it is his duty to see that their plans are carried to The school board determines the curriculum of the school. lt is due to them and the admin- istration that new courses will be offered next year, and the new shops, equipment, and facili- ties are an example of their progressive think- ing and planning. Within the last few years, Bethel has been constantly growing and this growth has created a great problem in the school system. The board is to be commended for its handling of this problem. Last spring construction work was begun on a new high school, which will be completed this spring. This school, the product of the board's dreams and plans, is certainly proof that they have the best interests of the youth of completion. the community foremost in their minds. .girfwof ,glcrefariezi From left to riahh Mrs. Huber Mrs. McKelvie, and Mrs. l-lansell. At the beginning of the school year, the troupe of '53 started to think about a yearbook. The staff was chosen, and work was begun. The entire staff worked hard, for they knew that it was necessary for every job, small as it might be, to be done well in order for the finished prof duct to be what they wanted it to be. So, through many months, material was written, pictures were taken, the layout was 80,6071 planned, ads were solicited, and orders were taken. The staff learned what a job it was to produce a yearbook. Finally, in February this Beacon went to press, and the staff sat back to wait. Here is the finished product, and the staff is proud of its work - a record of the greatest show on earth. BUSINESS STAFF-Left to Right. First Row: M, Baker, M, Prank, M. Opfernian, I. Moorvloft, B. Jslsllfe When you go to the circus you buy a pro- gram so you will know what is taking place under the Big Top. Here at Bethel you would buy a Hi-Lite to find out what is happening. The Hi-Lite came off the presses once a month during the school year. lt was crammed with the latest school news and could be pur- chased for one thin dime. The expense of printing the Hi-Lite was only partially covered by the amount taken in from sales. The newspaper staff met the re- maining expenses by soliciting advertisements from neighborhood businesses, and holding two dances. Additional funds were obtained from Left to Right-First Row: Miss Golden, R. LaPorte, Mrs. Connell. Second Row: P. Dugan, L. Griffin, B. Brown. Third Row: M. Iones, D. Paris, I. Cornelius. Ioan Cor- nelius headed the Business Staff, Betty Brown assisted her, Lois Griffin was Circulation Man- ager, and Patricia Dugan, Photography. Typists were Sally Murdoch, Pat Lavelle, Carol Belay, Shirley Dublin, Iris Q'Farrell, Faith Qlivani. Qriff ana! sim!! lf a circus performer excels in his job, he is made a star, if a writer here at Bethel distinguishes himself, he is honored by being made a member of the Quill and Scroll. To become a member of Quill and Scroll a student must be a junior or a sen- ior in the upper one third of his class and have had at least sixty inches of his writ- ing printed in some publication recognized by Quill and Scroll. A member of the yearbook staff may be chosen for doing outstanding work in his particular job. Last year Ray LaPorte was chosen, this year the members from the Hi-Lite werefloan Cornelius, Mary Bodine, Dian Paris, Lois Griffin, Betty Brown. Patty Dugan, Marjorie Iones, Ierry Davis, and Mabel Baker were selected from the yearbook staff. !9u,nL Mum Lett to Right-First Row: W. Niel, B. Goodemoot, E. Liscomb,R. Helferrich, D. Reese, Q. The student coun- cil, sponsored by Mrs. McMaster, is a body composed mainly ot an executive council and home room representatives. Under the leadership oi Kingdon and Dot many innovations were brought about. For the first time in Bethel High's history a recreation night was held. lt was such a success that Stu- dent Council tried to hold one each month. More clubs, which were sorely lacking in this department, were organized for the junior high school. Student council really deserves a round ot applause tor all its successful and worthwhile undertakings. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE First Row: A. Howard, D. Gardiner, L. Dox D. Higgins, P. Edgell, B. The Congress is two years old and in those two years, it has become a well-run organization headed by B. G. Lauda. Bette Bingman, the Clerk of Courts, and Florence Walther, the General Secretary, were the only officers needed for the group. The 1952 Prom was held on May 9 in the gymnasium. Color and pag- eantry reigned supreme as the Ha- waiian theme was carried out to spec- tacular success through the Willing co-operation of the entire class and the excellent foresight of the Prom Planning Committee. The class worked for many days decorating the gymnasium and checking plans to make sure that the Prom would be one that would be re- membered. Finally when the big night came, the tired but happy lun- iors, along with the dazzled Seniors, danced the evening away in the Ha- waiian paradise to the music of Wes Parker. enior orLgreJ5 From Left to Right-First Row: Mi. The house lights dimmed and the audience was hushed as the curtain opened on the first act of Ghost Wanted , a mystery- comedy by Guernsey Le Pelley. This was the beginning for the audience, but the end for the cast. Under Miss Golden's direction they had been hard at work rehearsing for many weeks. The rehearsals were, for the cast, happy memories of food, fun, and fren- zied shouts of You're on! or Oh gosh, that's my cue! The rehearsal party at Miss Golden's home will always be remembered, although it must be confessed that little actual rehearsing was done. The characters of the play were portrayed unusually wellfwho will ever forget Madame Zolga's trances, the monster's appearances, Troddy's screams, the efficient sheriff, the frightened girls, and the Professors voodoo doc- trines? Even the faux pas of the performances added to the play-Ginger's and Hugo's pro- longed kiss and Ieff's bad aim when throwing an earring--will be remembered by play-going Bethelites for a long itme. The class of 1953, with its first endeavor in this field, proved itself capable of great dramatic production. STAGE CREW Lei! to Right-Kneeling: R. Bente. Standing: B. Bingman, I. Davis, D. OE PGP? .AAi5fanfJ Bethel's extraordinary circus even has its own library, and like every other library it takes hard work to keep it in good shape. This year Mrs. Stutsman had Miss Knight to help her with the manY jobs in the library, but there was too much to be done by the two librarians. That is where the assistants came to the rescue. There were about forty girls from all grades in the junior and senior high school who did their best to help keep the library running smoothly. This left Mrs. Stutsman and Miss Knight more time to do other im- portant jobs. Bethel's assistant librarians will point with pride to the ever- growing library and will tell you that in the past year about 600 new books were added to the shelves, something of which all Bethelites can be proud. 47 hangin J if If ,.-... Bethel's own musi- cians are creating that symphony ol music and the only thing missing is the shriek of a steam Calliope. The marching band performed at most of the football games this year and as the days went on they progressed to a very creditable standard. The majorettes brought credit to the school as well as appreciative whistles from the stands. With the coming of winter, the band moved under the big top and turned their talents to the annual concert. The music for it was not con- fined to the usual marches, but provided enough classical and popular pieces to satisfy every- body. Mr. Gump, the director, has done a fine job and both he and the members of the band de- serve a well earned round of applause for their Work this year. cancing 5230! 5 Top Row: Gladys Boo zer, Nancy Long, Linda Ricart. Nancy Long, the head majorette, Nancy Mil- ler, Helen Hancock, Linda Ricart, Gladys Boo- zer, substitute, and eight-year-old Sandy Sula, the mascot, drew applause from appreciative audiences whenever they performed. The Bethel eleven was elim- inated from the A race by an underdog Baldwin team. The team proved themselves champion- ship material as the strong offensive averaged better than 20 points a gameg and the strong, alert line held opponents to less than 5 points a game. On September 12, the Blackhawks opened their 1952 season with a crushing 25-7 victory over the Homestead Steelers on the latter's field. lt marked the third successive win over the Steelers in as many years. The game was high- lighted by Zegler's brilliant end play and Ver- scharen's spectacular running. Bethel continued their great offensive play as they defeated Snowden High 26-0 for their first home victory. Bethel proved themselves title contenders as they whitewashed a favored Bellmar team 31-0, for their third straight win of the season and their fourteenth in a row. The game fea- tured three touchdowns by Verscharen and two by Carlson. A fired-up Bridgeville eleven stopped a Blackhawk attempt to gain its fifteenth straight victory by edging them l4-13. A strong Bridge- ville defense held the Bethelites until the last quarter when a Bethel rally fell short by one point. The following week showed signs of its old form as they trampled a weak Brentwood Bethel slumped again as an upset minded Baldwin team triumphed 14-6 sparked by Bob Alexander who raced for 64 yards for the first score and the lead which they never lost. The loss proved fatal to the Orange and Black, inasmuch as it eliminated them from the Class A title race. The Blackhawks gained another win at the expense of West Allegheny l3-O by playing a spirited heads-up game. The Bethel line in this game proved to be invaluable as they stayed off drives, deep into their territory. A 7-7 tie with the league-leading West View team proved to all, that Bethel had a winning team. Ted Holmes pulled a Frank Merriwell finish in the last two minutes by scoring the game-tying points. Dad's night at the Cecil game proved worthwhile for them as the Bethelites treated Pop to a 14-O win over Cecil. Ted Holmes scored all 14 points as great line plays enabled Bethel to finish successfully a wonderful season. FOOTBALL SCORES BETHEL 25 HOMESTEAD . . . BETHEL 26 SNOWDEN . . . This year's team consisted of five seniors with previous varsity experience-Verscharen, Everly, Pic- ard, Carlson, and Holmes. Three newcomers to the squad were seniors Zegler, Hartz, and Trainor who had previously played standout ball on the junior varsity. Rounding out the squad were three juniors-Carpenter, Lacich, and Cot- ton and one sophomore, Smith. Competition was keen for the five starting berths as Coach Ed Strall let every player prove himself in the open- ing game with South Hills which Bethel won 46-29. The Blackhawks were not as fortunate in their next game as they bowed to Canonsburg 4l-52 in the first away game of the season. ln their next outing Bethel hit their stride by romping over Peters Township 72-46, but three nights later they dropped a closely fought 43-5l decision to Donora in the latter's home court. Bethel broke their away game iinx against Mt. Lebanon 67-54 as Verscharen tallied 17 points. The Strallmen downed their next three opponents West View, Canonsburg, and Dormont to go into SectionVl action with a 6-2 record. The Blackhawk's first league game was with Homestead, one of the best teams in Western Pennsylvania, coached by Chick Davies. The Hawks played hard but were outclassed by the Steelers 47-63. Zegler counted for l8 points. The fol- lowing week the Bethel squad met another top-ranking W. P. l. A. L. team in the McKee-sport Tigers. The lineup of Verscharen, Picard, Everly, Zegler, and Trainor played their best game of the year as they pulled one of the early surprise upsets in Section Vl by copping the contest 48-45. Spirited by their upset the Hawks encountered Duquesne in their next game and due to the latter's small gym the Bethel lads could not overcome the Dukes margin and went down to a 47-57 defeat. Verscharen and Everly had one of their better evenings as they scored 19 and 18 points respectively. The next league contest for Coach Strall's lads was with Munhall. After leading throughout the whole game Bethel weakened in the final moments and lost a close 54-56 game and the following Friday the Hawks played sloppily giving Clairton an easy 45-54 victory. Luck changed for the Black- hawks the following week as they downed Brentwood and Baldwin. Zegler played brilliant ball in the Brentwood game and netted a total of 29 points, That ended the first half of league play. Bethel hit a streak of bad luck in the next three games as they lost to Homestead, McKeesport, and Duquesne. Out of these three teams, Homestead emerged the Section Vl representative in the W. P. l. A. L. playoff games. Bethel traveled to Munhall for their next game and it looked like they were in for more bad luck but a desperate push-shot by Ted Holmes in the last l5 seconds of play, gave the Hawks a thrilling 62-6l win. Bethel lost to Clairton but rounded out the season by beating Brentwood and Baldwin. Picard and Trainor played standout ball in the last two games to put Bethel into a three-way tie for the fourth slot in league play with a 6-8 record. Bethel's overall record was 12-10. Last season the Blackhawks won their third Section ll title by copping six straight games, but in the playoff the Hawks were downed by a tough Washington High team 8-3. The team was made up of five seniors and juniors, two sophomores, and three freshmen. These included Bruce Haupt, second base: loe Verscharen, first base, Noel Knoerdel, shortstop, Ken Travis, third base, Tim Gray, Rich Bier- nacki, Don Smith, and Tom Fredly, outfielders. Very important in the record of the team were the pitchers and catchers. Capable per- formers for the squad were pitchers, Mickey Carlson and Walt Thurner. The two pitchers held the Hawks' opponents down to a 2.83 run average per game. The all important catching department was staffed by Phil Saunders and Fred Zegler. As this year's team has yet to report, it is impossible to name a starting nine, but many of the above names will probably be in the scorebook. BETHEL HIGH BASEBALL RECORD 1952 Bethel .... .... This organization is composed of fellows who have earned a letter in one or more of the school's three major sportsefootball, basketball, and baseball. The paramount purpose of the club is to encourage sportsmanship both among its members and throughout the school. The club also annually awards jackets to graduating senior lettermen. This year the rollicking roustabouts turned in quite a performance. The annual Varsity- Faculty basketball game went over with a bang, as did the sale of sweatshirts and boy's gym equipment. But perhaps the most profitable of the club's activities was one in which the or' ganization itself had comparatively little influ- ence. This was the magazine subscription drive sponsored by the club and carried to as- tounding success by the student body. The varsity club had a very successful year with the steady, reliable influence of Mr. Gates, the sponsor, to ease it gently over the unforseen difficulties. QZOMAQCL5 Le!! to Right-First Row: T.
