MAY WE PRESENT - - l I PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL Vol 9 I 939 Pg2 TI-IE i939 BEACGN DEDICATION 1 Al I With supreme pleasure we, the class of l939, dedicate this book to Mr. Moore. We are attempting to show our appreciation of the help which he has extended to the school as a whole. For ten years he has been our athletic coach at Bethel and during this time our athletic p r o w e s s has been considerably developed. Each year he gives much of his time to the training ofthe football and basket- ball teams. We are glad that there will soon be a new athletic field upon which to carry on his new activities. We gratefully and sin- cerely wish him many more successful years at Bethel. Page 4 ADMINISTRATION This term completes Mr. Buck's ninth year as supervisor of the Bethel Township Schools. Dur- ing this time he has done his best to keep all the school activities running smoothly. He now has under his guidance Bethel, Hillcrest, and Kings Schools. He will, we believe, have many more happy years here. MR. T. M. BUCK X '1 MR. D. M. BOYCE Page 5 During the ten years that Mr. Boyce has been principal of Bethel High School, he has faithfully guided ourfootsteps aright. With sympathetic understanding he has always helped us through o u r difficulties a n d taught us the value of worth-while things. We are indeed grateful for his kind advice and en- :ouraging helpfulness and hope that he may help many more senior classes to graduate from dear old Bethel. MARY L. ECKE, A. B. Page 16 1 PROPHECY AND CALENDAR -.igii One cold day in January, l953, I boarded a plane for Washington in order to attend the inauguration of President RALPH WILSON. As the plane roared into the air, piloted by THOMAS ARTHUR and JACK CANTWELL, I saw mechanics STEWART, MCGINNIS and LEAKE rush off the field. Stewardess BOBBS handed me the latest edition of PETRUSH'S Modern Gazette. On the sports page was a picture of Coach SCHWENGER'S star athletes, namely, BURTYK, CEGLARSKI, CEVARR and NISHNICK. I read two very lovely poems written by MARY MCKOWN and OLIVE LEONARD and a column written by JANET McNElLLY, the famous beauty expert. In the society column there was a very elaborate account of the RAY MacLACH- LAN wedding. Just then the plane arrived at Washington, but as I took one last look at it I noted that CATHERINE JENKINS was maid-of-honor and WESLEY WALL the officiating minister. The first thing I saw when l entered the new inaugural building was IMOGENE CUTSHALL flirting with Vice-President ROBERT HEZLEP. Over in one corner I saw HAZEL GREENE, SARA JANE BARLEY, CATHERINE NOBLICK and DOLORES PAFF arguing as to which had the best secretarial position. The building seemed a trifle cold to me but I could not decide whether to blame ED CROCO for too much air conditioning or KEN Mac- PHERSON for too l'ttle fire in the furnace. After the inauguration President Wilson met us and announced that ANTHONY SLABE was Secretary of the Treasury and BILL APPEL Secretary of Agriculture. As I left the inaugural building I met DOROTHY HUTCHESON who was now an interior decorator, and, both of us having decided to stay over- night, we took a room in WOOD'S fashionable hotel. When we left the registrar, AMELIA DONATI, we were conducted to our rooms by bell-hop ED SMITH. We tuned in on the radio just as PETER MINKO announced the musical hour, PETER DEWAR yodeled a hill-billy song and FRANCES and ALMA KOBE sang a very lovely duet. After that there were some news items, the only one of importance being the award of a medal to MARJORIE JACKSON and CORA DENSON for saving a little boy from drowning. That evening we attended a stage show at the LeBON.CINEMA. There was a aroup of beautiful chorus girls amona whom we recoanized JEAN MCCURRY, DOROTHY STOLTENBERG, HELEN SOPP, KATHERINE FEST, MARY SUSKO, and WANDA GOHACKI. As we left the theater we noticed a crowd gathering on the street in front of MILDRED COLE'S tea-room, so we rushed to the spot. We found that SOPHIA KROLL, now a lady of wealth, had fallen on the icy walk and broken her leg. Her traveling companion, ROSE PAWLOWSKI, telephoned the hospital and DR. NORDSTROM soon arrived accompanied by NURSE GOURLEY. After this bit of excitement we all went into the tea-room and had our fortunes told by JULIA SNOVAK. After chatting a while to DOROTHY GILBERT and LOUISE MOORCROFT, who owned a dress-shop across the street, we made our departure. On our way to the hotel we met LUCILLE 'BRENKUS and LILLIAN NIEMAN just returning from a teacher's conven- tion. The next morning we arose rather late and went to ARMOR'S Restaurant where we were served bacon and eggs by HELEN LACHMAN. As we were leaving we met two famous pianists, JENNY BAZZOLI and MARGARET CHURCH, coming in. We then took a bus out to LUTHER KNAUFF'S nine hundred acre farm. We found Luther showing JANE SEKON and SANTA DeMARCHl, two vacationing nurses, his large dairy room. We returned directly to Washington and here separated, Dorothy to take lunch with actresses JANE MCNARY and RUTH LANDAU and I to catch the train for home. As I boarded the train I greeted LEONA LENOSKY and JOSEPHINE RUSCIOLELLI who were just arriving to accept secretarial positions in the government. When the last of Washington had disappeared behind a bend I settled myself for a comfortable siesta. Page 17 Ln is F. ang- Q. A E up :' ily. V. V' QQ- g . t ., Q. 14 Name WILLIAM APPEL . . . . . They stayed after school four evenings a week in order to lend and receive llbrary books for the benefit of studlous Bethelltes. All those who like to read appreciated the helpfulness of our librarians. OFFICE ASSISTANTS We have the Office Assistants to thank for delivering the morning bulletins and any other announcement that is important throughout the day. They watch the office when Mr. Boyce is busy at some other subject, by answering the telephone or anything that may arise. We know they enjoyed the Job and were glad to help our principal In his busif hours. The office assistants are chosen by the request of the students themselves. They are chosen from study hall and therefore do not miss STAMP CLUB The stamp club, sponsored by Mr. Weaver, meets every week. to discuss the topic of stamps. Members learn the value of the different kinds of stamps and the circumstances that have made these stamps so valuable. They learn also. how stamps are made. One of the leading purposes of the club Is to trade and sell stamps that members have, for stamps that are not in their collections. During the year they hold various kinds of exhibits to show the rest of the school the merits that make stamp collecting one of the most Interesting hobbies in the world. The two outstanding exhibits this year were the Washington series, and the collection of Tuberculosis Seals. GIRL RESERVES To be a Girl Reserve gives a high school girl a chance to llve and act ln her school llfe. according to her highest standards and ideals. The girls when banded together, feel strong and can assert a greater lnfluence. This Tear the club enrollment was larger than ever before. The club meets every week and its members discuss any questions that may arise. Many of the meetings are devoted to men of the world who come and volunteer their services in trying to answer some of the questions and give their advice to the problems that we will meet when we leave school. The boys worked very hard in the summer sun to get into shape for the first game. After winning their first game 39-O Bethel was ready for their closest rival, Snowden, but they proved to be the better team and won I6-7. Bridgeville and Hickory were evenly matched and the final scoreii were finally posted at O-O. North Fayette was next, and after a battle in mud and rain, Bethel was declared the winner at 7-O. This brought the green of South Fayette, and after a battle of thrills and bad breaks, ended l3-7 in their favor. The Gold and Black took revenge against East Washington and won l3-O. The season ended with a loss to a great Cecil team l3-7. The' season may be considered as fairly successful with three wins, three losses and two ties.
