ACADEMIC DEA DR. JOI-I DRAYER Dr.john Drayer came to Bethel College as Executive Vice President and Academic Dean last September. New to Bethel, he is not new to the role of college professor and administrator having had fourteen years in those roles at Gardner-Webb College in North Carolina. New to McKenzie, he is not new to Tennessee having married a former Nashvillian, graduated from Belmont College in Nashville, and served as pastor of two churches in Middle Tennessee. Dr. Drayer has friends who cannot understand why he likes aca- demic administration. I like the challenge it presents to see improve- ment and change, he says. Bethel presented Dean Drayer with abun- dant opportunities to see change and improvements. The finishing touches on the self-study, the first year of the Masters Degree pro- gram, the transition from quarter to semester systems, and the Sesqui- centennial Planning Committee have kept Dean Drayer busy. He roams the campus frequently. MBWA , or Management by walking around is a tool he uses to keep up with the activity on campus. I always learn something by walking around which I would not learn otherwise. Dr. Drayer has one succinct hope for Bethel students - Finish Strong. This challenge was given in the Opening Convocation Sep- tember 23 when he was presented as the new Dean. As for his first year at Bethel, Dean Drayer said, I didn't finish . . . I have only begun!
