J i l Chapel message from the President l To Hanor Our President On behalf of the entire student body we dedicate the 1960 Helm to you, Mr. Pannabecker, as an expression of our love and respect. We have gratefully seen Bethel College progress and advance the cause ot Christ under your wi se leadership. Your interest in Bethel College extends from her initial foundation year in l947. You served as an instructor during the institution's infancy. More recently you labored behind the scenes as a member and vi ce-chairman of the Board ot Directors. You have come to the presidency with a full knowledge and a positive approach to her problems, and have been understanding of school oolicv. Yours is the tranquil, steady dedication of a lifetime of God's great tasks. T A ii x 2-M A plz. , fit ik s ' ,.-5 N-wr' 1 On July 16, business and civic leaders of this area ioined educators in paying tribute to Bethel College at a recognition luncheon co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of South Bend and the Committee of 'IOO of South Bend and Mishawaka. lt was held in the social room of the new ladies' residence hall on Bethel's campus. The purpose was to give local people an opportunity to extend greetings to Rev. R. P. Pannabeclcer, newly elected President of the College. All members of the Administrative staff of Bethel and all department heads were guests of the sponsor- ing organizations. Plans for the luncheon were handled by Kenneth Burch, General Manager of the South Bend Chamber of Commerce, Lee McBride, meetings Committee Chairman ofthe Committee of 100, Clarence Harding, Publics Relations Director ofthe South Bend Tribune, John Lamey and Ray Pannabecker of Bethel College. The official name of the meeting was the Bethel College Recognition Luncheon. This was the first time the two sponsoring organizations had ever ioined forces for such an enterprise. D. Paul Huffman, Elkhart business man and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Bethel gave the invocation. The Varsity Quartette of the College sang a few numbers and were received very enthusiastically by all in attendance. Orlan Golden and Seth Rohrer ofthe Board were also in attendance. Seven Community leaders spoke briefly in recognition of the important role Bethel was playing in commun ity development and welcomed Rev. Pannabecker to his new position. President Pannabecker gave the main address in which he outlined both the background and obiectives Of the U. M. C. and Bethel College. One statement from his address was quoted verbatim by the South Bend Tribune, Spiritual leadership is the only real reason we have for existing.
