Your un- tiring labors inthe Departments ofEducation and Science have not only bettered us as students, but have raised the standards of these Departments and Bethel College. We thank you for your service in the field of Christian teaching. You encour- age those who are discouraged, help those who are in difficulty, advise those who need special council, and send from Bethel College teachers, who not only have a sound educational foundation, but a sound spiritual foundation as well. Even with all these tasks -- Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Professor of Education and Science, Chairman of the Credits Curriculum and Instructional Com- mittees, member ofthe Student Relations and Administrative Committees -- you still find time to be an Ambassador for Christ. For all the services you have rendered to God and Bethel College, Dean Sando, we are honored to dedicate to you this tenth anniversary Helm. 4 Board of Directors ggi Rev, H, E, Bgwmqn, Chqirmqn, 1957 Rev. R. P. Punnobecker, Vice-Chairman, 1957 Laboring behind the scenes at Bethel College at the members of the Board of Directors. To these men go our thanks and appreciation for the labor they freely give on behalf of the college. Through the ten years of Bethel College's history, the Board of Directors have had the interest of the college at heart. It is these men who havenurtured and the policies which the College sets forth. The members of the Board are composed of representatives of each of these districts -- indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Nebraska. The Board meets twice each school year -- in the Fall and in the Spring. lt is at these meetings that the school policy is formulated. The Board has final authority on any matter concerning the college. The develop and approve the budget, plan and approve the employment of personnel, approve any plans for building or financing, and give final approval to the curriculum. Again we thank you, Board Members, for the high scholastic standard we now enioy at Bethel College. 'r First Board of Directors of Bethel College - 1947 - 5 fc Bethel College is proud of her faculty of sev- enteen members who serve God and Bethel with sacrificial service. They come to us from four ' states, lndiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa, as well as from Canada. Studying, not only to im- Drove themselves but to improve Bethel and each student that passes through her halls, the faculty strives to be approved unto God, a workman that weedeth not to be ashamed. O -jv- ' x . , , . ft we Q ..ff357 9' if Th . e Admlniggmnon tif From the desk af O Hitherto hath the Lord helped us il Samuel 7:l2J. On this e n 1 tenth anniversary of Bethel College it is fitting for us to give praise to our Heavenly Father for His many blessings to us. God has provided us with a fine student body of 284 in the first semester or three times the initial enrollment of 93. All to- gether over l,0OO students have enrolled at Bethel College during the first ten years. Many of these are already finding their place as members of the Alumni Association in serving Christ and the church both at home and abroad. The Bethel College faculty and staff today numbers 26 which is twice the original number. We feel that the Christian teacher is the corner stone of our program and our greatest contribution to the life of our students. Since i947 God has given to us a Science Building andthe splendid additions to the Administration Building which have pro- vided for offices, classrooms, library, and chapel. Now we are engaged in building a fine new auditorium-gymnasium. These are evidences of God's material blessing. ln finances Bethel College frequently has expenses larger than the income, but God has frequently manifested Himself in our behalf. Through all these years Bethel College has developed a pro- gram that has met with acceptance in leading colleges and un sities of America. Accreditation by the Indiana State Department TWA i ks for teacher training has been a definite contribution in the recent WOODROW I, GOODMAN growth of our institution. Social life The Social Life Committee feels that all work and no play makes .lack a dull boy and, therefore, plans par- ties and banquets to round out our social activities at Bethel College. Through the Help of Dthers Chapel Speakers We -0 REV. HAROLD WALKER One ofthe most blessed hours at Bethel is the hour we lay aside oun studies and activities to gather in the chapel for a time of spiritual refresh- ment. Here our thoughts are turned to God as we share in the experiences of others, as we listen to God's Word, or as we participate in a praise service. We were privileged to have Rev. Harold Walker, nationally known evangelist, as the speaker for our Fall Revival. The ten days he was with us were days of blessing and challenge. Our respon- sibility to God and man was again made clear as we listened to the heart-searching messages God had laid upon his heart. Rev. Gerald Foster, Vice President of Winona lake School of Theology, gave us tood for thought as he spoke to us in October. The National Holiness Association was rep- resented by Rev. Paul Kindschi who challenged us to make the most of our opportunities here at Bethel. Rev. Gerrard P. Jackson, a former actor on the Shakespearean stage, has a unique ministry in giv- ing impersonations of Bible characters. lNote small picture.i R EV GERALD FOSTER REV. PAUL KINDSCHI REV. GERRARD P. His soul- searching and practical messages gave us new light and help in our spiritual growth. His mes- sages will long linger with us and continue to bear fruit. Rev. Robert Struhbar ofthe Missionary Church Association spoke to us ofthe importance ofthe Holy.Spirit in evangelism. Rev. Robert Yunker, pastor of the local Meth- odist Church, brought us highlights ol his recent trip around the world. Rev. Weyburn Johnson, one of our own mis- sionaries to India, challenged us with out respon- sibility to the millions of that land who at this hour sit in heathen darkness. On January 17th we were privileged to have Peter VanWoerden with us in our chapel service. We enioyed his music on both the piano and organ and were challenged by his message from the Word of God. The choir members represent Ohio, indiana, Michigan, and Ontario. This year they sang in all of these areas. The spring tour took the choir through Southwestern Ohio, Ontario, and Eastern Michigan. When the choir mem- bers, gowned in blue and white, blend their voices --tri- umphant, meditative, or filled with pathos -- audiences everywhere know that they have studied to show them- selves approved unto God. h x-L ,-A -A .qi fi. Again we were thrilled as we listened to the message of this great oratorio which pro- claims the advent of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The MESSIAH was presented on December l6th in the First Methodist Church of Mishawaka under the direction of Professor Franklin Lusk. This year a string quartet, members ofthe South Bend Symphony Orchestra, accompanied the group and added favorably to the presentation. Professor Raymond Weaver accom- panied at the organ and Professor Donald Murray at the piano. Soloists were Charlene Potterbaum, soprano, Elaine Ummel, contraltog George Elia, tenor, and Eldon Fretz, bass. The above picture was taken at the final rehersal ofthe MESSlAH . The Spring presentation of the Oratorio Society was the dramatic oratorio, UELIJAHH given in the new auditorium of Bethel College. The two main areas covered ore Testing ond Counseling. ln the testing program all students are required to take certain college ability tests: students in Orientation classes are given occupational interest testsg and all students have the privilege of taking various aptitude tests. The main use of the results of these tests is thot the instructors may better know their students and be able to help each one individually, more effectively. They also enable more efficient ond more satisfactory counseling as the student comes in contact with his own personal counselor--some member of the faculty. A Guidance Committee of the College composed of five members is in charge of the Guidance program. This committee in turn ossists other faculty members in doing a better job of aid- ing the individual student. 102 ' Bethel College students taking the College Ability Test Advertising B R A D Y ' S Shoe Repairing Men's ond Boy's Shoes INSURANCE For every need see William L.
