1986 Thresher Volume 60 Bethel College Class Randy Schroeder kept pretty strange company the night of Halloween. Title 1 The Green was the scene of both scholarly - and not so scholarly - activity (above), as Christa Dyck concentrated on her studies while John Carper raced his fun cycle past the Library. Students got another break from their studies during the annual spring workday (right), during which funds were raised for Student Activities Center renovations and other pro- jects. 2 Intro CONTENTS I 1 1 ( 1 Stud 3n Lit e 1 1 4 1 5nic )rs 1 Jd inic rs 3Q Sc )ph orr orl 40 Treshmen 50 ion Grad ja1 65 Activitie ' 84 i Contents 3 wild creatures of the night need to eat also. Bethel Col- lege cafeteria is as good as any, says our werewolf. Old Main North took very seriously the stuff about Hallow- een being ghoulish, mean and nasty. Student Life 5 Halloween The Fartbusters (above) turned their attention at the Halloween costume party to Mr. (Harder) Falwell, who apparently was full of hot air. Also displaying a colorful costume was Carolyn Siemens (right). 6 Student Life Posing as the World Series iiero Bret Saberliagen and his wife (above), Richard and Barb Gehring signed autographs at the annual Halloween costume contest held following a special meal provided by the College Food Service in the festively dec- orated dining hall. Scott Neufeld, as Pee Wee Herman, rode to fame during the competition (left). Cash awards for contest winners were also donated by the Food Service. Deluxe quiche became integral part ofBetheVs Halloween celebration. The night was dark and the moon was out. The setting was perfect for another eerie Hal- loween at Bethel College. As the clock struck five (we must listen for it now since it went undercover behind the salad bar sails), many students began to appear at the dining room dressed as phantom pillow people, coura- geous fartbusters, and the lone Pee Wee Herman. mdividuals from the community - including faculty members and our leader, President Harold Schultz - all attended with the hope of enjoying a colorful, festive Hal- loween. The galloping gourmets of the Bethel College Food Service recognized the occa- sion by preparing tacos and deluxe quiche. Little did they realize what a major part their food preparation would play. A group in the back of the cafeteria became intent upon the action in the front. After the masses in attendance had eaten their fill, the annual costume parade began. Between costume displays, the audience was blessed by the message of the Rev. Ben (Harder) Falwell. Other messages were pre- sented by the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the slumber party people of Haury ' s ground floor. One would ordinarily expect the end of the parade to conclude the celebration. But the lone cry of food fight in the quieted cafete- ria produced another finale as men, women, and children took refuge beneath tables and chairs to avoid the deluxe quiche, taco ingre- dients, cottage cheese and bacon bits that were launched from their missile sites. Total destruction seemed imminent. But never fear. The hero of the evening, Food Service Director Craig Farrell, appeared and within minutes brought order to an otherwise chaotic cafeteria. People were soon able to wade through the debris to peace and tranquility in the outside world. 8 Student Life Dean of Students Ron Flaming and his daughter, Sara, hung out with the college scene. Jenny Siefert and Lynn Harder made their mark with a very popular art me- dium. Ben (Harder) Falwell saved many souls on Halloween night. Not a very scary statis- tic. Student Life 9 Student Life 11 Fall Festival 1985 A Time For Sharing Many Gifts as a Bethel Community A crowd of more than 11,000 attended yet another successful Fall Festival once again marked by beautiful October weather. The morning of October 12 turned out to be an ex- cellent day for the largest event of the fall term at Bethel. The afternoon before was not promising. As the annual Anything Goes Competition got underway, the sky became dark - but the activities waged on. The students competed hard, ignoring the cold and the drizzle. which got bigger, the balloon or the che eks? Saturday morning, however, dawned sunny and pleasant, and the busiest day of the week was underway. Scattered about the lawn were many varieties of booths display- ing both the talents and the friendly spirit of the community. Bethel students displayed their theatrical and musical talents in the Drama Department ' s production of Gene McKinney ' s A Different Drummer, and the Music Department performed its rendition of The Reluctant Dragon . The tradition of Fall Festival was carried on another year and plans for next year ' s cen- tennial version of Fall Festival were already underway as cleanup crews swept over the Green. 12 Fall Fest Pat Frantum already looks confused and he isn ' t even running yet. Newton ' s law of hard ground prevented Jon McCam- mond from getting his stick in the ground during the annual Anything GoesContest. Fall Fest 13 ill Roy Friesen, freshman starter from Canada, moves the ball downfield. Jerald Richardson finds time to clean up. The men of 8B really do have something to hide. Now those times are few and far be- tween. 16 Student Life Keeping track of Fall Festival activities at the announcer ' s table (above) were Hajo Brons, Mary Smiley, Jerome Waltner and Lisa Zimmerman. And contributing to the festive atmosphere of the day - with its repertoire of spir- ited music - was the Threshing Ma- chine (left). Also performing for the Fall Fest crowds were area musical groups that included a dixieland jazz band headed by Newton High School band director Keith Woolery, Woolery ' s high school percussion ensemble Su- per Stix, and Sounds of Joy, a Pretty Prairie High School quartet. Other events included the official opening of the Abraham Ratzlaff barn exhibit at Kauffman Museum, a German-Swiss luncheon served to i,600 epople, an evening pork barbecue, and a fund- raising auction of quilts and other items.
