Photos 2 4 by Dennis Kehler Photos by Eldon Esau With 1979-80 picked as the International Year of the Child, it was only fitting that the theme for Fall Festival be 1t ' s a Small World , centering around the child and the family. It takes all kinds to make a world. And here at Bethel we ' re just a very small port of that world. But even though we ' re only a small port. Bethel reaches out to many states and foreign countries to gather students of all kinds to make a world of study and learning experiences. Today ' s society is so caught up in getting ahead or being number one that many times we forget just who we really are and where we are in relation to everyone else in the world. As the Song It ' s A Small World After All says; It ' s a world of laughter, a world of tears; it ' s a world of hopes and a world of fears. There ' s so much that we shore, that it ' s time we ' re aware, It ' s a small world after all. Let these words be an inspiration to you as you go through the rest of 1980 and don ' t forget why we ' re here and who we really are. Remember that a smile means friendship to everyone and happiness spreads to love everywhere. Games, Races, And Activities Begin Fall Festival Fun, games, and no classes began Friday, October 5 to kick-off a weekend of Fall Festival. Anything Goes Competition began in the afternoon with team activities. Teams had to enter early to participate and had to consist of six members-three female, three male. Photos by Eldon Esau The Diary Of Anne Frank Opens Fall Fest Closely tied In with the Fall Fest theme of The Year of the Child, The Diary of Anne Frank portrayed the story of a young Jewish girl and her family and friends In the midst of World War II. It was a story of people, living together in minimal space and forced to work together and support each other in order to survive. Even more, it was a story of a child ' s growing up, of budding love, rebellion, the search for identity, and hope for the future. The process of growth stops for nothing, not even the tensions and strains of warfare and uncertainty, This story re- mains relevant today, as it reveals the effects of abnormal yet man-made pressures on family life and relationships. 1. The Music Educator ' s National Con- vention allows students interested in teaching music an opportunity to learn more about music education. Working closely with the Kansas Music Education Association, mem- bers receive a magazine, attend workshops, and attend meetings where guest lecturers, usually first year teachers, speak about their experiences in teaching. Thus, stu- dents can discover if a music edu- cation career is right for them; the group is also helpful in planning fu- ture occupations for interested stu- dents. 1. This year, students went to the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City, and arranged to show art-related films. In Krehbiel Auditorium and in the Administration Building, the art labs are open for students to work on painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking and sculpture. The art gallery in Krehbiel maintains continuous exhibits of various artists, including our own Bethel faculty and students. 1st row: Jim Friesen; 2nd row; Leann Schroeder, Nodine Abra- hams, Jennie Dyck; 3rd row: Cathy Coon, Leona Woelk. MINORITY CLUB Offers Students Support Perhaps the most important function of the Minority Club is to work towards the recognition of minority students as a real part of the Bethel College family, (Hope Mosley); that these students need no longer feel isolated. The club served as a type of support group for minority students. Its members address relevant issues affecting students, and through activities seek to help students cope with the new college environment. The highly successful Minority Week and the Survival newsletter are only a few of the group ' s activities this year. In ad- dition to sponsoring these fasts, this group organized the timely and inspirational Peace Teach-in. Other activities included writing letters to congressmen, atten- dance at the Goshen assembly on a response to the draft-regis- tration issue, and the drafting of a statement of Bethel students re- garding the registration question. This group offers students a means by which they can, to- gether, work to put their beliefs and concerns into positive ac- tion. 2 RELIGIOUS LIFE TEAM The Religious Life Team is respon- sible for many types of religion- oriented happenings on the Beth- el campus — campfires, chapel, concerts, small group Bible study, and special speakers to name only a few. The group also works with service projects, such as the Mennonite Disaster Service, and student counseling. The group ' s dedication has provided multiple opportunities for students to pur- sue their religious interests. DEBATE The debaters at Bethel, coached by Mel Goering, compete within a five-state region. Unlike athlet- ics, there is no conference, so stu- dents compete against all types of schools with debate programs. Enthusiastically, Goering reports, Bethel College is the only col- lege with quality debate and for- ensics in Kansas. 3 FORENSICS This year ' s forensics squad worked hard to achieve the well- deserved rank of ninth in the na- tion in the American Forensic As- sociation. Coach Mark Stucky felt it was the student ' s own com- petitiveness that stimulated their excellent performances. Over the year he saw real improve- ment in communicative skills. Students can use either public address or interpretive styles for speaking; these many types of in- volvement allow for a great deal of flexibility for the students. The forensics group offers interested students the change to compete regionally with their skills. The Gong Show . . . A new event in the arena of S.A.B. hall socials, the Gong Show proved to be the scene of Bethel wit and talent at its peak. Students re- vealed their unique and often un- discovered skills to a captive audi- ence which wasn ' t quite sure what it hod gotten itself into. From among the few who never heard that fateful gong, well-deserved awards went to the winners with the highest scores: a piano-picker, a rope swinger, and a class-A, fast- talking salesman, Who knows what lurks in the future for the Houry Hall Gong Show? 1 President Schultz gets into the action. 2. Dear Ruth By Norman Krasna Dear Ruth is the comedy of a sweet, young woman and her radical and rash sister whose sneaky plan goes somewhat a wry. A love-letter romance becomes more than was intended and Ruth finds herself confronted with two fiances. The well-developed characters never fall to bring laughter and praise with their humanly-typical yet hilarious actions and sayings. The play takes place in the Wilkins home in Kew Gardens, Long Island. There are two acts cover- ing just two days for the entire play. 67 Instrumental Band Plays On Many students with a talent for playing musical instruments participated in either the jazz or instrumental bands. Led by Michael Steinel the jazz group and the smaller jazz combos gave two main concerts in 1979-80 for Bethel audiences. This group also hosted clini- cians for learning more instru- mental skills, as well as per- formed at the student activity center on special occasions. The Thresher Staff The THRESHER Staff worked hard all year to produce a quality yearbook for the Bethel students, faculty and alum- ni. This year the staff added color, a few more pages and changed to a fall delivery to allow for spring events all to be in the same book, with no supplement. Many hours were spent in spare time and time was made to get the book finished. Work did extend into the summer months however for the editor. The staff also attended a workshop in the fall to further their yearbook knowledge. Left to right: Eldon Esau, Tom Claassen, Jennie Dyck, Ron Headings, Julie Piel, editor, and Fiona Okene. The COLLEGIAN Staff kept a hectic two week schedule throughout the school year to publish a newspaper to keep the campus informed of local happenings. Time was spent every other Wednesday night laying out the paper to turn it in for printing and distributing on Friday ' s. This year ' s staff had more help and therefore published larger papers throughout the year. Second semester the staff got help from the Print Journalism class with writing articles. Students Travel Through Interterm 1980 January, 1980 was the time for many students to do some excit- ing traveling. Through Bethel and other campus ' , trips were taken to Central America, Mexico, Eu- rope, Russia and various parts of the U.S. Many students enjoy their interterm time as a period where they can learn by exper- iencing a different culture, lifes- tyle and setting. 1) Wilma Wollman, Preston Goering, Debbie Wiebe, and Valerie Orr sit atop a Mexican stone building during Janu- ary, 2) June Gundy and a friend ciown for the camera at a fountain in Europe. 3) One of many beautiful buildings seen in Russia by tine touring group. 4) Bettiel Students on board tlie bus to the Southwest states for an energy field trip. Graduation day began with baccalaureate services planned by the graduating students. Commencement began Sunday afternoon with the commencement address being given by Archie R. Dykes, The University of Kansas chancellor. Of the 113 graduates, 10 received the two-year Associate of Arts degree while 103 received either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. Graduation honors went to 39 students based on their academic records. Five seniors, Doug Harms, Gordon Harms, Rich Toevs, Jim Goering and Russ Schmidt, were selected by the faculty to membership in the Bethel Honor Society. College graduation marks an end for many and another beginning for others. Some graduates had plans to further their education. Some were planning a marriage. Some were looking for jobs and some were even planning on taking it easy for awhile. But whatever the graduates of 1980 do, the future is sure to hold whatever they pursue for their life ' s career. 1) The Bethel College graduation class of 1980 begins their traditional march around the green before entering commencement ceremonies. 2) Seniors round the green preparing for their graduation. 3) The last leg of the march, up Mem Hall stairs. 4) Afterwards, it ' s time for congratula- tions from family and friends.
