1975 Bethel College Thresher BETHEL COLLEGE NORTH NEWTON, KANSAS Keith Henley, Editor IVlax Stucky, Business IVIanager John Sheriff, Advisor The Man Who Has No Past — Has No Future. - Harold J. Schultz This was the year of the Mennonite ' s recognition of their hundred years in Kan- sas. It was in 1874, that Turkey Red Wheat was brought from Russia, and it was in 1974 that this past was red i s - covered through acentennialyearof celebration. Mennonites throughout Kansas joined in to reca I I their heritage. Different com- munities and churches held celebrations of their own. It was notonly a time of remem- brance, but a time of chal- lenge. It was not only where have we been?, but where are we going? More Fall Festival Bethel ' s Role It is particularly appro- priatefor Bethel College to have an i nteg ral role in this centennial since the same pioneers who settled on these praries were the leaders who tookthe riskand had the vision to charter this institution. In turn, Bethel College became the agency that melded to- gether and helped educate the seperate and often suspicious communities that made up the various waves of immigration, -Harold J. In his four years as the head of the col- lege, he has considerably reduced Bethel ' s debt, and has done much to raise Bethel ' s prestige in Newton. Schultz has been cited editori- ally in the Wi c h i ta Eag I e for his achievements in the past few years, when other comparablecolleges have only seen losses. Looking at the Centennial Year, Pres ident Schultz says: We look back in 19 74 and g i v e thanks to lod for what He has done in history ndto follow in the tradition of those early pioneers by d a r i n g to see the unseen and to stake our lives on the V i s i 0 n of what we are not yet, but can become.
