Only six seniors played on the team that came alive at the end of the year to defeat arch- rival McPherson and conference champion St. Mary ' s. The squad of nearly sixty was one of the largest in Bethel football history. Lacking experience and maturity, the offense still showed potential much of the time. Turnovers plagued them almost as much as the opposing defense. The Thresher defense was one of the biggest in the conference, but numerous injuries sometimes hampered their effectiveness. Never- theless, the Threshers were always competitive and showed great promise for the future. Several players were accorded post-season honors. Bethel placed four men on the All-KCAC roster. Russ Larkin and Wynn Goer- ing were selected as part of the NAIA District 19 first team. ' i roundball, it was a pressured year f 4 f- ■ US.. As compared to last year ' s All-Conference team, they lacked heighth and experience. Only two letterman returned to assist the squad. Ten games were lost within a margin of eight ooints or fewer. Most of the game ' s victories were undeterminable until the last few min utes. There were a few encouraging times during the year for the Threshers. They placed third in the Four Corners Classic in Durango, Colorado. And a defeat of 81-78 over St. Mary ' s, in an overtime, ended the season with a winning note. Lanoy Loganbill coached the Junior Varsity into a season of 13 wins over five losses. A team, with only four returning players, proved how playing together generates an exciting game. Such enthusiasm produced high scores of 101 over K. Wesleyan, 105 over Tabor, and 109 over McPherson. Al- though they were defeated in both instances, their best games were against higher-class ranked Emporia under tight refereeing. 1974 thresher scoreboard Varsity We They 54 Bluffton 82 68 Tabor 73 64 Kansas Newman 74 96 Colorado College 74 65 Bethany 71 67 Kansas Weslyan 69 65 Friends 72 73 Southwestern 75 72 Chadron State 74 86 Rockmount 50 76 Kansas Newman 80 59 Tabor 75 86 Sterling 77 88 McPherson 101 62 St. Mary ' s 66 52 Bethany 79 72 Kansas Weslyan 66 62 Southwestern 68 84 Friends 94 77 Tabor 84 85 Sterling 73 68 McPherson 83 81 St. Mary ' s 78 Jr. Varsity We They 84 Emporia State 101 85 Bethany 77 91 Kansas Weslyan 75 76 Friends 74 80 Southwestern 79 81 Tabor 77 88 Sterling 77 76 Emporia State 90 84 McPherson 73 72 St. Mary ' s 78 91 Bethany 69 101 Kansas Weslyan 74 73 Southwestern 87 74 Friends 80 105 Tabor 75 82 Sterling 77 109 McPherson 95 89 St. Mary ' s 59 92 tennis team swings third in kcac L to R; David Koehn 3 man, Kurt Goering, undefeated, 6 man, Stan Schmidt 1 man, Steve Ediger 4 man, Mark Matthies, alternate, Jack Warkentine 2 man, IVlark Christiansen 5 man, Larry Koehn, alternate. In the two semesters, the team scored a total of 2 7 goals to the opponents 24. A factor which counted heavily against the team, was the inordinately high number of goals that opponents scored, due to penalties against Bethel. The season was consid- ered successful by many, despite the fact that the majority of play- ers were inexperienced. 1973-74 Soccer Scores We They 3 Derby 1 3 McPherson 1 0 Tabor 3 5 Wichita S.C. 5 5 Hesston B 1 1 McPherson 2 2 Mexicans 2 2 McPherson 2 1 Mexicans 0 2 Derby 3 3 Mexicans 4 97 1973-74 women ' s conference scores BASKETBALL, L to R; Coach Barbara Anderson, Mama Toews, Yvonne Dooley, Barb Goering, Cindi Alexander-Captain, Kathy Bartel, Ann Esau, Jane!
