There is classwork and consecrated study. There are plays, family projects, banquets, and Chapels. There are friendships which become increasingly significant and meaningful. The Gmymuroon portrays college life during the school year 1954-'55. May- these experiences become influences which will foster genuine Christian living in the years ahead. D. C. Thomas jefferson, whose views on this subject were indeed advanced for his day, conceived of student government as preparation for good citizenship. If by a good citizen we mean one who is armed with a textbook definition of democracy, and one who has a thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of putting on banquets, class and sorority socials, then certainly we can and do produce good citizens. But this is hardly what our world is crying for. If by good citizenship we mean an intelligent working knowledge of democ- racy, an appreciation for, and respect for differing opinions and diverse person- alities, free of all labels -then we can, we must, produce good citizens. He who governs least, governs best. As student government evolves further, through nurture and guidance, as well as by virtue of its own dynamic nature, more responsibility to govern less, must be the aim of our nation's institutions and their student governments. -ARTHUR R. The student body of a Christian college needs the united effort and witness of a core of interested students if the activities and atmosphere of the campus are to be on a high spiritual level. It is the purpose of the Student Christian Fellowship to provide an organized channel through which students may express their common concern for a high quality of Christian life and relationship on the campus, and for an active program of worship, study, and service which seeks a fuller understanding of the implications of the Christian faith and a larger application of its message to the needs of men. Thus through the various activities of the SCF, there is opportunity for spiritual growth of the students individually, and as a body. Whether through the activities of the Campus Faith, Fellowship, and Recreation, Christian Service and Outreach, or Peace and World Order commissions, there is opportunity to worship, work, and play on the common ground of Christian brotherhood. Through Christian Life Week, the sponsorship of a German student, VS and Mission workshops, service projects, deputation trips, chapel, and worship programs, a need in the student's life is met which the academic part of school life overlooks, For those of us who have had the privilege of working toward the formation of the SCF, and have had a share in the experiment toward oneness, it has been a thrilling experience. However, as the novelty and newness of the SCF wears off it must continue to grow and develop if it is to live and do its work effectively. May its purpose be achieved and may its aim ever be to strive toward maturity. -JAMES WALTNER Ckridfian eruice ana! A Wi .v , .. ,gg All m read ions Bethel has much in common with many other schools--a unique set of customs, and codes, its own language, pedago- gism and othcial sentiments. Its domain lies sprawled on the dusty fields of Kansas. The Bethel campus is populated by ten different nationalities and every conceivable Mennonite clan. Two-thirds of the student body is related and the remainder would be except for geographical factors. A seemingly necessary formality in uniting this motley crowd is the unchallenging regression to high school days, namely, Freshman initiation. Newcomers to B. C. have all hopes of remaining anonymous blasted by blurbs of Bethel boosting. The freshman vocabulary rapidly expands to include such inimitable expressions as sack, chow, drive, gunner, goofed, drilling, racking, snowed, clueless, faked out, apey. The social life has been paired downto a bare minimumg two by two no longer means coupled, it forms a code. How- ever, certain feminine inhibitions have been overcome through the inauguration of leap week. At least during this time conduct otherwise construed as misbehavior may be taken for enthu- siasm. Bethel is a place where excessive motor transportation is prohibited, yet pedestrians are at a premium. Platonian, philos- ophy is interspersed with Pogo and comments about the dining hall food. Let it here be said in defense, however: The com- ments on food are merely traditional. Bethel is unequalled anvwhere for its odd and intense com- binations of sounds. On no other campus is mid-day announced by blaring the bell-tower version of Ave Maria over a loud- speaker. And yet there is no sound so welcome in the evening as the sounds of the chimes tolling some memory nearly for- gotten-of home. The memories we cherish from a year at Bethel are humorous, they are tender, they are ironic. They are indelible. -Mary K. Claassen ,....- s wi!
