9 IHL BETH-XNNU 9 COMMERCIAL PROPI-IECY WAS thrnkmg about the old school days at Bethel Ah Hovu well I re membered the mght of the party and the w1sh1ng ball and the thmgs we all wrshed for I had W1Sh9d for a tr1p around the world and novs my xmsh was coming true just ten years later I had spent four years at the Unlversxtv and several more IH hard labor For the past five years I had been llvmg 1n C1l1forn1a and had grown qu1te fond of my llttle home But thls mormng I was to start on my tr1p so I had no regrets at leav1ng But oh I had spent so much tlme rn fond remrmscence that my tram was almost due My chauffeur was wa1t1ng 1mpat1ently for he knevs the tlme was short I told h1m to step on rt and we rushed madly down the avenue gettlng there just 1n t1me I was just gett1ng comfortably settled when I saw a beautxful young woman exqursrtely dressed and up to the mrnute 1n every respect comxng down the a1sle I dld not know her yet there was somethrng vaguely fam1l1ar about her that wonderful wrnmng sm1le for surely lt couldn t be? But If was Lydxa Erlckson my school pal of Bethel days She too was leav1ng for a tr1p around the world so we planned to have a glorlous tlme together She was novx a successful prlma donna the most wonderful of the age She Sald she had 111 her employ three of Bethel s Alumnr Lllllan Oberg her personal mald Myrtle Carlson her very efhclent prlvate sec retary and Mllton Lmder her butler We chose to cross the Pacrflc by way of the I-Iawanan Islands As we were strollmg on the beach at I-Ionolulu one day we saw a young man surrounded by a bevy of I-Iula Hula glrls who seemed to be enJoy1ng themselves rmmensely Comlng nearer we dlscovered to our surprlse rt was none other than Clyde Per k1ns our frlend of former days When we left we tr1ed to persuade h1m to return to the Un1ted States where great opportumtles 3W31t6d h1m but Perky decllned say1ng he would rema1n as long as the weather was mce and the glrls were so crazy about h1m In Chrna vxhlle v1s1t1ng one of the great UDIVCISIIICS wh1ch Bethel was supportlng we found Dora Bowman and Myrtle Falk domg the greatest mls slonary work of the century On our journey agam we were readrng 1n an Amerlcan newspaper about a great prece of art our Presldent had purchased for the Capltol burldlng It had been pamted by Yvonne Ulane the most wonderful art1st of the age Thrs of course was only her nom d plume for we knew her to be Leona Meulleur of St Paul She had studled ln the states and abroad untrl now though she was consldered far greater than her teachers the old masters she st1ll consld ered herself a student Then we read on about the great thlngs our Presldent was dolng I-Ie had done far more ln h1s two years of rulmg than many have done IH e1ght and he Pq Fff,s f - w V gl' l 2 5 - - - I I , 1 ,lg I ' I I X I l 2 5 . .
