Bridgot Freeland Signs Of Perfection: Four Firsts For Class Of ’88 The senior class of 1988 took first in the homecoming float competition for the fourth year in a row. This feat has not been accomplished in quite some time. For this, congratulations to Class of '88, and here are your four winning floats. At top is the senior float labeled When the Huddle Breaks, Their Cradle Will Fall.” Below that is the junior float (1986) titled, We’ll Beat Them to the Ball,” and the sophomore float (1985), The Mustang Tide Washes Out Ironmen. Finally, at the bottom is the fresh- man float (1984), Panthers Have Passed Their Peak.” On the opposite page is the second place freshman float, the third place junior float, and the fourth place sophomore float from this year’s homecoming parade competition. A sure sign I should have stayed in bed is when I see that Mr. Crandall is mad. Shane Weybright A Sure Sign Of Improvement This year’s homecoming was a sure sign of improvement for Bethany. Homecoming Week was fun with all of the great activi- ties planned by the cheerleaders. The bon- fire got a little out of control as ashes show- ered neighbors’ yards, but, despite the small setback, everyone had fun watching the seniors chug Kool-Aid and burn dum- mies of the Niantic Indians. The best part of the whole week was the impressive victory over Niantic-Harris- town. The mighty Mustangs crushed the Indians 40-0 for a rare homecoming treat. After the game, many students watched the crowning of the king and queen, Lance McCain and Melissa Moody, at the annual homecoming dance. 6 A sure sign everything is going to go perfectly is when the guys I like smile at me. Hey, get down from there! 26 This year’s seniors may have been ani- mals at times, but they are undoubtedly a unique group of individuals. I am glad to be a part of our close-knit society. During our years of traveling the halls of the educa- tional institutions, some original class members left and many others joined our family. Besides the current class, these original members shared the thoughts and memories of the group and were perma- nently affected by our interactions. Most people believe we are different and they are right. Our family is unlike any other class of the past or of the future. Due to this, we had problems with people not un- derstanding us, but with the help of God or just good fortune, everyone from the re- maining class of 1988 graduated to the out- side world. I have some advice to give to my class- mates as they continue down that prover- bial path of life and meet its many signs: try to live the lives you dream of having but lookout for the YIELDS, STOPS, LANE ENDS, NO PASSING ZONES, and numerous DETOURS; lead the way for others but don’t pass up the MERGES with new people w'ho can teach you a part of different societies; get on those four- laned highways where the only signs for miles are SPEED LIMIT 65; and don’t for- get anyone from your great class because they’re the ones who made your life what it is today; think of us whenever you see along those roads, the hallowed sign that tells the story of our lives now and to come. This sign means more to us than anything else in the entire world. This sign is CAU- TION: SLIPPEREY WHEN WET. Thanks for everything. 11 27 Senior Division Editor Personal BIGGEST FLIRT Bridgot Freeland and Mike Sheehan BEST BODY Melissa Moody and Mike Bland MOST STUDIOUS Hilary Harshman and Anthony Baxter NICEST SMILE Rachel Dickens and Lance McCain MOST DARING Jana Rawlings and Gene Underwood MOST ATHLETIC Kristy VViszo-Waty and Mike Bland BIGGEST BROWNIE Mike Sheehan and Maleah Davis 28 Signals BEST PERSONALITY Kurtis Bun fill and Regina Utsler BEST DRIVERS Dave Boyer and Laura Crawley PRETTIEST EYES Melissa Moody and Brian McReynolds BEST DRESSED Melissa Moody and Lance McCain MOST MUSICALLY TALENTED Hilary Harshman and Mike Sheehan MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Adam McReynolds and Hilary Harshman CLASS CLOWN Jana Rawlings and Jay Still 29 A sure sign of a teacher’s pet is anyone who gets an A in history. Jennifer McDaniel Spanish Club This year in Spanish Club we had a great time. First we went to see Man of LaMancha at the Masonic Temple in Decatur. Afterwards, we went to Bonanza for lunch. We were almost halfway home when someone yelled, “Oh my God! I forgot my retainer at Bonanza!” We went back; employees found the retainer in the garbage, and all ended well. One of the high points of Spanish Club is sponsoring a Honduran foster child. Ours is Diana Caroli- na Larios Melgar. Next year Diana will turn twelve and no longer be eligible for sponsorship. We have enjoyed having her and hope the next child will give us as much happiness as she has. 1) Jr.-Sr. members: row 1; J. Callahan, J. McDaniel, T. Bly, E. Harris, D. Bromm, A. Shutter, C. We found out that it took hard work and dedication to be true competi- tors. Coach Crandall’s most reward- ing aspect was to see us realize we must rely on a team concept. If everyone has a job to do and ev- eryone contributes, they can’t blame anyone when things go wrong. The team put it’s differ- ences aside and put forth the ef- fort it took to win. One of the major reasons we were successful was that no one questioned the coach’s decisions; we gave him a chance. Good luck next year’s football team and thanks for making us believe in ourselves. Melissa Weakly Signmaking This year’s cheerleading squad consisted of five seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore. Since these girls worked together in ’87, they were all ready to go for ’88. Marge Overlot sponsored them once again which proved to be to everyone’s ad- vantage. Both girls and sponsor were very orga- nized; Homecoming came off without a glitch! The players would like to thank the squad for all the great food they provided throughout the sports season. Congratulations to Rachel Dickens who re- ceived the Sharon Young Award this year. 98 A sure sign of a good time is when the big pink cloud marked “fun” finally arrives. Chris Phillips M’s-In-M This year the Mustangs-in-Motion Pom Squad consisted of eight girls who attended dance camp at Eastern and received a spirit stick. The routines learned helped the squad perform at both football and basketball games. For fundraisers the squad sold Stanley houseware, held a pom-pon clinic for grades- choolers, and had a dunking booth at the fall festival. It’s tough to face the fact that I’m an adult now, or should be. All of my younger friends and acquaintances will be returning next year, while I’ll be far away. Most of the people I’ll never see again, but then there are the ones that I will see again. It’s all so confus- ing because I thought I was prepared for it, but then it suddenly reached out and slapped me in the face. I think it really hit me the most when a younger friend of mine told me she was still just a kid. You just don’t realize it until it’s right on you, and then it’s way too late, i still can’t believe I’ve graduated; it’s so unbeliev- able. Well, while I’m here I want to thank so many people that I’d better start. God, first, because I wouldn’t be here if not for him. Then all the people that have put up with me long enough for me to reach this point in my life: my mom, my dad, my grandma, Coach Bales, Miss Ryan (what patience!), and just about everyone else I’ve ever spoken to or picked on. Finally, I want to thank a few of my friends for just being friends: Adam “the Loan Shark” McReynolds, Brian “the Manipule tor” Matheson, Mike Bland. Bryan Barnes, Mike Duke man, Tammy Dunlevy, Erin Roach, my stud little brother, Ryan, and Harv. Well, good luck to everyone, especially ev- eryone I’ll be leaving behind. c «ur : v ’TT Your Editor-in-Chief ( N I , K4 f s- r ' • I fi f % H jVr • ;J v . .' rrNX ■ T ,v 1 r ' - : AX a.- I . u I cV- -T : V-. .2 r .. . . , .. • i i - . 5, ■■' -'■ ■- ' • •'. ■-. - ■ ■ •. . ■ ' . ■ . ■ ) - -5: • • .:.
