We started out with 2 non-conference victories over Ar- thur and Atwood, but it was downhill after that as we dropped our last seven to finish with a 2-7 record. Much can be attributed to the fact that we encountered twice as many injuries as last year. But during that time many underclassmen were able to play and gain valuable expe- rience for next year. This year's Mus- tangs can hold their heads high because we know we gave 100% every game, and when the other teams walked off the field, they knew they had played a game. So to next years Mustangs, good luck, and to this year's ''Senior 7 ' good luck in whatever you endeavor. Remember your talents and leadership will be missed next year. The young team, though nervous at the beginning, quickly became accustomed to the routine thanks to their varsity big sisters and their new assistant coach, Mrs. Cham- berlin. A year's experience should prove helpful when these girls return next year for more basketball! Mustang Baseball 12-9: Best Record In A Decade The Bethany High School base- ball team had an impressive season with a 12-9 record. Coach Inman said, It's the most wins in at least a decade. Sean Martin was a unanimous choice for the All-Conference 1st Team, while Kurtis Bunfill and Colin Moon were chosen for 2nd Team, All-Conference. Congratulations to the Mustangs on a great season! 24 BASEBALL Fillies First Year The Filly softball team was new this year to Bethany. Even though they had no wins, they had fun playing. This was the year to learn the fundamentals of the game. Coach Brent Phillips stuck with them all the way and didn't lose faith in them. Hopefully, next year, with their gained experience, they will win a few games. We're behind you. Fillies! The Filly softball team mem- bers are Connie Armer, Lori Ashinhurst, Joann Beals, Eliza- beth Brewer, Dee Dee Bromm, Kristi Bunfill, Lisa Crawley, Shawna Creek, Dawn Ferguson, Jill Fultz, Hilary Harshman, Kristy Hart, Vicky McCain, Debbie Ozee, Jana Rawlings, Tara Russell, Audra Shutter, and Kristy Wiszo-Waty. SOFTBALL 25 Track Almost Cut . . But The Tradition Continues TUCK TRACK CTIU ,. TRACK TRACK i TRACK TRACK 26 TRACK At Little Moultrie 3 Of 4 Relays nd This year the track program was almost cut, but some parents argued the matter and got it back in stride. The Mustang track team had a pretty good season this year. They took second at the Little Moultrie by winning the 400m, 800m, and 1600m relays. They also did well at sectionals taking 3rd in the 800m relay with Bryan Barnes taking 5th in the long jump. At the end of the year, Bryan Barnes was voted MVP and Mike Bland next year's captain. Coach Bales, our sensational new coach, presented Jason Phelps with the most improved award, and Anthony Baxter with the most dedicated. TRACK 27 YEARLING CAGERS This year was not one of the best for the 8th grade Yearlings. They only won four games while they went to the semi-finals of the re- gional. The 7th graders did a lot better. They got second place in their tournament and lost by one in overtime in the regionals. The top scorer for the 8th graders was Bran- don Yoder, and the top scorer for the 7th graders was Ryan Martin. Both Brandon and Ryan received the top rebounder awards in their respective classes and have proven to be valuable assets to their teams. Coach Parsons seems to be doing a fine job training these boys and along with other talented team- mates should be respected mem- bers of future Mustang basketball teams. Keep up the good work Yearlings, and we will be out to support you next year! Ji siting se rift. Ltirm, Jim pfrsJnsj . HutchWai, ii Sft'llij A. Haglman, J. Hutchcraft, C. Yantis, M. FUTURE FILLIES A new sport this year, Jr. High girls basketball, was introduced. The girls all had tons of fun and got in some training for their fu- ture high school years. The season only lasted about a month and was over before we knew it, but coach Foster and the girls will always re- member their first season. 7th Grade Takes 4th In State 8th Grade Slumps From Lack Of People A Ryan Martin, new state long jump record holder, with a jump of 18'3 . ____________________________________ The 7th grade boys track team did very well this year by placing 4th in the state tract meet. Ryan Martin set a new 7th grade small schools long jump record with a 18'3 jump. (The large schools' winner only jumped 18'2 .) Ryan also placed 4th in 100m dash. The 4x200m relay team of Martin, Peck, VanLoon, and Fultz placed 2nd in state. Ryan and Steve VanLoon ran the 400m and 200m, respectively, at the state meet. The 7th graders also won their regional meet. The 8th grade didn't do as well, largely due to a small squad. Brandon Yoder was their high scorer with 16 firsts in 11 meets. Track members kneeling are, M. Bland, J. Crowe, B. Osman, C. Smith, S. VanLoon, D. Fultz, D. Peck, R. Shutter, M. Maxedon, and E. Ashley. Standing are Coach Jim Parsons, B. Colclasure, J. TRACK Jr. Fillies Give It Their All: Send Two To State The Jr. High track girls gave their all during the season and sent Alene Lillico and Tracy Florey to state. Alene ran the mile and didn't lose all year until her state run. Tracy Florey went in the long jump slot. The person with the most points on the 7th grade level was 5th grader Amanda Dickens. Con- gratulations to Alene, Tracy, and Amanda, and to the rest of the Jun- ior Fillies! Track members kneeling: C. Mauldin. S. Ozier, J. Klukis, L. Fleshner, E. Roach, S. Inman, J. Martin, K. JoAnn Beals M CANDIDS ORGANIZATIONS Student Council This Student Council started off the year with a chili supper at homecoming. Later in the year they held their first annual student-teacher volleyball game which the Senior class won. At the end of the year they held their annual talent show which was won by No Reason and second place going to 3 Bad Rap. Also this year, student council put up the information sign in front of the school and kept us updated on school events. 36 STUDENT COUNCIL NHS Classics For the main part of this year, NHS membership was at an ebb with only two scholars, Margaret Fitzgerald and Bettina Emel. In April, four new members, Paul Kaiser, Mike Bland, Teresa Sweeney and Jeremie Smith, were added to carry on traditions next year. One tradition of NHS that all the teachers appreciate is the punch and cookies served at Halloween. One tradition that the senior citizens ap- preciate is the Christmas dinner. We iove NHS traditions! N.H.S. 37 Yearbook Staff members above: E. Hagerman, L. Phelps, J. Parsons, V. Maxedon, C. Mauldin, M. Dukeman, L. Oh- lendorf, S. Harshman, E. Sanders, A. McReynolds, and B. The yearbook staff is responsible for recording the history of Betha- ny High School. So watch out, you may get recorded! This large staff starts out in September planning the book, and distributing last year's book, and selling ads to help pay the bills. By November we're ready to sell the yet-to-be-made product. Spring is spent locked up drawing layouts, writing copy, and eating pizza! See you next year. 38 YEARBOOK. It would be a classic year if . . . we met all our deadlines and had time to spare, so I could go out on a date! Miss Ryan It's amazing how out of chaos we can get a yearbook. We work hard to make all of our deadlines. We met almost every Saturday, except maybe for two or three, and every Thursday after school. A couple of times we even had a late- night session. As always, toward the end of the year, we only get about 7-10 people who can work. Sometimes we even run out of “usable” pictures and have to use UNusable ones. We always seem to run into snags but somehow, with perserverence, the book comes out okay. L.P. YEARBOOK. 39 Future Homemakers Of America FHA conducted a number of activities this year including Dad's Date Night, the annual Christmas party, FHA Week activi- ties (which include roses to the faculty and staff, birthday cake day, secret pal day, etc.), Easter egg hunt, Style Show, and Spring Banquet. Mrs. Freddie Bone does an excel- lent job coordinating all these activities as the FHA Sponsor. 40 F.H.A. FHA members are A. Bolen, S. Davis, C. Lambird, K. Bunfill, E. Brewer, D. Ferguson, V. We sold Tom Watt and many people were among the top sellers. We had a style show and the seniors all modeled the new fashions — vaavoom! Toward the end we had a banquet and everybody pigged out! F.H.A. 41 Lettermen Carry On Tradition Letterman's Club sold Mustang candy bars this year. They really had good-looking wrappers . . . We also hosted the JV tournament again for the who-knows-how-manieth year. The best part of the year though was the annual banquet at the Old Coun- try Buffet in Decatur. We all ate until we were stuffed and the new members had to take the Letterman's Club oath. Well, that's just about it. 42 LETTERMAN'S CLUB TRADITION The 1986-87 Pom Pon squad added to its reper- toire by dancing at home football games along with the usual home basketball games. This young group in its third year is vastly improving and hopes to be even better next year! Scholastic Bowl The Scholastic Bowl team had a winning season this year. The J.V. team won first place in the conference at the tournament at Assumption, and the Varsity placed second in the conference and first at tournament. Varsity members pictured at right are R. Martin, A. Bax- ter, B. Brown, and M. Hocka- day. J.V. members pictured below are D. Williams, A. Shutter, T. Sweeney, J. Calla- han, E. Sanders, S. Ozier, S. Creek, C. Stotler, and P. Kai- ser. We were very busy trying to find new ways to show our spirit. We started out by decorating the school and then having a party at the park for the football players. Each cheerleader had a big brother for the basketball and foot- ball seasons who received a snack before each game. We also decorated a pillowcase for a senior and made scrapbooks for each senior basketball player. 48 Carrying On Tradition Spirit Ever Traditional Show Choir The Bethany Show Edition competed in four competitions this year: O'Fallon, Sullivan, Pekin, and Washington. The band would like to thank the Bethany Music Boosters for their unend- ing support and help in raising money for us by selling pizza, and cheese and sausage. Max Hoots The sophomore year is the year to build personal goals. One needn't worry about being a “lowly freshman, yet the junior-senior prom is still a year away. What's left? Well, clear the sidewalks because this is the year for driver's ed and that coveted driver's license. This is also the year to get more in- volved with school activities and many sophomores did just that. The class was well represented on sports teams, in show choir and marching band, in cheer- leading and pom pon, and in scholastic bowl, to name only a few. Personal goals have been set with one major goal for the whole class. Build a better homecoming float! We had many successful activities (boys basketball and scholastic bowl) and some not so successful (boys football and girls softball). But, we tried hard! All these and many more memories are put together in this book. Hopefully, in 20 years you can look back in this book and think 1986-87 was truly a traditional year.
