REVERIE 1985 BETHANY HIGH SCHOOL BETHANY, ILLINOIS 1985 REVERIE DEDICATION To FRANCIS “BUZZ” OVERLOT 7 7 TABLE OF CONTENTS Seniors 5 Juniors 29 Sophomores 33 Freshmen 37 Jr. High 41 Organizations 49 Activities 69 Sports 79 Faculty 103 Advertising 111 days are WBH here; le last ot your springs, in the serenity of this lovely place, the depths o( truth, the hem of Heaven, will go away old. good friends, don't forget when you leave, you came. To everybody; How the hell are 'ya? Me, I’m fine. Certain people have worked all year to compress countless memories into a one-hundred-and-twenty-four page book which you are reading at this very moment. Many people know I like to talk and write and it bugs me in a way that there isn’t enough room to record all the fun or weird moments that happened this year. Who can forget things like Jack Bolsen’s comedy routine at the Talent Show, or the Black guys who broke into the girls’ room in Florida? Or Connie and Emma Lou’s jokes in the lunch line? In 20 years when you’re reading this, u will be surprised that you had forgotten these things. I will miss announcing the basketball games . along-side Greg, fend the daily Greg and Daren Show” every morning. It will be weird to watch homecoming floats go by in the parade and know that I didn’t participate in making one. But, oh well. Whether you are reading this as a graduate, or as a freshman, or as a seventh grader, there is one thing I’d like to tell you to remember, and that is yotl an do anything you want to do in life if you want to do it bad enough. Robert Low said at our NHS induction ceremony this year, “One can count how many seeds are in an apple, but only God can count how many apples are in a seed.’’- Now I know it sounds stupidly philosophical, but just think how many apples you could get if you dared to plant a seed. ell, I had better be going It's time to throw up nd go home Oh, and by the way, ‘7 am free to think my own thoughts, to choose my own way, and to be my own person. That applies to every- one, right angel? Au revoir et a bientot, £ j Todd At the beginning of this year, after the Class of '84 had graduated, for the first few weeks I noticed the spaces they left in the school. However, by the end of the 1st quarter, the spaces had been filled up by someone else, and I found myself forgetting that they had even gone to school here. At the same time I wondered if it would besthe same with me and my friends when we graduated. At football games when I was drum major, old friends would come up to me and say, Hi, Todd, and start talking, and I would have to interrupt them and say, Well, sorry, but I have to go get the band ready.” I sort of pushed them aside and I felt guilty because I didn’t have time to talk with them. Then I wondered if anyone would have time to talk with me after I graduated. It’s a little sad to realize that after spending your life at school, there comes a time to grow older and leave it behind. 4 Editor's Note Henry Todd Atkinson Spanish Club. Scholastic Bowl. Only five or six people had skied before, and as for the rest of us, we were in for the experience of our lives. Behave yourself, Danny The next day we all tried out the next hill, considerably larger and steeper, and obtainable only by the ski lift. Most everyone became master skiers on this hill. However, someone forgot to tell Paulette Bly the route of the hill. Paulette took a wrong turn and was launched into the air. We all looked up to find her twisting and turning silently aloft for a few seconds before she returned to earth on her head. She was delirious for a few moments, rambling about her army days, but she soon recovered and continued skiing. The bus ride to the resort. Some of us are enthusiastic about the trip. We were split up into three groups, each with their own individual instructor. It was quite hilarious to see people lose their balance on the skis. They would shuffle along, and then suddenly, eyes growing wide, they’d give a sharp Yip!” before slowly tipping over into the snow. Once on the ground, they would rest helplessly paralyzed by the length of the skis. So after about what seemed like centuries, everyone finally made it to the baby hill. The instructors taught us all the basics we would need to know to master skiing. Eventually, we worked our way from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill. Oh my God, we were skiing! Well, some of us were. A group of us were at the foot of the hill when the air was suddenly filled with a moan. We whirled around and caught sight of Lyndall Rawlings swiftly gliding out of control straight for Rhonda Clark. To our horror we realized that Lyndall had forgotten how to stop. “Oh noooh!” Lyndall droned as Rhonda struggled to maneu- ver herself from his trajectory. It was hopeless, and Lyndall smashed solidly into her, and there it was, a groaning Lyndall on top of a fallen Rhonda, laying paralyzed in the softly falling snow as we all died laughing. It was but the first of many hilarious moments of our trip. 18 Seniors Captured personalities. To the innocent bystander observing the class of 1985, it must have been like watching a humorous movie. Over there is Teresa Yates, who had fallen down and now was making unearthly screeches in her struggle to get back up. To the right is Judi “Tuba,” who was filling the air with obscenities as she attempted to fix her skis which refused to stay attached. There was Mrs. Overlot, all alone, and still going down the baby hill as slowly as possible. There was Michele Harris, slaloming down the hill in a professional stance with determi- nation frozen on her face of steel. Look over there at that real steep hill! It's Kevin “Death on Skis McReynolds smiling proudly as he descends. Lord have mercy, look out! Greg Bond has wrecked in front of them, and Paul Williams is swerving to avoid Greg. Unfortunately, Paul swerved in front of Kevin, and Kevin has no chance but to slam into Paul. Everyone emerged from the catastrophe mildly unscathed except for Kevin, who must get five stitches for that cut above his eye. It seems his ski whacked him. Oh, well. Judi Tuba and Todd Mrs Overlol and her first 2nd grade class. Mr Overlol and his 25th class. We remind Mrs. Overlot that we were her first 2nd grade class when she began teaching at Bethany 10 years ago. It seems only proper that she joins us on our class trip, with her husband and our sponsor, Buzz. Mr. and Mrs. Miller also are here helping to chaperone us. We would like to thank them for chaperoning our trip. We had the time of our lives, and you can see from these pictures. We still have four more months until we all graduate and part for the last time. It hasn’t yet hit us that our thirteen years together were drawing to a close. I, Curtis Dwayne Robinson, being of sound mind and sound body, will the following: to Mike Sweeney, all the good times and bad times we have had at Todd’s Point; to all the very smart mouthed 7 and 8 graders, the ability to keep their mouth shut; and last, but not least, I will still say after it’s done and over, THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN. I, William J. Shain, will to all my friends the ability to keep the tradition going, and to my brothers Bobby and Steven, all the good memories. I, Wayne Snearly, will to Jim U. and Gary C. the ability to hit running backs, since they already have a good start, and to Jill, to have a great time in her last year at BHS. I, Kelly Waggoner, will to Rachel D. my sense of humor since she had to put up with mine all year. To the freshmen girls a book of Emily Post’s Manners, since they don’t have any! To Allison H. all the class in the world ... think she’ll have enough! I, John Paul Williams, being of sound mind and great body, will my studliness to Mike Atkinson, because I want to. I will my nerves to Shawn Davis because he has a tendency to get on them. I also will my fun times in band to Mike Atkinson, because only he knows the times in band. I will my wardrobe to Mike Tipsword, because his clothes don't prove manhood. I, Todd Yarnell. will if John, Mike, and Dave will. I, Teresa Yates, will Sheri D. my baggy jeans in hopes she will quit wearing tight jeans, I also will Tammy B. my luck in catching a guy like I have, and be able to stick with him. Right: John and Daren making a “special appearance.” We've been together for so long now, for some of us it’s been almost thirteen years. To grow up and share so many treasured memories and wonderful ex- periences together, it makes it all the more hard to say goodbye to one an- other when we graduate and part for the last time. We were only five years old when we met in that kindergarten room, wide-eyed and frightened at the strange new faces. Little did we know then that one day the strangers would grow into the oldest and most cherished friends some of us will ever have. School for some will only be a blessing that it is finally over, but it was here that we spent the most part of our childhood lives. We grew from little toddlers into adolescents. And now we’ve grown into young men and women. A PEEK AT THE PAST . . . Seniors 25 It's only a matter of time before the years will leap away and we will find ourselves reunited, twenty, maybe thirty years from now. One of us will win a prize for travelling the farthest, one of us for the most gray hairs, one of us for the most grandchil- dren. We’ll talk of our jobs and our families, and our health. Then it will grow quiet as someone shouts. “Remember when and we will remember, with a little laugh, or a distant look in our eyes. Maybe seventy-five years from now. one of us will be the lucky one to be recognized at an alumni banquet for being the oldest graduate of Bethany High School. Maybe one of us will be a president. Maybe one of us will be a criminal. Maybe one of us will be a movie star. Or maybe one of us will be a scientist with a revolutionary breakthrough. Or maybe someone not famous or bad. just a quiet person, happy with his family life in a small rural town . . . THEN NOW 26 Seniors So when you flip through these yearbook pages in 1986, or 1997, or 2009, or 2055, whatever the year, take a moment and reflect back to your school days. Let’s keep in touch. This year, NHS had several activities including a Halloween party for faculty, a Christmas party for the elderly, and of course the induction ceremony for the newly elected mem- bers. We did hilarious educational things such as going to Springfield to see an English-Spanish play, we’ve watched Spanish videos, and we've thrown parties. For National Education Week, the Spanish room displayed interesting facts of culture, and a mini-play was put on for all to see. It starred Daren Nelson, Rebecca Dickens. Todd Atkinson, and Paulette Pabloetta” Bly, with Kevin McReynolds as emcee and Felicia Hagerman as director. Front. L to R: Andrea Kroenlein. Mike Bland. Adam McReynolds. Doug Sims. Mike Sweeney. Margaret Fitzgerald. Todd Atkinson. The voila! It was December, and you readers know what that means! The famous Spanish Club Christmas Party. First on the schedule were the pinatas. Yes. indeed, we had three lovely pinatas hanging silently from the ceiling of the room. It would only be a matter of time before they would be rendered into debris. Margaret Fitzgerald and Andrea Kroenlein had their Santa Claus pinata (which they said they made themselves, but they were lying). Todd Atkinson, being so wonderfully goodlooking.was chosen to hit the pinata. and he effortlessly destroyed it as the room scrambled for the scattered candy. Now it was time for the second pinata. engineered and devel- oped by Mike Atkinson and Shawn Davis. It was a wretched pinata. made out of a warped shoe box and decorated with hideous wrapping paper so it would resemble a present. It hung weakly from the ceiling, and before anyone knew what was happening, it was slammed from the sky and crushed by a club-wielding Mike Sweeney. Since the present had been tight- ly wrapped, greedy club members ran to the box and savagely tore off the lid. filling the air with the crumbles of butterscotch lozenges and flattened chocolate balls. Then came the third pinata. the best one of the day. For its destroyer, we all unanimously chose the strongest member of the class, veteran pinata ripper. Kevin Captain Lou Albano McReynolds. Little did Kevin know that the pinata. designed by Allison Harris, had been reinforced with a steel skeleton. Everyone else in the room knew this, though. Mrs. Blackford put the blindfold on Kevin. ‘‘I can still see. Mrs. Beals.” Kevin ejaculated as Mrs. Blackford discovered she had in actuality tied the blindfold around his eyebrows. The room erupted into hysteria. Now Kevin’s eye sighted the pinata. It hung there foreboding, a hideous mon- strosity of blackened papier mache and toilet paper tubes. Rumors had it that it was supposed to be a bull, but everyone agreed that it appeared more to be a satanic turd with a rocket exhaust system. But let’s get back to the action. Three-year, unchallenged dictatorship. President. Todd At- kinson; Vice-President. Daren Nelson; Secretary. Rebecca Dickens; Treasurer. Felicia Hagerman. As the blindfolded Kevin raised his club high to mash the pinata. we all prepared to fun for our lives in case the entire ceiling would come crashing down on us. Suddenly, there was a tremendous explosion as Kevin slammed the pinata. It fired across the room and smashed in a corner. Candy blasted out like shrapnel, and we all received multiple lacerations. The crowd went into mass confusion, screaming, as Kevin stood quietly in the midst, oblivious that the pinata was al- ready gone. This accurate account was brought to you by yours truly. The Bethany Marching Mustangs were selected this year to represent the entire state of Illinois at the 8th Annual World Band Festival in Kissimmee. Florida. This honor was based completely on recommendations and our excellent reputation. When we heard the news in September we were so shocked we were speechless. It was just too good to be true. But we had the time of our lives as you can see from these pictures. On Monday we spent the day at Sea World, and on Tuesday we went to Circus World. Wednesday was spent at Cape Canavral until noon when we visited Cocoa Beach. Thursday we went to EPCOT, and on Friday we went to the Magic Kingdom. Circus World told us that we were the best band they had seen in a year. Our festival director said we were the best behaved band in the history of the organization. And Disney World invited us to come back. The Bethany Marching Mustangs would like to thank the people in Bethany for their support and pride in us. 66 Organizations WELL, WE DID IT! TUMBLES THRU ANOTHER YEAR This year the cheerleaders were fortunate enough to be able to afford to buy new pompons. We had many fundraisers, such as cheerleading clinic, T-shirt sales, button sales, and of course the mums at Homecoming. We attended camp this year and won a spirit stick our third day there. We really had a lot of fun and enjoyed cheering for the teams and with the crowd. Sports 101 This year the squad consisted of five cheerleaders. As a fundraiser we sold knitted hat pins. We had fun cheering for the Yearlings and we hope the 85-86 squad has as much fun as we did. Junior High Cheerleaders 102 Sports SUPERINTENDENT MR. DALE MILLER “TOP CHEESE” As the years melt away with the passing of time, I hope you look back through your yearbook and find the memories happy ones. An anonymous poet once wrote, “Always remember to forget the troubles that passed away, but never forget to remember the bless- ings that come each day.” The days we spend in school, preparing for a productive adulthood should be filled with pleasant memories. As a student, be active in clubs, athletics, music, and devote time to your studies. Your successes here will pay future dividends and become part of those pleasant remem- berences. Superintendent Mrs. Norma Farris Secretary to Mr. Miller 104 Faculty PRINCIPAL MR. JACK REINHART “THE DUDE” Good luck and best wishes to the graduating seniors in their future endeavors.
