I, Paul Bryant, will nothing. I, Mike Carroll, will all my good times to Billie in hope that she will have just as much or more than I did. I, Mike Cuttill, will my curly hair to anybody who wants it, and my ability to bug people, to Robbie Dickens who really doesn’t need it. Also, I will my ability to be a one-time cheerleader to anyone with enough guts to get in the skirt. I, Cheri Funk, will to my sister, Traci, and cousin Rhonda, the ability to cause as much trouble as I did and still stay a brownie. Good-Luck! I also will all of my socks to Peggy Brewer, since that’s all she wears when she goes swimming! And last but not least, I will to Susie Cole the ability to go to McDonald’s 4th hour without my help. The theme of the fair was energy, with the People’s Republic of China being one of the most popular. Adding to the list of famous struc- tures displayed at previous world fairs (including the Eiffel Tower, the Space Needle, and the Statue of Liberty) is the Sunspherc, a 266-foot-high, energy-efficient, five-level globe. The fair ran from May to October, with admission tickets $9.95 each for one day. 14 According to many of the class of '82, much of the material on the preceding page is bull and hype. While all enjoyed the World’s Fair, most agreed it was not what it was cracked up to be. Lines were very long, and few of the actual exhibits were seen. Only two people, Paul Davis and Kelly Traster, actually made it up the Sunsphere. The trip began at midnight on Thursday, the class arriving at the fair on Friday morning. That night the seniors stayed in rented trailers though no one got much sleep. The next day they were back at the fair for more rides, junk food, and dcely- boppers. Arriving in Bethany early Sunday morning, they tiredly went to their homes with many memories of a unique class trip. Watch out for those hose-monsters, Doug! 15 “WE HAVE FOLLOWED • • • Front: Kelly Traster, Kendall Mulvany, Mike Cuttill, Mike Carroll, Scott Martin, Paul Davis, David Yarncll, Greg Brown. They put what in my glass? 19 2002: A Reunion Odyssey We've finally made it to the 20 year of the class of '82. It’s being held at the home of Todd Jones on the last day of his 37th year. He’s over in a corner some where babbling to himself. The entire class is sit- ting on the living room sofa (no big accomplishment), with “The Best of Ozzy Ozborne as performed by Lawrence Welk played as background music. It seems Ozzy died a few years ago in a plane crash. Well, let’s take a look around and see who’s here. There’s Annette Barter ... er... Marshall sitting at the end of the couch. She’s got a secraterial job; right now she’s taking notes on the reunion in case there’s a pop quiz tomorrow. Steve Hower’s at the other end of the couch. The first thing he’s asked everyone is if they want to buy a couple of watches real cheap. His auto-repair shop in Florida didn't do too hot after the State started investigating where he got his brand-new used spare parts. Mike Cuttill just came in, followed very closely by Scott Martin. Mike decided to leave his three kids at home this evening. Scott decided to leave his three kids at home, too. Oh, it seems Mike is going to the bathroom. Surprise, surprise; Scott is going too. But where’s Mike Carroll? He must not have come since he didn’t have anyone to tag along after. The last we heard of Mike, he was the owner of a chain of pet stores called “Pups.” One success story here tonight is Mark Suddarth. He’s a high paid fashion model. He models shoes. Another success story is Kendall Mulvany. He’s now a plastic surgeon. His first operation, of course, was on himself. He now has all his teeth and both of his eyes looking in the same direction. Teresa Bushert and Cindy Snearly were here, but they left half-way through the reunion . .. Well, sinks for coming anyway, guys! Doug Hite just pulled into the parking lot doing 55 in reverse. He is a very well-to-do construction contractor; he builds big “how-ses.” Cheri Funk is now a model for Cover Girl. She’s in the dining room showing how to put on the latest line of cosmetics with a mascara brush and a putty knife. Too bad Jon Nation couldn’t be here tonight. Remember when we use to think he was crazy? Well, now he has a nice view of the lake from his padded cell number 37 in Bellview. Kim Gregory came in with her new husband. He’s 89 years old. Looks like Kim finally gave in to one of those guys at the nursing home. Paul Davis isn’t here yet. He’s still out in the parking lot, thinking he’s King Arthur slaying Lisa Bailey’s car, the Green Grenade. Sister Sherry Tipsword is here, but she can’t stay for long because she has to go to mass early in the morning. Besides, those nun’s clothes are uncomfortable. During the evening, those of us at the reunion got a big surprise when we turned on the T.V. There was the Rev. Kelly Traster preaching on the television. He’s a big television evangelist for the Church of the Latter Day Hog Farmers. Mark Bandy couldn’t be here tonight. He’s trying to set a world’s record for attending the most rock concerts in a life time. Greg Brown wins the honors for coming the longest distance to the reunion. Greg is a mountain man in the Colorado Rockies where he checks traps — other peoples traps. Paul Bryant couldn’t be here with us this year, or any other year for that matter. It seems Paul’s wife left him a couple of years ago, and Paul, overcome with grief, committed suicide by walking into a black ghetto in Chicago and shouting “Kum-belli, kum-belli, photon, yo’ mama!” Oh, Bill Larkin’s here, too. You remember Bill; all he ever did was listen to hard rock. Poor Bill — he’s a vegatable now. All that loud music turned his brain into jelly. Quick, someone wipe that drool off his chin! There’s Max Lappin, crewcut and all. From what we here, Max is still a private in the Marines; he gets sea-sick on a ship in drydock. We just got a call from David Yarnell. It seems that it’s snowing out his way and he tried taking a short-cut through someone’s field in his truck. He’ll be a little late. Joe Moon is the only one not accounted for tonight. It’s rumoured that big city life Finally got to him and now is living in a religious commune in California and has a very severe morphine habit. Oh, and by the way, all of this information was taken from Annette Barter’s notes. Relax, Annette. There’s no quiz tomorrow. Respecfully Prophesied, Joe Moon and Jon Nation. 20 OUR JUNIOR YEAR: A HARVEST Mindy Peggy Bone Brewer Steve Austin Bret Bone Sue Alexander Bill Rich Camfield Camficld Christina Susan Carroll Cole Angie Butt Lcann Calhoun 22 OF GOOD TIMES Steve Brett Ozec Robinson Tina Jackie Root Sheehan Lori Jennifer Suddarth Taylor Lisa Tipsword Greg Waggoner Tracey Wehncr Lori Wiszo-Waty Bill Younger Dwaine Throneburg Class Officers T to B: President: Brian Coleman Vice-President: Mindy Bone Secretary: Chritina Carroll Treasurer: Lcann Calhoun Reporter: Angie Bull To the Class of 83: Since our freshman year, we've had some great times and achieved many goals. We made new friends and found that high school wasn’t that bad after all. During Homecoming week, the girls, with their faces painted like animals, and the boys, with their hair greased back 50’s style, discovered what it was like to be initiated. Para Explicarse Este Titub Tome el Espanol el Proximo Ano 44 On October 21, 1981, the Spanish Club went to see a performance of Spanish dancers at the Masonic Temple in Decatur. Also, at the same location on March 11, 1982, we saw the performance of Don Quixote, the legendary knight who attacked windmills. We were planning on a Mexican Christmas party, but unfortunately the day that we were going to have it, it snowed, so we had it the next day. Instead of having our huge Mexican dinner as planned, we ended up eating tortilla chips and Pepsi. Luckily, we still had the pinata. Since there was no good place to tie the pinata, we tied it to the lights. We chose Kevin McReynolds as the first clubber. Then we blindfolded him, and the instant we set him free, he lunged forward and viciously winged the club with locomotive-out-of-control speed and bludgeoned the poor pinata. To our hor- ror, the light to which the pinata was attached lurched forward as we screamed to remove ourselves from Kevin's path of destruction. Kevin, who thought he destroyed the candy- filled pinata, whipped off his blindfold and looked around the room in a mad fury, hoping to find the destroyed pinata and its spewed candy. Instead, he found the room in total devastation and the rest of us pale with horror, as the startled pinata swang content above our heads, unharmed. Some of the activities planned were: Dad's date night, Tom Watt sales, the Easter egg hunt. The Style show, and the Mother-Daughter Ban- quet. The Mother-Daughter Ban- quet was a sad time for saying good-bye to the seniors but a hap- py time when the new officers were installed; the new chapter sisters and chapter mothers were present and everyone's looking toward a new year. The Bethany High School Band has worked hard, performed, and competed at many placed this year. The marching band went to Shelbyvillc in September for an exibition of our field show and parade marching. We received a 1st place rating in parade marching. Then, in October, the marching band went to E.I.U. and received 1st runner-up in our field show. In March, our annual High School solo and ensemble contest was held at Millikin University in Decatur. In April, we had our concert band contest at E.I.U. We turned out to be the only band to get a first place the whole day, and we even had a first in every category. When we learned of our superb performance, we grab- bed our Bethany Band jackets, put them on, and strut- ted around campus like the cool band members we are, even though the outside temperature was 80 degrees. 51 “CHORUS — PUTTING THEIR BEST Swing Choir: 1st Row: Tim Moore, Kim Gregory, Barry Coleman, Missy Bone, Todd Atkinson, Mindy Bone. 2nd Row: John Bartimus, Christina Carroll, Laura Craig, Jennifer Dudley, Kathy Ray. 3rd Row: Jackie Sheehan, Brian Coleman, Lori Wiszo-Waty, Jana Foster, Danny Snyder, David Hagerman, Sherry Tipsword, Mike Atkinson. This year’s Mustang basketball squad showed a great fighting spirit despite being shorter than most of the teams we played; we held our own. We were win- ners of the Sullivan Thanksgiving Tourney and finish- ed in 4th place in the Meridian Conference. This team was a pleasure to watch as they never gave up in a game no matter what the score and always gave 100% both in practice and in our games. They can truly hold their heads high for they represented our school with honor. The Fillies: One Big On a basketball team we all grow close and become a big fami- ly. A member of our family this year, Senior Lisa Bailey, is leav- ing. We’ve grown close to Lisa in our own individual ways. Even though she might not have played as much as the underclassmen, she never criticized but always cheered us on. Good luck to Lisa in her future career; we wish her only what she deserves: happiness and the best of everything. We love ya, Lisa. 70 Left to Right: Kelly Adams. We put in a lot of hard work but it paid off when we had our first game against Shclbyville and won. We've been rebuilding our team after last year's try- ing season, and we seem to get better each year. This year the varsity was 12 and 12 and the J.V. 11 and 6. We won our first game of the regional against Atwood but lost the second game against Sullivan. We'll be back with the same players, and we'll be bigger and better and ready for the new year. It looks like our Mustang team will be pretty tough in a couple of years. 75 B.H.S. TRACKSTERS HAVE For the first time in many years B.H.S. sent a boy’s track member to the State Track Meet in Charleston. He was Paul Nation. Paul ran the 400 meters at the State Track Meet and finished 7th in his heat. Paul is only a sophomore and will more than likely be going back in the next 2 years. Paul also qualified for the Area Best meet at Millikin University in the 100, 200, and 400 meters. He set the school and Meridian Conference records in the 400 meters. Other records set were: the 400 meter relay by the team of Paul Nation, Kendall Mulvany, Darryll Kelly, and Tim Moore and the 2 mile record was broken twice this year, first by Tony Moon and then again by Darryll Kelly. We are very proud of these young men and all of the effort everyone put forth and hope that they will have a successful season next year. Bill Younger gets ready to throw the discus. Though we were small on people, we feel we gave it our all. This year we had a new coach so we had to help her on who could do what. She usually stuck us in events which we had never done before, but we never complained. Our team contained 3 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 5 freshmen. For the freshmen it was new experiences. This year's team, coached by Phil Banning, ended the season with 4 wins and 7 losses. The season was suc- cessful though because the Mustangs made it to the quarterfinals of the Regional Tournament. In the first round there the boys left the Areola Purple Riders stan- ding in a daze as the Mustangs scored 14 runs to their I. The next game was against the Shclbyvillc Rams which had to be played without the help of the 4 senior players who were on their Senior Trip. They lost the game 6-0. Three team members were selected to the all- conference team. These were: Mike Cuttill — 1st team catcher: Jr Throneburg — 2nd team pitcher; Scott Mar- tin — 2nd team infielder.
