Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1980 volume:

Our life is not a mere fact; it is a movement, a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress toward an unseen goal. To desire and strive to be of some service to the world, to aim at doing something which shall really increase the happiness and welfare and virtue of mankind this is a choice which is possible for all of us; and surely it is a good haven to grow for. Our team still has the skill, strategy, and stamina to win—we just had a bad year. Every team can come back and we will next year. The season opened with the Areola game. We made a good show but failed to win the game. We weren't as excited about the football season when defeated by Lovington in the homecoming game. We may not have won a game this year, but the football team has won the hearts of all of the Mustang fans. Action is the name of the game! Todd Dudley, 41 attempts to block a pass. Brian Elder makes a good tackle. No. 34, Chris Stiles takes charge on the side lines. • V ■ Top row: Coach Hurdle, Alan Keown, Todd Dudley, Jon Bushert, Chris Stiles, Stan Smith, Doug Morris, Tim Florey, Brad Elder, Jeff Cuttill, Jim Waggoner, Tim Marshall, Mike Fitzgerald, Middle row: Coach Inman, Scott Martin, Kelly Traster, Kendall Mulvany, Chet Swarms, Roy Jones, Jeff Utsler, Brian Elder, Paul Bone, Rick Grove, Bill Larkin, Doug Hite, Jon Nation, Mike Carroll Bottom row: Chris Da- vis, Bill Camfield, Brian Coleman, Rich Camfield, Brett Rob- inson, Steve Austin, Mike Beasley, David Luck, Brett Bone, Greg Waggoner, Barry Coleman, and Steve Hower. The senior players are honored at the last home game. Those honored were: Alan Keown, Todd Dudley, Jon Bushert, Chris Stiles, Stan Smith, Doug Morris, Tim Florey, Brad Elder, Jeff Cuttill, Jim Waggoner, Tim Marshall, and Mike Fitsgerald. Was that for me? Coach Hurdle and Coach Inman look over the football plays. u After good pursuit the Mustangs force down their opponent. Wipe out! Get off your can, man! MERIDIAN CHAMPS Coach: Randy Inman Our 1979-1980 Mustangs were definitely ready for the 80's as we compiled a perfect 11-0 record in the tough Meridian Conference. We also finished 21- 4 which included a nice 19 game winning streak. We accomplished these feats by working hard every night, playing excellent defense, believing that we were better than the team we faced every night out; and we were as Sister Sledge said a Family . Our players can truly hold their heads high and proclaim I am a winner, I am a MUSTANG! Doug Morris SENIORS Doug Morris—Doug is a competitor from the word go. He provided us with some excellent play coming off the bench. He is a fine rebounder and defensive player. He is a leader and will be missed. Bart Spencer— Instant offensive is the term that best describes Bart. He is an electrifying person who can knock it down from 18 or use in excellent jumping to slam dunk off the break. Bart possessed probably the best over- all tools in the league and was a 2nd team All-Conference and our co. M.V.P. pick. His offensive talents will be hard to replace. Bart Spencer ) 16 Manager: Tom Hower Tom Hower—Tom was this year's Mustang manager. He was the classics dressed manager in the league and a lot of thanks goes to Tom and his help with the team. Chris Stiles—Chris, I felt, was the heart of this fine team. Game in and game out he gave us the steady play we needed to win. He was the best de- fensive player in the league and won our Best Defensive Player award. His loss will be hard for us to overcome as we must find a new leader. JUNIORS AND SENIORS Chris Stiles Paul Bone Rick Grove David Hite Jeff Bone Mike Carroll Kendall Mulvany Scott Martin NO PICTURE AVAILABLE 17 Bart gets the net! Bart goes up! What is it??? Top left: Coach Inman, Dave Hite, Doug Morris, Chris Stiles, Paul Bone, Jeff Bone, Rick Grove, Bart Spencer, Manager: Tom Hower, Ken- dall Mulvany, Scott Martin, Mike Carroll. 18 DEVELOPING NEW SKILLS The point guards are Scott Martin, Steve Austin, and Greg Waggoner. Scott Martin's progress in ball handling has settled down our offense. On defense he is most likely to be seen diving for loose balls and ball hawking. Steve Austin, who is cast from the same mold as Scott, has the quickest hands on the team and leads the freshmen in scoring. Greg Waggoner is our other point guard and if the game seems sluggish we just insert him into the lineup and things automatically start to happen. The wing men are primarily responsible for defensive pressure and carrying the scoring load. Mike Carroll and Dwaine Throneburg lead the team in scoring and shooting percentage. Mike is a good jump shooter from the perimeter while in contrast Dwaine will drive to the basket. When Brett Robinson substitutes for either Mike or Dwaine, our team gains more rebounding power and does not lose much in offense. Chris Davis has improved more on of- fense than any other player and it can be directly attributed to his desire to better himself. The big men on our team are Kendall Mulvany, Bill Larkin, Mark Suddarth, Roger Doris and Bill Younger. Kendall has the toughest assignment in every game and that is to guard the tallest and best player on the other team. He consistantly gives our team a solid defense and rebounding job. Bill Larkin has improved his total game more than anyone on the team. He gets more assertive with every game. We can expect more and better things from Bill because he does not want to let his teammates down. Mark Suddarth will be seeing more playing time because he needs more experience to get the feel of playing against players his si e. Bill Younger is the most improved freshman which can be attributed to his increased aggres- siveness. Roger Doris starts on the freshman team and is responsible for doing the bulk of the rebounding. The most important lesson that this group of young men has learned is that when they step into a game they cannot give less than 100 per cent hustle and still win. It's Keebler Elf! 1st row: Roger Doris, Mike Carroll, Scott Martin, Steve Austin, Greg Waggoner. Manager Mike Beasley, Chris Davis, Kendall Mulvany, Brett Robinson, Bill Larkin, Dwaine Throneburg, Mark Suddarth, Bill Younger, Mr. Inman. 19 REGIONAL CHAMPS Back row left to right. Seniors 20 You Went A Long Way KabyS The Bethany Flying Fillies finished their season with a 17-10 record. The Fillies fought hard and went a long way. After defeating Sullivan and Ar- thur in the regional tourney at Sullivan, they trav- eled to Tolono for the Sectional. After a tough bat- tle the Fillies were defeated by Jamaca-Sidell 73-69 in overtime. This years Fillies went farther than any team from Bethany has ever gone. Aside from bringing home the trophies from winning the re- gional and getting 2nd place in the sectional, they also brought home trophies from 5th place in the Newton Holiday tourney and 1st place in the Areola tourney. The Fillies were led by Jodi Foster who set two state records. Her four year career total was a record 2,371 points and her season total was a record 867 points. She received the free throw award for three years and the most valuable player award all four years. She was chosen to be on the Chicago Tribune All-State Team and was selected as one of the top 15 players in the state by the Champaign News Ga- zette. The Decatur Herald named her to be the area player of the year. Congratulations to the Flying Fillies for a super season! Senior night The sad ending of a great season. We feel that a house and home aren't the same. Some of our activities this year included the Fall Rally, FHA week, the Style Show, the Easter Egg Hunt and the Spring Banquet. We've had to do away with many of our events because of lack of funds and new school rules but, we still make the best of what we do have. Each year we select two chapter mothers and two chapter sisters. This year they were Mrs. Sharp and Mrs. Moon, Cara Carter and Diane Jenkins. It has been a pleasure to know each member of the Bethany student body. The class is gathering at Tim KidwelTs bar, “The Gulp Slurp , in the heart of downtown Milwaukee. Unfortunately Tim couldn't be with us tonight because he is attending an AA meeting next- door. Guest speaker at the meeting is BHS's own Jim Waggoner. His topic: The Hazards of Miller Ponies . Filling in for Kidwell is Tim Tweetus Marshall, Asst. Manager. Air transportation for tonight was provided by Big Bird Airlines , compliments of Marleia Russell, owner. Transportation from tne airport was donated by Buffy's Taxi Service , owned and operated by Jeff and Eleanor (Daniels) Cuttill. They now own a fleet of 20 yellow pickups. (Eleanor rides shotgun on request.) Joey Beachy couldn't make it tonight because Star Wars is showing on TV for the 32nd time this year. Of course he sent a note from his mother. Alan Keown has arrived but hasn't come in yet. We have been informed that he is out in his car smoking his last cigarette and listening to Black Sabbath. Schell Bolin and Eric Allsop are here all the way from Roach Clip, Arizona where they live on the reservation of the Tokumlof Indian tribe. Todd Harris just came dragging in covered with mud. He says he got his dad's Pinto stuck in a nearby government parking lot. Speaking of dragging, Debbie Haney was the first to arrive tonight in her new Formula dragster. Her guest this evening is Big Daddy Don Garlits. Suddenly there is a loud CRASH!! We see Todd Dudley sprawled out on the Floor. Oh well, he should have known better than to take Brad Elder's seat again! We're glad to see Kelly Moon here tonight—Stand up Kelly—What?—You are?—Oh. Dee Suddarth is here tonight. She brought her mother along to take pictures for the Echo. Jodi Foster, Angie Davis Lori Friesner called and said they'd be a little late. It seems their round-robin Nerf basketball tournament back in their hotel room is taking longer than expected due to numerous jump balls. We're proud to have the Chicago Hustle Woman's Pro Basketball team and Head Coach Michelle Gooden here tonight. When they got off the bus, Michelle scolded them for traveling. Mike Fitzgerald and Tom Sheehan just pulled up in their new Yamaha SRX, fuel injected, duel carb, high performance, heavy duty, racer-style snowmobiles. Funny thing is, there hasn't been an inch of snow in Milwaukee all year. Scientist Marsha Newton has recently received a Nobel Prize for discovering the cure for chicken pox. She has since admitted that she stole the formula from Stan Smith, world reknown computer programmer. Stan has an interesting technique. He simply plugs the computer into his brain and it is instantly programmed. Theresa Apke, now famous playwrite, recently boosted her career by writing, producing, and directing the box office hit, EARS , starring Tim Florey. We've just received word that Darla Williamson will be DROPPING IN in any moment. She is reportedly standing on the ledge outside her 20th story hotel room. It seems someone locked her door from the outside and left her. Joann Candage and Buddy Sanders are boycotting the reunion because we wouldn't play disco! The bleachers along the wall are there for the family of Doug and Libby (Larkin) Morris and the Tom Hower Family. We hope there is enough room!! Chris Jack Stiles was late getting here tonight because he was ambushed on the way in by a cardboard box and a trash can seeking revenge. Jon Bushert, professional taste-tester for Skoal, Inc. left early tonight because we didn't have any spitoons. CBS's famous female sportscaster Jeanne Luck had to be out of town tonight to cover the World Powerlifting Championships where Mitch Powell is attempting to break the World Flyweight record by lifting 101 lbs. over his head. GOOD LUCK MITCH! Julie Austin and Steve Bone weren't able to be here tonight because they are 'getting stoned' at an Archaeology Dig. The big crowd here tonight has kept the Gulp and Slurp's cocktail waitress Shela Hutchcraft running. (Mainly orders for Miller Ponies fron that AA meeting next-door.) Mike Andrews showed up as everyone else was leaving. He said he had to take it slow on his new Harley-Davidson because the training wheels are beginning to come loose. Oh, Bart and Sue (Davis) Spencer didn't come tonight. It seems they insisted on holding their own 20th class reunion in Bart's basement! finished 3 13 80 by Morris Fitz 75 Nicest Smile: Joann Candage Jon Bushart Best All Around: Joann Candage Buddy Sanders SENIOR PERSONALITY Best Dancers: Buddy Sanders Joann Candage Biggest Flirts: Tom Sheehan Debbie Haney Wittiest: Lori Freisner Tom Sheehan Most Daring: Lori Freisner Tom Sheehan Best Personality: Joann Candage Buddy Sanders Best Physique: Joann Candage Chris Stiles 76 Prettiest Legs: Chris Stiles Joann Candage Best Drivers: Todd Dudley Angie Davis Todd Harris Lori Freisner Most Athletic: Jodi Foster Chris Stiles Coolest Hairdo: Most Likely To Be Missed: Brad Elder Marleia Russell Best Sportsmanship: Jodi Foster Doug Morris Best Dressed: Joann Candage Buddy Sanders 77 DAWN OF A Presenting the Class of 1980, our leaders of tomorrow. Juniors 85 JUNIORS—WORKING HARD AND HAVING FUN The Junior Class of 1979-80 has a special quality—we can make anything fun. We realize we'll be out of here soon, so we want to make our last years the best. We look at being juniors as a challenge: a challenge to make decisions, accomplish goals and make school a fun place to remember. We have met many challenges and will meet more in the future. We will meet each challenge one by one and hopefully be victorious with each. Our class is a class of achievement. We have musical, atheltic, and scholastic ability. These abilities will pre- vail as we go on with our future plans. We are a class that cares. We don't let a problem slip by without it being noticed. We try to help each other out in times of need. To describe the personality of the class as a whole we would have to say that unpredict- able fits us all. We have always been a close group in terms of friendship. We're looking forward to our last year at BHS with high hopes and goals. Many can't wait to graduate, but we make the best of it and try to make every minute count. We're sure that we'll leave this school with many happy memories. On the preceding page are our class officers: Pres. Sally Boyer; V. Pres. Paul Bone; Sec. Cheri Lambird; Treas. Rick Grove; Rep. Ansell joined the Personnel of Bethany High School in 1971. He worked in the school for eight years. Not only was Ansell a custodian, he was also a Jack-of-All-T rades. We all knew Ansell personally and deeply feel the loss of his familiar pres- ence. To honor his memory, we respectfully dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Ansell Phillippo.
