•u:-' ,r Keverie Involving the Members of a Com- munity, a Center of Cearning Strives for Excellence. Jt’s Ultimate (foal the Education of Each Student Js a Separate Individual-, the Zenith of Jts Existence. Uethany High School Methany, Illinois Memories Someday when it is over and we are gone astray we’ll look back in our yearbooks to the memories of today We’ll tell our little children that school was such a blast but forget that we also hated it till it was past Now that our classmates have gone their separate ways we’ll look into our yearbooks and enjoy the good-ole-days. Our Thoughts, Sights and Sounds . . . Memories of the years gone by. The laughter, the tears, behind us now, The future is ours. The people are gone, it’s sum- mer now, Empty footsteps echo, in the abandoned gym. Remembering the excitement of the games, the pride of all the honors. Never more to see any excite- ment, till the next group of people inhabit it. And the excitement begins Again. Marcia Dick The halls are ringing empty now, the voices are all gone. The old abandoned school house sits lonely on the lawn. There are no more classes held. The chalkboards arc all clean. All that’s left are shadows of a part no longer seen. The shadows are of memories, and are still lingering there. To help the students of the past in their future live to fare. Anonymous A Winter Night It was a bitter, cold, winter night. The sky was pitch black, as the stars began to mysterious- ly fade away. Tiny flakes of snow fell on my body that seemed ice cold. The snow on the ground glistened in the bright yellow light that the moon provided. The wind fierce- ly slapped my cheek as it left a hurting sting that made my face turn red. It was hard to keep my balance because the road was like a sheet of ice. Walking along the big fluffy snowdrifts, 1 looked up to the sky and noticed the first rays of sunlight peeking through the clouds for an early morning dawn. Leanne Austin 2 The Sounds of Morning The dark clouds of night part to reveal a golden fiery sun. All is tranquil in this coming dawn. Suddenly the birds awaken from their silent slumber to sing of the new day. The buzz of the honeybees collecting their nectar compares to an accordianist mu- sic. A gentle swell of the breeze rustles the leaves in their applause to the morning glory. An old tractor struggling to start finally roars into action. It is peaceful here where I stand listening to the sounds of morning 1 realize soon the mid-day activities will shatter the calm, so I appreciate its beauty while I can. Cheri Lambird Just Dust in the Wind We are just a drop of water, in an endless and wide ocean. We are just a drop of water in a barren and lonely desert. We are just a face, in so many different, and yet beautiful faces. We are just a world, in the gar- gantuant space of the universe. We are just one word, in the whole word of all the different words. We are just dust in the wind, blowing around, yet not going anywhere at all. Just stopping for rest, once in a lifetime, then to be picked up again by a whole different, and yet interesting breeze. Amy Ford Time If I could place a wish now, it would be for me. It would be to have more time, if only it could be. Or just to understand it, how it flies so fast? where does it go to, when it’s in the past? Really people waste it. It’s valuable to me. I wish and need more of it. If only it could be. Sue Sharp The sun is hot, it’s shining down upon me in this ancient town. Here I dig, and sweat, and toil, making maps of “in situ” soil. Inch by inch, down we go, to uncover secrets hidden below. And when by chance a fact is found, It improves our picture of this archaic mound. Steve Bone 3 Although 1 dread the ’morrow, Everything must go on. Making joy out of the sorrow, As each new day will dawn. And since our time is almost o’er, We never waste a day. Dimly ahead we see the shore, As our tide ebbs away. Julie Austin The sky is edged in silvery lace, Pink and gold clouds are reflect- ed on your face. The sky turns red and in a blink, it’s gone. How very beautiful, the coming of the dawn. The dew is glittering on the grass As 1 think of all that has come to pass. Sunshine awakens the sleeping flowers As time takes away our few precious hours. Julie Austin Here Comes The Bride Lace and locket, Full of pride. Veil and gown, Here comes the bride. Standing tall, In a lighted room. Dark and handsome, And here’s the groom. First the vows. Then the prayer, Finally the kiss, That they will share. The years passed by, With love and fun. And there came a day, When they had a son. Days went by, With lots of laughter, And so did the months, That followed after. Their son is grown up now, And stands with pride, At the front of a church, And here comes the bride. Kathy Moon A View From Transfere Hesperus above the hogback and Sharkstooth on beyond. Above the Mancos Canyon- silhouetted by the dawn. The aspen and the wild flowers are here with me below. They look on with “dew” respect at the mountains misty glow. Time moves on, leaving the dawn, and bringing the sunset nigh. The flowers fold upon themselves and the aspen quake goodbye. Steve Bone Flowing Waters The brook seeps by quietly Not lost but really found It seems so very gentle As the sun shines down The pond is even longer and As I sit on the bank My thoughts grew even stronger As deeper and deeper they sank The river is so wide It flows hard and strong The current is eternal As it sings its song The ocean is vast You can’t even see the end Watching it you lose yourself As deeper your thoughts bend. To the teachers, students and friends of the Bethany High School: The idea to come here began some years ago when I learned about Y. F. U. (youth for understanding) and the Foreign Exchange Program of the young people across the world-the decision was easy, because I wanted to come to America, not as a tourist, but to learn the way of life and the customs of the people of this great country. I want to share this knowledge with the people in my home. I left my country January 12, 1978 with 180 excited Y. F. U. students and stayed for 6 months with an America family. Since I first arrived at the airport I have been happy and I have enjoyed my family and friends here in Bethany. The excitement of the senior trip, Prom and Graduation all were new for me. I was surprised when I saw Bethany with the farms as pretty small town, without skyscrapers. I was really happy here and with its friendly people. I think Y.F.U. is a great organization that brings you the opportunity to know another country’s and to better under- stand and communicate between the people of other lands. If someone were to ask what I liked most about Illinois I would say the friendly people and the snow. Now I only have left a few days in America and I can say: “This time has been really wonderful and always will remain as one of my most important and exciting memories of my life. For me, Bethany, American people and Y. F. U. are greats. With Love, Gisselle 19 Zhe Active Classes Student teachers are kids at heart. Mr. Miller, boy’s P. E. All in a day’s work. After 20 years the Bethany High School’s own Class of “78” is reuniting at Caesar’s Palace” owned by Steve Cribbet, I guess saving your money can get you somewhere. Tony and Kim Rauch just arrived riding their Harley Hogs. They and their family have formed their own motorcycle gang. Tanya Andrews is here tonight after recently being promoted to Head Secretary of B.H.S. after Mrs. Roby announced her re- tirement. David Brewer, who is well known for his New Years Festivities as Guy Lombardo, is talking to Diane Lumsden about some of her Non-supportive New Years Resolutions. David is discussing some uplifting resolutions for her in the future. Cindy Florey and Brian Harshman are here tonight. They own a new shoe company where they have invented a shoe that makes everyone the same height. Paul Hofrieter was going to be here tonight but he couldn’t get his car slowed down enough to get out. For those of you who haven’t heard Gwen Burrows met with a terrible fate while attempting a world’s record in truck roll- ing!!!!! She shattered the old record of 31 rolls by rolling 63 times, unfortunately she was disqualified for living through it! Tim Dudley is here tonight, just returning from lecturing on his new book, “Pizazz, and What To Do With It.” Theresa Moore and Brenda Standerfer now do commercials for suntan lotion companies. Brenda does BEFORE and Theresa does AFTER!!!! Shelli Kates is here tonight but she’s having trouble getting served at the bar. Mary Ann Murphy and Leesa Freeland couldn’t be here tonight, they are working in their Mechanics shop preparing their cars for the Indy 500. It seems the more Mary Ann repairs it, the more Leesa tears it up!! Debbie Gregory is here with her kindergarten students. She is showing them The Disciplinary Rules of the Air Force as in- structed by Major Chris Reeter. Mark Brewer isn’t here yet but someone told me they saw him trying to thumb rides out here. I guess he just can’t seem to get ahead of his speeding tickets. Now back to the quieter side of the evening. Nancy Hill is here but her husband is outside with all their children trying to find a parking space big enough for the bus. Dr. David Beasley from the Royal Academy of Films just returned from England where he wrote, directed and starred in the sequel to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it’s called, “How to Sweat In Three Different Languages.” David (Murry) Kidwell is here tonight but I haven’t seen much of him, he’s been staying pretty close to the bar. Glenda Throneburg just came from Mexico after being released for smuggling an alien across the border. Terry Walker is here, closing his new barber shop. He has a new spray that he puts on his chair, instead of the dry look it’s called the oily look. Kenny Jones is laid up in the hospital after an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Grand Canyon on a paper airplane. Andy Bone, now a professional truck driver, for the Clairol Corporation, is in the bathroom combing his hair. Giselle Rosende is having a nice conversation with the bartender after she finally mastered the English language. Kevin Coon is now running a chain of Little Bud’s Bait Shops. Kevin gets his bait wholesale from Spencer’s Bait Co., which is run by Bret. Bret’s specialty is home grown crawlers. Larry Robbins just announced he has finally found his 7th grade term paper but Miss Tucker... I mean Price ... 1 mean Duncan ... wouldn’t accept it. It’s amazing after all these years, it really was in the back of the station wagon!! Patti Friesner is here tonight by herself so she can flirt with everyone’s husbands. Mark Bennet, one of America’s most prominent scientists, just proved that it IS possible to wear Size 33 Triple D Sneakers! Rob Kates is here despite the fact that there would be no mayonaise available for his carrots. Deanna Sullivan and Steve Davis are arguing over who had the most unique arrival. It seems that after work at the Post Office last night, Deanna got in a crate and mailed herself first class. But Steve thinks that pole vaulting through a second story window is better. This flash was brought to you by me, Alan Utsler, now I’m President of the American Joggers Association, I can jog for two miles at a time. 34 the members of the Senior Class of 1978 of Bethany High School, being of good health and of sound dis- posing mind and memory, and believing in the certainty our soon departure from the aforesaid, do hereby make and declare this instrument of writing to be our last will and testament as Seniors and students of B.H.S. We are the three men respon- sible for the termination of most men’s lives. There is only one other in existence that has our special talent and flair for our un- usual vocation. That is our sister Tranquille De Muerta but due to differences we are unable to work together. You see she is much too gentle and ladylike for our needs. She doesn’t agree with our philosophies about this business of ours and unless we are in to- tal compliance we won’t be suc- cessful. Even we three brothers don’t work together very often for those same reasons. But to get back to the original point all men have an appointment with us eventually! If one of the bro- thers doesn’t accommodate you our sister will. You see we are responsible for arranging the deaths of everyone ever bom on this earth. First, let me clarify that we do not kill people, we only ar- range their deaths and the part of their lives that precedes their death. We each have our own particu- lar preference in the methods we use. You see I attempt to be mer- ciful to those I deal with. It is my trademark to allow a bit of happiness or hope to enter the lives of those and terminate. My brother Diablo is not as merciful but he is not cruel either. He finishes his jobs quick- ly but attempts to make people unhappy before their death. But by far the most infamous is our brother Vida. He causes in- tense suffering and sadness. He prolongs a death over several years in order to appesse his own sadistic humor. It is Vida that gives Death a bad name. His ma- jor allies are Disease and Hunger and because of this Vida is for- saken by the rest of their family. Our sister Tranquille more than makes up for us though. She allows a person to die quickly, and painlessly, usually in their own bed. And for this she is most respected member of our family. You see she is the equalizer that smooths out our family dif- ferences. If it weren’t for the Tranquille our jobs would soon end because of our brothers pre- ferences. Dan Beasely THE LESSON OF IGNATZ BUFFETT Once upon a time (as all stor- ies should begin, but never do) there lived a simple, down-to- earth yokel by the name of Ig- natz Buffett, an unusual looking fellow with bi-focals, a wrinkled face, and a goat-like beard. The young children around Ignatz home town, Whiskerville, looked to Ignatz as a “wise, old man.” And Ignatz lived by that sobri- quet. Witness the lesson of the young girl with three suitors. “Oh, Ignatz,” she wept, “they all say they love me. But how to know that?” And Ignatz, wise Ignatz, said, “Once, three learned men were told by a doctor that they had only one month live. Because these three men were of great benefit to the world, they were each granted to one thing they wanted before they died. The first learned man wanted to spend his last days with a harem of beautiful women, which seemed a wise choice. The sec- ond learned man wanted to visit a place he had never been before, just to see what it was like, which seemed also a wise choice. But the third learned man made perhaps the wisest choice of all.” “And what was that?” asked the sorrowful girl. “The third wise man wanted the opinion of a second doctor.” Tim Moon 38 Sophomores Eric Allsop Mike Andrews Theresa Apke Julie Austin Joey Beachy Schell Bolin Steve Bone Jon Bushert Edye Candage Joann Candage Julie Carlyle Tersa Coon Jeff Cuttill Eleanor Daniels Angie Davis Suzan Davis Todd Dudley Brad Elder Mike Fitzgerald Tim Florey Jodi Foster Lori Friesner Michelle Gooden Todd Harris Tammy Hayes Thomas Hower Shela Hutchcraft Alan Keown Tim Kidwell Elizabeth Larkin Jeanie Luck Tim Marshall Kelly Moon Doug Morris Marsha Newton Darla O’Bryan Mitch Powell Marleia Russell Buddy Sanders Tom Sheehan 40 Sophomores Stan Smith Bart Spencer Chris Stiles Dee Suddarth Jim Waggoner Lori Wheeler Darla Williamson Rusty Williams Not Quite Making It Tony Antwot sat there in the airplane staring into space won- dering what life was going to do to him now. Going home after three miserable years away from his wife and kids and hoping he would be accepted again. The on- ly thing is, he left them without the least of a word and was a gambler on his way down in life. Now he was coming home a changed man with his past be- hind him and ready to make a step forward in life. He needed his family to help him through his new life. He sat there trying to anticipate what was going to be said when he got home. Then a colored man stands up with a gun in his hand and grabs a stew- ardess. Telling everyone to stay seated, she leads him to the pi- lots’s quarters. The hijacker tells the pilot to turn the plane around and head towards Cuba. If they don’t do what he commands, he will kill everyone on the plane. Tony sat calmly as the hijacker paced the aisles. Knowing he had to do something he decided to jump the hijacker from behind. Without hesitation he jumped the man as a shot from the gun went sailing wildly. They struggled each other to the floor as both fought for the gun. Suddenly a shot went off, and then another as the two men separated and the gun slid down the aisle. Alertly, a passenger grabbed the gun and held it on the hijacker. Tony lied on the floor gasping for air as a bullet was sunk in the middle of his chest. He thought about his wife and kids as he got a picture in his head of all of them stand- ing at home hugging each other. Anticipating that he would never see his family again, tears came into his eyes as one last sharp pain came in his chest. As the plane landed safely, Tony Antwot was dead. Life is Time The day is done, The words at rest, We each have tried. To do our best, To make each day, One to remember, From January first. To the end of December, The days are long. The weeks go fast, Before you know it, The year has passed, Time goes on, and on, and on, Another is gone, So live each day, With love and you, Because life is time, Not a toy. The winters wind cut through me cold as ice. The snow was accumulating very rapidly as it was coming down dancing with the wind. As I neared home, 1 saw two eyes coming at me at a snails pace. Eventually I noticed it to be a car, which had dared Mother Na- ture’s icy slick roads. I got home and noticed the fireplace burning a big bright red-orange fire with bits of blue scattered through it. I turned the news on and the mainpoint of it seemed to be Mo- ther Nature’s bone chilling death toll which had just reached twen- ty seven. Twenty seven people frozen to the bone, the blood as cold as ice. Yet the storm was still young but the snow was al- ready piled up ten to twelve in- ches high. Yes, Mother Nature was taking her toll on society. Kirk Aske Vorpal vor-pal—Vorpal is a beautiful planet in the sixth galaxy. The planet of Vorpal is a place of beauty and danger. Prehistoric creatures roam the dark side of the planet. In the deep cavern lives a siren Luchina. She has very awesome looking eyes like deep whirlpools, waiting to hyp- notize any who look into them. In contrast to the dark side, the light side is a land of happiness and love. Beautiful white sandy beaches with deep blue waters churning up into snowy white caps. The people of Vorpal are wonderful. Their deep blue spark- ling eyes say, hello by themselves their skin is deep brown from the sun. Vorpal itself is mostly beaches. It has two moons and a comet rotating around it con- stantly. Vorpal indeed is a grand place. Cheri Lambird The Sounds of Night I lie in my bed awake listen- ing to the stunning sounds of the night. I hear the whispering of the wind driving sleet against my windows. The whirling rain hit the ground and bounced back as if it were an acrobat on a trampo- line. When I went to my window to watch the storm, I felt a drop of rain hit my sleepy head and roll down my emotionless face like a tear. Very tired, 1 walked back to my bed, lied down, and fell back to sleep while listening to the sounds of a stormy night.
