Valedictorian-Donna Whitely Salutatorian-Steve Smith Class History of 1971 In our Freshman year, 1967-68, we had 36 students. We gained Jessica Sereda at the beginning of school, John Lee in October, and Sam Jackson moved in October. Bob John- son came in January. Our class officers for that year were President-Bill McDaniel, V. President-Tom Marshall, Secretary-Sue Cribbet, Treasurer-Linda Tipsword, and Re- porter-Mike Parsons. Our sponsor was Mr. Guthrie. Our Freshman King and Queen Can- didates were Mike Parsons and Brenda Lesley. Our float theme was “We’ll Needle’em in the End Zone,” and our window was “A Cool Pair.”They both received a third place rating. Our Student Council representatives for the year were Linda Snyder, Monte Mathias, Steve Smith, and Tom Marshall. Our activities for the year were a fish fry and a car wash. In our Sophomore year, 1968-69, we started the year with 35 students. In February we gained David Hill. We lost Debbie Aschermann, who moved to Shelbyville, and Tony Blackford who moved to Dalton City. During the year, Bob Johnson dropped from school. Our class officers were President—Bill Mcllwain, V. President—Tom Marshall, Sec- retary-Becky Sapp, Treasurer-Karen Phillippo, Reporter-John McCain, and Sergeant at Arms-Hans Fox. Our Sophomore sponsor was Mrs. Jones. Tom Marshall and Linda Sny- der were voted on as Sophomore King and Queen candidates. Our float theme was “They’ll Never Ketchup,” and our window was “A Classy Pair.” Both received a fourth place rating. Our Student Council representatives were: Linda Snyder, Monte Mathias, Steve Smith, and Bill Mcllwain. Our activities for the year were a fish fry, a rummage sale, and a car wash. We started our Junior year with 38 students. We gained Vicki and Roger Kilzer right after school started. Tony Blackford came back from Dalton City in December, and Bruce Patient also enrolled. Roger Kilzer dropped school in January, and, in March, Mary Thompson, who got married. Our Class officers were, President-Bill Smith, V. President -Karen Phillippo, Secretary—Cheryl Farris, Treasurer-Linda Tipsword, Reporter Donna Whitely, Sergeant at Artns-Dennis Pyles. Our Junior sponsors were Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Ozee, and Mr. Jarand. Our Homecoming Queen attendant was Karen Phillippo. Our float theme for the year was “An Eye for a Victory” which received a first place rating. The Juniors sponsored the Alumni Banquet for Homecoming. Our main activity for the year was our magazine sales. We topped our quota, and our high salesmen were: Becky Sapp, Cheryl Farris, Monte Mathias, and Karen Phillippo. Our candidates for the FHA Sadie Hawkins dance were Bill Smith and Vicki Kilzer. We had several activities during the year: a fish fry, a pizza party, an ice cream social, and we managed the concessions for the basketball games. The Junior class also sponsored a prom for the 1970 graduating class. The theme of the Prom was “Candyland.” The Prom was very well attended and highly praised. As Seniors we started the year with 35 students. We lost Vicki Kilzer, who moved to Shelbyville. We gained Jerry Wicker and lost him in September. We also gained Vicki Butt Creek. We lost Harry Book in October when he moved to Missouri, and then he came back in December. Our class Officers were, President-Bill Mcllwain, V. President-Tom Marshall, Secretary-Linda Snyder, Treasurer-Becky Sapp, Reporter—Donna Whitely, and Sergeant at Arms-Marcheta Carder. Our sponsors are Mr. Overlot and Mrs. Shimp. Our Homecoming Queen Candidates were Linda Snyder, Becky Sapp, Linda Tipsword, and Sue Cribbet. Our 1970 Homecoming Queen was Linda Snyder. The theme for our float was, “We’ll Press’em,” which received a second place rating. Our Student Council rep- resentatives for the year were Linda Snyder, Donna Whitely, Tom Fitzgerald, Tom Mar- shall, and Bill Mcllwain. The 1971 class motto is “Knowledge is the Key to Peace; Peace is the Key to Life.” The class flower is a Forget-me-not. Our colors are red, white, and blue. Our activities throughout the year were: a chili supper, a chicken fry, a boomerang sale, a rummage sale, and a class film. The Seniors sponsored a Post Prom party in the YWCA in Decatur. Our Baccalaureate services will be held May 30 and Commencement on June 1. Sixteen students have gone all 12 years in the Bethany schools. 13 Senior Class Will of 1971 We the following members of the class of “71 ” being of sound mind and body do here- by leave Bethany High School-willing away the following possessions .. . Tony Blackford leaves his parking place in front of Kathy’s house to Shawna and Bill. Harry Book leaves his love triangles to Cindy Hooper, the girl of many rings. Marcheta Carder leaves her literary talents to Dale Embry, who has developed a style of his own. Kent Clark leaves his superman qualities to Brett Marshall, who is small but mighty. Sue Cribbet leaves her physique and posture to Mindy Johnson, who needs all the help she can get. Deon Cruit leaves his trombone and talent for playing it to Randy Florey, who already is good at blowing his own horn. Debbie Davis leaves her weak stomach to Mary Risley so she can have a legitimate ex- cuse to miss P.E. Cheryl Farris Martin leaves her persuasive manner to Susan Hickenbottom, who is con- stantly trying to get hers. Janet Ferguson leaves her horse back riding equipment and accessories to Bob Bruce, who is always in the saddle. Tom Fitzgerald leaves his new car to Gary Marshall in hopes he’ll be more careful. Paul Fleshner leaves his witty responsonses to teachers to Mary Bryant, who never says a word. Hans Fox leaves the standard to Phil Bryant for his Friday night get togethers with the gang. Dave Hill leaves his sex appeal to Charles Gautier who seems to be lacking something. Hazel LaCost leaves her quiet manner and polite ways to Glenda Robbins, BHS’s inter- com system. John Lee leaves his writing of love letters to Nancy Thompson, who always has enjoyed reading them. Brenda Lesley leaves her quiet ways to Davena Gist, who doesn’t know when to quit. John McCain leaves his perfect attendance record during the Senior year to Jeff Bailey and Steve Evans. Bill Mcllwain sadly leaves Phil and Randy to anyone capable of getting along with them as well as he did. Tom Marshall leaves his morning rides in the country to Charlie Brewer, who seems to have a path of his own. Monte Mathias leaves her singing ability to Sue Johnson in hopes that Sue will improve. Mike Parsons leaves his jumping ability to Dale Embry, who is flying high most of the time anyway. Karen Phillippo Miller leaves her cheerleading talent to Sue Hickenbottom. Dennis Pyles leaves his ability to laugh to Allen Webner in hopes that Allen will im- prove his. Becky Sapp leaves her many talents to the freshmen girls so that they may use them in future years. Nelda Mathias Plotner leaves her ways of finding out things to the CIA. Joey Schwartz leaves his bike to anyone who won’t get tired riding it all the time. Jessica Sereda leaves her measles to anyone who needs a day out of school to go play tennis. M Bill Smith leaves his athletic ability to Randy Florey, who thinks he’s already got it made. Steve Smith leaves his studious habits and quiet nature to Steve Evans and Jeff Bailey hoping that some day they will reform. Linda Snyder leaves her pronunciation of S’s and consonants to the Bethany chorus in hopes they can pronounce their words. Linda Tipsword leaves her long straight hair to Nancy Sharp, who can save it for a rainy day. Rick White leaves his driving ability to Jerry “Knows” Muzzy and Gary Marshall, who are making a gallant attempt to take over the Bethany speed and wreck record. Donna Whitely leaves her baton twirling talents to Pam Vanatta, who keeps tripping over her own shoe laces. Vicki Creek leaves her good grades in Family Living to anyone capable of earning them.
