History SENIOR HISTORY The class of 1970 began their Freshman year with 42 scared and worried students. Pant Davis came to Bethany for a short time but soon departed. The class officers were: Presi- dent Marie Hoskins, Vice-President Renee Freeland, Secretary Dorothy Kirkwood, Trea- surer Sharon Mitchell, Reporter Steve Dukeman. Student Council members Dan Flannell. John Weakly, Marie Hoskins, Peggy Schwartz. Class Sponsor was Mr. Guthrie. There were many activities of which the Freshman class took part in. Our Homecoming Queen and King candidates were Renee Freeland and John Weakly. We received third place on our float “Let’s Ring Out a Victory,” and our window, “Our Heart’s Desire” received second place. We began our sophomore year with 37 students. During the summer, Kathy Book, Jane Funk, and Susan Noblitt moved to Bethany. Over the summer we lost Sharon Florey, Debra Jennings. Kathy Landgrebe. Michael Moore, Ruth Ann Spear, Nancy Welch, and Linda Wentworth. Alton Kelly transferred to another school in January. Sophomore officers were: President Vickie Davis; Vice-President Dan Flannell; Secretary Peggy Bland; Treasurer Marie Hoskins; Reporter Melody Hamilton. Student Council members were: Peggy Schwartz, John Weakly. Dan Flannell, and Marie Hoskins. Our class sponsor was Mr. Phillip Stutesman. Our King and Queen candidates were Steve Dukeman and Jane Funk. Our float, “Time for a Victory” received second place, and our window “An Un- beatable Combination” received third place. At the beginning of our Junior year we had 35 members with the addition of Sharon Florey over the summer. During the summer we lost Sharon Mitchell, who moved to Mis- souri and Kathy Book who also moved. Toby Scribner dropped out in January. Our class officers elected were: President Dan Flannell; Vice-President Dorothy Kirkwood; Secre- tary Joann Osman, Treasurer Lois Seelow; and Reporter Anne Russell. Our class sponsors were Miss Elma Taylor and Mr. Glenn Braden. Our student Council members were Dan Flannell, John Weakly, Renee Freeland, and Cindy Brown. King and Queen candidates were Peggy Schwartz and Jerry Utsler. Our window received second with the theme “Un- decided?? Vote Juniors” and our float received second with the theme “Rootin for a Victory”. On May 17 we honored the seniors with a banquet and prom of the theme “Daisy Daze”. The Senior year started with 33 students. Rachel Nancy moved to Humbolt over the summer and Alton Kelly moved back to Bethany. Barb Stickles was married in June but returned to school in October. Eloise Doyle joined our class in December. Our class of- ficers were: President John Moorn; Vice-President Joann Osman: Secretary Peg Snyder; Treasurer Lois Seelow and Reporter Peg Schwartz. Student Council members are John Weakly, Dan Flannell. Marie Hoskins, Lois Seelow, and Peg Schwartz. Renee Freeland was crowned Homecoming Queen with Corrine Clark, Vickie Davis, and Peg Schwartz serving as attendants. Our float placed second. The Juniors honored us with a banquet and prom on May 9, the theme being “Candyland”. Baccalaureate services will be held on May 31 ,at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Graduation will be on Monday, June 1 at 8:00 p.m. the speaker being L. Goebel Patton, Information Service Department Director of the Illinois Education Association. The Senior trip to Chicago will be June 3 through June 6. Of the 35 seniors, 22 have gone all 12 years together.
