The student elected council, governed by its own constitution, develops rules for the regulation of school activities, ap- proves events to be placed on the school calendar, and keeps an accumulative record of extracurricular activities throughout the year. The Council at all times works with the Board of Education, the school administrators, and its advisor. By August, 1965, this num- ber had dwindled to 37 green and scared Freshmen who walked through the doors of Bethany High School. As freshmen we participated in many activities. Our Homecoming Queen and King candidates were Norma Sizemore and Dave Snyder. As Juniors we began the year with 35 members. Officers were: Pres.-Gene Brewer; V.-Pres. Patti Lesley; Sec. Sheila Mathias; Treas.—Teresa Thompson: Reporter—Dee Wilson; S. Council Gene Brewer, Roger Crowder, Sheila Mathias, and Margaret Mcll- wain: Sponsors: Miss Taylor and Mr. Braden. Our King and Queen candidates were Stan Tipsword and Patti Lesley. Our window “HAPPINESS IS-STAN AND PATTI” WELL 60 received third place. On May 11, 1968. we gave a banquet and prom theme “Roman Holiday” for the graduating Seniors of 1968. We began our Senior year with 35 members. During the year Ron White withdrew, was married, and joined the Navy. Later we lost Betty Cochran who also withdrew and got married. Officers elected were: Pres. John Wise; V.-Pres. Roger Crowder; Sec.— Sheila Mathias; Treas. Patti Lesley; Reporter-Paula Cole; S. Council-Gene Brewer, Pres., of S. Council; Roger Crowder. Sheila Mathias, Margaret Mcllwain; Sponsors Mr. Overlot and Mr. Spence. Our King and Queen candidates were John Wise and Margaret Mcllwain. Our float “SPOUT TIME FOR VICTORY” received first place. Our win- dow A WISE OWL VOTES MARG AND JOHN” received third place. “Beauty and the Beef’, our Senior play was presented in November 1968. The Juniors were our hosts on May 17 to a banquet and prom theme: “Daizy Daze”. Baccalaureate was held on Sunday night May 26,1969. followed by Commencement on Thursday. May 29. The Seniors enjoyed a five day trip after Commencement to New York City. It’s the bottom of the ninth, the score is tied 0-0 and the world famous pitcher Fire- ball Tipsword steps on the mount. The crowd roars and in the background one voice is heard above the others. It is Teresa Thompson with her brood yelling, “Shut up. you kiddies’ ”, As we look over the crowd trying to pick out familiar faces, we see Mar- garet Mcllwain selling concessions. “Peanuts. P-nuts”, she yells. This brings back old memories; she always was kind of squirrelly back in ole BHS. Now, the pitcher is winding up -wait a minute-someone is falling out of the stands. Could it be?—Is it?— Yes it’s Steve Gist. Nurses Patti Lesley and Rayne Holthaus are on the spot immedi- ately. They’re always on hand at ball games ever since they were caught smoking in the operating room. The pitch is delivered. Strike” yells the umpire, Lincoln Noblitt. The batter, Mike Smith, whirls around and shouts “Noblitt, you’re blind”. At this the manager Mike Sally” Collins comes walking slowly from the dug-out. As this minor detail is being worked out, we scan the crowd again. Why. there's Ellen Fitzgerald, and chained to her ever faithful companion, “Foot” King. Across the aisle is Dave Sny- der. 1 hear lie’s a famous actor now. Guess he got the inspiration after being rejected in the class play. Meanwhile, back at the game, a policeman retrieves a foul ball. It's George Fleshner up to his old man’s tracks. Up in the broadcaster's booth is that fa- mous team. Schwartz and Wilson. They got their start by blowing up balloons and sucking all the hot air out again. Back at the ball game. Lightning Fast Roger Crowder is on first base. Why it looks like he’s getting ready to steal and next to him is Sheila Mathias telling him not to. Playing in the outfield is Tom Russell, Alan Loy, Don Gib- bons and Jim Thomas. As usual they are lying down on the job. Oh! Wait a minute; there’s a timeout on the field. Someone needs a drink. There goes water-girl Sharon Muzzy to give one to Bob Florey. Guess he never has gotten enough. Up to bat now is Gene Brewer. He swings and the ball goes sizzling in the stands directly behind him. His intentions were good, but as usual, they didn’t come out right. Catching the foul tip was Linda Payne. For once, she was in the right place at the right time. Fireball is winding up for another tremendous pitch when singing is heard from the dugout. The pinch hitter,Myla Hooper, yells Wise, shut up. Your bull is tone deaf’. Cheerleaders Candy Monroe and Becky Farris start up one of their famous cheers“99 fouls and you’re out”, but are soon hushed by third base coach, Janice Thompson. It wasn’t bothering batter Paula Spence, but it was disturbing bat girl Paula Cole’s slumbers. Last night must have been a doozy! Now there’s a slight pause in the game as they wait for the next batter, Nancy Martin, to step up. She never was on time. A high pop- up makes it almost impossible for the man on third, Dan Miller, to make it home for the decisive run, but he tries it anyway. A quick sprint and a long slide and a cloud of dust. As it clears, the umpire makes his call. He’d out! The game is lost. What a game! What a game!
