DEDICATION We, the Annual Staff of 1959-1960, with deep gratitude and appreciation for his untiring efforts in behalf of our education, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Earnest Martin. For 25 years, Mr. Martin, has given his best to the Bethany School System as principal of the Bethany Grade School and as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. To us he has been more than a Principal. He has been the silent voice behind the efforts, class work, activities, and graduation of the students of the Bethany Grade School. For this we offer a humble Thank-You.” BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED: Ralph Sharp, President; Errol Reeter, Secretary; Carl Shelton. STANDING: Frank Roby, Junior; C. L. Bland. On May 26, 1960 we had our commencement exercises in the High School Gym. Twenty-four of us received our diplomas. The speaker for the evening was Dr. Ira Langston, President of Eureka College. We took our Senior trip to Washington, D. C. and New York City, June 6-14, 1960. The following people have been with the class of “60” for four years: Lyndal Bosomworth; Nancy Davis, Jim Dukeman, Pat Gregory, Phillip Johnson, Joe Marshall, John Moody, Sue Poole, Ron Pritts, Judy Rowe, Richard Rutherford, Mary Schwartz, Bill Settle, Richard Sharp, Tom Stocks, Dean Sutton, Dean Utsler, Barbara Wheeler, Roger Yarnell, Gale Ziems. We, the Class of 1960, have accomplished what we planned when we entered High school in 1956-- “Graduation.” SENIOR PROPHECY Time: 1970 Setting: Resort Area in Bethany Here it is 1970, and I still hold the position of bell boy for the world famous “Water Over the Dam” Lodge, located south of the large industrious area of Bethany. My employers are the multibillionaires ROGER YARNELL and GALE ZIEMS. Their back yards were flooded one night, and it turned into a gold mine for them. It seems as though 1 11 never get my work done with all these tourists coming here for their vacation. Boy! That last trip upstairs carrying all those suitcases and stuffed animals of that famous opera singer and socialite JUDY ROWE has completely exhausted me. Look! up in the sky, it’s a bird! it's a plane! no, it's JIM DUKEMAN flying the latest U. S. Air Force jet. Look out! he missed the runway and is landing in the parking lot and guess whose car is in the way? You guessed it--Charlie Roney’s. Here comes Bill Settle , who is the chauffeur of BARBARA WHEELER, the secretary to the President. BILL SETTLE has had chauffeuring days from way back, and Barbara has stuck to her high school ambition of being a secretary. Whom have I seen “scouring” around the premises? No one but the famous social director of the “Water Over the Dam Lodge, DAVE WATKINS. His great athletic ability in High School qualified him for this position. I saw a beautiful blue 1955 Ford convertible sitting in the parking lot. I thought it looked familiar. and then I saw Mr. and Mrs. DEAN UTSLER, I guess he was so attached to that car that he just couldn’t get rid of it even though he is a rich wheat farmer of Kansas. I think I’ll take a walk out on the patio by the pool; speaking of patio-there stands PATSY GREGORY who is practicing to swim the English Channel--under water. She always did exaggerate. Walking a little farther, I see Professor PHILLIP JOHNSON, lying in a lawn chair, studying heavenly bodies, and preparing material for his next book. “Hello, General THOMAS STOCKS, I understand that you have been promoted to Four Star General.” Walking towards me, I see the former SUE POOLE, who has assumed the duty of homemaker. There seems to be a commotion at the pool. As I walk over, I notice that the humidity is getting quite heavy, and as the humidity lowers, I see the Olympic diving Champion, DICK SADDORIS, grinning from ear to ear, emerging from the pool. Was that a jack-knife he was attempting to do? What was that flash and roar that just went by? Oh, it was RONNIE PRITTS making the initial run on the new freeway he just finished building from Bethany to Chicago. He made several trips to Chicago when he was younger and didn’t like the roads, so he became an engineer and constructed his own freeway. I can hear some girls screaming in the distance. They must be screaming over the new recording star—RICHARD LA VERNE SHARP. His latest record is called “Eloctrocution,” and the girls get quite a charge out of it. Now that he is rich and famous, he doesn’t have to get up at 4:00 and shuck corn. Over the P. A. system comes the announcement of the presence of Evangelist LYNDAL BOSOM- WORTH, better known to the religious world as Rev. Buzz. I hear that Roger and Gale are trying to save money again this year. They have employed the famous bookkeeper LINDA STINSON, who is an expert bookkeeper. I see Dean Sutton resting on the beach after writing three chapters of his new book last night “How To Date on the Sly. He is a very qualified writer on such subjects. Who’s this guy with the six-shooter hanging from his hip, ten gallon hat, and cowboy boots with chrome plated heels? Why, it’s RICHARD “TEX RUTHERFORD, die new Star of Powder Burns. He portrays a cow- boy with a handicap worse than Chester’s--saddle sores. I just heard NANCY DAVIS was temporarily laid off her job as lodge telephone operator and editor of the “Lodge Grapevine” due to a cold that settled in her ear. Beep, beep, town and country horn? Well, if it isn’t the sole owner and driver of the town’s flourishing taxicab service, JEFFREY BREITMAN. Today Is his 12th anniversary of taxiing, a career which started in high school. There is a big crowd in the lounge watching television. I wonder what’s on. Oh, that person looks familiar; why, yes, it’s Joe Marshall, leader of the debating team, but wait a minute--what are they doing to him? They’re dragging him out, and I can hear him screaming, “I’m right, I know I’m right. It seems he missed the $100,000 question on the history quiz show. For no more chance that MARY SCHWARTZ had in high school, it's remarkable the success she has made as a world famous play director on Broadway. I hear her career was almost discouraged due to a certain green group. Last, but not least, we come to JOHN MOODY, who is working with me as a bell boy. You know, of course, that he’s still trying to get through the first year of pre-med. That boy sure has determination. SENIOR WILL We, the Senior Class of 1960, of Bethany High School of the county of Moultrie, in the state of Illinois, being of crammed mind and tired body, after serving four years of brain-breaking labor, hereby make, publish, and declare this as our lastwilland testament, and, accordingly, revoke all former wills, bequeaths, and devices of whatever nature or form made by us. Lyndal Bosomworth leaves nothing to nobody because he’s going to need everything. Jeff Breitman leaves Phil Johnson’s history and physics notebooks to Jon Robert Whitrock. Nancy Davis leaves her “number pleasezze” to Linda Thomas with the reminder that operators aren’t to eavesdrop! Jim Dukeman leaves his ability to keep the English class in stitches to Pauline Ward. Keep ’em laughing, Pauline. Patsy Gregory leaves her many colored angora yarns to Linda Robinson, Pat Emerick, Jeanne Wheeler, and any other girl who might need them. Phillip Johnson leaves his studious ways and midnight oil to Steve Crane. Don’t over do it though, Steve! Joe Marshall leaves happily! ! ! Sue Poole leaves her diamond ring and rice to anyone that wants them. Ronnie Pritts leaves his school skipping techniques to John McLaughlin, who t'eally doesn’t need them. Judy Rowe leaves her golden voice to Dean McReynolds, who will probably use It to call the hogs. John Moody leaves his ability to touch the basketball rim to Randy Springer, who already has a small start. Richard Rutherford leaves his quiet ways to Holly Wood, who might be able to find use for them. Dick Saddoris leaves his big soft shoulders to Sharon Pasley, who uses them anyway. Mary Schwartz leaves her ability to soft soap the teachers to Ron Emel. Bill Settle leaves his flaming red hair and freckles to Larry Bennett, who really doesn’t need them. Richard Sharp leaves his running ability to Bill Sims. Tom Stocks leaves his “Who’s”, “What’s , “Why’s”, and “Please move over, I can’t see the board”, to anyone who has a roving mind. Dean Sutton leaves his ability to get caught sleeping in English Class to anyone who could use the sleep. Dean Utsler leaves his class ring to Pat Emerick but will keep a close watch on it. Barbara Wheeler leaves her girlish blush to Sue Patrick, who doesn’t know what the word means. Roger Yarnell leaves his ability to finally catch the girl he wants, to anyone who’s been trying for 12 years. Gale Ziems leaves her pep, vim, and vigor to Stew Mochel--who needs pepping up. Linda Stinson leaves Mrs. Hixson to grade all those bookkeeping papers alone. Dave Watkins leaves his nightly trips to Sullivan to Linda Carroll, who is seen in Sullivan quite often. In witness of all the persons present, we proclaim this the last will and testament of the class of 60. THE SENIORS MOST STUDIOUS Barb and Phillip from personality poll COME INI DINE A MITE CAFE D.
