JON WALEN Band 1,2,3,4; Rifle Club 3; Senior Play. to the graduating class (.r' ' ) 1 CLASS It all happened one day when Carolyn came to visit me. We were sitting on the floor of my cave chewing the bone when it all came back. Slowly, mistily, but surely it all was there. It was on the day when Jeanne Elder and Eddie Tucker, two great scientists, were distracted and let their bubbling experiment boil. Therewas a violent explosioni The earth shook, buildings crumpled beneath the impact, people fled in stark terror, but there was no safety. And now this! This desolationi This nothing I To clear our senses we decided to take a walk. We were surprised and happy to meet an old classmate Jon Walen. He is the heart-throb of the teen-agers, an ancient Elvis Presley. He is married to another chum of ours Violet Miller, but alas all does not go well, for Jon is madly in love with his co-star in The Life and Loves of Marjorie Main,” Janet Taylor. It is the ever eternal triangle, but this triangle has an extra corner. Butch Bennett, the notorious creator of a club that is guaranteed to make a hit every time, has his eye on Janet and he has her under constant surveilance by his henchman, Roy Book. Things may not go on like this much longer for the chief of the tribe, Ron Garrett, and his Public Prosecutor, Wayne Ward, are hot on the trail of the gangsters. We hope Jon realizes what a treasure Violet is before it is too late. We next passed a new duplex cave that was recently sold to Sarah Kirkwood and her husband. Dale. Sarah surprised Dale with a new curved stick with which to work the soil. They are going to share the cave with Anita Wiley and her husband, Bill, who is going into farming with Dale. Well, she’s at it again! We used to wonder at Mary Kay’s early bids to the Sweetheart Dance, but this beats all She has asked Dean Puyear nine months before time to the Sour Liver Hop at Cave 15. Hope you have fun, Kay I Oh, Girls,” thrilled the ex-editor of the Broadcaster, Wait for me. Patiently we waited until Judy Lumsden had reached us. “Ihave the best news,” she said, ‘Tm on my way to decorate Jackie’s cave. I’m going to do a set of pictures showing little David from age three to seven.” We “oh’d” and ah’d” properly and proceeded on our way. Crawling on her knees, pecking at corn, is our close friend, Phylis Barnes. It was pathetic. In high school days she always loved the atmosphere of corn fields and when the blast came it was too much for her. She thinks she is a hen. Suddenly a harsh pounding sound was heard around the comer, and as we went to investigate who did we spy but T. L. Sheehan. He was chiseling his A’ B’ C's out of a huge slab of stone. We found he works for Sandra Barnes, the old bookworm, who now owns a bookstore. She is very poor for two reasons: (1) It takes too long to make a page in a chapter in a book and (2) no one can read. Glancing upward we saw Shirley Heckler with a load of wash and groceries trudging up the steep grade. Upon inquiry we found that she was on her way to clean the house of the tribe’s bachelor, Howard Brown. “How that man does mess things up!’’ she simpered as she waved good bye. The building to come into view next was the repair shop of Ronald Crane’s. He repairs wrecked dinosaurs. His best customer, Bruce Stroyeck, was there getting the blocks lowered and a new set of duals put on his favorite hopped up dinosaur, Farfel. “Don’t! Stop! A-h-h-h-h!’’ These bloodcurling screams split our ears as we rounded a corner to find Faye Prius dragging Skip into her cave by his long beard. Just like old times! As memory returned to us we remembered the last news broadcast we had heard. We had been informed that the waters of the world were slowly advancing and that over a period of about ten years they should cover the earth. When we heard the loud steady roar we both knew it was THE END. GOOD LUCK SENIORS Compliments of POOLE'S DRUG STORE PHIL'S DRIVE INN MART Bethany, Illinois Bethany, Illinois F. H. BLAND AND SON GEORGE GIBBONS, CONTRACTOR Bethany, Illinois Bethany, Illinois CLASS HISTORY Thirty-one of us, green and scared, marched through the stone gate and formed the gang in the fall of 53. Those charged with the organization are; Wayne Ward...............................President Diane Shonk.........................Vice-President Jeanne Elder...................Secretary-Treasurer Mary Kay Twenty...........................Reporter Jackie Sims and Ron Garrett........Student Council Mr. Bosomworth is chosen guardian and Mary Kay Twenty is permitted to serve as majorette this year. The fall of 54 brings 30 real gone squares to Mrs. Campbell’s room. In checking roll we discover, that Lois McGee, Gale Marshall, and Wayne Ward have jumped bond. To account for these three losses we have admitted Sarah Kirkwood, Pat Hill, and Charles Gard. Pat and Charles are with us only a short time though before being transferred. Upon further inspection we dis- cover that Arietta McDaniels has been paroled by marriage. The gang leaders appointed are: Eddie Tucker.............................President Diane Shonk.........................Vice-President Judy Lumsden.............................Secretary Phylis Barnes............................Treasurer Jackie Sims...............................Reporter Faye Pritts and Ron Garrett .... Student Council Guard of the gang this year is Coach Jostes. Jackie Sims is beginning a three year term as cheerleader and Mary Kay Twenty is still serving as majorette. The junior gang called for a meeting to elect new brains of the outfit. Those promoted were: Diane Shonk..............................President Eddie Tucker........................Vice-President Phylis Barnes............................Secretary Violet Miller............................Treasurer Judy Lumsden..............................Reporter Sandra Barnes, Faye Pritts, and Ronnie Garrett. . . Student Council Gang mothers are Miss Brown and Miss Gisinger. During this long and gruelsome term nine of our inmates flew the coup. They were: Ronnie Robbins, Larry Farris, Gene Marshall, Carroll Hall, Bradley Herendeen, Dave Cain, Mary Kay Twenty, Diana Herendeen, and Jeanette Armor. Two of our former pals, Wayne Ward and Mary Kay Twenty, flew back, bringing with them Roy Book and Bruce Stroyeck, who became new mem- bers of the gang. BROTHER GOOSE appeared on the scene December 2, and was a real gone play. For our departing inmates, the seniors, we threw a real keen prom at the Decatur Club on May 12. Twenty-five cool cats started things rolling by proclaiming: Ron Garrett.....................................Top Man Diane Shonk ........................Right-Hand Man Violet Miller.............Time Keeper (Secretary) Jeanne Elder..............Pay-Off Man (Treasurer) Carolyn Pritts.......................Spy (Reporter) Sandra Barnes, Ronnie Garrett, and Wayne Ward. . . Law Men, (Student Council) Miss Brown, Mr. Jarand.......................Guards One of our cats, David Windell, was released on bail and another, Jon Walen, was picked up. During Christmas one real gone kitten, Anita Lillico, jumped parole and was married, however, she came back to finish her term. THE FORM DIVINE, our senior play, was a real smooth job and came off without a hitch on April 5. On May 18 the junior bunch threw a real hep Prom for all us departing cool cats. We really flew the coup when we marched up to the warden to receive our permanent paroles on May 24, 1957. The break was final when we took time off on good behavior to fly to the Ozarks.
